PBS’s Paula Kerger Celebrates Fred Rogers, Explains Perry Simon Pick As Next Programming Chief – TCA
PBS chief Paula Kerger devoted much of her 25th consecutive TCA at-bat celebrating the renaissance of Fred Rogers calling him a “singular individual” whose “civility and graciousness” which she said “are especially resonant today” without elaborating, because it was not necessary.

Valar morghulis. All men must die. Might as well read some excellent books before then.
This summer, George R.R. Martin and a slew of other authors and celebrities will lend their voices and passion to “The Great American Read,” an eight-part PBS television competition that celebrates books. PBS made the announcement at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday.
Much like Martin’s “Game of Thrones” series, ultimately there can only be one victor, and the series will conclude when the public selects “America’s Best-Loved Book” based on votes.

The #MeToo movement shows no sign of slowing down. Like the women who started the Time’s Up movement, public broadcaster PBS intends to make sure that all the progress made in shining a light on sexual harassment isn’t lost and is able to continue.
At the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday, PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger announced the five-part, half-hour series titled, “#MeToo, Now What?” (a working title). Hosted by Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International, the discussion series will premiere in February.
The conversation will engage both men and women from all ages and walks of life about sexual harassment and how to create positive and lasting change. Each episode will focus on one aspect of sexual harassment: the impact of popular culture on women in the workplace, how race and class factor into the discussion, the social costs of pay inequity and gender discrimination,...

Lessons have been learned at PBS from the ratings successes of “Downton Abbey” and Ken Burns’ “The Roosevelts,” which have both broken network ratings records. As a result, PBS is pushing harder into original series production. In addition to a co-production deal with BBC, in which the media organizations are planning up to 10 new specials together, PBS has also greenlit its own original Civil War-era drama from Scott Ridley and is moving forward on original digital series. At the same time, PBS’s chief programming executive and general manager of General Audience Programming, Beth Hoppe, said there are television genres she’s.

Downton Abbey returned a massive audience and came thisclose to setting a new ratings record. The fifth season premiere had 10.1 million viewers Sunday night, which is huge for a PBS drama. The number is just shy of the show's all-time peak U.S. viewership of 10.2 million viewers for its fourth season premiere. "We’re incredibly excited that Downton Abbey’s fans came out in force for the premiere of what has become a cultural phenomenon," said PBS chief programmer Beth Hoppe. "We’ll also be looking at time-shifted and online viewing over the next few weeks as the season progresses.

Diane Haithman contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. Reality Check is a Deadline feature series covering the players, programs and trends in reality television. Instead of Emmy love, PBS stalwart Antiques Roadshow has met with 11 long years of Emmy “like”. During the last 12 of its 18 years on the air, Antiques Roadshow has been nominated 11 times in the Outstanding Reality Program Category (including “reality” TV’s former Emmy categories, Non-Fiction Program/Series). The exception was 2004: the year the Outstanding Reality Program category was introduced, Roadshow was a no-show on the nominees list. (Another sedate PBS series, Colonial House, made the list then, and the win went to Queer Eye). In 2014, could Roadshow finally find an Emmy in its attic? Marsha Bemko, series executive producer since 1999, hopes so. “We’re the granddaddy of a genre,” she tells Deadline. “I sort of feel like Cinderella”. But Bemko adds it’s better to...

The final ratings are in for the most recent seasons of U.K. imports "Downton Abbey" and "Sherlock" and they are once again big for PBS.
"Downton's" fourth season saw an average audience of 13.2 million viewers when the final numbers were calculated, which is up nearly 2 million from its Season 3 numbers. This firmly cements the Crawley family period piece as the highest-rated drama in PBS history. Likewise, "Sherlock" saw a gain of 2.2 million year-over-year, going from an average of 4.4 million in Season 2 to an average of 6.6 million in Season 3.
Beth Hoppe, chief programming executive for PBS, says, "The pairing of 'Downton Abbey' and 'Sherlock' was a winning blueprint this year, helping both series reach record audiences on PBS member stations. PBS is doubling down on British drama, scheduling new seasons of its buzziest shows -- Downton Abbey and Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Sunday nights beginning in January. It wasn’t easy for Downton Abbey addicts to avoid spoilers this season (and for addicts tardy to Sunday’s season finale, there are spoilers in this post). As the costume drama’s popularity exploded, PBS’s delayed U.S. broadcast of the show — airing it four months after it first aired in the U.K — made it difficult to dodge key plot points in advance, whether fans couldn’t resist prowling British recaps or their Google alerts accidentally revealed that Dan Stevens was leaving the show, which made it pretty obvious that Matthew would die. But this would be so easy to fix! clamor fans. Just air the show in the U.S. at the same time it airs in the U.K., and then we can all be shocked together when Edith gets married for real next time.
