I am not the biggest fan of math. It's a subject I was never good at. It looks like I never would have made it at Pixar animation, because there is a great deal of math involved. A Ted Ed video explains how math is used in the art of developing their classic movies. Even though I'm not into math, I still found all of the stuff they talked about in this video interesting.
The folks at Pixar are widely known as some of the world's best storytellers and animators. They are perhaps less recognized as some of the most innovative math whizzes around. Pixar Research Lead Tony DeRose delves into the math behind the animations, explaining how arithmetic, trigonometry and geometry help bring Woody and the rest of your favorite characters to life.

If you're one of those students, current or former, who always wondered why it might be good to learn so much math, there's finally at least one reasonable answer. A couple videos have surfaced online looking at how integral math is when working at Pixar Animation. While there's plenty of art that goes into making their stunning animated films, the animation is still done on a computer, which is made possible due to lots of math. Below you can watch a Ted talk from Pixar Research Lead Tony DeRose as he discusses the importance of math in Pixar's work, and also a way nerdier video diving into one of their animation systems. Here's the Ted Talk feauring Pixar Animation's Research lead Tony DeRose (via SlashFilm): And here's the Pixar Keynote at the Gpu Technology Conference (found via io9): The Ted talk is pretty straight forward, and hopefully there's...

When watching a Pixar movie, how many times do you wonder to yourself (or aloud, probably) “How the hell did they do that?” The animation giant continues to impress with its dedication to lifelike details and colorful characters, but crafting these creations is no small feat. It requires dozens of experts and computer wizzes, but the one thing all those hardworking individuals have in common is that they rely on good old-fashioned math to get the job done. Pixar research lead Tony DeRose explores some of the math behind the animations in this informative-but-brief clip. All the boring math you didn’t pay attention to in high school is used every day at Pixar to bring its stories to life...
