Back in 2008, a music video landed on YouTube — then still largely in its infancy and mostly dominated by amateur video footage — and caused a bit of a stir, amassing a cult following and 1 million views. More than 15 years on, the video has morphed — extremely slowly — into a full-length feature film.
Chris Dane Owens’ upbeat love song “Shine on Me” was already a catchy slice of rock with some heavy ’80s inspirations. But it was the epic accompanying video — which he made for $70,000, no small sum in today’s music video world — that proved to be the real hit, largely for squeezing into its four minutes practically every clichéd trope and inspiration from popular swords-and-sorcery fantasy entertainment. “The Princess Bride” features prominently, but then there are elements of “Xena,” “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Dungeons and Dragons” and many, many more.

Back in 1990, CBS’s The Flash was a favorite of young comic book fans. Growing up as a young comic book fan in the ’80s and ’90s was not easy. All you current comic fans have it so easy. I grew up in the dark times, my friends. We were glad when anything comic book related was on movies and TV. We were so desperate that we would make excuses for anything.
Superman III? Hey, he gets to fight an evil Superman.
Generation X? Look they’re in the X-mansion!
Howard the Duck? Yeah….I got nothing.
But every once in a while someone would get it right. Richard Donner’s Superman started it but it was Tim Burton’s Batman film in 1989 that started to change things. Sure we would eventually get duds like Batman & Robin, but we also had Batman The Animated Series and Blade. Yet for a long time,...

It was on March 30, 1988 when Tim Burton unleashed one of his most wacky, vibrant and endearing original films on audiences everywhere, the madcap supernatural comedy Beetlejuice which firmly established Burton as one of the most forward-thinking visual storytellers of his, or any generation. While the film might have initially been birthed inside co-writer Michael McDowell’s imagination, Burton relied on an array of talents and artisans to help him bring his vision to life throughout production.
On the effects side of things, there were a handful of extremely talented artists assembled to work on Beetlejuice who were tasked with creating not only the titular character, but all kinds of off-the-wall creatures and entities that made the film a standout amongst its peers that year at the Academy Awards ceremony.
Robert Short, an artist who has worked in Hollywood for more than 40 years now, recalled his initial impressions of Beetlejuice and...

There never has been (nor will there ever be) anything quite like Beetlejuice, that inimitable horror comedy concoction hailing from the demented minds of screenwriter Michael McDowell, plus writer/producer Larry Wilson and script doctor extraordinaire Warren Skaaren, filtered through the wacky gothic lens of director Tim Burton.
To celebrate Beetlejuice‘s Los Angeles return to the big screen at the Nuart Theatre at midnight tonight, December 20th, Tfh decided to take a look back at the film’s singular significance 31 years later.
As our tale unfurls, Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) are a fairly bland couple in the throes of (bland) domestic bliss. They occupy a pleasant, spacious house in the leafy suburb of Winter River, Connecticut. Adam owns a hardware store up the road, and enjoys whiling away his free time building a remarkably thorough model replica of Winter River while jamming out to Harry Belafonte songs.

As a kid who grew up in the video store there were a few staples in my cinematic diet – none more so than the VHS releases from Imperial and Trans World Entertainment. From chop-socky flicks featuring an incredibly young Jackie Chan, to the ninja films of Sho Kosugi, I could not get enough of the Far East fight action. However the death of VHS also saw the death of those types of films being freely available here in the UK. Sure you can go down the import route (which I did for a number of those dear-to-my-heart action movies of the early 80s) but there’s nothing quite like walking into a store and picking...

An Oregon police affidavit says a robber at the Home Federal Bank two weeks ago demanded money by giving the teller a note written on the back of a grocery receipt. It was only part of the receipt, Bend Detective Jeff Frickey said in the affidavit, but it had the last four digits of a food stamp account and the account balance - enough to get investigators going. State records provided a name to go with the account number, the Bend Bulletin reported, and an online search of the name turned up a pawn-shop transaction with a telephone number. Related:...

R.I.P. Emmy-winning television pioneer and comedy legend Sid Caesar died Wednesday at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 91. Caesar was one of the most beloved entertainers in America during the '50s and one of TV's first true superstars thanks to the success of his 90-minute sketch comedy/variety program Your Show of Shows, which eschewed the vaudeville-influenced slapstick comedy of the day for absurdist sketches containing characters and situations. Legendary actor, comedian and producer Carl Reiner praised his good friend, calling him the "greatest sketch comedian-monologist that television ever produced" in an interview with Knx-am in Los Angeles, via Variety.

To list every single make-up creation that has ever wowed us would be a fruitless, never-ending task with new weird, wonderful and amazing works being introduced to movie audiences year after year. Narrowing down a list that vast to just a 100 or even 50 would require some movie magic in itself. So to narrow out the list with just 20 make-up creations required a bit of divine intervention and some restrictions.
In choosing these make-up creations, my criteria was that there must be the physical billed actor in the make-up and with little or no animatronics involved. I’m sure there will be a lot of debate and disagreement with my list because of this, but it’s only fair that the actor in make-up is given his or her fair share of the credit in bringing that character to life. While Roger Corman, as either a director or producer, can deliver entertaining movies on a stunningly low budget, the law of averages demands that he comes out with a few clunkers. Even the best directors in Hollywood make a stinker now and then, so why shouldn't we expect the same from the King of the B's? And if you're wondering about the number of turkeys Corman has under his belt, think about his massive film catalog (close to 400 producing credits alone). And the budget from most of those films wouldn't cover the weekly catering cost on a major studio production.
Besides, even a Corman turkey can have moments of fun. Up from the Depths and Demon in Paradise, the latest double feature in the Corman Cult Classic series, aren't near as good as some of the earlier Shout! Factory releases, but you won't clawing your eyes out, either.
Both films...
