It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re heading back into the glorious ’80s to look at a film that was released during the slasher boom of 1981: Happy Birthday to Me (watch it Here)! This movie was directed by J. Lee Thompson, whose previous credits included the classics The Guns of Navarone and Cape Fear (not to mention Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes). To hear all about his contribution to the ’80s slasher era, check out the video embedded above.
From here, Thompson would go on to make several films with Charles Bronson, including 10 to Midnight and Death Wish 4: The Crackdown, as well as King Solomon’s Mines and the Chuck Norris adventure Firewalker.
Scripted by Timothy Bond, Peter Jobin, and John Saxton, Happy Birthday to Me...

Horror fans have Canada to thank for a lot of their favorite movies from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Black Christmas, Prom Night, Happy Birthday to Me, My Bloody Valentine — all these fright flicks and more were in fact made in Canada. And for a lot of these vintage movies, they were produced in the Great White North because of an enticing tax incentive. It was all part of a desire to fire up the country’s movie industry. And so long as these potential productions were chiefly shot and edited in Canada, as well as starred mostly Canadian actors, the movies’ costs were up to 100 tax deductible. Like those before him, producer Peter R. Simpson (Prom Night III: The Last Kiss) acted on this attractive business offer, though his timing could have been better. By the time Curtains came out in 1983, Canada’s most significant era of “B” movies was...

My love of horror films dates back forty years. In the fall of 1986, I accidentally stumbled across an aficionado’s bonanza – a local video store had hundreds of video posters in the cabinets underneath the movies it was renting. One of the posters was for Mortuary (1983), a horror film from the Vestron Video label that I knew of from another video store but had not seen. I liked the poster art but knew nothing of the film. To my recollection, it never played at area theaters, not even the 2-screen indoor/drive-in three miles from me that showed just about anything that was low-budget and esoteric.
Mortuary opened on Friday, September 2, 1983 in Los Angeles and is not a great movie, but it is not terrible, either. It does, however, move at a snail’s pace, so be forewarned if you have not seen it.

Until you start watching killer rat movies, you don’t realize how few killer rat movies there are. It’s not a sub-genre that sparked off franchises (does Willard and its sequel Ben count? Let me know) or inspired Funko toys, but rather has films strewn here and there throughout horror history. Today we’re scurrying back to my particular turf for Deadly Eyes (1982), Golden Harvest’s Canadian-lensed attempt to move over from Kung Fu to Rodent Fu. (Sorry Joe Bob Briggs, I couldn’t resist.)
Released in October by Golden Harvest (the Honk Kong based studio with nearly 300 production credits) in Canada and stateside by Warner Brothers the following April, Deadly Eyes (aka Night Eyes) laid droppings all over the place according to critics and audiences alike, and was quickly relegated to clamshell heaven. Was it a film ahead of its time? God no. But Deadly Eyes is way more fun than I remembered,...

It’s something of an understatement to say that the work of poet and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe has had a lasting effect on the horror genre. When one looks back at mid ‘70s to early ‘80s horror, it’s quite surprising to see how many Canadian made films are nestled among fan favorites. Titles such as Black Christmas, Shivers, Prom Night, Happy Birthday to Me, and My Bloody Valentine continue to delight and shock veteran horror lovers or those just starting their jagged journey down the terror path. There is one, however, that due to a troubled production and poor distribution, seems relegated to the discount bins of time. Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on, uh, Curtains (1983), an unsung slasher weirder than a sack full of rabid beavers.
Released by Jensen Farley Pictures in March of ’83 in the Us, and September of ’84 by Norstar Releasing in (my home and) native land, Curtains received a very limited release in both countries, but coming as it did at a time when the Canadian film industry had...

A lot of classic Canadian genre films are making the transition to Blu-ray this year. Some have had a long home video life, and have been widely available throughout various formats, and others, like Curtains have had a practically non-existent presence on any format. From what I understand, a terrible version of the film was released in a random multi-pack, and featured audio and video quality that may have rivaled a third generation VHS dub. Synapse have resurrected Curtains, in a way only Synapse could. One thing you can be sure of, when a title is announced as being released to Blu-ray by the label, is that they’ll either put out a perfect, preserved transfer of the film, or they’ll release nothing at all. A lot of the time their releases get delayed, because they aren’t happy with how it has turned out, and they would like...

Unfortunately for me, before Scream Factory announced that they would be releasing Deadly Eyes to Blu-ray, I had never even heard of the film. As often as I frequented the video store(Daily, for the 5-for-5-for-5 deals), I never even saw Deadly Eyes on the shelf. Had someone explained to me back then, or any time since, that a film exists wherein they strap giant rat costumes to the backs of small dogs, and get them to attack people by stuffing dog food in their pockets, I would have been on a mission to find said movie, because that sounds awesome. Does it not? On the bright side, this means that my first exposure to this film, was Scream Factory’s gorgeous Blu-ray release, stuffed with extras exposing everything I could ever want to know about these dogs dressed up as killer rats. Even before I watched the interviews on the disc,...

Now is the best time ever to be a horror fan. Even if you are not a fan of the new releases, we still have amazing releases like this to look forward to, that allows us to re-discover lost classics. Synapse is known for taking their time with titles, and not releasing them until the final product is perfect, so that is what you can expect on the 8th of July when Curtains finally comes home. One of my favorite slasher films of the 80s, Curtains was always kind of a bitch to track down, and when you were able to find it, the print was usually shit. Synapse Films is about to change all that. Read on for details.

Dachshunds dressed up as giant rats terrorize Toronto in a nature gone amok thriller from the director of Enter the Dragon. Guilty pleasures don’t get much guiltier than Deadly Eyes, and surprise announcements don’t get much more surprising than Scream Factory’s plan to release this 1982 creature feature.
It really would be an understatement to state that Scream Factory’s announcement Friday afternoon that they have acquired the rights to the early Eighties Warner Bros./Golden Harvest mutant rat b-movie bonanza Deadly Eyes came as a surprise to most everyone.
This slice of Canuxsploitation starring Scatman Crothers (The Shining) and Canadian scream queens Lesleh Donaldson (Curtains) and Lisa Langlois (Happy Birthday to Me) has been toiling in obscurity for so long I don’t think too many people expected to ever see it get an official release in any post-vhs form. Also known as The Rats, this Canadian horror movie was released in the Us in 1983 and has actually never been available on DVD. Scream Factory announced that they’ll be releasing the movie to both Blu-ray and DVD next year:
“Fans of Canadian 80′s horror and animal attack films are in for a treat next Summer as we will be releasing 1983′s rat infested Deadly Eyes–which has never been on DVD or Blu-ray before.
The film stars Scatman Crothers (The Shining), Canadian Scream Queens Lesleh Donaldson (Curtains, Funeral Home) and Lisa Langlois (Happy Birthday to Me, The Nest) and if you’ve seen it, you know what a guilty pleasure it is.
More details on the release will become more clear in early Spring next year.”

Richard Ciupka’s unfairly maligned 1983 horror film Curtains was screened recently as part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Scary Movies 7 exhibition that also included screenings of Lucky McKee’s new film All Cheerleaders Die, Michele Soavi’s highly regarded Cemetery Man (1994), Eli Roth’s new film The Green Inferno, John D. Hancock’s ultra creepy Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971), the New York premiere of Clive Barker’s 1990 film Nightbreed - the Cabal Cut, and Peter Carter’s brilliant Rituals (1977), better known as The Creeper, which stars Hal Holbrook and Lawrence Dane in a film that is clearly influenced by John Boorman’s Deliverance (1971) but easily stands on its own as a strong piece of independent filmmaking.
Appearing in person at the Curtains screening was actress Lesleh Donaldson who played Christie Burns, the ice skater in the film.

J. Lee Thompson is an auteur – he’s an amazing director with a personal sense of style, usually low-key and humorous, and actors love working with him. With films like The Guns of Navarone (1961), Cape Fear (1962), Conquest of the Planet Of the Apes (1972) and Battle For the Planet Of The Apes (1973), J. Lee Thompson is a favorite amongst genre fans. My personal favorite is The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud (1975), starring Michael Sarrazin, Jennifer O’Neill and Margot Kidder. If you haven’t seen this film, you need to run to your nearest video/dvd rental store – David Fincher currently holds the remake rights, so it’s only a matter of time before we see a redux! In the early 80s, Thompson directed the popular horror cult classic Happy Birthday To Me (1981), starring Melissa Sue Anderson (of Little House On The Prairie fame) Glenn Ford (who needs no introduction), and Lesleh Donaldson...

UK writer J.A. Kerswell has blood on his hands. As one of the leading authorities of the slasher movie phenomenon, he’s covered every bloody aspect of the much-maligned genre. For over a decade he has celebrated maniac movies with his highly addictive Hysteria Lives website while recently branching out into podcasts and DVD commentaries.
His exhaustively-researched book chronicling the genre, Teenage Wasteland, was released in the UK two years ago to glowing reviews (many from the mainstream press). It’s a fascinating examination of the slasher film that covers everything from its early Grand Guignol influences to its modern day resurgence. Filled with international artwork from Kerswell’s personal memorabilia collection, it’s a must-have for both slasher movie buffs and obsessive cinephiles. Kerswell was nice enough to put down the butcher knife a moment to discuss the publication, which has come to the Us in a re-titled version called,...

It’s the “Psycho” of the 1980s! I came in to this movie expecting it to be mediocre but was pleasantly surprised that it was good. This Canadian horror film has multiple overtones of Hitchcock’s “Psycho”: a creepy house with a person running this bed and breakfast not being “all there” in the head. This was released on VHS by Paragon Video and is in demand with movie collectors. It was released on DVD in 2007.
The plot is Heather goes on school vacation to her Grandmother’s recently renovated Bed-n-Breakfast to help out. We learn that Maude Chalmers’ husband disappeared and she converted his funeral home for guests to stay. Mrs. Chalmers has a man named Billy, who is mentally slow, as a ground worker. This creepy ex-funeral home isn’t so peaceful when bodies turn up dead with no just cause. The...
