Oscar-nominated Belgian director Dominique Deruddere believes the shared and universal fear of failure has helped his new film The Chapel resonate with the audience at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, where it is in the running for the main Golden Goblet award.
“I feel that the young people everywhere today relate to that feeling of having to perform, having to be the best in everything they do, and the fears that brings,” says Deruddere. “I don’t want to spoil the ending, but it is about liberation from that and how to simply be yourself.”
Deruddere first caught international attention back in 2000 when he picked up an Oscar nomination in the foreign language category for Everybody’s Famous!, a film that tore chunks out of the contemporary music scene and its (apparently) manipulated star system.
With The Chapel, Deruddere is back into the world of music but there’s...

The Shanghai International Film Festival unveiled the competition selection for its 25th-anniversary edition Monday, featuring a lineup heavy on local Chinese titles, as well as substantial inclusion from Iran and Japan. Notably, though, festival organizers chose not to include a single film from the U.S. movie industry in their 2023 competition lineup.
The 2023 Shanghai festival, running June 9-18, will be the first version of the event that’s easily accessible to the global film industry since the Covid-19 pandemic began in early 2020. Last year, the festival was canceled in the wake of Shanghai’s monthlong Covid-19 lockdown and the government’s strict travel restrictions at the time. The festival was held the previous two years, but it became an almost entirely domestic Chinese affair, as flights in and out of China were hard to come by at the time (and all travelers had to endure lengthy and expensive hotel quarantines...

The 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, June 9 to 18, has unveiled the titles in contention for awards in its four main feature-length sections: main competition, Asian New Talent, Animation film and documentary. These are eligible for the festival’s prestigious Golden Goblet Awards, winners of which will be announced at the Shanghai Grand Theater on the evening of June 17.
While Siff remains the only mainland China festival to be accredited as a so-called A-list event by the International Federation of Film Producers (Fiapf), its selections are largely separate and distinct from those at other major international festivals.
While the lineup includes nine mainland Chinese titles, two from Hong Kong and five from Iran, there are, for instance, no films that hail from the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Korea.
Feature Film Competition
“All Ears” Dir. Liu Jiayin (China)
“Dust To Dust” Dir. Jonathan Li (China)
“Good Autumn, Mommy” Dir.

BRUSSELS -- 2007 was a vintage year for Flemish cinema, with a record 1.2 million people seeing Flemish movies, according to figures from the Flemish Audiovisual Fund.
Flemish films also were selected 600 times for festivals and won prizes or were nominated 115 times.
The surge was led by movies such as Dominique Deruddere's "Firmin" and Nic Balthazar's "Ben X", which helped audience figures leap past the previous record in 2003 and more than double the 2004 number.

BRUSSELS -- Flemish cinema enjoyed a record year in 2007 thanks to such local movies as Dominique Deruddere's "Firmin" and Nic Balthazar's "Ben X".
Audience figures for Flemish films surged past the record set in 2003, were 25% higher than last year and more than double the 2004 number, according to figures from the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF).
Even before the year is out, the VAF said that the 1.1 million admissions to Flemish movies in Belgium had beaten the 2003 milestone, set when "The Alzheimer Case" (The Memory of a Killer), "Team Spirit 2" and "Any Way the Wind Blows" were showing.
Five Flemish Belgian films attracted more than 100,000 cinemagoers this year. Two films already have exceeded the 200,000 mark: "Firmin" (219,721) and "Ben X" (253,473). "Ben X", Belgium's entry for the foreign-language film Oscar, also is set for a remake for the U.S. market.
They were followed by the police drama "Missing" (Vermist), directed by Jan Verheyen, which set a record for a local film at the Belgian boxoffice, grossing €341,000 its opening five days (its admissions total is 175,696).
