General consensus among Halloween fans typically ranks Halloween: Resurrection last out of the eight original films, which is perhaps why efforts have rarely been made to produce special features for the film. 20 years later, defenders of the oft-maligned sequel finally have some new insight into the production.
Scream Factory’s The Halloween 4K Collection (1995-2002) 4K Ultra HD box set boasts new interviews with several Resurrection cast and crew members that were produced by Justin Beahm’s Reverend Entertainment. Here are seven things I learned…
1. Actors shot their own headset camera footage
The reality TV angle was an interesting (and ahead-of-its-time) plot point, but the number of cameras involved complicated the shoot. “We had a video village that was just miles and miles of cable where there was something like 20 monitors of all the different feeds,” recalls production designer Troy Hansen.

In “Mad Men,” Jon Hamm had his corner office: the room with a view, overlooking Madison Avenue, where Don Draper could work, drink and brainstorm in peace. Maybe that’s why the actor was drawn to playing a lowly paper-pusher with a bad mustache and big dreams of occupying such a space in “Corner Office,” a low-key, screw-loose workplace satire that offers audiences a side of Hamm they’ve never seen before — and might not be in such a hurry to experience again, unless the toil-from-home blues of the pandemic have made them receptive to the call of cubicle life.
Premiering at the Tribeca Festival, “Corner Office” is director Joachim Back’s slightly taxing cinematic take on “The Room,” a slender novel by Swedish actor-cum-author Jonas Karlsson, unread by me, that bills itself as “a short, sharp and fiendish fable in the tradition of Franz Kafka, Samuel Beckett and Charlie Kauffman.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” including the ending.]
There are times when “Brand New Cherry Flavor” seems to exist in its own universe. The Netflix series, based on Todd Grimson’s book of the same name, takes place in an early-’90s Los Angeles, bathed in equal layers of possibility and dread.
Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) arrives in this thick rainbow soup of a city with only one valuable item in tow: a short film called “Lucy’s Eye” that transfixes anyone who watches it. Director Matt Sobel, who was behind the camera for the show’s fourth and fifth episodes, directed the film-within-a-film. It’s an ideal example of how “Brand New Cherry Flavor” takes a hazy, fictional version of LA filled with inexplicable oddities and delivers something tangible.
“It’s got this raw energy, right? It’s not supposed to be this perfect masterpiece,” said series co-creator and co-showrunner Nick Antosca. “It’s supposed to show...

Few things are more frustrating to watch than a show that is all style and very little substance. But the themes of Netflix’s new Gothic horror series, “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” are so resonant and timely that it wouldn’t be entirely fair to accuse it of that offense even though it makes no good use of them. Instead, the show overcompensates by using horror staples like the undead, a witch’s curse and a classic rock soundtrack to cover up what it lacks — a point.
And yet the premise is so promising! Creators Lenore Zion and Nick Antosca present a dark fiction piece set in early-’90s Los Angeles that hinges on the terrible treatment of female filmmakers whose work is often ignored or even co-opted by greedy, old white men with more clout. This still happens, with myriad think pieces interrogating the problem, and particularly to young...
