MGM celebrated its centennial on April 17th. Marcus Lowe established the studio by merging Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. Boasting it had “more stars than there are in heaven,” MGM may have been the biggest studio during the Golden Age of Hollywood, it has gone through many owners and regimes over the years but seems to on terra firma since Amazon acquired MGM in 2021. In fact, Amazon MGM Studios won best screenplay Oscar for “American Fiction.” And speaking of Academy Awards, MGM has earned numerous statuettes over the years. Here’s a look at five Best Picture winners produced between 1929-1958.

As President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “It is a splendid thing that for just fifteen cents, an American can go to a movie and look at the smiling face of a baby and forget his troubles.”
Few Hollywood stars were ever as big — or little — as Shirley Temple. This dimpled darling with her bouncy corkscrew curls and delightful tap-dance routines brought cheer and spread sunshine to moviegoers during the darkest days of the Great Depression. She was the No. 1 box-office draw from 1935 to 1938 and was the first child star to be presented with a special Juvenile Academy Award for her big-screen contributions during 1934. She even had her own line of licensed merchandise including look-alike dolls, dishes and clothing. Before 1935 ended, her income from licensed goods would be more than $100,000 – doubling what she made from her movies.

On Monday, some sharp-eyed members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were surprised by a small but perhaps significant twist in an invitation to recommend recipients for the next round of honorary Oscars.
That is, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, historically given to those whose “humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry,” is now described as recognizing those whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit “by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities.”
An Academy spokesperson declined comment on the change, and it wasn’t immediately clear how “inequities” or their rectification would be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors, which periodically grants the award at the annual Governors Awards banquet.
The next Governors Awards is set for Sunday, November 17, and members are invited to recommend possible recipients by April 19. The most recent Hersholt winner was Michelle Satter, who was recognized for her work with the Sundance Institute.

Happy 75th birthday to comedian and actor Billy Crystal! What better gift to celebrate than an honorary Oscar? The academy board of governors will meet later in the spring to decide the 2023 honorary recipients. We are hoping that acting governors Whoopi Goldberg, Marlee Matlin and Rita Wilson will put forth Crystal’s name.
Crystal has hosted the Oscars ceremony nine times from 1990 through 2012. He was spectacular in those appearances with an opening musical number each time and sheer joy throughout each show. He really set the standard for what an all-encompassing comedy and musical job can be done for a big awards ceremony. Who can forget his Hannibal Lecter impression with Anthony Hopkins, riding in on a horse to salute “Dances with Wolves,” honoring the elderly movie pioneer Hal Roach or his Jack Palance jokes, just to name a few? He was nominated 11 times at the Emmys for his work on the Oscars,...

1935 / 1.33: 1 / 60 Min.
Starring Lionel Barrymore, Bela Lugosi
Written by Guy Endore, Bernard Schubert
Directed by Tod Browning
Tod Browning died in 1962, living long enough to see his work enjoy a resurgence on late night’s Shock Theater, a syndicated TV package featuring Universal’s classic horror films. Browning’s Dracula was one of the crown jewels of that series but if you wanted to see more of the director’s work it probably wouldn’t be on television—his most infamous films were too lurid even for the midnight hour: potboilers populated by deformed and deranged circus performers, bloodthirsty magicians, and cross-dressing ventriloquists.
1932’s Freaks was the ne plus ultra of the Browning shockers, a sawdust soap opera pitting a beautiful prima donna against unorthodox carny performers—”unorthodox” because these folks were, on the surface, strange figures whose physical abberations made them outcasts everywhere except the circus.

In 2020, the Covid pandemic caused the motion picture academy to cancel the Governors Awards, which has been a stand-alone event since 2009. Instead, it presented the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to both Tyler Perry and the Motion Picture & Television Fund during the Oscars. This morale booster was a bright spot in the ceremony.
The Governors Awards are set to return on January 15, 2022. Honorary Oscars will be presented to multi-hyphenate Elaine May as well as actors Samuel L. Jackson and Liv Ullmann. Another actor, Danny Glover, will be feted with the Hersholt for his work on behalf of Unicef.
There have been four honorees at the Governors Awards every year but two since 2009. As detailed below, all but one of the academy’s 17 branches — Visual Effects — are represented among the roster of 138 winners of honorary Oscars. In the case of Visual Effects, the academy has presented special achievement awards to a host...

Tyler Perry and the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) will be the recipients of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards at this year’s Oscars from the Academy’s Board of Governors.
Both Perry and the MPTF will be presented with their awards on Oscars night on April 25. The Governors Awards were canceled this year, so this is the first time since 2009, when that ceremony was established as a separate event, that honorary awards will be handed out on Oscar night.
It’s also a first for the Academy to give out two Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards, and the first time it has given one to an organization rather than an individual. The Board of Governors agreed that it would amend the rules for the Governor Awards for this year only such that the Governors could give out two prizes and to “not just to an individual, but also to a...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced plans Thursday to honor filmmaker Tyler Perry and the Motion Picture Television Fund with Jean Hersholt Humanitarian awards at the 93rd annual Oscars.
“There has been such widespread generosity in our industry that limiting the Hersholt Humanitarian Award to one recipient, this year in particular, was impossible. So, we are breaking with tradition and giving two awards to honor that spirit,” said Academy President David Rubin.
The award is typically presented at the Academy’s Governors Awards event in the fall each year, but this year will be part of the Oscars ceremony. The MPTF will become the first organization to receive the honor, as it’s previously been reserved solely for people. The Board of Governors voted to amend the rules for this year only, allowing for two winners and the opportunity to bestow one upon an organization.

New Academy president David Rubin told would-be Oscar contenders packing Ray Dolby Ballroom that they were in the “anxiety-free zone.” It’s a soothing concept, but the truth is the Governors Awards are the well-mannered, black-tie starting gun to what will be a competitive race. This year’s selection reflects the Academy’s current emphasis on diversity, as the first Oscar-nominated woman director, Lina Wertmüller (“Seven Beauties”) and Native American actor Wes Studi (“The Last of the Mohicans”) joined long-overdue director David Lynch to accept honorary Oscars.
Supporting Actress frontrunner Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”) and her “Blue Velvet” costars Isabella Rossellini and Kyle MacLachlan lauded their director Lynch. “You have to let his quiet guide you,” said Rossellini. “He tries to capture the mysteries of our emotions, passions, and our lives.” Dern recalled first meeting with MacLachlan and Lynch, who doodled cartoons in ketchup at Bob’s Big Boy, and...

It was an historic night at the Governors Awards on Sunday, and not just because Lina Wertmuller wants Oscar to go through a gender change.
Ninety-one-year old Wertmuller was honored in part as a ground-breaker by being the first Oscar-nominated female director. Geena Davis took the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for tirelessly promoting gender parity in media and movies through her foundation. Wes Studi became the first Native American ever to receive an Oscar. And David Lynch got his long deserved statuette for being, well, David Lynch. It was an eclectic but highly deserving group of honorees that clearly represented the ever-evolving and fast pace of the Academy’s new face, one that emphasizes diversity and fighting for equality in membership with the still dominant numbers of white males. As new AMPAS president David Rubin said in his remarks, “that is changing.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made statements about inclusion, diversity, gender equity and creative risk-taking on Sunday night at the 11th annual Governors Awards, but it also learned a big lesson as it was making those statements.
The lesson: Sometimes, it doesn’t matter what else you do, because somebody is going to come along and steal the whole damn show.
In this case, that somebody was Lina Wertmüller, the 91-year-old Italian director who was given an Honorary Academy Award for provocative, groundbreaking films that included “The Seduction of Mimi,” “Love and Anarchy,” “Swept Away” and “Seven Beauties,” the 1977 film for which she became the first woman ever nominated for Best Director.

Lina Wertmüller wants to see a big change for the Oscars.
The 91-year-old Italian director had Isabella Rossellini acting as her translator while accepting her honorary Oscar on Sunday night at the Academy’s Governors Awards in Hollywood.
“She would like to change the Oscar to a feminine name,” Rossellini said. “She would like to call it ‘Anna.’”
Wertmüller was the first woman nominated for a directing Oscar for 1976’s “Seven Beauties.” Since then, only four other female directors have been nominated in the category with only one win going to Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker.”
Jon Hamm walked Sophia Loren onto the stage to help introduce Wertmüller. Also presenting was “Little Women” director Greta Gerwig, who said, “I learned the name Lina Wertmüller before I had seen her films.”
Jane Campion added, “How do you correct centuries of patriarchal domination? It started with Lina Wertmuller.”

On Sunday, four film folk — actress Geena Davis, director David Lynch, actor Wes Studi and director Lina Wertmuller — were feted by the motion picture academy at the Governors Awards. This non-televised event has been around since 2009 when the academy moved these de facto lifetime achievement awards off of the Oscars.
By not being part of the televised Academy Awards, this has meant more people could be honored each year as there were no time constraints to consider. To that end there have been four honorees every year but two since 2009. And this change has allowed for a wider range of talents to be tapped.
As detailed below, all but one of the academy’s 17 branches — Visual Effects — are now represented among the roster of 135 winners of honorary Oscars. In the case of Visual Effects, the academy has presented special achievement awards to a host of films in years in which there was no competitive category.

Honorary Oscars for 2019 will be presented this Sunday, October 27. That’s earlier than ever due to a much short Academy Awards season this year. Trophies will be presented at the Governors Awards in Hollywood to actress Geena Davis, director David Lynch, actor Wes Studi and director Lina Wertmuller. Members of the Academy board of governors chose and announced these four recipients back in the early summer.
Davis is receiving the Jean Hersholt Award for her humanitarian work. She won the Best Supporting Actress trophy for “The Accidental Tourist” (1988) and was also nominated for “Thelma and Louise” (1991). Other films in her career have included “The Fly,” “Beetlejuice,” “A League of Their Own” and “Speechless.”

The new documentary “This Changes Everything” examines the many obstacles that women have faced in the film industry, particularly when it comes to women working behind the camera. But against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and a larger discussion about the struggles facing women in the workplace, director Tom Donahue is circumspect about whether anything has changed in Hollywood. In our exclusive video interview (watch the video above) Donahue proclaims, “I’m not sure if we are at a tipping point or not… I certainly hope that we are.”
Donahue sees a reluctance to deviate from the status quo as the source of the gender imbalance in the film industry. “It’s really hard to get those powerful men to give up their power,” Donahue claims. “That’s a system, a boy’s club, that’s been in place for many decades. It’s very hard to break that.

Jennifer Fox has been set to return to produce the 11th Annual Governors Awards for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy President David Rubin announced today. Honorary Awards will be presented to director David Lynch, actor Wes Studi and director Lina Wertmüller, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to actress Geena Davis on Sunday, October 27, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center.
“This year’s Governors Awards recipients are emblematic of the diversity, global scope, and bold artistry the Academy seeks to represent and celebrate. We are so fortunate to have Jennifer Fox returning to create a tribute to four artists who’ve made such a lasting cultural impact,” said Rubin.
“It is an honor to be asked to come back and produce the Governors Awards,” said Fox. “David Lynch, Lina Wertmüller, Wes Studi, and Geena Davis are groundbreakers and I’m looking forward to celebrating their extraordinary accomplishments.

Hey, did you know that Tod Browning made a vampire movie in the 1930s? And that it starred Bela Lugosi as the titular vampire? And that said vampire was doggedly pursued by a professor with knowledge of vampires that stretched credibility? Oh, and did you know that I’m not talking about Dracula?
Since you’ve read the title above, I’m guessing I didn’t just make your head explode. But you can see where I’m going with this. The similarities between Browning’s quintessential vampire film and his 1935 not-so-quintessential vampire film Mark of the Vampire would make it seem like the latter is a pretty blatant attempt by MGM to cash in on his bloodsucker success. But is that indeed the case?
Well, let’s look at the premise for Mark of the Vampire. Although set in “modern day” early 20th century, the setting certainly looks familiar.

Just this weekend we loved you all anew for that robust conversation about worthy Honorary Oscar recipients. News broke yesterday that the Board of Governors has named the four 2019 recipients. Honorary Oscars will go to the actor Wes Studi, and two previously nominated directors, David Lynch (who we've been campaigning for) and Lina Wertmüller who was famously the first woman ever nominated for the directing Oscar for her total masterpiece Seven Beauties. In addition to those three artists, the actress Geena Davis will receive this year's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. That's a special subdivision of the Honorary that's not actually about the movies but your "outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes"...

One of the most famous women in the world, Angelina Jolie, will celebrate her 44th birthday on June 4, 2019. Jolie started acting right out of high school, and despite her outward appearance, she has described herself as an awkward outsider at Beverly Hills High School, where she was teased because by her rich classmates. She lived with her mother in an apartment, and the family existed only on child support from her father actor Jon Voight, who had financial problems of his own. She later transferred to a different school and found her identity as what she describes as “a punk chick with tattoos.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors voted Saturday, three months earlier than usual, to select their choices for the 11th annual Governors Awards. The Academy moved up the date for the Governors Awards from November 16 to Sunday, October 27. The nearly three-week jump backward reflects a similar shift for the February 9, 2020 Oscars.
The non-televised awards program always draws a number of Oscar contenders to the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland to celebrate the honorary Oscar winners as well as the occasional Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Irving J. Thalberg Memorial Awards.
This year’s selection reflects the Academy’s current emphasis on diversity, as Oscar-nominated Italian director Lina Wertmüller (“Seven Beauties”) and Native American actor Wes Studi (“The Last of the Mohicans”) join long-overdue director David Lynch to accept Honorary Oscars. Exclusive: I have learned that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors will convene in a special session Saturday to select their choices for the 11th annual Governors Awards. The latest Oscar winners are being chosen at the earliest date ever, fully three months earlier than usual. The period right after Labor Day usually is when the board gathers to pick the year’s first Oscar winners, a group that can be selected for an Honorary Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and/or the Irving J. Thalberg Memorial Award.
Last year the announcement was made September 5, and Honorary Oscars went to actress Cicely Tyson, composer Lalo Schifrin and publicist Marvin Levy, and a Thalberg Award to Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall (the first given since Francis Coppola’s in 2009).
So why so early this year? Everything is moving up on the calendar for the Academy this time around.

Whenever the subject of who should get Honorary Oscars — or the Governors Awards, as they now are known — comes up, there has not been a single year, not one, when Doris Day’s name was not at the top of the speculation. But it never happened. The Academy’s Board of Governors never even went the Debbie Reynolds route by voting this renowned animal-rights activist the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, perhaps because it has human in its title. Although she often referred to herself as the girl singer in the band, her remarkable movie career spanned a couple of decades during the 50’s and 60’s, and about three dozen movies — frequently in what might be known as Doris Day movies — and maybe that is why the Academy never honored her. Or perhaps they just knew this star, who retreated from the business almost entirely, never would show up. Still, in her big-screen prime,...

Audrey Hepburn would’ve celebrated her 90th birthday on May 4, 2019. The Oscar-winning actress only appeared in a handful of movies before her death in 1993 at the age of 63, but many of them remain classics. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Hepburn was born in 1929 in Ixelles, Brussels. Her family moved to the Netherlands in 1939 after Britain declared war on Germany, and when Hitler’s army invaded in 1940, they were forced to remain for another five years. Hepburn was affected by the occupation both physically and psychologically, witnessing atrocities and suffering from malnutrition when food became scarce. (She would owe her famously slim waistline to this.)
Once the war ended in 1945, Hepburn began ballet training in Amsterdam and started appearing as a chorus girl in several musicals after moving to London. She popped up in small roles...

Few Hollywood stars were ever as big –or little — as Shirley Temple. The combination of Martin as the lady-killing straight man and Lewis as the spastic goofball started as a night club act and a radio program. They appeared in 17 films together before their breakup in 1956.

Paul Newman would’ve celebrated his 94th birthday on January 26, 2019. The Oscar-winning legend appeared in dozens of films throughout his lengthy career, but how many of those titles are classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 20 of Newman’s greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
For years Newman was the perpetual Oscar bridesmaid, racking up failed Best Actor nominations for “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958), “The Hustler” (1961), “Hud” (1963), “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), “Absence of Malice” (1981), and “The Verdict” (1982), as well as a Best Picture bid for producing “Rachel, Rachel” (1968). The Academy handed him an Honorary Award in 1985, only to give him a competitive prize the very next year for “The Color of Money” (1986). He scored subsequent bids in lead for “Nobody’s Fool” (1994) and supporting for “Road to Perdition” (2002).

Ok, I misspoke. Yes, there was a calamity of sorts the last time that Oscar decided to ditch having at least one official host.
As I was writing about the possibility that the Academy Awards show might do away with having a host after the Kevin Hart debacle, I looked up if the star-filled event ever went free-form without an anchor since it began airing on TV. I noted there were four times when there wasn’t a true host and assumed that there were no ill effects afterwards.
See No host with the most? Word is that the Oscars are considering to go emcee-less after Hart failure
Well, I now must admit I was wrong. First, some history:
*The first three years, all back to back, went pretty much Ok with a cast of stars taking turns handling the chores. At the 1969 Oscars, the show’s producer, Gower Champion,...

Updated: Two days after Deadline revealed that Kevin Hart was the choice to host the Academy Awards, he has put himself in danger of losing his dream job because of the viral momentum of old social media missives that betray insensitivity towards the gay community at the least and an attitude of homophobia at the worst. This has been building all day.
Hart, who is overseas, finally responded with an Instagram post in which he is shirtless save for gold chains or diamonds, and where he delivers this message:
“Stop looking for reasons to be negative..Stop searching for reasons to be angry…I swear I wish you guys could see/feel/understand the mental place that I am in,” he said. “I am truly happy.”
Kevin, put on a shirt, and try again. And do it quickly.

Charlton Heston would’ve celebrated his 95th birthday on October 4, 2018. Born in 1923, the actor became a household name with leading roles in action adventures and biblical epics. But his credits extended past those two well-worn genres. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
After serving in the United States Army Air Force during WWII, Heston made his professional movie acting debut with the film noir “Dark City” (1950). His big breakthrough came just two years later with Cecil B. DeMille‘s big top soap opera “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1952), in which he played the circus manager. Though an audience favorite in its time, the film often ranks among the all-time worst Oscar winners for Best Picture.
Heston later reunited with DeMille to play the Old Testament prophet Moses in “The Ten Commandments” (1956), which brought him a Golden Globe nomination.
