Arguably, British tech ensemble Bugs paved the way for the likes of Spooks, Sherlock, Torchwood and more...
It feels a long time ago that watching Saturday night TV with the family was the norm, but back in the 1990s, millions crowded around the box for the likes of Noel's House Party, Due South, The Generation Game, and of course, Bugs. The latter ran for four series between 1995 and 1999 and arguably holds the distinction of being embryonic of later, more intensive, tech-heavy UK shows including Spooks and Sherlock.

This weekend 48 years ago, the people of Britain and the rest of the world were still coming to terms with the death of JFK when the BBC One announcer introduced a new kids show about an elderly man and his mysterious granddaughter. It was called Doctor Who and was only supposed to last for a few months but 48 years later Doctor Who is still going strong. We have been lucky enough to have interviewed many of the people who helped make the show great during the past five decades and you can read those interviews by clicking on the links below. Last time British TV viewers saw Ed Stoppard, he was having to deal with a scandal involving his sister-in-law (Clare Foy) and the Nazi ambassador in Upstairs Downstairs. During the last week of August, Stoppard returns to British TV and once again he finds himself having to deal with the Nazis in the BBC2 drama The Man Who Crossed Hitler.
The drama recounts the true story of a young Jewish-German lawyer named Hans Litten who subpoenaed Hitler to appear in court during the trial of some German fascists. Despite the danger he faced, Litten was determined to expose the savagery of the Nazis thugs and he hoped that by doing so he might cause enough consternation in pre-war Germany to put an end to the rise of Hitler.

Considering that no one (except for Jack) can actually die, Torchwood: Miracle Day contains a surprising number of scenes in which people threaten each other with guns. I suppose the thought of having half your head blown off is reason enough to be afraid of a gun even if a bullet cannot actually kill you. In last night’s episode, Rex (Mekhi Phifer) and his estranged, drug smuggling Dad took it in turns to wave shotguns in each other’s faces. It therefore came as no surprise to learn that the duo have always had a strained relationship.
Gwen on the other hand has a rather closer relationship with her Dad but her much to her chagrin, her Dad was first in line to be dispatched to...

Eleventh Hour
Salford born writer Stephen Gallagher first came to prominence with the release of his novel Chimera. The book became a hit TV show and Stephen has since gone on to enjoy huge success as a TV writer on both sides of the Atlantic. In Britain, he wrote the hit drama Eleventh Hour, as well as Oktober and Life Line. He also wrote for Doctor Who and the sci-fi cult classic Bugs. An American version of Eleventh Hour was produced in 2008 and Stephen’s other Us credits include NBC’s Crusoe and ABC’s The Forgotten.
Kieran Kinsella recently caught up with Stephen and began by asking him about Chimera.

I spent several hours with Gene this morning. He wasn’t under the influence of any pain killers so he was lucid and jovial, but grew short of breath several times—and every now and again he’d grimace in pain. The attending nurse finally had no choice but to put him back on the morphine and that was it—Gene was fast asleep.
Despite his legendary optimism, Gene’s situation is tenuous. His family hopes he can undergo a procedure early this week that may alleviate his pain. Regardless, it’s unlikely that my pal will be drawing for anyone anytime soon.To continue generating what might become much-needed funds, we are selling off the last of Gene’s artwork, as well as some books and comics. Gene hopes to continue signing comics for the Cgc Signature Series. If you have comics that you would like to put through this process,...

Even if you watched it, it's unlikely you'll ever remember the 90s supernatural horror/fantasy series Chiller originally shown in 1995 on ITV; There's a good reason for that. Recognisable writers and well-respected British actors make everything look good on paper, but watching the five episodes suggests they were nothing more than early pre-fame career-building work for the majority of the cast.
Set in London and flashing back to a Ouija board séance, Prophecy is the opening story. Terminus!
Tenuous link? Maybe. But then I'd argue that those two Tom Baker stories are made up of three strong parts and a weak final one, whereas Terminus works on the reverse principle in most fans' eyes: an excellent first part goes steadily downhill into a runaround that's so dull it could be hosted by Mike Reid at the local Tory Party Conference (well, in 1983 anyway). Although "G-g-g-g-g-g-gooooo!!!" is a pretty appropriate phrase to bellow at Cameron and his cronies.
Is Terminus that bad though? It's not a Davison story that springs to mind instantly. A bit of memory...

Nothing. What’s all that about? What do we mean when we define the word Nothing? Maybe Nothing could refer to the most pointless show on TV, The One Show, an inane vacuum of dull reports and vacuous donkey-faced presenters. Or maybe it refers to the contents of my brain first thing in the morning. Or any time for that matter.
It’s also the destination of the E-Space final chapter, Warriors’ Gate, an enigmatic tale that finally frees the Doctor from the constraints of the Exo-Space continuum, and sadly bidding adieu to both Romana and K9. It’s an odd tale, which relies more on visual set-pieces rather than a straightforward, coherent story. But somehow it all comes together to form one of the best stories of the season.

Vincenzo Natali'S horror flick Splice, starring Adrien Brody as a scientist who creates a new lifeform from the DNA of several species, has been fairly well-received in the USA and is getting a UK cinema release on July 23.

Jeani Rector, editor of The Horrorzine, says, "Back in early 2009, I started noticing that a lot of ezines were going defunct. The places where people could submit fiction were becoming fewer, seemingly every day. When even The Harrow took a hiatus, I knew somebody had to fill the gap. Why not me?

Sometimes very interesting shows just don.t make it in the competitive television market. Such is the case with The 11th Hour, a program that showed much promise, but was cancelled after 18 episodes. Fans and other interested viewers now have the chance to own and view the series from start to finish. This series is based on a British miniseries of the same title, created by Stephen Gallagher and the American series is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Rufus Sewell stars as Dr. Jacob Hood, a brilliant scientist who is employed by the FBI to investigate the criminal misuse of scientific discoveries and to diffuse any crises that develop from them. The series begins with a shocking case...

Based on a BBC show written by Stephen Gallagher and starring Patrick Stewart, the American version of Eleventh Hour unfortunately only ran one season. When I reviewed the DVD release of the original I said that the new one didn't quite measure up, and I have to stick by that, but that doesn't mean that the new one isn't still miles better than a lot of other television, or that it didn't deserve to continue on. Starring Rufus Sewell, on the short list of most underrated actors, as one of the world's leading scientists who works for the government tracking down criminals who abuse science in ways few other people would understand, Eleventh Hour is an order of magnitude beyond your typical crime show. There's investigating using science, and then there's investigating using science, and this show is simply off in another world.

The American version of Eleventh Hour apparently only made it one season, though there are rumors of it getting picked up somewhere else. The Rufus Sewell led version was pretty good, and the show seemed a dream enterprise for CBS audiences, but it looks like it's done. While the show was pretty good, and Rufus Sewell really did a nice job, it didn't quite live up to the BBC original with Patrick Stewart. Stephen Gallagher seemed to understand the game a little better, the camerawork was quirky and unique, and Patrick Stewart is Patrick Stewart. For those who aren't in either loop, the show is about Dr. Ian Hood (in America it's Jacob Hood... go figure), who is a former physics professor and general genius. He works for the government now, with his special agent protector following in his wake, investigating science-related crimes.
