Frustrations in some quarters over the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ plan to present Oscars to eight predominantly craft categories before Sunday’s ABC telecast and then weave edited versions of those winners into the live show may lead to acts of protest that go up all the way to the podium at the Dolby Theatre.
Cinema Audio Society president Karol Urban confirmed Thursday that a plan was in the works for attendees to wear their guild badges upside down during Sunday’s ceremony, and for winners to flip their Oscars when they accept them.
“There is a multitude of different organizations that are working together to find ways to circumvent having their voices clipped,” said Urban, who leads the group that represents sound mixers. “As the Oscars get closer, more and more craft people are showing solidarity. Iaste president Matthew Loeb pushed back today against the plan to pre-tape several categories in an attempt to tighten up Sunday’s Oscarcast, saying, “We believe a deviation for some crafts and categories but not others is detrimental.”
“By the nature of our jobs, behind-the-scenes workers get little recognition as is, despite being the backbone of every production,” Loeb said in a statement. “The Academy Awards has been virtually the only venue where the very best on and off the big screen, above and below the line, gather to honor each other’s incredible contributions through their crafts, inspiring millions who tune into the TV broadcast in the process. We believe a deviation for some crafts and categories but not others is detrimental to this fundamental purpose.”
The Academy announced a month ago that eight Oscar categories will be taped in the audience during the hour before the telecast and edited into the show later.

As we get closer to the 94th Oscars, the din of displeasure concerning changes to its broadcast strategy is not going away. As previously reported, the winners in eight categories will not be revealed during the televised portion, but rather in the hour preceding the ceremony when the biggest stars are making their way past interviewers on the red carpet. These acceptances will be quickly edited into the final show, though without the element of tension before the reveal (and perhaps in truncated form).

Hollywood’s biggest night will apparently be without one of its brightest category stars.
Tom Fleischman, a longtime rerecording mixer who has frequently worked with director Martin Scorsese, has reportedly resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) over its plan to avoid fully televising eight categories at this year’s Academy Awards presentations. The Oscar curtailed television plans have been severely criticized by members and the associated guilds.
AMPAS has said it will present its awards for documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and sound before this year’s broadcast. The awards presentation for those categories will have clips inserted nto the subsequent live telecast.
Fleischman won an Oscar for Scorsese’s Hugo and was also nominated for Jonathan Demme’s Silence of the Lambs, Warren Beatty’s Reds and Scorsese’s The Aviator and Gangs of New York.

Oscar-winning sound mixer Tom Fleischman has resigned from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the Academy’s decision to cut eight categories from the live portion of this year’s Oscars broadcast.
Fleischman is a longtime collaborator of Martin Scorsese and won a Best Achievement in Sound Mixing Oscar for “Hugo.” Fleischman was also nominated for an Oscar four other times for “Silence of the Lambs,” “Reds” and Scorsese’s “The Aviator” and “Gangs of New York.”
The affected categories, just for reference, are: Documentary (Short Subject), Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Production Design, Short Film (Animated), Short Film (Live Action), and Fleischman’s category, Sound. They’ll be presented in a more sparsely attended ceremony just before the broadcast, with shortened, edited footage edited into the live broadcast in some way.

As expected, James Mangold’s ’60s racing epic “Ford v Ferrari,” animated feature “Toy Story 4,” and documentary “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound” took top honors at the 56th Cinema Audio Society Awards recognizing outstanding sound mixing.
As an Oscar bellwether, though, six of the past 10 Cas winners have gone on to win the sound mixing Oscar, which bodes well for “Ford v Ferrari.” However, Oscar-nominated “1917,” Sam Mendes’ continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, was not in contention at the Cas Awards, which makes the race very competitive.

As he reflects on his four decades working with Martin Scorsese, re-recording mixer Tom Fleischman smiles, recalling the roughly 25 feature and documentary productions on which they collaborated, from 1980's Raging Bull to the director's most recent mob epic, The Irishman.

From the beginning, sound mixer Tom Fleischman knew “The Irishman” was going to be “a quiet, restrained movie, and there weren’t going to be a lot of flashy moments.” But the lack of “big, huge sound sequences” didn’t mean it would be an easy movie to mix. Watch our exclusive video interview with Fleischman above.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the Netflix release casts Robert De Niro as Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a truck driver-turned mob hitman pulled between the powerful forces of Mafia honcho Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and union bigwig Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). The film is “really about the intimacy of the scenes between the characters,” Fleischman reveals, so it was important to “keep the quality of their voices and the performances as pure as possible, without any distractions.”
Because of this, Fleischman’s soundscape was “very narrow and very focused.

For most re-recording mixers, the most challenging scenes to mix are the ones with lots of action and requires a multitude of sound effects. For re-recording mixer, Tom Fleischman, it’s the opposite. He has been working with director Martin Scorsese since the ’80s. The two first met when Fleischman was a freshman at NYU and Scorsese was teaching film. They worked together later first on “Raging Bull” and then on “King of Comedy.”
Since then, Fleischman has continued to work with the director. Their most recent collaboration is on “The Irishman.” His main objective with the epic was to work on the sound, or rather quiet the sound so the viewer doesn’t get distracted from the performances. To both Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker, that was the most important thing, keeping the performances strong and intimate.
Fleishman explains the process below and discusses his relationship with Scorsese.
You and Marty go way back.

Last night, two important precursors for specific technical categories gave out their awards, helping to potentially inform how two Oscar fields may end up turning out. The pair of groups are the Cinema Audio Society, which ties into Best Sound Mixing at the Academy Awards, while the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild obviously ties into Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars. Did these results clear up any races? Well, they gave us some frontrunners, but I don’t think anything is locked up. Not with how this year has gone, at least. That being said, these were the expected outcomes yesterday, so take that into consideration as well. The Cinema Audio Society (or Cas) top prize went to Bohemian Rhapsody, taking the category of Live Action Motion Picture. 'The Aviator' movie with Leonardo DiCaprio as bizarre billionaire Howard Hughes: Bloated biopic. 'The Aviator' movie review: What's not good for the Spruce Goose… Imagine Citizen Kane directed by the Steven Spielberg of The Color Purple, Schindler's List, Amistad, and Saving Private Ryan.
