Telefonica’s Movistar Plus+, Spain’s biggest pay TV-svod operator, is set to co-produce new movies from Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Iciar Bollaín, Alberto Rodríguez, Óliver Laxe and Ana Rujas. It’s a move which sees the high-end Spanish TV powerhouse become one of Spain’s most significant movie players.
Titles in the slate are backed by top Spanish producers such as Agustín Almodóvar and Esther García at El Deseo – backing Laxe’s next – and Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo at their high-flying new production house Suma Content, producing what will be Rujas’ debut feature as a director.
The acclaimed “La Mesías,” the latest series from Los Javis – as Ambrossi and Calvo are known – will have its international premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where it will the only European series at this year’s event.

In two new landmark, multi-year deals for Spain’s top pay TV operator, Movistar Plus+ has inked partnership carriage deals with Warner Bros. Discovery and SkyShowtime. Both agreements were announced Friday.

SkyShowtime launched in February 2023 in Spain. The Movistar Plus+ pact marks SkyShowtime’s first deal with a Spanish operator.

Pedro Almodóvar’s El Deseo is teaming up once again with Peru’s most prominent producer, Tondero, to co-produce Peruvian filmmaker Salvador del Solar’s second pic after his lauded feature debut, “Magallanes.”
Titled “Un lugar para Ramon” (“A Place for Ramon”), the drama is set against the backdrop of Peru’s months-long Covid-19 lockdown where two men, a Peruvian national who is confined to his apartment with the ashes of his estranged father, meets a Spaniard who is unable to leave the country because Lima’s airport has been shut down.
Thrown together by the unusual circumstances, their friendship evolves into deeper and more ambiguous terrain.
“I would liken it to two beings stuck on an island together where they are isolated and detached from the rest of the world,” said Del Solar who wrote the script with Hector Galvez, best known for directing and/or writing “Nn” and “Paraiso.

Netflix has acquired exclusive rights for Latin America to Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” which won Penélope Cruz the best actress award at September’s 78th Venice Film Festival.
Struck by Netflix and El Deseo, Pedro and brother Agustín Almodóvar’s Madrid-based production company, the deal marks the first time that Netflix has taken all and exclusive rights to a territory on a first-run Almodóvar film.
Hailed by Variety as Almodóvar’s best movie since “All About My Mother,” “Parallel Mothers” will be released in Latin America at the beginning of the 2022, Netflix announced Tuesday.
Almodóvar’s films have traditionally been released by a stable network of theatrical distributors. Announced this April, for instance, Sony Pictures Classics acquisition of rights to North America, Australia and New Zealand on “Parallel Mothers” represented the 13th collaboration between the distributor and El Deseo.
Latin America’s distinct distribution challenge, however, is that it is grossly under-screened.

Pedro Almodóvar has dropped the first official trailer for “Madres paralelas,” which is set to open this year’s Venice Film Festival.
“Madres paralelas” is led by long-time Almodóvar favorite Penélope Cruz who is joined by key cast members Aitana Sánchez-Gijón (“Boca a Boca”) and Milena Smit (“Cross the Line”), “Veneno” duo Israel Elejalde and Daniela Santiago, and two more Almodóvar regulars in Julieta Serrano and Rossy de Palma, co-stars of the Oscar-nominated “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.”
“Madres paralelas” — “Parallel Mothers” in English — turns on a trio of mothers, played by Cruz, Gijón and Smit, and expands Almodóvar’s previous depictions of womanhood by turning the film’s focus on imperfect mothers.
In the dialogue-free trailer, we’re treated to a palette that marks the film as an Almodóvar with almost no other details needed. The film’s trio of mothers are seen in varying stages...

The film sees the Spanish auteur reuniting with Cruz, a frequent collaborator, most recently in Almodóvar’s 2019 “Pain and Glory” opposite Antonio Banderas. “Mothers” also stars former San Sebastián fest best actress winner Aitana Sánchez Gijón (“Volaverunt”) and newcomer Milena Smit (“No matarás”).
Almodóvar’ latest work centers on three mothers — portrayed by Cruz, Gijón and Smit — and expands his previous depictions of womanhood, by turning his focus on imperfect mothers, in a departure from his prior works exploring mothers and motherhood which include “All About My Mother” and “Pain and Glory.”

Pedro Almodóvar and his favorite female lead Penelope Cruz look set to re-team on feature “Madres paralelas,” a Madrid-set drama that returns to Almodóvar’s biggest creative inspiration — motherhood — and a model that has served him very well over the last 30 years.
Set to go into pre-production in October, “Madres paralelas” is scheduled to shoot from February next year and bow commercially in Spanish theaters by the end of 2021, Agustín Almodóvar — Pedro Almodóvar’s brother and producer — told Variety.
Though there is still no formal contract with Cruz, she has read and liked the screenplay, Pedro Almodóvar commented.

However, three months of confinement during Spain’s Covid-19 crisis allowed him to advance and finish the screenplay, which turns on two mothers who give birth the same day. El Deseo is financing Nieva en Benidorm, the new movie by the Catalan director, filming for which kicked off on Monday in the titular multilingual tourist hotspot. The fact that, for the last few decades, Pedro Almodóvar and his brother Agustín – ever accompanied by their faithful collaborator Esther García – have not restricted themselves to producing only the films by the Manchegan helmer (who has been Oscar-nominated this year for Pain & Glory) has been demonstrated time and again over the years. For instance, they have put their names to various titles by filmmakers such as Lucrecia Martel (Zama), Álex de la Iglesia (Acción mutante) and Isabel Coixet, in fact financing two previous features by the latter. Monday 20 January saw the shoot kick off for Nieva en Benidorm (lit....
The European Film Academy has unveiled its nominations for the 32nd European Film Awards with the ceremony to be held December 7 in Berlin. Among the titles to figure in the races, three are tied with four mentions each including Roman Polanski’s An Officer And A Spy, Pedro Almodovar’s Pain And Glory and Marco Bellocchio’s The Traitor. The latter two are also the Oscar representatives from their respective Spain and Italy and give Sony Pictures Classics a combined eight nods at the EFAs.
While Polanski remains a controversial figure, there has been a divide between U.S. and Euro perspectives in the #MeToo era. His Dreyfus Affair drama, An Officer And A Spy, which also has Efa nominations for Director, Actor and Screenwriter, was one of the most contested titles at the Venice Film Festival where it debuted earlier this year. It went on to win the Grand Jury Prize there.

The Spanish Film Institute (Icaa) has honored filmmaker, screenwriter and theater director Josefina Molina with this year’s National Cinematography Prize.
A pioneering female director who began her career in the largely male-dominated world of Spanish cinema in the 1960s, Molina has directed such works as 1973’s “Vera, un cuento cruel”, the 1978 TV series “El Camino” (“The Road”) and the 1989 feature “Esquilache.”
The award – given to a figure in any part of Spain’s film industry, not just cinematographers – marks the first time that the prize has been presented to a female director in its near 40-year history.
In selecting Molina as this year’s recipient, the Icaa jury said it was correcting a historical debt in honoring the filmmaker, who it described as a “model for several generations of present and future filmmakers.”

Just in time for awards season, Sony Pictures Classics has set October 4 as the release date for Oscar winner Pedro Almodóvar’s newest film, Pain & Glory. Sony International opened the film in Spain March 22 and it makes its big debut in competition at Cannes. The film reunites Almodovar with Antonio Banderas, his collaborator on films including the actor’s breakout, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down and Women On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Raúl Arévalo, Nora Navas, Julieta Serrano, and Penélope Cruz are all involved.
The film tells of a series of re-encounters experienced by Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered. First loves, second loves, his mother, mortality, an actor with whom the director worked, the sixties, the eighties, the present and the emptiness, the immeasurable emptiness at the impossibility of continuing to film.

Madrid — “I was six-years-old when they came for my mother. People from the town, Franco supporters,” narrates an old lady, the white-haired, black-dressed Maria Martín, nearly 80 years later, as she is filmed at the beginning of “The Silence of Others” laying simple flowers by the side of a country road.
Executed during Spain’s Civil War, the dead body of Martín’s mother’s was found the next day by the side of the road, and buried naked in a mass grave outside María’s village, which is now under the road. Martín’s painstaking efforts down the years to persuade authorities to exhume the 25 bodies buried in that grave have got nowhere.
Executive produced by Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar and Esther García for El Deseo, and co-written, produced and directed by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar, “The Silence of Others” examines Martín’s tragedy from both historical and deeply relatable human angles.

Written and directed by Lucrecia Martel, the Argentine auteur behind La Cineaga and The Headless Woman, Zama is the long-awaited adaptation of Antonio Di Benedetto’s classic of Latin American modernism.
Zama transports us to a remote corner of 18th-century South America where Zama, a servant of the Spanish crown, slowly loses his grip on reality. Zama brings a 21st century perspective to bear on the history of colonial catastrophe in the Americas. Marooned in an a colonial outpost, the titular Don Diego De Zama (a soulful yet funny Daniel Gimenez Cacho, Bad Education, Y Tu Mama narrator, Arrancame la vida) waits in vain for a transfer to a more prestigious post.
Martel, in a perfect coupling of literary source material and cinematic sensibility, renders Zama’s world as both absurd and mysterious as he succumbs more and more to lust, paranoia and a creeping disorientation. A fever dream, the...

Pedro Almodóvar bounces back with an absorbing saga of a mother and daughter told in an interesting style. A woman feels isolated, powerless, alone and anguished about what has happened in her life. Is any of it her fault? Or is all of it her fault? How do we hold relationships together, or do they fall apart no matter what we do? Highly rewarding dramas still exist; they don’t all go begging for Oscar nominations… just learn to read subtitles and you too can find out how the rest of the world lives.
