Before embarking on a career in politics which led to him becoming a two-term Democratic senator for Minnesota, Al Franken was best-known for his two separate stints as a Saturday Night Live writer and cast member – 1975 to 1980 and again from 1985 to 1995.
Franken resigned from the Senate back in 2018 amid allegations of sexual misconduct, and now has a podcast, aptly named the Al Franken Podcast. He also recently kicked off a standup tour, An Evening of New Stand-up With Al Franken, which is making stops at City Winery locations across the country through the summer.
Franken spoke with Forbes about his new tour and addressed the current state of SNL’s Weekend Update segment, with which Franken was closely associated during his many years on the show.
The segment became increasingly political while Franken worked on it, something which continues to this day.

J.K. Simmons has joined the cast of Jason Reitman’s SNL 1975, and not only will the Oscar winner be playing Hollywood legend Milton Berle, but he’ll have the notable distinction of becoming the first actual SNL host to join the cast of the Sony movie.
Simmons hosted the Jan. 31, 2015 episode of Saturday Night Live, which featured D’Angelo as the musical guest. At the time, Simmons was riding high off an Oscar nomination for Whiplash, and he would go on to win the Academy Award following his SNL hosting stint.
Meanwhile, Berle hosted SNL on April 14, 1979, and Ornette Coleman was his musical guest. It’s unclear where Berle fits into Reitman’s movie at this moment in time.
SNL 1975 is a behind-the-scenes account of the very first episode of Saturday Night Live. The film will reportedly unfold in real-time.

For the first half of this weekend's new episode of "Saturday Night Live," hosted by "No Country for Old Men" and "Dune" star Josh Brolin, I couldn't stop trying to pinpoint what other performer he was reminding me of, even across a few different sketches. At first, I thought it might have been former "SNL" cast member Al Franken, specifically because of the slightly effeminate way he was portraying a couple of characters. Then it hit me: Josh Brolin rich, deep voice and his slightly off-kilter delivery style felt like the offspring of John Malkovich. Because whenever the frequently villainous John Malkovich is speaking, he's pretty much always talking like John Malkovich. There might be a slight accent every now and then, but it's pretty much always Malkovich being Malkovich. And the same can be said for Josh Brolin.
The good news is that this trait mostly works in Brolin...

The 2007 John C. Reilly comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has become a cult hit in recent years, largely as a result of the skill with which it dissects and eviscerates the genre it satirizes.
The film so deftly laid bare the tropes and cliches of the rock star biopic that many predicted it would forever change the way filmmakers approached stories about dead celebs.
And for a while, it seemed like the trick had worked.
Leaving aside for a moment any discussion about the quality of these films, there's no denying that Elvis, Blonde, Maestro, Jackie, Priscilla, and Oppenheimer all offered new takes on a very familiar subgenre.
(That last one, admittedly, is a bit of an outlier, as we're not sure if a theoretical physicist -- even one who altered the course of world history -- can properly be called a celebrity.)

Giancarlo Esposito is taking over the male lead in Netflix’s Shondaland drama The Residence following the passing of Andre Braugher.
Braugher, who died Dec. 11 following a battle with lung cancer, was tapped last February to be the male lead on Netflix’s Shonda Rhimes drama The Residence, starring opposite Uzo Aduba. The White House murder-mystery started production before shutting down amid Hollywood’s dual strikes. Braugher had already completed filming a lot of his scenes on the series, which was scheduled to resume filming last month January. Esposito’s casting means the scenes Braugher had filmed will be reshot on the drama from showrunner Paul William Davies (Scandal), which has continued production amid the recasting.
Here’s the official logline for The Residence, per Netflix: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs...

Jon Stewart is returning as the host and executive producer of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.” Before you get too excited, the assignment is part-time, and the plan is for him to stay on as host through the November 2024 presidential election cycle, and EP at least through 2025.
Stewart will host the program only on Mondays, but executive produce every episode. The other evenings will be hosted by a rotating panel of the show’s “All-Star Correspondents.” If you’re wondering why Stewart is taking the Monday slot, it’s because that’s traditionally the most-watched “Daily Show” episode of the week, and acts as catch up for all the news that’s gone on over the weekend.
Although “The Daily Show” began in 1996 with Craig Kilborn as its host, the show rose in the public consciousness during Stewart’s time hosting from 1999 to 2015. Under Kilborn, the show was mostly irreverent and focused on pop culture.

Comedy Central is set to share a long-awaited update on the next chapter for “The Daily Show” next week.
The announcement, which follows the late night program winning a Primetime Emmy Award on Monday for Outstanding Talk Series, comes as the network has been searching for a permanent replacement for Trevor Noah for over a year. Noah, who took over hosting duties from Jon Stewart in 2015, exited the show in December 2022.
During the Emmys, former “Daily Show” correspondent Roy Wood Jr. could be seen mouthing “Please hire a host” during Noah’s acceptance speech. Wood himself retweeted the clip, with the caption, “Chill, fam I was trying to do that in the low.”

Exclusive: The Daily Show was a surprise winner at the Emmys on Monday night.
The Comedy Central series won the award for Outstanding Talk Series for Trevor Noah’s final season, an emotional end to his seven-year run. Many expected Stephen Colbert to win for The Late Show or Jimmy Kimmel Live! but it was Noah that picked up the award, becoming the first Black man to lead a show to victory in the category.
Afterwards, a number of questions were directed towards Noah and the team about the future of The Daily Show, a fair ask given that it has now been over a year since Noah left the show.
Deadline understands that over the next few months, the focus will be on its correspondents to lead the show through this election year, rather than another phalanx of celebrity guest hosts.

Chris McCarthy has a big decision to make.
Nearly twelve months on to the day that Trevor Noah said goodbye to The Daily Show, the Comedy Central series still does not have a permanent host.
But a decision is expected soon with sources telling Deadline that Paramount is facing pressure to name a new host by the end of the year.
There have been a number of shortlists and stars mentioned throughout the process, which was hampered by the writers and actors strike, and obviously there was the Hasan Minhaj situation, where the Patriot Act star basically had the job before that New Yorker article came out.
But many in the late-night and comedy community believe that McCarthy and his team already have viable options right under their noses and with it the opportunity to shake-up the talk show landscape with a fresh take and in the process bolster diversity...

The word is all over town. After leading SAG-AFTRA to an historic new deal with the Hollywood studios, Fran Drescher has leverage, rediscovered fame and momentum.
Could she use all that to transition into a political career?
“This has been a great launching pad for her. So it wouldn’t be unusual for her to try to make that leap,” said Jorge Flores, a Los Angeles-based political consultant who has run campaigns for Congress and state offices.
“Certainly she has raised her profile significantly, and has developed a base with certain constituencies across labor,” he noted. “I could see her potentially running for Congress on the sort of issues that she’s been dealing with in SAG-AFTRA. Macro issues as far as cost of living, equity issues, is where I think her platform would be aligned with a member of Congress.”

Bob Odenkirk knows he should probably leave his kids alone. But the Better Call Saul star spent the pandemic working on an Audible murder comedy podcast with his son, Nate, 23, and collaborating on a children’s book with his artist daughter, Erin, 22. “If I want to do a good job as a dad, I know I have to let them be,” he says. “But that’s not easy because they’re very fun people and their ideas are so exciting.”
Zilot & Other Important Rhymes (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers) combines illustrations by Erin (the recent Pratt Institute grad calls her dad Bob) with poems written by the kids when they were young, with an update by the Odenkirk family (including Odenkirk’s wife, Naomi); it hits bookstores Oct. 10. Comedy Central is going back to square one in its efforts to find a new host for “The Daily Show.”
The Paramount Global cable network is considering a wider array of candidates to take the reins of the program from previous emcee Trevor Noah, according to people familiar with the matter, after having previously identified Hasan Minhaj as a leading possibility. Comedian Hasan Minhaj is emerging as a leading candidate for the prestigious host role at Comedy Central’s acclaimed “Daily Show”.
According to Variety, the ongoing search for a successor to Trevor Noah has been an intense bake-off among top comedians, and Minhaj’s name has risen to the forefront.

Minhaj, not new to “Daily Show”, was part of the show’s team of faux “correspondents” between 2014 and 2018. He then went on to helm his weekly program, “Patriot Act”, on Netflix, showcasing his wit and insightful commentary on current affairs.
As SAG-AFTRA’s 160,000 members were ordered to halt all work under the TV/Theatrical Contracts, the entertainment industry was hit with a production standstill. As a result, Hollywood’s major movie and television projects are on hold, leaving eager audiences eagerly awaiting their favourite shows’ return.

Comedian Hasan Minhaj has been eyed as a leading candidate for the open host role at Comedy Central’s “Daily Show,” according to three people familiar with the matter, suggesting that a months-long bake-off for the job among a phalanx of top comics is reaching its final stages.
Minhaj is not guaranteed to win the position, these people caution, and a deal is not believed to have been finalized. Still, his name has emerged as a likely successor to Trevor Noah, who left the job in a surprise maneuver late last year.

The doctor is in … the Michigan Senate race. Actor Hill Harper is setting his sights on politics.
The Good Doctor star on Monday announced he is running for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, challenging U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin for the Democratic nomination.
In an interview with the Associated Press ahead of the announcement, the actor, who owns a home and a coffee shop in Detroit, described himself as a small-business owner, union member and activist and explained how not being a “career politician” would give him an advantage in Congress. “It’s not about party. It’s about people feeling represented,” Harper said. “And being an independent voice in the U.S. Senate is something I believe Michiganders want right now.”
Harper has had a 30-year career in television, co-starring in series such as City of Angels, CSI: NY, Covert Affairs, Limitless and Homeland. He has played Dr.

Despite his ongoing legal troubles and indictments, Donald Trump swears that he is “a legitimate person.” But the hosts of “Morning Joe” are pretty sure that’s more of a self-affirmation for him at this point, similar to one of Al Franken’s “Saturday Night Live” characters: Stuart Smalley.
Trump’s words came on Tuesday, in yet another interview where he attempted to defend leaked audio of him seemingly confessing to being in possession of classified documents. When asked by a reporter if there are any more tapes that people should be “concerned” about surfacing, Trump steadfastly claimed no, “because I don’t do things wrong, I do things right. I’m a legitimate person.”
After laughing at the “absurdity” of Trump’s ever-changing defenses of this tape, “Morning Joe” panelist Willie Geist immediately drew a connection between Trump and Al Franken’s character.

John Leguizamo, Busy Philipps, Tony Kushner, Neil Gaiman, Al Franken and Wanda Sykes were among those who took to the stage during WGA East’s Rally at 30 Rockefeller Center on Tuesday, appearing alongside union leaders from SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, Actor’s Equity and more pledging that “all of labor stands behind the writers.”
Cynthia Nixon, Ilana Glazer, Warren Leight and labor leaders Rebecca Damon from SAG-AFTRA, Kate Shindle of Actors Equity and Matt Loeb of IATSE were also among those who spoke, with Mark Ruffalo and Susan Sarandon making crowd appearances.
Both of those actors’ messages of solidarity were more prominently shared on social media as Ruffalo encouraged SAG members to vote yes on the strike authorization and stand in solidarity with the WGA if they are concerned about “AI protections, and the future of television and entertainment.” Sarandon, meanwhile, tweeted, “NYC is a Union town. Stronger Together!!!” alongside of video of the rally.

As the WGA strike entered its fourth week, Tony Kushner swore, Steve Earle sang, Wanda Sykes led union chants and Busy Philipps told CEO jokes for more than 1,000 demonstrators and hundreds of onlookers who filled the street in front of NBCUniversal headquarters Tuesday in Midtown Manhattan.
With a starry speakers list, celebrities dotting the crowd and turnout from several local labor unions, a “Rally at the Rock” outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza in support of striking movie and television writers filled one barricaded side of West 49th Street between 5th and 6th avenues — the equivalent of three city blocks — with cheering, sign-waving protestors who stayed for more than two hours. It was the largest turnout for any event organized by members of the Writers Guild of America East since the strike against film and television producers began May 2, a WGA representative told Deadline.

X2: X-Men United Adapted The God Loves, Man Kills Marvel Comic Arc, But It's Missing One Key Element
"X2: X-Men United" was released 20 years ago, and it remains easily the best of the original "X-Men" trilogy and one of the first hints that superhero movies were a Hollywood heavyweight. Even so, "X2" isn't free of the sin that many adaptations commit. Namely, not honoring the source material's spirit.
The most influential "X-Men" writer is Chris Claremont. He wrote the series from 1975 to 1991, rescuing the comic from obscurity in the process. He also gave the setting the political backbone for which it's now known. Stan Lee retroactively claimed he based Professor X and Magneto on Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, but read his "X-Men" stories and you won't find credence for that or much of a bite at all. Lee was, in the words of "Marvel Comics: The Untold Story" author Sean Howe, "a master fence-sitter."
Claremont, though, had a firmer spine. Magneto being a Holocaust survivor?...

Toronto’s favorite son turns his eye toward New York, and back to 1975 for his next project. Jason Reitman is currently producing the next “Ghostbusters” picture with director and co-writer Gil Kenan and leads Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, but he’s got his next project lined up at Sony Pictures.
As per Deadline, the “Juno” and “Up in the Air” director will be back behind the camera for an untitled “Saturday Night Live” opening night project. Kenan will co-write the script.
Casting has not been announced, but somebody out there is (probably) going to be playing producer Lorne Michaels and first-episode cast members like Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, and Garrett Morris. Also, potentially, writers like Michael O’Donoghue, Al Franken, Anne Beatts, Alan Zweibel, and others. The first guest on “SNL” was George Carlin so maybe someone will be doing an impression of the comedian during his “Toledo Window Box” era,...

As the news that both Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon were out at their respective networks hit the front pages this morning, a slew of boldfaced names began to react, chiefly to Carlson’s departure.

Since Trevor Noah left “The Daily Show” in December, the late-night Comedy Central program has been cycling through various guest hosts, a bold move that has been paying off in the show’s ratings.

Okay, I admittedly came in hot by calling the folks at Comedy Central "cowards" in that headline, because that's probably not the correct word to use to describe a channel that has been letting Trey Parker and Matt Stone run wild for over 25 years. When it was announced last fall that Trevor Noah would be leaving "The Daily Show" after seven fantastic years, fans immediately started fantasy booking his successor. There was a big push for Samantha Bee, of the recently canceled "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" to become the show's first full-time female host, with others hoping the job went to one of Noah's roll of correspondents. Comedy Central instead announced that they would showcase a weekly rotation of guest hosts, with some of comedy's smartest minds sitting behind "The Daily Show" desk.

Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi to offer some advice to guest host Roy Wood Jr.
Tuesday (4 April) night’s episode of the satirical news show saw Wood discussing the day’s biggest stories, including Donald Trump’s historic arrest.
Comedian Wood then discussed the struggles of being a Daily Show guest presenter, saying: “You’ve got to be funny, you’ve got to be satirical, you’ve got to be powerful, you’ve got to go viral. I don’t know what to do. I just wish I had somebody that I could talk to to guide me.”
“Roy. Use the force, Roy,” a voice called out, with Woods replying: “Who that? I don’t f*** with ghosts.”
Stewart – who hosted the show from 1999 to 2015 – then appeared dressed as the Star Wars character, gaining loud cheers from the audience.

Al Franken spent nine years as a U.S. Senator from Minnesota, and it all finally paid off in recent weeks when he logged a stint as a guest host on “The Daily Show.”
Franken turned in some robust impressions of Charles Schumer, Mitch McConnell and Susan Collins during one sketch on the Comedy Central program that suggested he was taking some pretty interesting notes when he served in that chamber. “I didn’t give them a heads up,” Franken says in a recent interview, after his run. “I served wth those people. Some I could do. I’m not one othose impressionists who can do everyone. I do who I can do.”
While Franken is one of a number of noted hosts who have helped the show keep spinning after the depature last year of Trevor Noah, you might say he has been training for such an appearance for much of his professional life.

“Let’s not f–k it up,” she quipped.
Leguizamo, most recently seen in hit feature films like “The Menu” and “Encanto” and next in “The Power” on Amazon’s Prime Video, began the interview by applauding the fact that “The Daily Show” was spotlighting a “Latina guest and a Latino host” side by side. He assured audiences, however, that they’re still watching “The Daily Show,” not Univision.
“Part of me wants you not to emphasize it because I’m afraid immigration might show up at any moment,” Navarro chimed in, jokingly. “And then again, and then I remember Donald Trump is no longer president. We ain’t getting deported!”

Showing off your late-night hosting skills when you have just four days to do so can be daunting. So Kal Penn brought his ‘A’ game.
The actor used his unique connections to the White House — he was an associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs during the Obama administration — to deliver a hard-to-get booking to Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” When Penn recently guest-hosted the program, his first night featured a sit-down with President Joe Biden.
How did he land Potus? Penn simply asked — but made clear he planned to ask questions the Commander-in-Chief doesn’t usually get during a media scrum. “I definitely wanted him to join me in setting up what I hope was a hopeful arc over the week,” says Penn, who asked Biden to discuss how young people’s advocacy can spur change on climate, drilling, and human rights.

Exclusive: The Daily Show has been ticking along nicely with its phalanx of guest hosts including Chelsea Handler, Leslie Jones and Kal Penn.
The producers of the Comedy Central series are currently weighing up how they replace Trevor Noah in the hot seat come the fall, and one suggestion has been to continue the revolving roster of guest hosts on a permanent basis.
The ratings certainly suggest it’s working.
Comparing the first quarter of 2023 – Leslie Jones kicked off the new format January 17 – with the first quarter of 2022 when Noah was host, Deadline understands that linear ratings are up 13%. On the social side, views are up 16% in this period compared with last year.
Much of this has been done without much marketing; Deadline understands a push is being saved for when the new plan is in place later in the year.
It would certainly make for a fresh take if...

Al Franken ended his week hosting “The Daily Show” with a bang on Thursday night — or rather, with a chant. The former senator led the audience in chanting “USA” after joking TikTok should be banned in the country, because only American companies should be able to steal user data and spy on them.
Franken’s comments, of course, came in light of the congressional hearing held on Thursday, in which TikTok’s CEO was grilled about safety concerns. The hearing marked a rare show of bipartisanship, as both Democrats and Republicans worried about the safety of U.S. users.
During the hearing, Republican Cathy McMorris Rogers, the Chair of Energy and Commerce, argued, “We do not trust TikTok will ever embrace American values,” and that the platform should be banned as a result.

With an indictment possibly looming for Trump’s alleged hush money payment to Stormy Daniels, another one of the investigations into the twice-impeached former president appears to have taken a turn he might not like. And at this point, Al Franken feels for Trump’s lawyers — especially considering the fact that this development indicates Trump lied to them.
According to ABC News, the investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents — one of at least five investigations into the man — has recently started leading to the conclusion that Trump “knowingly misled his attorneys so that they would file a sworn statement last June that he knew was false.”
“Can you imagine being a lawyer for Donald Trump, and finding out he set you up?” Franken joked on “The Daily Show” on Wednesday night. “That would make you question whether it was even worth buying a degree from Barbados in the first place.

As twice-impeached former president Donald Trump faces a possible indictment for alleged hush money paid to Stormy Daniels, “The Daily Show” guest host Al Franken joked on Monday that really, the whole situation is just “another failed Trump business venture.”
In case you’ve somehow missed it, here’s the short version: In 2016, Stormy Daniels received $130,000 from former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen. Cohen has testified in court that that money was given to the adult film star to cover up an affair she had with Trump, at the instruction of Trump himself. Cohen maintains that Trump then reimbursed him while in office.
Now, a Manhattan D.A. could be indicting Trump for a campaign finance violation and, if convicted, Trump could indeed face jail time.

The cast of "Saturday Night Live" might be full of comedians with an improv background, but if there's one thing showrunner Lorne Michaels doesn't like it's... well, improv. If you've ever been lucky enough to visit studio 8H and see how things work behind-the-scenes, it's not all joking around. In fact, it's quite intense, with the production crew racing around on-stage between sketches to prep the next setup. All of which is overseen by Michaels who has been running the show since 1975 (except for a brief hiatus in the early '80s).
And over his time shepherding NBC's legendary sketch show, Michaels has learned that any attempt to go off-script could throw his finely tuned machine into chaos. In fact, if a performer dares to indulge their improv sensibilities, it could well spell the end of their "SNL" career, such as when Damon Wayans decided to play a straight-man...

Garrett Morris was a man amongst brats during the first five seasons of "Saturday Night Live." The Juilliard-trained actor was 10 years older than his Baby Boomer costars, and came from the theater instead of comedy. Though he'd written plays, he had virtually no experience penning sketches, which placed him at an immediate disadvantage; ergo, as the series' inaugural season got underway, he struggled to find screen time.
One of the biggest issues was cultural. Morris was the only Black member of the cast. He couldn't relate to his colleagues' life experiences and vice versa. But there was another significant factor: these guys could be real jerks. This was partially a toxic outgrowth of the hyper-competitive atmosphere encouraged by producer Lorne Michaels. The superstar trio of John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and Bill Murray were known behind the scenes as "the Bully Boys." They could generate their own material, and were so explosively funny that the writers,...
