The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.
While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

Awards season continues. For a year with a lot of notable box office anomalies, the award recognitions are stacked with popular choices. The Golden Globes kicked things off, and then the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards started to show audiences who are seen as the favorites to win this year. Then, the Emmys threw a spotlight on the achievements made in television this past year, and now the list for the 2024 BAFTAs have been announced.
As seen in the previous awards ceremonies, Oppenheimer and Poor Things lead the charge in nominations. Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb film is a stunning achievement for the director as he is known to put out summer films that straddle the line of prestigious awards movies, and Oppenheimer is finally cracking through with nominations for his actors’ performances, as well as his directing and screenwriting. Emma Stone has also been the favorite this year with Poor Things,...

This year, women directors – and their women-centric subjects – swept the awards at Sundance Film Festival. Three women directors – Madeleine Gavin, Maryam Keshavarz, and Noora Niasari – won Audience Awards for their films on North Korea (“Beyond Utopia”), intergenerational motherhood (“The Persian Version”), and custody in diaspora (“Shayda”). Portraits of masculinity were also celebrated as well. First-time feature filmmaker Sing J. Lee won the Directing Award for his touching portrait of masculinity and fatherhood in “The Accidental Getaway Driver,” while Sauvnik Kaur’s intimate documentary on brotherhood “Against The Tide” took home a Special Jury Award. After two years of isolation and virtual festival-ing, it seems that stories of tenderness appealed over aggressive storytelling at Park City this year.
“This year’s Festival has been an extraordinary experience,” said Joana Vicente, Sundance Institute CEO. “The artists that comprise the 2023 Sundance Film Festival have demonstrated a sense of urgency and dedication to excellence in independent film.

Barry Jenkins will direct the untitled Fox Searchlight biopic based on the life of one of dance’s most influential choreographers and a seminal figure in the African American culture, Alvin Ailey.
Jenkins most recently garnered a best adapted screenplay Oscar nomination last year for his work translating James Baldwin’s “If Beale Street Could Talk” to the screen. The film, produced and distributed by Annapurna, also earned Regina King her first Academy Award for best supporting actress.
The director of course won best picture at the Oscars two years for his breakout film “Moonlight,” which also took home awards for best adapted screenplay — written by Jenkins, based on the play by Tarell Alvin McCraney — and best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali.

Oscar winner Barry Jenkins is preparing his return to the big screen after last year’s “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Deadline reports that the “Moonlight” and “Medicine for Melancholy” filmmaker has been set to direct Fox Searchlight’s currently untitled film based on the life of celebrated choreographer Alvin Ailey.
The outlet reports that the speciality hub of Fox struck a deal with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater just last year, “which granted full cooperation from the organization that controls the rights to Ailey’s choreography.” The package also includes the rights to Jennifer Dunning’s biography “Alvin Ailey: A Life In Dance.” Searchlight and the film’s producers will reportedly work closely with Artistic Director Robert Battle and Artistic Director Emerita, Judith Jamison, “to bring Ailey’s story and choreography to the screen.”

Toronto -- The dealmaking continued at a deliberate pace at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday as Sony Pictures Classics made its first buy of the fest by picking up the French and Arabic-language "Incendies."
The Weinstein Co. also continued to assert its presence at Tiff, closing a deal for Abe Sylvia's road-trip comedy "Dirty Girl" by ponying up about $3 million for rights to the U.S., U.K., France, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Denis Villeneuve's "Incendies" is the story of twins, a brother and sister, who, following the death of their mother, travel to the Middle East to search for a brother and father they've never met.
The film, based on a stage play by Wajdi Mouawad, played to positive reactions at the Venice and Telluride fests, and SPC's six-figure deal was concluded before the movie's first public screening Monday evening.

There's bad opening weekends ... and then there's B-a-d opening weekends.
Uma Thurman's latest flick might top the list of the latter category. "Motherhood," which had already flopped in the U.S., somehow did even worse when it made it across the pond.
Have you ever heard of a $130 opening weekend? Yeah, well neither had we -- until now. That's the total The Guardian reports this movie grossed the weekend of March 5 in the U.K.
With horrific numbers like that, fingers start pointing (and most likely some heads will start rolling). Metrodome, responsible for marketing the film in the U.K., and producer Jana Edelbaum are currently engaged in a blame-throwing match.
Meanwhile somewhere Uma Thurman is silently praying those rumors about "Kill Bill Vol. 3" are true.

By now, you may have heard the news that the Uma Thurman film Motherhood opened earlier this month in the UK in one theater and was seen by approximately 12 people in the first 72 hours. That's an opening weekend gross of £88, or roughly $130. When contacted by The Guardian, producer Jana Edelbaum said, "Think how much crap succeeds at the cinema. Motherhood is not bad. Uma Thurman’s latest movie, Motherhood, came and went in the U.S. last fall. The film grossed just under $100,000 during its run in theaters here in October, small potatoes when you compare it to Thurman’s previous films, but we guess people just haven’t forgiven her for My Super Ex-Girlfriend. People in the U.K. were even less excited to see the new film though, because on its opening day this past Sunday, it made £9, which means one person saw it that day. One person. On the bright side, at least they didn’t have to deal with anyone texting or talking the whole time. The total take for the weekend was £88, or about $131. That means nine people in all of England saw the film. Producer Jana Edelbaum, after being notified of her film’s losses said “We must have broken a new record for grosses.” Indeed.

Motherhood's disastrous performance at the box office provokes bitter confrontation between producer and UK distributor
It should have been a red carpet event. When just one British cinema was given exclusive permission to launch Uma Thurman's new film earlier this month, the film's producers presumably hoped that exclusivity would create a buzz around the movie. Though limiting the release would obviously limit takings, they must have hoped word of mouth could make it a slow-burning success.
But the tactic backfired catastrophically. Instead of audiences queueing round the block of the Apollo West End in Piccadilly Circus, London, to see the star of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, they stayed away in record-breaking numbers.
Over its opening weekend, no more than a dozen people went to see Motherhood, a semi-autobiographical account of stressed-out Manhattan parenting written and directed by Katherine Dieckmann. The film made just £88 on the weekend of Friday 5 March.

Uma Thurman has set a new box office record, but it's not something to be proud of. The 39-year-old actress' latest film is named the second biggest flop at the British box office, taking in a measly 88 pounds [2] in its opening weekend.
"Motherhood" had only sold one ticket, 9 pounds [.5], during its first showing on Sunday. But in its defense, it was released in just one theater. It was a semi-autobiographical effort of writer and director Katherine Dieckmann.
When informed by The Guardian of the bad news, producer Jana Edelbaum said, "You're kidding? We must have broken a new record for grosses."
It did much better when it opened in the U.S. last October with ,000, but not enough to cover its reported million budget.

What if they made a movie and no one came to see it? Someone did and it was called Motherhood.
Actually it's being too harsh to say that no one paid to see Motherhood when it came out at the beginning of this month in theaters over in the U.K. In Motherhood's March 5 opening weekend the movie made just £88 from the one cinema the film was playing at. Averaged out over the Friday to Sunday period that's less than £30 per day, or about 3.2 tickets sold each day.
To be fair Motherhood was never a box office smash -- or even by definition a financial failure. Calling it a bomb may even be a disservice to films like Gigli which still managed to break the $1 million dollar barrier in ticket sales. Instead, Motherhood only managed to gross a pitiful $93,388 when it came out Stateside last October.

Uma Thurman's attempt to be an average harried mom on film did not go over well UK audiences. 'Motherhood,' which was a decided flop in the Us, was a monster bomb when it opened in the UK. So ... guess how many people went to see the new Uma Thurman flick Motherhood when it opened (exclusively) at the Apollo West End theater in Picadilly Circus last weekend. No seriously, guess. 500 for the whole weekend? Maybe 150? Nope. Try 11 ... or maybe 10 (my math isn't great), but according to The Guardian, less than a dozen people showed up to see Katherine Dieckmann's mommy dramedy. Less than a dozen all weekend. That's at least 15 screenings, yes?
Thanks to The Guardian for sharing such a colorful movie story, but I must take exception with their headline. "The Uma Thurman film so bad it made £88 on opening weekend." Motherhood's disastrous performance at the box office provokes bitter confrontation between producer and UK distributor
The following correction was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and clarifications column, Saturday 17 April 2010
This news feature reported that few people went to see a new Uma Thurman film, Motherhood, during its UK opening weekend. Trying to analyse why, it reported the producer, Jana Edelbaum, as saying she intended to demand an explanation from Metrodome, the company responsible for UK marketing of the film. However, Metrodome and Jana Edelbaum have asked us to make clear that, contrary to the conclusion which our story went on to draw from this, no "bitter confrontation" between the two had taken place. Metrodome also notes that a launch method was discussed between them, and that a preview screening shortly before the release date – mentioned in the piece as a sign of nervousness – followed routine preview practice in its...
