Many would consider Clint Eastwood to be a committed performer when it comes to actors who will do whatever it takes to fulfill a role. Throughout his storied career, the actor-director, 93, has brought a surprising amount of energy to his numerous roles, going above and beyond with character development, stunts, and various musical performances.
And thus, it is painful to see such legends get older. Yet there is something truly special about seeing their rare appearances in public. But fans could not believe their eyes when the 30th Mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, who will turn 94 on May 31, made a rare public appearance last month.

The MonsterVerse franchise is an underrated contender in the cinematic universe wars, with a clear watching order that avoids confusion or an overwhelming number of entries. Part of the success of the franchise is that the continuity and canon are not overly complicated — well, it is a franchise about giant monsters punching each other in the face, after all.
After doing what all big cinematic universes do and expanding to TV — albeit with a really good show in this case, the MonsterVerse is back on the big screen with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The movie is set to not only bring the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World together once again but also bring a bit of a buddy-cop vibe to the MonsterVerse.

The King of the Monsters is standing taller than ever since he became a surprise Oscar-winner earlier this month, but filmdom’s most famous kaiju isn’t about to let his newfound prestige get the better of him. Anyone worried that Godzilla might pull an Adam McKay and make a sudden pivot towards self-importance will be delighted to find that “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” eagerly strips both of its namesakes of whatever seriousness they might have accrued over the years, even if that means stripping them of their souls along with it.
Don’t be confused by the multiplication suggested by the silent “x” in its title: This goofy-ass, clumsily assembled Saturday morning cartoon of a movie might as well be called “Godzilla Minus Everything,” if only because the more accurate “Godzilla Minus Everything Plus Dan Stevens in a Hawaiian Shirt” wouldn’t fit on a marquee.

Each week on “The Pit Stop,” Trixie Mattel recaps the latest episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 alongside a guest host. Following Friday’s eighth episode, reigning champion and Mother of season 15 Sasha Colby makes her recap debut to break down this season’s “Snatch Game” performances. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Sasha and Trixie have fun addressing the “unsolicited shade” of this season and how even when Plane Jane calls anyone “sister” feels like subtle shade as well. Sasha gives Jane some defense by admitting that as drag queens they all “just have a crippling desire for people to love us” and Jane is no different. When it came to the reading challenge of her season, Sasha was impressed by Loosey Laduca and Malaysia Babydoll Foxx; this season the standouts for her were Jane and Xunami Muse.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 16 continued on February 23 with the eighth episode in RuPaul’s quest to find “America’s next drag superstar.” Previously in episode seven, Plasma enjoyed her shining moment as the star and challenge winner in “The Sound of Rusic” while Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige and Megami didn’t strike a chord with the judges in their supporting roles. Despite a flipless Lip Sync for Your Life, Mhi’ya came out on top once again and sent Megami back to New York.
This week, the remaining 9 queens head to the celebrity dais with the classic impersonation challenge, “Snatch Game.” Seated at the judges’ dais for episode 8 was Emmy winning host RuPaul Charles, longtime bestie Michelle Visage, recurring judge Carson Kressley, and actress Kyra Sedgwick as the extra special guest.

Austin-based indie directors David and Nathan Zellner have spent more time thinking about Sasquatch than most filmmakers do musing about human beings. In 2011, they brought “Sasquatch Birth Journal 2” to the Sundance Film Festival, a four-minute faux nature documentary in which a hirsute creature can be seen giving birth to an equally furry infant. Thirteen years later, the siblings return with “Sasquatch Sunset,” a one-joke feature that leaves the amateur videographer gimmick behind, committing itself to tracking a year in the lives of a Sasquatch family of four — let’s call them Big Foot, Mama Foot, Tender Foot and Buster (the runt of the litter).
In case you were wondering, the joke is that the film exists at all … because who would finance, much less star in, an 88-minute portrait of these apocryphal brutes? The late-arriving punchline comes with the end credits, when the names Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg appear...

The costumes and makeup are going to get you first (they’re fantastic), but don’t discount the sneaky emotional power that lurks under enough hair and skin and dirt and little, skinny pee-pees to make even the most eagle-eyed of audiences not quite realize they’re looking at Jesse Eisenberg or Riley Keough. In David and Nathan Zellner’s long-gestating, oft-teased, and mildly secretive “Sasquatch Sunset,” the four-strong family unit at the story’s heart might not look like you and me, but they sure feel human.
That’s not to say they’re not taking by their more animalistic tendencies, as Eisenberg, Keough, Nathan Zellner, and Christophe Zajac-Denek spend much of the film’s running time — which clocks in at a slim 89 minutes, but it can feel much longer during slower stretches, and covers a full year in their lives — farting, fucking, eating, snorting, sniffing, and even communicating...

The New York Times is planning a major new interview franchise, one that will live across its audio podcast division and within The New York Times Magazine.
The new franchise will be released as a weekly podcast, and will also be published as a Q&a in the Magazine, it will be co-hosted by David Marchese, who writes the Magazine’s “Talk” interview column, and Lulu Garcia-Navarro, the veteran NPR journalist who joined the Times to host its First Person interview series.
The new interview series will launch in 2024, with a name still to be determined, though in a note to staff Thursday, Times audio chief Sam Dolnick, Magazine editor Jake Silverstein and director of audio Paula Szchuman said that it will “build on the success of David’s Talk column, which has been one of the most popular features on our site over the past five years.”

Exclusive: While it will continue to have a deal with Skydance Media for tent pole live action film and TV fare, Apple is parting ways with Skydance Animation, the company run by former Pixar chief John Lassiter. Their multi-year deal has come to a conclusion, and Apple is making other kinds of films, notably this weekend’s opener Killers of the Flower Moon, which opens globally Friday.
Skydance Animation will land in a new deal quickly, and Apple will give back to the company the project Spellbound, which had been set at Apple TV+ but will not move forward.
Skydance and Apple will remain partnered on a number of upcoming feature film and TV series, but mutually agreed the animated feature was not the best fit for Apple Original Films’ expanding narrative film slate. Apple is still in the animation game, coming off an Oscar win for Best Animated short The Boy,...

A dearth of new release films allowed Zhang Yimou’s “Under the Light” to retain a comfortable lead at the China box office over the weekend, in its third week of release.
The contemporary crime drama film earned $13.5 million (RMB97.2 million) between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. Since releasing on Sept. 28, it has accumulated gross revenues of $163 million (RMB1.17 billion).
Zhang will be feted with a lifetime achievement award in Japan next week, where the Tokyo International Film Festival will play his February record breaker “Full River Red,” but not “Under the Light.”
“The Volunteers: To the War,” a 1950s-set propaganda film directed by Chen Kaige, earned $9.6 million (RMB69.2 million) and rose from third to second place. It now has a cumulative of $93.2 million. Chinese comedy franchise film “The Ex-Files 4: Marriage Plan” took $8.8 million in its third week of release, advancing its cumulative to $123 million.

Director-writer-editor Brett Morgen’s David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream is certainly unlike any musician-centered film you’ve seen before. The movie plays out almost as if the viewer is watching through a kaleidoscope, a fever dream of footage and soundscapes from the Bowie archives as well as from films and artworks the artist referenced in his storied career. Nominated for four Emmys this year (directing, writing, editing and sound editing), the director sat down with THR to discuss how he arrived on Bowie as a subject and his artistic process.
What draws you to a documentary subject at the outset?
As I reflect back over the years, I’m definitely drawn toward wildly creative people who live life on their own terms. That seems to be the one consistent link between Robert Evans, Jane Goodall, Kurt Cobain and David Bowie. On a more superficial level, when I’m approaching a subject,...

Jane Goodall‘s path to becoming the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees started with one of the most relatable experiences of all time: having a crush on a fictional character. While promoting her new Apple TV+ series “Jane,” Goodall stopped by “The Kelly Clarkson Show” Tuesday and spilled on what led her down her groundbreaking path.
“I read ‘Tarzan of the Apes’ and fell in love with him,” Goodall said. “And I was very jealous. He married the wrong Jane.”
That book planted the seed of Goodall’s dream to eventually go to Africa and to live and write among animals. According to the renowned anthropologist, “everybody” laughed at her dreams except for her mother.

Clouds of gloom have settled over much of the documentary field, brought on by multiple factors: a sluggish acquisition market, cutbacks in the executive ranks at Netflix and Showtime, uncertainty around Hulu’s future, CNN Films taking doc production in house, sharper scrutiny of budgets and content needs, and… well, the list goes on.
