"Either we're sliding between parallel realities... or it's a simulation, and it's glitching out." Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for a trippy, indie sci-fi thriller titled The Mandela Effect, the latest made by filmmaker David Guy Levy. For those unfamiliar, the "Mandela Effect" is the theory that people collectively misremember something (the best example being: The Berenstain Bears). The odd feeling of being wrong makes some start to question reality or believe in alternate timelines. This plays with that concept and takes it even further, throwing in some The Matrix and Source Code vibes. The film follows a man who becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something much larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself. The film stars Charlie Hofheimer, Aleksa Palladino, Robin Lord Taylor, Madeleine McGraw, and Clarke Peters.

It’s been widely reported Ben Stiller wouldn’t sign on to direct “Escape at Dannemora” until the script was grounded in facts, but his responsibility to the story didn’t end there. Stiller has shown the seven-part Showtime limited series — recounting Richard Matt and David Sweat’s elaborate 2015 prison breakout — to a slew of the real people involved in the escape, including Matt’s daughter, the victims’ families, and New York state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott.
“One of the first things [the Inspector General] said to us when they saw it was they were really glad that Episode 6 was there,” Stiller said in an interview with IndieWire. “They felt it really made it clear that these two criminals were in prison for a reason; that these were not victimless crimes — these guys were murderers — and they felt it was responsible [to show that].”
Up until the penultimate episode, each entry of “Escape at Dannemora” proceeded in sequence,...

You ever have a moment where you thought you knew something, only for it to turn out to be wrong. But you remember it being true. That's the Mandela Effect. Named after Nelson Mandela, when people remember him dying in the 80's in prison, but in reality, he died just recently in 2013. Other cases include titles of food brands or famous movie quotes. Most recently a lot of people believed there was the 1990 film with Sinbad called Shazaam but it doesn't really exist. It's so popular that people believe there is something deeper, which is why there will be a film coming out soon about just that.
The film aptly called The Mandela Effect will star Robin Lord Taylor, Charlie Hofheimer, Aleksa Palladino, and Clark Peters. It is to be directed by David Guy Levy and who will also c-write the script with Steffan Schlachtenhaufen.

Full Disclosure: I never watched the original 24. Not because I wasn't interested, or because I was turned off by what little I did see. It just happened to premiere during a period of time in the 00s when I really wasn't much of a TV watcher. That said, I'm familiar with the show's conventions, and I did end up becoming a fan of the show's cousin, Homeland, on Showtime. So I walked into this Pilot episode for 24: Legacy with no real expectations or baggage from the Kiefer Sutherland iteration of the series.
It was pretty great.
The episode doesn't waste any time setting things up, but rather it starts things off at a full sprint. Within about 90 seconds we see a home being raided, a man being interrogated- and executed- by mysterious baddies, and our first glimpse of the show's protagonist. The machinations of the show's plot become clear right away,...

'Music of the Heart': Unusually bloodless Wes Craven movie works as Meryl Streep showcase Wes Craven, the director of the Scream franchise and of the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, is hardly the kind of filmmaker from whom one would expect a syrupy motion picture about a determined violin teacher who wins the hearts and minds of her inner-city school students. Yet Craven is the man responsible for Music of the Heart, a film utterly devoid of slashed faces, lethal stabbings, and deadly fingernails. Instead, this distaff version of Mr. Holland's Opus – with touches of To Sir with Love – offers loads of sentiment, some classical music (violinists Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, and Mark O'Connor appear as themselves), plenty of bad pop tunes, and a superb performance by Meryl Streep as a...

“A philanthropic millionaire is just dying to give money to people who really need it – but his chosen recipients may just wind up dying in their pursuit of the prize. That’s the chilling setup for Would You Rather, a one-of-a-kind thriller that will leave viewers shaken when it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on July 9, 2013, via IFC Midnight and Mpi Media Group, with SRPs, respectively, of $29.98 and $24.98.

Feeling bad for Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) on "Mad Men" this season? You're not alone.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (above), Kevin Rahm, who plays Peggy's boss and forbidden love interest Ted Chaough, opened up about how sorry he feels for her.
"Poor Peggy. I love Elisabeth so much, and I love Peggy," he said, referencing Peggy's messy breakup with Abe (Charlie Hofheimer) after she accidentally stabbed him. "I feel so bad for Peggy. She's had it rough."
This isn't the first time Rahm has gushed about Moss. While on HuffPost Live, the actor hinted that he wouldn't mind seeing Peggy and Ted get together.
"That's such a loaded question," Rahm said when asked if he hopes Ted and Peggy become "Mad Men's" next item. After a long pause, he added, "The more I get to work with Lizzie, the better."

Robert Luketic's thriller opens via Relativity Media on August 16th, 2013 and looks like a solid film overall. The cast of the pic written by Jason Dean Hall and Barry Levy based on the novel by Joseph Finder, also includes Josh Holloway, Embeth Davidz, Richard Dreyfuss, Julian McMahon, Lucas Till, Angela Sarafyan, Christine Marzano, Charlie Hofheimer and William Pertz. It's been a week since we added the first trailer as well. The first trailer is in for the intriguing Paranoia and, much to those looking to drool a little, features a few steamy shots of Liam Hemsworth and Amber Heard together. The Relativity Media release tells of an entry-level employee who has an opportunity to strike it rich and land that slick office working under Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman), but in turn must spy on his boss's old mentor (Harrison Ford) to secure for him a multi-billion dollar advantage. He's reinvented, and blends in, taking home a revolutionary product, but Wyatt isn't letting his mole go free so easily. Josh Holloway stars as part of the FBI's criminal investigation unit. Also in the cast are Embeth Davidz, Richard Dreyfuss, Julian McMahon, Lucas Till, Angela Sarafyan, Christine Marzano, Charlie Hofheimer and William Pertz.

Is Mad Men’s Megan Draper about to be murdered à la Sharon Tate? Internet conspiracy theorists say yes. My take on the rumors and what the show’s costume designer has to say. At The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "Mad Men: The Bizarre Megan Draper as Sharon Tate Conspiracy Theory," in which I examine the current Internet conspiracy theories swirling around Mad Men's Megan Draper and see what the show's costume designer, Janie Bryant, had to say about the star t-shirt and more. On AMC’s Mad Men this season, Megan Draper (Jessica Paré), the actress wife of Jon Hamm’s Don Draper, has had some success in her own career, landing a meaty role on an ongoing daily soap opera where she’s now playing twins Colette and Corinne. In this week’s episode (“The Better Half”), Megan took to the balcony...

The article below contains spoilers for "The Better Half," the May 26th, 2013 episode of "Mad Men." That was one hell of a breakup. "The Better Half" was an episode with all sorts of enjoyably sharp edges to it, one notable for an utterly unexpected dalliance between Don (Jon Hamm) and Betty (January Jones), a venture from Roger (John Slattery) toward his own ex and the woman who bore his child Joan (Christina Hendricks) and a reappearance from Duck Phillips (Mark Moses) in a new gig as a headhunter. But these developments, interesting as they are, pale beside the dramatic end of Abe (Charlie Hofheimer) and Peggy's (Elisabeth Moss) relationship. There's apparently nothing like accidentally stabbing your boyfriend in the gut to get him to tell you what he really thinks, and in an instance of the black humor that "Mad Men" can do very well -- the episode was written...

We can't go so far as to call "The Better Half" an optimistic episode of "Mad Men," but there's an unusual sense of hopefulness to the little breakthroughs (and one big breakup) that occur throughout.
Don, Roger and even Pete have conversations that force them to confront uncomfortable realities about their relationships, while Peggy weathers a more direct hit to her personal life. As the show enters the home stretch -- only four more episodes left this season! -- the question becomes whether or not any of these events can get the characters moving in the right direction to improve their lives.
[Note: In the spirit of showrunner Matthew Weiner declaring that this season is about Dr. Arnold Rosen telling Don, "People will do anything to alleviate their anxiety," we're tracking the happiness of key characters week by week.]
The "Mad Men" happiness index, week eight:
1) Bob Benson (unranked last week): He still seems far too good to be true, but Bob is happily romancing Joan and referring a nurse to help with Pete's mother's dementia, so this background player assumes Roger's usual spot at the top for a week.

We are now up to the year 1968 for the double-episode season 6 opener of Mad Men. This already seems to be the show’s most progressive season so far costume wise. Season 5 certainly took the most significant cultural jump, with Swinging Sixties politics, clothes and interiors looming like a shadow of coolness. In the latter half of season 5, aspiring actress Megan’s (Jessica Paré) capri pants and sweater audition wear, while not exactly beatnik were avant-garde enough to suggest the growing exuberance of her character. The times they are a-changin’.
For season 6, costume designer Janie Bryant looks to be channelling the same ideal as season 1, but whereas season 1 (set in 1960) was a crossover in terms of fashion from the 1950s/60’s, season 6 is transitional from the 1960s/70’s. As we are only in 1968 it could be argued this is a mite early, but cleverly Bryant only hints at the changes to come.

Don't panic, "Mad Men" fans: Elisabeth Moss is very much back in action for Season 6 as secretary-turned-ad agency executive Peggy Olson.
When Peggy decided to quit Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce during Season 5 -- and leave behind her mentor Don Draper (Jon Hamm) -- some viewers worried Moss and her fan favorite character might simply disappear from the show. Although she's not at liberty to say much about the new season, Moss does confirm that she's most definitely a part of it -- and she's been very "pleasantly surprised" with what Peggy has had to do.
But don't expect many details beyond that. "That's my joke," Moss cracked during a roundtable discussion at a recent Los Angeles press day. "I can only say I play Peggy Olson and I work in advertising. I can't even say where I work, or who I'm working with. Super boring."
It's not all boring, however,...

"Mad Men" Season 6 premieres on April 7 at 9 p.m. Et on AMC, and the new year finds Peggy Olsen (Elisabeth Moss) in unfamiliar territory, thanks to her new position as Copy Chief at Cutler Gleason and Chaough -- a rival agency to Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.
Outside the not-so-supportive support system at Sdcp, Peggy has more power, but plenty of uncertainty along with it, and star Elisabeth Moss told The Huffington Post that the season's main theme is "people trying to get away from themselves and having a lot of trouble with that, and being chased by their own shadows." According to Moss, our characters will be faced with the troubling question: "Do people ever really change?"

Director David Guy Levy and Writer Steffen Schlachtenhaufen have recorded an audio commentary to accompany their grisly thriller Would You Rather? The track, which you can download via Soundcloud below, is synced to the film, which stars Brittany Snow and Sasha Grey as two financially desperate women who, along with others in similar situations, are offered a way out of their troubles by a mysterious aristocrat (Re-Animator's Jeffrey Combs), whose “solution” involves the title game, a horrific series of one-ups with grisly consequences. John Heard, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Eddie Steeples and Charlie Hofheimer also star.
Would You Rather? is available now via iTunes, Amazon and other digital vendors, and you can use the widget below to download the commentary to play along with the film (for your second viewing, of course – no doubt there's spoilers galore in there). It is set to start on the first note of music at the beginning of the film.

IFC Films’ Would You Rather is a pretty solid horror movie, with a fun/diverse cast and that Clue meets Saw appeal. If you haven’t watched the film or wanted to see the film again, now’s your chance to watch the film with audio commentary from director David Guy Levy and writer Steffen Schlachtenhaufen. Check out my interview with David Guy Levy, and the review of the film here.

Title: Would You Rather Director: David Guy Levy Starring: Brittany Snow, Sasha Grey, Jeffrey Combs, Jonny Coyne, Eddie Steeples, John Heard, June Squibb, Robin Lord Taylor, Enver Gjokaj, Charlie Hofheimer, Robb Wells A slice of dinner theater torture porn that attempts to mine the inner sadism of regular folks for squirm-inducing entertainment, “Would You Rather” comes across like a combination of “Saw” and 1995′s “The Last Supper,” but without any of the queasy delight that designation might connote. Scripted by Steffen Schlachtenhaufen as a twisted exploration of the titular party game, director David Guy Levy’s movie isn’t wickedly playful enough to qualify as a darkly comedic horror romp, a la the “Final [ Read More ]

It never helps when a half-decent indie horror film is saddled with a title that's confusing, generic, or vague. There is an endless amount of solid (or at least decent) horror indies to be found on Amazon, iTunes, and Netflix -- so one could be forgiven for confusing "Truth or Dare" with "Truth or Die" or for mistaking "Would You Rather" with "Did You Know" or perhaps "Spin the Bottle." (How has there not been a horror film called "Spin the Bottle" yet??) Anyway, all of this is a hopefully amusing way to open a review with the opinion that, yes, the strange, savage, and appreciably dark Would You Rather is considerably more interesting than its (confusing/vague/generic) title may indicate.
The phrase "Would You Rather," as you probably know, is a reference to a game teenagers play. ("Would you rather kiss Janie or.... lick a dog's food bowl?...

Would You Rather takes the titular party game to murderous ends, as a group of people are invited to play for their lives by the wealthy and sadistic Shepard Lambrick (Combs). The cast also includes Prom Night’s Brittany Snow, Jonathan Coyne, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Enver Gjonaj, Smash Cut’s Sasha Grey, C.H.U.D.’s John Heard, Charlie Hofheimer and Logan Miller; David Guy Levy directed from Steffer Schlachtenhaufen’s script. IFC Films will open Would You Rather at New York City’s IFC Center on Friday, February 8 and at Los Angeles’ Noho 7 on Friday, Feb. 15; the film will also be available via video-on-demand, iTunes and Xbox starting Feb. 8.
