"I really tried to push good music, good new music." Levefilm in Canada has revealed an official trailer for a Toronto documentary titled Drop the Needle, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Rob Freeman. It is premiering at the Hot Docs Film Festival this fall, hence the trailer out not to build some pre-fest buzz. Drop the Needle tells the story of the Toronto-based record store, Play De Record (see Google Maps), and how it became a hub for underground music lovers across Canada. In August 1990, Eugene Tam opened a small family-run record store on Yonge Street - it quickly became a magnet for college radio and club DJs. Known as an essential hub for up-and-coming dance, hip-hop and Edm, and a vital part of Toronto's underground music ecosystem. And it's still around today!! Visit whenever you're up in Toronto. This looks dope!! A trip back in time to the...

Recently arriving on Blu-ray and DVD in the Us and coming soon to UK TV is The Dead 2, Howard and Jonathan Ford’s follow up to the 2010 African zombie movie. Now shifting focus to a new set of characters in India, the new location provided its own set of rewards and challenges, which The Ford Brothers spoke about during a recent interview:
How do you two write? For example, does one pace the floor whilst the other types?
Jon: Ha, that’s funny! You hit the nail on the head! Normally you will find Howard frantically writing away while I pace the room acting out the scenarios and shouting the lines like some demented theatre actor on steroids. The writing stage is one phase of the project where we work together very well. We are almost never in conflict with each other, each jumping in where the other got to...

Rob Freeman and Cody Hackman are the producers of the upcoming Mma-themed film Tapped, and apparently they were so impressed after working with genre legend Michael Biehn (who wouldn't be?) that they have joined his newest project, Treachery.
From the Press Release
Tapped producers Rob Freeman and Cody Hackman got on so well with Michael Biehn when he starred for them in their Mma feature that filmed in London, Ontario, in the fall of 2012 that when they discovered he owned BlancBiehn Productions with partner and lifemate Jennifer Blanc Biehn, they ran out and viewed their production The Victim. The duo were so inspired they decided to continue the working relationship. Therefore, BlancBiehn Productions is proud to announce that the Tapped producers have joined in for post-production on Treachery, and the companies are in talks for future projects.

.Let us not blaspheme.. The Ford brothers may have pissed off some local witch doctor since their production has the definite feeling of being under a curse when you hear about all they had to go through. Bad shoot must equal good movie since the end product is pretty good. The dead are rising and roaming the Earth. Americans are trying to get out of Africa as the slow moving dead are ravaging the countryside and killing to swell their ranks. Lt. Brian Murphy (Rob Freeman) is on the last plane out of the area but it crashes into the ocean and he barely makes it ashore. Meanwhile, Sgt. In our recent review of The Dead, we mentioned the fact that the Ford brothers had a difficult time shooting in Africa. On top of having to worry about heat, illness, and bugs, there were also problems with the locals that resulted in threats, muggings, and filming delays.
Director Howard Ford wrote a book about their filming experience, titled Surviving the Dead, which will be released next month:
“Director/producer Howard J. Ford of hit zombie film The Dead has written an uncompromising and disastrously toe-curling behind-the-scenes, blow-by-blow account of the making of the feature film that has become the global zombie movie of the year.
Surviving The Dead – illustrated with never-before-seen stills from the shoot – takes us from England to Africa on a harrowing journey as the Ford brothers try to hold together a film shoot with more horror than any fictional plot could possibly contain. For anyone interested...

In the age of sprinting zombies and sparkling sun-proof vampires, it’s a risky move to go back to the basics when human fatigue and the element of surprise were the only advantages the undead had over their prey. That’s the only grace The Dead affords its stumbling predators, but apparently that was enough to set up a story where Africa has been overrun and two men must band together to survive their trek across the lonely wilderness with nothing but a truck, a machete, and guns to get them home. The acting of Rob Freeman and Prince David Oseia and writing of the Ford brothers aren’t top-notch, but The Dead makes excellent use of silence and isolation, contending that the zombies aren’t the biggest risk: mental fatigue is. Co-directors and writers Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford play their zombie flick straight and without much flash or melodrama,...

Set against the backdrop of Africa, the film stars Rob Freeman as Brian Murphy who joins forces with Daniel Dambele (Prince David Osei) to cross the vast South African desert by any means necessary to find a means to get out of the country and locate Dambele's son.
A daunting task under normal circumstances becomes particularly challenging after the zombie apocalypse.

In the Ford Brothers' zombie opus The Dead, actor Rob Freeman portrays Lieutenant Brian Murphy, an American caught in Africa during a zombie uprising, and we recently caught up with the actor for a brief chat about the film.
In The Dead Freeman's character survives a harrowing plane crash in western Africa only to come to realize he's got bigger issues than his plane going down: He's surrounding by hordes of flesh-hungry zombies who threaten the American engineer along every step of his dangerous journey out of the desolate and ravaged world he's been left behind in.
With the film's DVD and Blu-ray release occurring this Valentine's Day courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment, we asked Freeman about the real-life dangers he and the entire cast and crew faced while shooting the zombie film in Burkina Faso and Ghana and how even a brush with death couldn't keep him from working...

Rob Freeman earns his title of “journeyman-actor.” Freeman and the cast and crew of “The Dead” spent their time filming the movie in Burkina Faso and Ghana, where the cast and crew came up on harsh conditions. “We lived that film for three months,” he said. “We were in an area where bribery and corruption are rampant–there, they call it survival. We had to bribe people [and] officials to get across the borders, our vehicles were held for ransom, Ak-47s were pointed at us,” he said. The inhospitable conditions helped give a realistic, disturbing affect on the film, which Freeman calls a “road movie…in the genre of a horror film.”...

Ever since the Dawn of the Dead remake exploded a few years back there has been an even greater explosion of zombie movies. There have been many shoddy, even offensive in their lack of quality, releases popping up all over the place. On the flipside though there have been some quality releases that have kept the Undead flag flying high and proud. One such film that aims to join the list of quality releases is the upcoming release of The Dead from Anchor Bay. It will be released on both DVD and Blu-ray on February 14th. Directed by The Ford Brothers under intense conditions in Africa, it looks set to put a new perspective on the Zombie movie. Let’s face it, it’ll make a wonderful gift for Valentine’s Day! Cast your eyes down for more details on the release.

More than halfway through October now, and it's high time for a followup to the first "Scary Monsters" roundup of the year, the one that pointed to several ongoing month-long cinephilic celebrations of Halloween. Before taking a look at a few recent and upcoming releases, let's begin with a list, namely, Glenn Kenny's at MSN Movies, the "50 Scariest Movies of All Time." At Some Came Running, Glenn kicks himself for forgetting to include Erle C Kenton's Island of Lost Souls (1932) with Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi: "In my defense, I've long held that it's not a real 'greatest' list unless it complains at least one completely bone-headed and inexcusable omission, and the omission of Souls, I would say, constitutes a particularly distinguished instance of such." Update: At Criterion's Current, Susan Arosteguy lists "10 Things I Learned" about Souls — factoids, some odd, some nifty, some a little spooky. Update, 10/21:...

Title: The Dead Director: Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford Cast: Rob Freeman, Prince David Osei and David Dontoh There’s not much ground covered in most zombie movies. Some of them tackle social issues, others take on notions of conformity, while others are just happy enough with blood and gore. In the new film from The Ford Brothers (Howard J and Jonathan), “The Dead” takes an interesting approach to zombie movies, in terms of setting. It’s a zombie movie set in the deserts of Africa. And what is displayed on the screen, will surely shock, horrify and excite most horror fans. The film starts with a lone man, wondering the...

I’m not a big fan of zombie films, for very much the same reason I don’t really have time for stalk and slash films … Because they’re all the same! I’ve seen Psycho (1960), Halloween (1978) and Scream (1996), that’s all I need. Similarly, with zombies, I’ve seen all the George Romero films and find no one else’s take on his zombie idea really adds anything. We all die. The end. Seen it; next please.
But, every now and then, someone comes along with a different take on the same old motifs. Shaun of the Dead (2004), very obviously, added lovable characters, an English setting and a sense of hope that the American zombie films lack. Has The Dead, written, produced, shot and directed by English brothers Jon and Howard Ford – available now on Blu-Ray and DVD – similarly re-defined the genre?
Well, things start off promisingly enough – the setting is Africa.

Directors/writers: Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford.
The Dead is a zombie thriller filmed in Burkina, Faso from brothers Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford. Released in the United Kingdom in September and to show in America October 7th, The Dead is a self-described "zombie road trip" movie. So, there is plenty of time spent in a broken down pickup as charcters Lt. Brian Murphy (Rob Freeman) and Stg Daniel Dembele (Prince David Oseia) cross the African continent in search of safety. The great cinematography made this reviewer wonder if this is the first African shot zombie film. No others come to mind and The Dead is unique in landscape, but not in methodology. The shamblers propel the story forward like George A. Romero's undead in Night of the Living Dead, while the film keeps the tension up by offering death on every corner.
Murphy and Dembele meet up in an arid desert.

Co-scripted and directed by the British brothers Howard and Jon Ford (the former producing, the latter acting as cinematographer), this relatively orthodox horror flick is given a singular baleful vitality by being filmed in disturbed war-torn west Africa. The American actor Rob Freeman (who had a small role as the eponymous soldier's son in the present-day sequence of Saving Private Ryan) plays a Us engineer stranded in Africa, the only survivor of an offshore plane crash, who is attempting to make his way to safety through a ravaged world populated by slow-moving, flesh-eating zombies. He finds a clapped-out pick-up truck and is joined on his quest by a deeply religious local army sergeant who has quit his regiment to search for his little son, the sole survivor of their village. The landscape is awesomely bleak, the atmosphere apocalyptic, and the film's rough edges contribute to the film's disconcerting rawness. From what one hears,...

Kill List (18)
(Ben Wheatley, 2011, UK) Neil Maskell, MyAnna Buring, Michael Smiley, Emma Fryer. 95 mins
Who knew there was a missing link between Mike Leigh, Andy McNab and The Wicker Man? That's how unpredictable this macabre and outlandish tale is, but it unfolds in a credible modern-day Britain scarred by foreign wars and domestic recession. Circumstances lead a blokey hitman and his partner to accept a dodgy new assignment – and by the time they start asking questions, it's too late.
Attenberg (18)
(Athina Rachel Tsangari, 2010, Gre) Ariane Labed, Vangelis Mourikis, Evangelina Randou. 97 mins
Fans of Dogtooth will be ready for another prime dose of Greek oddness. Beneath the animal impersonations, silly walks and bad sex lies an intelligent, intimate study of human behaviour.
Fright Night (15)
(Craig Gillespie, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant. 106 mins
A teen vampire horror remake that benefits from superior effects, a shrewd Las Vegas setting, and some lively comedy.

We teased earlier that Howard J. Ford's The Dead was close to finding U.S. distribution. This weekend, Shock has learned that the zombie film - which has revolved on the film festival circuit - has been acquired by Anchor Bay/Starz. A DVD debut is expected later this year. Rob Freeman stars as Brian Murphy, a man whose plane crashes in the South African bush. He joins forces with Daniel Dambele to cross the vast desert by any means necessary. A daunting task under normal circumstances becomes particularly challenging after the zombie apocalypse.

Jonathan and Howard Ford's The Dead is getting some great reviews, which we're sharing because since we saw the first trailer for the movie, we've been intrigued by how good it looks. The movie recently screened at the 2010 Fantastic Fest and here are a few reviews.
"...a very fine zombie flick that borrows a little bit here and there, but also marks some new ground of its own." - FEARnet
"...a genuinely distinctive addition to the zombie canon." - Quiet Earth
"The Dead could easily be the best-looking film ever made about the cannibalistic hordes." - Film Shaft
"The last decade has seen more than its share of zombie movies, and most of them weren't worth the celluloid they were printed on. Mercifully, The Dead is actually pretty good..." - Styd
