Near the turn of the century a struggling war correspondent named Edgar Wallace began churning out detective stories for British monthlies like Detective Story Magazine to help make the rent. Creative to a fault, his preposterously prolific output (exacerbated by ongoing gambling debts) soon earned him a legion of fans along with a pointedly ambiguous sobriquet, “The Man Who Wrote Too Much.”
A reader new to Wallace’s work could be excused for thinking the busy writer was making it up as he went along… because that’s pretty much what he did. He dictated his narratives, unedited, into a dictaphone for transcription by his secretary where they would then...

As someone who grew up haunting video stores throughout the late 80s and well into the 90s, director Rick Sloane was something of an icon. You see I was one of those teenagers who loved to rent any and all T&A comedies I could lay my hands on, and Sloane was the man behind Vice Academy and its six, yes six(!) sequels. Why Vice Academy? Well my other love at the time was horror movies, and in particular those featuring scream queens such as Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, Brinke Stevens and Monique Gabrielle… and Vice Academy – and its immediate sequel – starred the one and only Ms. Quigley – it was, at least for me at the time, kismet: Linnea Quigley and T&A comedy? Like many children growing up in the 1960s, Kenneth Hall loved monsters. Ever since he was a toddler, his mother — who was an especially big fan of Vincent Price — took him and his brother to see films like The Brides Of Dracula, Curse Of The Werewolf, and The Pit And The Pendulum. And that was all it took. At age 10, Hall discovered Famous Monsters of Filmland, and with the help of the trusty TV Guide, he and his brother made a point to watch as many of the films they read about as they could, even if it meant sneaking out of bed and staying up late to catch a showing of The Deadly Mantis. Like many Monster Kids of his time, there was a now-or-never mentality that came with a lack of home video, but growing up in Jacksonville, Fl did give Hall an extra advantage. It was the...

The cast and crew of A Christmas Horror Story have stuffed the cinematic stockings with a delightfully devious new take on the holiday season. With A Christmas Horror Story now out in select theaters and viewable on VOD and iTunes, Daily Dead caught up with Steve Hoban—one of the film's three directors—to discuss working with William Shatner, setting the horror anthology film in the same town from the Ginger Snaps movies, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with Daily Dead today. I really enjoyed A Christmas Horror Story and believe it will become a holiday cult classic that horror fans can happily unwrap each year. How did you get involved with this project and what appealed to you the most after reading the script for the first time?

Christmas is a time for feel-good movies. It’s a Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and the usual Hallmark Hall of Fame drivel that hits the airwaves every December. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the mainstream Christmas classics as much as the next guy. But at night, when my family is all snug in their beds, that’s when I drag out my sick and twisted Christmas collection…
Black Christmas, Christmas Evil, Silent Night Deadly Night, Don’t Open Till Christmas, those are the films I like to cuddle up to with a spiked eggnog. What is my favorite? That’s a difficult question. I love them all for different reasons, but if I had to pick one, I would have to pick a recent import from Finland called Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale.
