Eliza Hittman (was love at first sight for her directorial debut It Felt Like Love) and Yung Chang (a docu-helmer best known for the award-winning portrait of modern China in Up the Yangtze) are just two of the dozen folks/projects invited to the upcoming Sundance Institute 2015 January Screenwriters Lab. The labs work as a testing ground of sorts, with Lab Director Ilyse McKimmie seeing to it that the screenwriters are mentored by filmmaking professionals. I’d wager that a good portion of these projects on paper eventually make it onto the big screen (say about 65 to 70 percent) and about 35-40 percent break into the actual Sundance Film Fest. Not unlike her debut picture, Hittman’s potential sophomore pic Beach Rats features NYC borough backdrop and via a teenage vantage point but is sure to stir the pot with tad bit more destruction. After Up the Yangtze, China Heavyweight, and The Fruit Hunters,...

Guitarist and musician Mick Turner's resume speaks for itself. Not only has he earned acclaim as a member of instrumental outfit Dirty Three but he's also logged time as part of The Tren Brothers, while working with an array of artists and groups including Cat Power, Boxhead Ensemble, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and even contributed to the score of John Hillcoat's "The Proposition." But he's also been turning out records under his own name and so coming soon is his latest album Don't Tell The Driver, and he's got a pretty special video to go with it. Cam Archer directed the spot for "The Bird Catcher," and his collaboration with Turner began a few years ago when the filmmaker used some of his tracks for his feature "Shit Year." "I did the music for the film rather than the other way around. Without me actually seeing it, we talked...

If there had to be any trend from my top 10 albums from 2012, the word of the year would be "lean." I admire the understated displays of self-editing. Fiona Apple's album didn't have a note or breath wasted; Miguel's tracklist was tidy, whereas Frank Ocean could learn to trim; Kendrick Lamar and Killer Mike ably balanced comedy and drama with carefully selected words; and mostly-instrumentals like Swans, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and the Dirty Three sequenced those excesses into something tangible and rare. Other trends: I fell in love with very few country and Americana albums this year, though there...

The key to any voyage into the twangy depths of this weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is planning.
San Francisco's annual free celebration of bluegrass (and also not bluegrass) in Golden Gate Park, now in its 12th consecutive year, has gotten so popular that shuttling between stages to see all of your favorite bands can prove virtually impossible. Instead, the best idea is often just to get there early, pick a spot near the stage you're most interested in and stay there for the long haul.
(Scroll Down For Playlist And Lineup)
While the lineup was announced months ago, the actual full schedule, complete with set times, was only released recently. Essential planning's gotta all be done Right This Very Second.
Our top recommendations are Ben Kweller, Buddy Miller, Robert Earl Keen, The Dirty Three, the Heartless Bastards, Son Volt and Les Claypool's Duo De Twang. If you're curious as to why this is exciting,...

It's easy to get excited about the amount of quality ingredients Lawless brings to its true-crime brew: director John Hillcoat (who made the underseen, underrated The Road), post-punk icon Nick Cave, who not only wrote the screenplay but also composed the score with Dirty Three violinist Warren Ellis, and the presence of actors like Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Gary Oldman. It's about that weirdest, most fascinating of all 20th century American social engineering mistakes, Prohibition, and it's based on Matt Bondurant's fictionalized history of his bootlegging family and their battles with the Law, The Wettest County in the World. It's lushly photographed and its period details authentic. The foamy head on the illegal beer: 85-year-old...

I’m changing things up a little bit this month. Instead of the usual Six (or whatever number I’m in the mood for) Things You Should Be Listening To, I’ve decided to mix things up somewhat. As you doubt gathered from the change in feature title.
In celebration of End of the Road Festival, this coming end of August, I’ve decided to go with an End of the Road special for this month’s feature. Let’s just briefly cover why;
Two weeks today I’ll have quit my job, having handed in my notice two weeks prior to today.
Two weeks tomorrow, or today for all you readers who read this on its day of posting, I will be on the road to End of the Road.
I am very excited about both of these facts. However, I’m not going to bore you with the...

Waking to the blinding sunshine that crept softly through our window today, a mouth dryer than the room is humid, the leftover aroma of takeaway pizza and alcohol. Once leftover cans are consumed to tend to the hangover and a waking cigarette, it soon becomes clear that everyone else using the guest house last night was also watching Slayer. Even the tall Norse gentleman who had arrived like a business man staying away on a training course.
Lethargic piecing together of ourselves, showers, a few cans of Red Bull, another taxi ride to ‘Ally Pally’ and we’re onto day number two of the I’ll Be Your Mirror experience. Part Two of my review. Today is my birthday.
Saturday
On arrival it’s immediately clear that yesterday’s prediction rings true today; such a variety in colour of the attire on display, and nary a Slayer T Shirt on show.

In an era when much music is seen as so disposable and instant success and sales are favoured over longevity and originality, it is genuinely exciting to listen to a band that are in this game for the long haul. Fifteen years after the release of their first record, legendary Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three return with this collection of partly improvised, beautifully arranged tracks, proving that despite all their other artistic endeavours, when these musicians come together something truly unique occurs.
What is perhaps most impressive about this record is its restraint. Post-Rock is often categorised by an absence of recognisable structure, long, sprawling solos and, at times, a degree of self-indulgence. Not so on Toward The Low Sun, with none of its nine tracks straying far over the 5 minute mark, and each one as perfectly structured as the last, though you wouldn’t assume...

While Park City continues to buzz with celebs and films and the festival heads into its final weekend, let's take a moment take our eyes off the movies, and instead open up our ears. As it turns out, a good handful of the movies at the Sundance Film Festival are being powered by the music of some pretty impressive performers. Kicking things off, TwentyFourBit has learned that the eternally awesome Nick Cave has teamed up with his Grinderman, Dirty Three and Bad Seeds bandmate and "The Road" co-composer Warren Ellis, to tune up the Peter Jackson-prodcued, Amy Berg-directed "West of Memphis." Of course, as you know, the film is an in-depth chronicle of the saga of the West Memphis Three, with the film bringing forth fresh evidence pointing toward the real perpetrator of the crimes. But that's not the only movie where we'll be hearing music from Cave,...

As explained in my post last month, I'm breathless that the Dirty Three are prepping their first album in seven years. And, today, the trio has something to show from it. "Rising Below" features the same attention to recording detail as their last "Cinder" did, with a close miking of the hollow kick drums, textures of the violin and the stoked, narrative guitar lines mumbling through the tubes. Drummer Jim White carries the thing as the mid-toned instruments go and have their own says, several takes and dubs eventually merging into a tension-filled series of ebbs. I'm hot for it, I...

Three of Australia's leading female artists have collaborated to become a 'supergroup'. Friends Sarah Blasko, Sally Seltmann and Holly Throsby, who are collectively named Seeker Lover Keeper, have made a debut record that is due for release next month. According to The Daily Telegraph, the trio employed Dirty Three's Jim White to play drums on the CD, together with guitarist Shahzad Ismaily, who has worked with Tom Waits and Martha Wainwright. They also asked well-known actors Barry Otto, Aden Young and John Waters to mime three of their songs in videos rather than starring in them themselves. Blasko said: "Three (more)...

Good news for comic fans this morning as its annoucned that Warren Ellis's (not the wild-eyed methsualah bearded Dirty Three and Bad Seeds violinist, the other one) Gravel has been picked up for big-screen development by Legendary Pictures, the shingle behind everything from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight to 300 and Watchmen.
According to Variety, Ellis is to pen the first draft of the screenplay which centres on Sas soldier William Gravel who moonlights as a supernatural P.I.-come-mercenary.
Gravel is just the latest title on Legendary's remarkable roster which also includes soon-coming highlights such as Where The Wild Things Are, Inception and Jonah Hex.

All Tomorrow’s Parties is a multi-day music festival originating in England, held annually since 1999. For the past two years, there's been a U.S. branch of the festival at Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, New York. This year, Day One -- Don’t Look Back/Comedy -- featured Panda Bear, Iron and Wine, Dirty Three, and a comedy stage curated by David Cross. Day Two was music curated by All Tomorrow’s Parties. Day Three was curated by underground mainstays the Flaming Lips and featured No Age and Bob Mould performing Husker Du, Menomena, Deerhoof with Martha Colburn, and many more. I attended Day Two.

The sheer quantity of festivals on the calender in the U.K alone has begun to reach far into the hundreds. Every 60's throw back farmer with a field in Suffolk or any double-barreled named family with an estate in some sparse woods between villages in Norfolk seem to be more than happy to allow the cider swilling, barefoot, dancing masses to camp with them for three days. What's becoming harder and harder is deciding which ones to get yourself to. Green Man Festival in Glanusk Park, Wales felt right this time around; It was my birthday weekend, it was a relatively young festival (6 years old), only 15000 tickets and 100 bands on a small beautifully kept site which, as local legend would have it, harbors 3,000 mischievous spirits... cool. All of this and, as a completely independent music festival, not a pint of Carling or a pink skinned, sun stroked Oasis fan in sight.
