The double and triple-crosses pile up to preposterous heights in “Sharper,” a drama about con artists and the people they’re playing that takes the hoary adage “nothing is as it seems” to contrived extremes. A deep ensemble cast is game for this ambitiously overwrought material, but no amount of committed acting can overcome the movie’s manipulative artifice.
Things begin simply, with a title card introducing the first of the ensemble’s characters, “Tom.” Played by the likable Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Dominion”), Tom owns a small bookshop in lower Manhattan, where Sandra (Briana Middleton), a graduate college student working on her thesis, comes looking for a copy of Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”
The couple hit it off and go out on a date, which soon leads to an intimate relationship. They bond over their mutual love of Fellini and their shared fluency in Italian.

Actor Julianne Moore has built up a successful career starring in several acclaimed film roles in many movie genres.
In 2005, she decided to dabble in the genre of romantic comedy. But one of the film’s funnier scenes was inspired by a real-life incident that could’ve ended tragically.

At a Tribeca loft in New York City on Sunday evening, many of the cast members and producers of the new film “With/In” met each other for the first time. That’s because “With/In,” produced by Maven Productions’ Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray, is an anthology of short films created during the early months of the pandemic.
In 2020, as the world shut down, Styler and Rattray had an idea: They’d flip through their extensive rolodex of Hollywood names — like Julianne Moore, Elizabeth Marvel, Rosie Perez, Gina Gershon, Chris Cooper and Talia Balsam — and ship professional camera, sound and production equipment to their homes. In possession of the equipment for two days, participants could write, direct and shoot a 10-minute short film on any topic of their choosing.
“I don’t think anyone quite expected how difficult the challenge would be,” Rattray told Variety at the screening. “With/In,” which features eight of the 13 films,...

On March 16, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, along with the SAG-AFTRA Motion Picture Players’ Welfare Fund, launched a Covid-19 Relief Fund for SAG-AFTRA members. Since activating the Fund, the Foundation has already given over $5.1 million in emergency financial assistance to more than 5,484 SAG-AFTRA artists and their families with hundreds of applications still in process and thousands of performers still in need.
For over 35 years, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation has been a vital resource for SAG-AFTRA performers seeking emergency financial assistance. “The devastating effects of Covid-19 are in our own backyard, and we’re doing what we can for our colleagues and collaborators who need help,” said Hanks, a member of the foundation’s Actors’ Council who along with his wife, Rita Wilson, have played major roles in the fundraising efforts. Like Hanks, Wilson tested positive for the virus in March while he was filming Elvis, the Elvis Presley biopic, in Australia.

‘Promised.’
Most of the new releases in Australian cinemas last weekend had bombed or under-performed in the Us weeks or months ago, so their fates were probably sealed.
Splatter comedy Ready or Not, Ron Howard’s homage to the late tenor Luciano Pavarotti, English musical dramedy Blinded by the Light and indie Us drama After the Wedding were among the Halloween strugglers.
The top-grossing title at the Lavazza Italian Film Festival, writer-director Nick Conidi’s Promised opened on 45 screens via Umbrella Entertainment. The weekend take for the 1950s-set drama starring Tina Arena, Paul Mercurio, Antoniette Iesue, Daniel Berini and Mirko Grillini was a modest $57,000 but the total including festival screenings is a decent $198,000.
The top 20 titles generated $11.3 million, down 21 per cent on the prior frame according to Numero, getting some uplift from Indian imports Bigil and, to a lesser extent, Housefull 4.
Facing minimal competition, Todd Phillips’ Joker led the field for the fourth consecutive weekend,...

Exclusive: Apple’s music dramedy series Little Voice, from J.J. Abrams and the Waitress duo of Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson, has set its cast.
In the main roles are emerging actors Brittany O’Grady (Star), Shalini Bathina (Undergrad), Sean Teale (The Gifted) and Colton Ryan (Homeland). Also among cast are Samrat Chakrabarti, Gopal Divan, Sakina Jaffrey and Emma Hong.
The half-hour romantic dramedy was last year given a straight-to-series 10-episode order, which will feature original music by Grammy and Tony Award nominee Bareilles. The show is currently shooting in New York.
Described as a love letter to the diverse musicality of New York, Little Voice, which shares the title of Bareilles’ breakthrough album, will explore the journey of finding your voice in your early 20s. It is described as a fresh, intensely romantic tale of the search to find your true voice… and then the courage to use it.

By Peter BelsitoI rarely use the term masterpiece but it fits here.
A woman-centered family drama, this sensitive remake of Susanne Bier’s overcooked Danish Oscar nominee has shrewdly been flipped from a male-driven drama to an emotional showcase for the women Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore, who are both mothers of the same girl, the bride here.
The dramatic edge of the story is about a young woman who, on the day of her marriage, discovers that actually she has two mothers.
So this is a very female driven film.
The female characters are the least interesting thing in the original version of After the Wedding, an otherwise exceptional, Oscar-nominated Danish drama from Bird Box director Susanne Bier.
This sharp new English-language remake gender-flips the two lead roles to be played by women, providing an incredibly rich showcase for the immense talents of Julianne Moore (who goes big) and...

Jill Soloway is set to write and direct a film adaptation of an upcoming memoir called “Mothertrucker” at Makeready, with Julianne Moore attached to star, the studio announced Wednesday.
Written by Amy Butcher, “Mothertrucker” chronicles Butcher’s friendship with the Instagram celebrity known as Joy Mothertrucker, a 50-year-old Instagram celebrity and, according to Butcher, America’s only female ice road trucker. Moore will play Joy Mothertrucker; the studio is developing the role of Amy as a starring vehicle for another leading actress.
The book is set to be published by Little A, an imprint of Amazon Publishing, in early 2022.
Soloway is writing and directing the film and will also produce alongside Andrea Sperling through their Topple Productions. Moore will produce, with Bart Freundlich executive producing through their fortysixty productions. Makeready...

Jill Soloway will direct and adapt the upcoming memoir “Mothertrucker” for Makeready. The film unites the “Transparent” creator with Julianne Moore, who will take the showy starring role.

After The Wedding cleverly switches the genders on the Oscar-nominated Danish film of the same name, transforming it into a terrific showcase for two powerhouse actresses, Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams.
Director Bart Freundlich decided to flip the genders in his remake of Susan Bier’s 2006 Oscar-nominated Danish film, which turns out to be a brilliant choice, thanks to the wonderful casting of Williams and Moore. . Often remakes of European hit films for American audiences fall far short of the original but Freundlich’s enjoyable, thoughtful drama is the exception, and may actually be an improvement.
The characters that Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore could not be more different. Williams plays Isabel, an American idealist who runs an orphanage in India. The orphanage is in shaky financial shape so when...

For a change, a narrative feature rather than a documentary opened best among this week’s new releases. “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” about a challenged young man and his dreams of wrestling glory, opened to multiple cities to very encouraging initial results and a real shot of crossover success.
The tough-minded “One Child Nation” also had a promising start at two theaters, one on each coast. Breakout success “The Farewell” grossed over $2 million with its expansion to 700 theaters, but that’s less than it made last weekend. Still, this very successful film already has passed $10 million.
Opening
The Peanut Butter Falcon (Roadside Attractions) – Metacritic: 69; Festivals include: SXSW 2019
$205,236 in 17 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $12,108
A creative and atypical release pattern paid off for Roadside Attractions with the initial seven-city release, with five heartland markets joining New York and Los Angeles. A reported special Cinemascore survey with an A+ grade suggests...
