Leo is an animated musical comedy film directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel, and David Wachtenheim, from a screenplay by Robert Smigel, Paul Sado, and Adam Sandler. The Netflix film revolves around Leo the Lizard who has been stuck in the same Florida school for over seven decades, and when he finds out that he only has a year to live but instead he ends up helping the students. The 2023 Oscars hit almost all the right notes, with Jimmy Kimmel doing a terrific job of hosting, starting with a monologue that acknowledged last year’s slap heard around the world. Kimmel used his opening bit to point out there are 16 first-time acting nominees, including two from Encino Man – Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.
Kimmel poked fun at Babylon for being a bust at the box office and noted Batgirl is the first superhero to be defeated by an accounting department. He also confirmed James Cameron declined his invitation, joking that you know a show is too long when even Cameron can’t sit through it.

It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.
“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.

One of the aspects of Pixar’s “Turning Red” that the filmmakers are most proud of is the movie’s depiction of Toronto’s Chinatown. Not a Chinatown full of offensive cliches or dangerous stereotypes, but the type of Chinatown that feels real and lived in and true to its real-world counterpart. This marks the sixth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Animated Feature predictions.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

To the surprise of no one, James Cameron’s dazzling Avatar: The Way of Water dominated the 21st annual Visual Effects Society Award nominations, which were announced on Tuesday. The juggernaut earned 14 Ves noms, a record number for a feature film or any single project in the society’s awards history.

DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is, ostensibly, part of the “Shrek” universe. It’s a sequel to 2011’s “Puss in Boots,” which itself was a spin-off of a character who was first introduced in “Shrek 2” and subsequently appeared in “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After.” And as such, there’s a certain vibe you expect from the film.
But the movie handily discards that expectation early on, when Puss (voiced once again by Antonio Banderas) finds himself in a bar. “Turning Red” is unlike any other Pixar movie. Visually, it draws inspiration from Japanese anime like “Sailor Moon” and the work of filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. After working on multiple Toy Story films and shorts, director Angus MacLane began to wonder about the inspiration for the character of Buzz Lightyear. Since Buzz, the toy, is based on Andy’s favorite movie, why not make that movie? Lightyear tells the story of Buzz Lightyear, the space ranger, as he spends years trying to return home after being marooned on an unknown planet. When he finally figures it out, he encounters an army of ruthless robots commanded by Zurg. The challenge for MacLane was to create a film that an existing character would be based on, without telling the same story.

With Turning Red, director Domee Shi revisited her own past to create a story of a young girl struggling with pleasing her family as she comes into adolescence. It’s a story so relatable that Lindsey Collins, who was running Pixar’s creative development at the time, says she practically begged Shi to let her produce the film. Turning Red follows Meilin (Rosalie Chiang), a 13-year-old girl from Toronto who works at her family’s temple to make her mother Ming (Sandra Oh) proud. Due to a family blessing/curse, Meilin finds herself transforming into a large red panda whenever she experiences strong emotions, which is less than ideal for a teenager.

If there was a defining lesson that Domee Shi learned early in her animation career, it was to “just trust my weird gut.”
“If an idea is really, really weird and kind of shocking, instead of self-editing and getting rid of it in the story, I’ll just let it play out and see the reaction before messing with it,” she told TheWrap.
Shi, who first joined Pixar in 2011 as a storyboard intern before working on the animation for major releases including 2018’s “Incredibles 2” and 2019’s “Toy Story 4,” followed this principle when pitching her beautifully strange and affecting short film “Bao” — for which she won an Oscar in 2019.
And she stuck to her instincts again when developing her feature film debut, “Turning Red,” another beautifully strange and affecting movie that is the most popular Disney+ original to date and cemented Shi’s status as a capital-a artist with a distinct point of view.

In what Criterion is describing as their “first collaboration” with fabled animation studio Pixar, Andrew Stanton’s “Wall•E” will be joining the collection this November (spine #1161). And, typical of Criterion releases, it will be festooned with special features, including a new essay (by Sam Wasson), a pair of audio commentaries and a new documentary called “Wall•E A to Z,” featuring co-writer/director Andrew Stanton and writer Jim Reardon.
“Wall•E,” released back in 2008, originated as an idea from “Up” director (and current Pixar chief creative officer) Pete Docter called “Trash Planet.” Soon the idea mutated, as it was passed to Stanton and the focus became squarely on a small, lonely robot inhabiting an abandoned, garbage-covered Earth. When another droid visits Earth, the sleek new Eve, Wall•E falls in love. He follows her to the Axiom, a cruise ship in space, and together they reignite the human race.

The special edition of “Wall-e,” the first collaboration between Criterion and Disney’s Pixar, features a 4K digital master approved by director Andrew Stanton, according to Criterion. The three-disc set will be available Nov. 22, 2022, and is currently available to pre-order from Criterion’s site for 39.96.
“Wall-e” is set in the 29th century, after humans have long since fled Earth for outer space, leaving the movie’s protagonist — the last functioning trash-compacting robot — to go about the work of cleaning up the pollution-choked planet, one piece of garbage at a time. Here’s something new: a Pixar feature that includes (gasp) the use of the word “sexy.” In Domee Shi’s charming feature directorial debut, “Turning Red,” an assortment of factors — from the big-time crush that inspires winning leading lady Mei to draw some self-professed “sexy” pictures to the onset of puberty and even the imminent arrival of a beloved boy band to her native Toronto, plus a family curse — conspire to turn plucky 13-year-old Mei into…a giant red panda.
The film follows all the adventures that stem from that clever idea, many of them rooted in the wildness of not just turning into, again, a giant red panda, but of being a teenager coming of age and all the outsized emotions and obsessions that accompany that. It’s specific, yes, but it’s also so rooted in genuine human experiences that it can’t help but appeal to a very wide audience.

To mark the launch this weekend on Disney+, we had the pleasure in speaking to the two leading roles Sandra Oh and Rosalie Chiang, and with the director Domee Shi, alongside producer Lindsey Collins.

Following Sunday’s final season premiere of “Killing Eve,” which coincided with her appearance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards where she was a nominee for “The Chair,” Oh walked the red carpet on Tuesday in Hollywood for the debut of Disney-Pixar’s “Turning Red.”
“Look at this, it’s so amazing, I can’t stop looking at it and thinking that it’s real,” Oh told Variety while pointing to the glittering “Turning Red” marquee atop the El Capitan Theatre.
Oh posed outside the Hollywood Blvd. venue with co-star Rosalie Chiang and Grammy-winning superstar Billie Eilish, who, alongside her brother Finneas, contributed original songs to the coming-of-age animated tale. In the movie, Oh voices Ming, mother to the 13-year-old Meilin Lee (Chiang), whose life is turned upside down when she begins to turn into a giant red panda when she displays any excited emotion.

“Turning Red,” Pixar Animation Studio’s 25th feature film, premieres directly on Disney+ on March 11. And in advance of the film’s release, TheWrap was able to screen about a half-hour of footage from the Domee Shi-directed film. While much of the plot remains damnably out-of-reach, the first half-hour establishes the tone and look of “Turning Red” to a remarkable degree. And it’s safe to say that this is one of the most astounding looking (and feeling) Pixar movies yet. Quite frankly, you’ve never seen anything like it, from Pixar or anywhere else for that matter.

Beginning her journey with Pixar eight years ago, as a storyboard artist on The Good Dinosaur, Rosana Sullivan made her directorial debut this year with Kitbull, which on Monday made the Academy’s shortlist for Best Animated Short Film.
Examining a fiercely independent stray kitten and a pit bull, and the unlikely friendship that emerges between them, Kitbull emerged from Sullivan’s desire to capture animals in animation, the way that they actually are. “I love cat videos, as we all do, and I just wanted to draw a kitten being a kitten, because I never saw that done in animation, at least not often. Usually, they’re anthropomorphized, and I just wanted to capture the spirit of a real kitten,” the director tells Deadline. “It then evolved into something about connection and friendship between two outcast characters, because that was something that I had struggled with as a kid.
