The Apple Original Films drama about the hearing daughter of deaf adults who pursues a singing career also won Adapted Screenplay for Siân Heder, and its Troy Kotsur took Best Supporting Actor. It was a “Dune” crafts celebration Sunday at the Oscars, with Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi powerhouse from Warner Bros. grabbing six out of eight wins for cinematography, production design, editing, original score, sound, and visual effects.
“Dune” was the big screen event of the season, ushering in the reopening of theaters after the pandemic with its heady mix of politics and religion wrapped around a hero’s journey in the desert. It only came up short in costume design and makeup and hairstyling, where it got overshadowed by three-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven’s ’70’s punk look for Emma Stone in “Cruella” (Disney), and the transformation of Best Actress winner Jessica Chastain into the infamous televangelist for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures).
The win for makeup artists Linda Dowds and Justin Raleigh and hairstylist Stephanie Ingram follows the recent trend of Oscar-winning biopics that includes “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,...

After already taking home 6 Oscars, Denis Villeneuve’s epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune continued its below the line domination at Sunday’s Academy Awards as it took home the Best Visual Effects Oscar. The film looked to be the favorite in the category after taking home the top honor at this year’s Ves gala.
Accepting the award from presenters Rachel Zegler and Jacob Elordi was Dune‘s VFX team which included Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles, Brian Connor and Gerd Nefzer. This marked the 6th Oscar for the film having already taken home best Sound, Score, Editing and Production Design for the film which was a favorite to dominate the below-the-line categories going into the ceremony. Lambert and Nefzer had previously won Oscars while working on a Villeneuve film in 2018 for Blade Runner: 2049.

The most shocking snub of this year’s Oscar nominations was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.” “It’s better to be in that position than the opposite,” Villeneuve tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I prefer people say you should have been there instead of ‘what the hell are you doing there?’ I’m not making movies to get awards recognition. If you do that, you’re not walking the right path. I make cinema because I love the art form of cinema. I love making movies. If you had told me a year ago that we would get 10 nominations, including best picture, I would have laughed and said, ” You are out of your mind.”
On this episode of the award-winning “Variety Awards Circuit Podcast,” double Oscar-nominee Villeneuve discusses his passion for creating the world of “Dune” and that best director snub.

The best picture Oscar race is in a dead heat, with any number of paths to victory. But there’s another fierce competition, years in the making, to be the first streaming giant to win the Academy Awards’ most coveted honor.
On the television side, Netflix and Amazon each made a play to become the first streamer to win the Emmy Award for either of the top series categories, but Hulu shattered the glass ceiling with “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2017. On the film side, could Apple Original Films be the surprise streaming giant to take home the Oscar statuette for best picture with the delightful family drama “Coda”?

The Hollywood Critics Association held its fifth annual awards on Monday in person at the Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles, Calif.
Siân Heder’s “Coda,” which won for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture at the SAG Awards Sunday, took the top award for best picture, with Heder winning for adapted screenplay and Troy Kotsur winning for supporting actor. The Hca also honored the cast of the film with a spotlight award, while the best cast ensemble award went to the cast of Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast.”
“Dune” led the evening with four awards, including the best director tie between Denis Villeneuve and “Power of the Dog” helmer Jane Campion. Additional “Dune” awards included best score for Hans Zimmer, best cinematography for Greig Fraser and best visual effects for Brian Connor, Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert and Tristan Myles.

Very often the Visual Effects Oscar category is one of the more intriguing (and confounding) below-the-line categories because usually few of the nominees have anything to do with the Best Picture race. But there is one Best Picture contender up for this award this year. And going by Gold Derby odds, this isn’t even a close race, because every single Expert and Editor alike thinks the team behind Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” including a couple of VFX wizards from his previous Visual Effects Oscar winner “Blade Runner 2049,” is going to win.
SEEHow to watch ‘Dune’
But this isn’t about predicting the winner, as much as insuring that academy voters and Gold Derbyites have a clearer picture of what “Dune” offers to warrant its nomination in the first place. You only have to watch the film to understand why it’s considered the favorite here, because its visual effects work by Paul Lambert,...

The most shocking snub of the Oscar noms was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.”
The film’s 10-nomination haul includes best picture and adapted screenplay, the latter perceived to be its most difficult to attain. Yet, Villeneuve’s lack of recognition for directing could rally widespread support from Academy voters and result in the film tying or surpassing a 50-year record held by “Cabaret” (1972).
Bob Fosse’s classic adaptation of the Broadway stage musical set a record at the 45th Academy Awards for the most Oscars received without winning best picture. Fosse’s film took eight trophies: for directing, actress (Liza Minnelli), supporting actor (Joel Grey), sound, art direction (now called production design), cinematography, film editing and the now defunct score adaptation and original song score. Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” walked away with three major prizes at the ceremony: picture,...

In the ever-growing list of awards shows, American Cinematheque is throwing its clout behind a new one they call Tribute to the Crafts, an in-person celebration of the artisans behind the scenes who don’t get nearly the attention during the season that their above-the-line colleagues seem to. The ceremony, which will try to rectify this oversight, is set for Wednesday January 26, at the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
The new show will “honor those who are at the very heart of filmmaking, and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera, over the past year.” The evening will celebrate individuals in fourteen categories covering all aspects of filmmaking and will showcase clips from each of their respective films. The audience for this invitation-only event will be composed of members from AMPAS, PGA, WGA, DGA, SAG-AFTRA, BAFTA and Critics Choice.
