For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.

“It was not going to be this.”
Terry Matalas doesn’t mince words about the difficulty of getting the “Next Generation” band back together for Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard.” In fact, when he came onboard as showrunner prior to the second season, there was no plan for a reunion of the beloved Enterprise-D crew (nor an appearance from the ship itself).
“Because that was not the show they had set out to make,” he added in a new interview with IndieWire, alongside production designer Dave Blass. “‘Picard’ was the deconstruction of Jean-Luc Picard, and it had a new cast, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
Matalas knew, though, that bringing back the full “Next Generation” cast for one final adventure — after their voyages came to a thud of an end with 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis” — would be electric if it happened.
He made it so.

In just about every way, the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard” is both about looking back and moving forward. In addition to reuniting the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise from “The Next Generation” for the first time since 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis,” it also features a new starship on which most of the action takes place: the U.S.S. Titan, first seen in animated form on “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and now refit as a Neo-Constitution Class Starship.
For showrunner, executive producer and self-professed “Star Trek” fan Terry Matalas, the inspiration for a retro-looking starship came while he was shopping for a car. “I missed a proper saucer section on the top part of a starship, and I couldn’t help but notice how many cars have gone retro these days. And I remember, as I was driving around, I thought, ‘What if Starfleet did that?...

Even in a throwback, Star Trek needs to boldly go. After twenty episodes of adventuring around the galaxy with a crew of mostly new faces, the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard finally brings the titular Starfleet officer back to his erstwhile crew. But rather than completely retread the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation, Picard will find new ways for the heroes to explore the galaxy. Most surprisingly, the series will take place not on a newer version of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the setting for all seven seasons and four movies of Next Generation, but on an upgraded model of the U.S.S. Titan.
“So, in the trailer, you see our hero ship of season three,” showrunner Terry Matalas told TrekMovie. “It’s actually a class that’s called, in Starfleet slang, the Neo-Constitution class or Constitution III.” For casual Trek viewers, the name Titan probably means nothing.

Nichelle Nichols — famous for playing Nyota Uhura in Star Trek and six classic-era Trek feature films — has died at the age of 89. Her legacy as an activist and icon will live on not just in Trek, but also in the countless people she inspired. Martin Luther King Jr. was a personal fan of Nichols on Star Trek, as are Barack Obama and Stacey Abrams. She changed the direction of NASA forever by recruiting the first Black and female American astronauts ever and changed the way mainstream science fiction TV actually looked. Basically, without Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek couldn’t have changed the world.
But what happened to Uhura, the character, after the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country? While the 2008 Tim Russ-directed fan film Of Gods and Men revealed Uhura had become a Starfleet captain, that fact wasn’t exactly canonical. But now, it appears that the...

Making good on their promise to deliver a singular virtual fan experience, the cloud graphics company Otoy has mounted its first project under a sweeping rights deal with “Star Trek” creator The Roddenberry Estate.
Variety reported last summer that Otoy would produce everything from holographic and digital renderings of the famous Starship Enterprise vessel to TV and movie sets. In its first staging, the company has reunited the living original cast and crew of the first-ever “Star Trek” pilot for a rendering of a founding set.
In an episode titled “The Cage,” director Robert Butler provided extensive behind-the-scenes materials to help in the recreation. Additional team returning included Sean Kenney, who played Captain Pike beginning in “Star Trek: The Menagerie,” and Chris Hunter, son of Jeffrey Hunter, who played Captain Pike in the pilot. Sandy Gimpel, who played a Talosian alien, and Dave Blass, production designer for “Star Trek: Picard,...

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 9
In the easter egg department, Star Trek: Picard would be hard-pressed to top the season 2 opener, “The Star Gazer,” which was absolutely packed with shout outs, call backs, and obscure references to the rest of the Trek canon. But, as season 2 heads towards its finale, the penultimate episode, “Hide and Seek,” still has a few deep cuts.
From some subtle costume choices for Jurati and Elnor to a lot of talk about Voyager, and to a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of a very special starship, this episode of Picard covered plenty of Star Trek history. You just had to be watching very closely.
La Sirena Grounded
The episode opens with La Sirena grounded, and with Rios desperate to figure out what to do next. Interestingly, this is the second time Star Trek: Picard has grounded the La Sirena right before the season finale.

In the summer of 1990, Warren Beatty’s labor-of-love, Dick Tracy, became a surprise commercial hit, earned acclaim for its visuals and technical artistry, and went on to win a number of high-profile awards. Its cast was bursting with stars and beloved character actors. So why, 25 years on, does it feel so forgotten?
Certainly, director-producer-star Beatty created a visual masterpiece and proved that “style over substance” isn’t always a bad thing. The design team was limited to the seven colors available to comic strip creator Chester Gould, and the movie reproduces that vivid look as faithfully as any live-action film could. From the spectacular flight across the twilit city that appears under the opening credits, it’s clear that Dick Tracy is something different.
Moments later, Gould’s trademark Rogues’ Gallery villains make their first appearance, brought to life by the makeup of John Caglione, Jr. and Doug Drexler, who...

Long before the comic book boom of the 21st Century, Hollywood's handling of heroes drawn from the funny pages was a touch and go enterprise. More at home in the serials era of the 40s and 50s, that iconography leaked out onto the big screen in only drips and drabs, a "Superman" here, a "Batman" there. And indeed, a year after Tim Burton brought the latter to unique Gothic heights in 1989, Warren Beatty brought another flesh and blood crime fighter to the big screen with bold expressionistic strokes. Today, "Dick Tracy" stands out as a hand-crafted wonder. Beatty's team was jammed with talent, and it needed to be, for this was an exercise in placing the viewer in a world only slightly familiar. Its extremes — and there were many — were a direct extension of design techniques and flourishes. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography,...

Ronald D. Moore's Battlestar Galactica series just got a little bit more awesome today with a video edit that features scenes from the series mixed with music from the classic 1986 film Top Gun. The result is just freakin' cool and worth five minutes of your time, especially if you're a fan of either of these properties. The video is called "Top Gun Galactica," and it was edited together by Nick Acosta, who explains what he wanted to accomplish with it,
"For my latest project, I recut one of my all time favorite movies to one of my all time favorite TV series. For part one of this film I wanted to show the life of a fighter pilot aboard a carrier at war. Much like a fireman, fighter pilots can be called at any moment and have to spring into action. Starbuck and Maverick are roughly the same character.

Star Trek writer Rob Bolivar and visual effects artist Doug Drexler have launched a campaign via Facebook to resurrect Star Trek: Enterprise with the hopes of a new series or possibly a film incarnation. With the recent resurgence of cancelled TV projects such as Arrested Development and Veronica Mars, the duo believe there is a likely chance we’ll see the series return if fans show their support. "A short while ago, Brannon Braga (co-creator and executive producer on Enterprise) mentioned that with enough support, it's possible that Netflix could resurrect Enterprise for future seasons or perhaps a movie," Bolivar said. "We took that to heart and started our campaign." For those in the know Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled in 2005 after dwindling ratings assisted by the poor box office performance of Star Trek: Nemesis. It was of the last Star Trek series to air before the 2009 reboot. What...

Today, comic book fans may recall Warren Beatty’s adaptation of Dick Tracy as a memorable misfire. When it was released in 1990, it was met with, at best, mixed reviews and while it performed respectably at the box office, missed Walt Disney’s estimates so the hoped for franchise was stillborn. Blame could be squarely placed at Beatty’s feet since he had a strangle hold on the film as its director, producer, and star. It got so crazy that poor Kyle Baker had to use only three approved head shots for the 64-page comics adaptation, which stretched even his considerable skills.
We have a great opportunity to reconsider this film now that Disney is releasing it tomorrow on Blu-ray. One of the things about the production is that Beatty wanted to recreate Chester Gould’s strip as faithfully as possible, which meant he limited the color palette to a mere seven colors,...

Machinima has posted the first two episodes of Blood and Chrome. You can watch them below. New episodes will be posted every Friday on the Machinima Prime YouTube channel, and the finale will be available on November 30.
CG Society has an interview with Doug Drexler (CG Supervisor) and Gary Hutzel (VFX Supervisor). You can read the full article at the link.
Blood & Chrome was a natural progression for Hutzel and his team, as they moved out of Caprica. In the last half of the season, the artists working on Caprica started to expand the show’s VFX footprint by doing entire virtual sets—something they perfected in Blood & Chrome.
Blood & Chrome is, nonetheless, a departure from previous productions in the franchise. “The show is unusual in the sense that it is cut very, very fast,” Hutzel describes. In fact, most of the shots in the two-hour movie span three seconds or less.

With the original "Star Trek" shuttlecraft prop Galileo just weeks away from being put up for auction, one major effort that included some big names in Star Trek to acquire and restore the shuttlecraft has fallen apart. Galileo Restoration, a group led by Propworx chief executive officer Alec Peters, will have to regroup following the departure of some key members of its group. Just a day after the Gene Roddenberry-endorsed Star Trek fan club the International Federation of Trekkers left the project, former "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Battlestar Galactica" visual effects artist Doug Drexler and longtime Star Trek graphics creator Michael Okuda have departed the project. These departures happen exactly when Galileo Restoration was beginning to raise money toward a $100,000 ...

If this money is talking the way it's supposed to, then it looks like the proposed film series "Space Command" is not only a go -- it already has an enthusiastic fan base. The series from science-fiction alums Marc Scott Zicree, Doug Drexler and Neil Johnson, set a Kickstarter goal of $75,000 to get started on a series that would pay homage to classic 1950s science-fiction. Instead, with more than a month to go, fans have responded with just under $130,000 by Tuesday, and the pledges haven't stopped there. "This says a lot about how the fans feel," Drexler told Airlock Alpha when providing an update on the project. And it's hard to argue that. So far, "Space Command" has attracted pledges from one less than 1,500 people. That's an average donation of $87. Already, two people have ...

Gene Roddenberry (and many writers before and after him) would complain a lot about how networks and studios would interfere with their vision. That's probably the main reason why one group of genre-known men aren't taking that route. They want to bring their science-fiction vision directly to the audience, and with the help of the audience. Marc Scott Zicree, Doug Drexler and Neil Johnson have joined forces to raise money for "Space Command," what they hope could be the first of a series of movies inspired by 1950s genre television and movies. Zicree, who will share the duties of writer, producer and director, is known for his work as a writer on a large number of genre projects, dating back to a 1981 episode of the cartoon series "Super Friends." However, he would become better ...

Eventful week. To play catch-up:
The big news that every site reported in a slightly different way is that Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome will be a digital series and a TV film, but not a TV show, at least not one produced by Syfy/Universal Cable Prods. You have probably read the Deadline article by now.
With the possibility that Universal may still shop B&C around, it doesn't sound like they have any immediate plans to make more of it beyond the existing pilot/web series/Mow.
No word yet on a release date, but Battlestar Wiki reports that we'll be seeing Blood & Chrome as a web series first and then as a TV movie.
Doug Drexler posted this the other day (full post at the link):
If sets had been built for this show, it would have cost 6 million easily, instead of only the 2 million it did cost,...

With only 10 days left before Caprica returns, different news bits are coming in from different places and hopefully there will be more of them in the next couple of weeks. Syfy has sent out screeners for episodes 1x10, "Unvanquished," and 1x11, "Retribution," to a bunch of TV bloggers and journalists, so we'll probably be seeing some reviews soon enough. Until then, here is another quick round of updates:
Michael Hinman (Airlock Alpha) has tweeted the writing and directing credits for the next two episodes. "Unvanquished" was written by Ryan Mottesheard and directed by Eric Stoltz, and "Retribution" was written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman (who had previously written the episode that introduced Vergis, "Know Thy Enemy") and directed by Jonas Pate.
Doug Drexler (CGI supervisor) has posted the Caprica 2010 Emmy Presentation Book over at Drex Files.
Some cast updates:
Sasha Roiz tweeted that he is currently filming an episode of House.

First CG supervisor Doug Drexler posted in his blog that "Virtuality" was alive (although he would later clarify that to say there was no word on a series) but now there seems to be even more life in a possible "Virtuality" series: Fox has moved the airing of the pilot away from a holiday to a Friday night. New press materials being released by Fox has "Virtuality" airing as its Fox Movie of the Week special airing June 26 at 8 p.m. Et. that's a huge change from the originally reported scheduled airing on July 4 -- a Saturday and a holiday which likely would mean almost no viewers. The pilot was developed by Ronald D. Moore and Michael Taylor, who both have roots in the Star Trek series as well as SciFi Channel's hit series "Battlestar Galactica." It stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who ...

Air Lock Alpha have found a posting on the blog of Doug Drexler in which the FX supervisor appears to be suggesting the possibility that Virtuality, the Ronald D. Moore pilot that Fox previously passed on, is belatedly being given a series. They are most excited by the possibility, but I’m not so sure that’s what Drexler is saying at all. The post can be taken in a couple of ways. Here’s a quote for you to judge for yourself: We got the word that a show we thought was dead is now on the fast track. It’s Ron Moore’s Virtuality. It just goes to show you how this business goes. [...]...

Update: Doug Drexler updated his post to say that "there is no word on a series," so it's not clear what exactly has prompted his comments that the show was "alive," unless he was unaware of the July 4 pilot airing, and the need to likely finish some effects because of it. We'll keep you posted. When Fox scheduled the pilot for Ronald D. Moore's "Virtuality" series to air on July 4 -- not only a Saturday, but a holiday -- it was believed this show was as good as dead. But not so fast. Fox has apparently decided to spare the series, and it's believed that plans are made to put additional episodes into production. "We got the word that a show we through was dead is now on the fast track," said Doug Drexler, the CG supervisor for the pilot, wrote in his blog. "It's Ron Moore's 'Virtuality.
