Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch and his longtime manager David W. Williams have started a new label, Xovr Records.
Pronounced “Crossover Records,” the new label announced its first signing, Christian alt-metal vets Spoken, which features Jr Bareis — Welch’s bandmate in the side-project Love and Death.
“It is a complete pleasure to work together with my long time friend and solo manager David Williams to start Xovr,” said Welch of the new label via a press release. “I am equally excited to work on our first release with Spoken, featuring our brother Jr from Love and Death.”
Xovr will drop Spoken’s 10th studio album, Reflection, on March 15th as its inaugural release, and the title track can be streamed now. Nashville rockers Dose of Adolescence were also announced as the second release on the label.

Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer has joined forces with composer/filmmaker Chris Hunt to form a new electronic outfit named Venera. The duo has announced its self-titled debut album, along with releasing the single “Hologram” featuring Rizz from the band Vowws.
Venera’s debut LP will arrive on October 13th via Ipecac Recordings. “Hologram” actually follows lead single “Swarm,” which was quietly and mysteriously released last month.
As for the new tune, Shaffer and Hunt state, “’Hologram’ emerged quickly from our first session together. A nearly unchanging drum machine pattern nested in warbling guitars. We don’t interact much with holograms but they seem to offer an image of an alluring emptiness and light, which resonates well with the universe we are driven to explore.”
In addition to Vowws’ Rizz, the album features guest drumming from Deantoni Parks, and vocal contributions from Alain Johannes and Health’s Jacob Duzsik.

Like many younger fans of the Doors, Leah Moore was intoxicated by their aura, their mystery, when she was a teen. The comics writer recalls being introduced to the band via 1987’s The Lost Boys, particularly the Jim Morrison poster the vampire teens kept in their cave. Then, in 1992, she convinced her physics teachers to take her class to visit Morrison’s grave during a class jaunt to Paris.
“It was pouring with rain, absolutely battering it down, and there was us, a really unpromising gang of nerdy 13- or 14-year-old kids in raincoats,...

Z2 Comics partnered up with rock band Skillet to release a graphic novel titled “Eden: A Skillet Graphic Novel” and we have to say that it is an absolute must-read for both comic and music fans alike. The story surrounded the main characters John and Korey along with the help from ex-soldier Seth and cyborg Jen on their quest to protect their loved ones from a group of zealots that steal a machine that served as a protection device and eventually lead them all into redemption. The story sucked us in from beginning to end with its amazingly vivid imagery and immersive storyline. While many of us are most familiar with Skillet’s musical works, it is fascinating to see what they were able to bring to the table when working in another creative medium. “Eden: A Skillet Graphic Novel” was co-written by John Cooper of Skillet along with Random...

Humphrey Bogart movies: ‘The Maltese Falcon,’ ‘High Sierra’ (Image: Most famous Humphrey Bogart quote: ‘The stuff that dreams are made of’ from ‘The Maltese Falcon’) (See previous post: “Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall Movies.”) Besides 1948, 1941 was another great year for Humphrey Bogart — one also featuring a movie with the word “Sierra” in the title. Indeed, that was when Bogart became a major star thanks to Raoul Walsh’s High Sierra and John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon. In the former, Bogart plays an ex-con who falls in love with top-billed Ida Lupino — though both are outacted by ingénue-with-a-heart-of-tin Joan Leslie. In the latter, Bogart plays Dashiel Hammett’s private detective Sam Spade, trying to discover the fate of the titular object; along the way, he is outacted by just about every other cast member, from Mary Astor’s is-she-for-real dame-in-distress to Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nominee Sydney Greenstreet. John Huston...

London -- U.K. indie Metrodome Distribution is brushing up on its Shakespeare, taking U.K., Irish, Australian and New Zealand ancillary rights to Trevor Nunn's stage-to-screen adaptation of "King Lear," starring Ian McKellen.
The deal was hammered out among Metrodome's Peter Urie, Sara Frain and Kate Edwards and Richard Price and Nigel Whitehouse for Rpta Ltd.
Metrodome negotiated the multiterritory deal in order to work closely with Rialto Distribution, who will be releasing the film in Australia and New Zealand.
Recorded in high-definition at Pinewood Studios after a sellout West End run at the New London Theatre, "Lear" is directed by Nunn and Chris Hunt.
King Lear will be released on DVD by Metrodome in the U.K. in October, then on Blu-ray in December. Channel 4 is planning to air the production on Christmas Day here. It will be released in Australia and New Zealand in early 2009.
