More layoffs are underway at The CW, Variety has confirmed.
Sources say that over a dozen people have been let go from the network, mostly in the marketing and finance divisions. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, those released this time were supposed to be part of an initial round of cuts that took place late last year, but ongoing projects or remaining time on their contracts meant they were not let go until today.
This marks the latest layoffs at the broadcast network since Nexstar acquired a majority stake in it in October 2022. As Variety exclusively reported in November, between 30-40 staffers were laid off shortly after the deal closed, including longtime network communications head Paul Hewitt. Those came after network head Mark Pedowitz stepped down along with several other senior executives.

Rob Tuck, the veteran ad-sales chief of the CW network, is leaving the outlet as it moves forward under new ownership, according to two people familiar with the matter
Tuck has posted information about his coming retirement on social media. He has been with the CW and its antecedent, the WB, since mid-1995 — its first broadcast season — rising up through the ranks until he was named executive vice president of national sales in 2008. Before joining the WB, Tuck was group director of national broadcast at the large TeleVest media-buying agency, which was renamed MediaVest.
A spokeswoman for the CW did not immediately respond to a query seeking comment,
Tuck is one of the industry’s longest-serving TV ad-sales chiefs, having run the CW’s outreach efforts to Madison Avenue for nearly 14 years. During that time, he helped garner ad support for programing ranging from “Gossip Girl” and Wildcats” to “The Flash” and “Arrow.

Exclusive: Faced with their first decision on ordering more of the CW’s existing scripted series, the network’s new Nexstar owners opted against it. I hear there will be no back orders for the CW’s new fall series Walker: Independence, from CBS Studios, and The Winchesters, from Warner Bros. Television, whose freshman seasons will remain at the original 13 episodes.
I hear the same would apply to all CW freshman series and that the network’s head, Dennis Miller, stressed to producers and talent that no decisions about next season have been made, indicating that the lack of back orders does not mean cancellations.
Still, the decision further underlines Nexstar’s push to cut costs, including moving toward more. unscripted and cheaper scripted programming. Four CW scripted series are ending this season, The Flash, Riverdale, Nancy Drew and Stargirl. The list is expected to grow as the season progresses.

Exclusive: The new iteration of The CW is starting to take shape.
Two and a half months after Nexstar Media Group acquired a majority stake in the broadcaster, the new owners are starting to make moves that will determine its programming mix and who will be leading this charge.
Chief among these include the search for a top programming executive, a re-tooling of its scripted lineup and a drive to greenlight more unscripted formats.
This comes after a major round of layoffs at the company as well as the departure of long-term execs such as streaming and branding chief Rick Haskins, ad chief Mitch Nedick and comms chief Paul Hewitt.
Earlier this month, Dennis Miller was named President of The CW Network, replacing Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz. Deadline understands that he has been leading a search for a programming boss with executives such as former Pop TV boss Brad Schwartz...

Roughly 30-40 employees of The CW were laid off on Tuesday by new owner Nexstar Media, IndieWire has learned.
The move is the first large scale overhaul at the CW after Nexstar, the largest television-station owner in the United States, took control of the channel’s operation on October 3. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, The CW’s previous owners, sold a majority of their unprofitable joint venture to Nexstar in June.
Among those laid off on Tuesday were Paul Hewitt, the CW communications chief since it formed from the merger of Upn with The WB in 2006. In his place, Beth Feldman has been named SVP of Network Communications, taking on the role in addition to her current duties as Nexstar’s executive director of communication, Networks division.

Less than a month after Nexstar Media closed a deal to take 75 ownership of The CW, the broadcast network has been hit with dozens of layoffs.
The exact number of departures is still becoming clear, but one person with knowledge of the situation pegged it at about 30 to 40. While Nexstar is known for local stations, the company also operates NewsNation, which it overhauled and reformatted from its prior incarnation, WGN America, after acquiring Tribune Media in 2019. The lower cost profile of news programming, a distinctly different neighborhood from the scripted fare that briefly was Wgna’s specialty, was the driving motivation of the makeover.

PR chief Paul Hewitt has exited the CW after 22 years amid dozens of layoffs at the network, an individual with knowledge confirmed to TheWrap.
Beth Feldman, a former partner at Beyond PR Group, has been tapped by Nexstar to replace Hewitt, effectively immediately.
Hewitt’s exit — and the layoffs — join a slew of sweeping changes to the network under the control of Nexstar, most notably replacing CW CEO Mark Pedowitz with current president Dennis Miller, a former board member.
Beginning his career at Fox Entertainment’s research and marketing department, Hewitt worked his way up to the network’s senior vice president of network communication, overseeing all communications strategies, media relations and internal communications. The publicity executive worked at Upn when the company merged with The WB Network in 2006, and oversaw the launch of The CW as the vice president of corporate communications.

Nexstar laid off between 30-40 staffers at the CW network Tuesday, marking the first sweeping staffing overhaul at the “Walker” broadcaster since it changed ownership, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Among those cuts were Paul Hewitt, the longtime CW comms chief, who has been replaced by Beth Feldman. Additionally, multiple execs in distribution, strategy and affiliate relations were let go, with Google vet Rebekah Dopp taking over those departments.
Nexstar is wasting little time revamping The CW, a plan that began with the replacement of longtime CW president Mark Pedowitz being ousted upon the close of Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Nexstar has named Beyond PR Group partner Beth Feldman the senior vice president of network communications at The CW, replacing Paul Hewitt, the longtime comms chief at the younger-skewing broadcaster.
Feldman will oversee internal and external communication and program publicity effective immediately, taking over for Hewitt — who is leaving the network after 22 years, first at Upn before it merged with the WB to create The CW in 2006 — in the wake of Nexstar’s majority acquisition of the channel.

After 17 days, the 2019 Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer Press Tour has come to a close.
Below are 17 of our top takeaways from the never-ending TV media event occupying the Beverly Hilton ballroom. Thanks for all of the free coffee, but now we need some sleep.
ABC Is Getting Into the Live-tv Musical Game With “The Little Mermaid” After All
Despite delaying original plans for production two years ago, ABC is back in business with Ariel and friends under the sea — not long after Disney announced its own live-action project for the big screen. But this “live-action” musical won’t be anything like the other TV-musicals we’ve seen of late, like “Peter Pan” and “The Sound of Music.”
ABC’s “The Little Mermaid Live!” will involve watching the original movie, except all the musical numbers will be replaced with live actors singing and dancing in costume surrounded by a full set — plus puppets.

“Welcome everyone, thank you for joining us. You know, I’m not sure what’s appropriate here, but before we get started today, I feel like something needs to be said,” Hewitt began.
“Unfortunately, many of us woke up to news of another mass shooting, the second in 24 hours. So the real world is kind of interjected itself into our world of fantasy and make believe, and it really puts things into perspective. So this continues to just be heart breaking. I know everyone here collectively are keeping the victims and their families,” he said, taking a tearful pause to clear his throat...

The CW did not receive a single Emmy nomination this year. But that’s par for the course for the network, which rarely receives any sort of TV Academy love. The CW has won Golden Globes for “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” star Rachel Bloom, but the Emmy well remains dry — and that’s a bone of contention for The CW president Mark Pedowitz.
As “Jane the Virgin” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” end their runs this upcoming season, Pedowitz told reporters on Monday that he remains “disappointed in some way, shape or form that [‘Crazy Ex’ executive producer] Aline [Brosh McKenna], Rachel and [‘Jane’ executive producer] Jennie [Snyder Urman] and Gina and their teams and cast never got the accolades they deserved from the Academy.”
What’s more, “I’m more amazed that the Academy could not recognize ‘Crazy Ex’ for any of its original music, given they do original music week in and week out.”
