Although analog technology has gone all but extinct in the 40 years since Videodrome first permeated viewers’ psyches, there’s no denying the prescience of its themes. Writer-director David Cronenberg, circa 1983, portended the exploitation of the internet age, virtual reality, and media manipulation. At its core, Videodrome confronts the viewer to examine their own relationship with entertainment.
As the head of Civic TV, Max Renn caters to the subterranean market, transmitting sex and violence into Toronto homes over Uhf airwaves. His appetite for depravity no longer fulfilled by the likes of softcore pornography, Max’s interest is piqued by a mysterious pirated broadcast called Videodrome. As he describes it, “It’s just torture and murder. No plot, no characters. Very, very realistic. I think it’s what’s next.”

Sony’s Tom Hanks World War II movie Greyhound is jumping from its May 8 weekend to June 12, as a means to tee off before the Father’s Day weekend of June 19-21. I hear the pic’s rescheduling has nothing to do with coronavirus fears which are weighing on many distribs’ minds, but rather it being an opportune time to capture sons and fathers while also capitalizing on the Flag Day holiday on June 14.
The pic, directed by Aaron Schneider, and also adapted by Hanks from the C.S. Forester novel, follows a Us Navy skipper who must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by Nazi U-boat wolf packs. Elisabeth Shue also stars. Gary Goetzman produces. EPs are Jason Cloth, David Coatsworth, Aaron L. Gilbert, Sanping Han, Michael Jackman, Milan Popelka, Aaron Ryder, Steve Shareshian, and Alex Zhang.

A film adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s classic novel “Fahrenheit 451” is in the works at HBO, according to Variety. Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon are on board to star in the lead roles.
Published in 1953, Bradbury’s dystopian novel is set in a futuristic American city, where people do not read books and firefighters start fires, instead of putting them out. As reported by Variety, Jordan will play Guy Montag, a young fireman who is hired to burn the belongings of those who read outlawed books; but he end up rebelling against his boss and mentor, fire chief Beatty, who will be played by Shannon.

In the world of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, firemen don't put out blazes, they start them, and anyone who reads books is at risk of having their lives consumed in flames. For over a year, a Fahrenheit 451 movie has been in the works at HBO, and now its core cast is starting to come together.
According to multiple sources, including Variety, Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Chronicle) and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals, Bug) are set to star in HBO's Fahrenheit 451 film, which will be directed Ramin Bahrani, who previously worked with Shannon on 99 Homes. Bahrani will also co-write the adaptation with Amir Naderi, while Shannon is set to play Captain Beatty, Montag's superior and mentor at the firehouse.
In addition to starring as the movie's protagonist, Montag (known as Guy Montag in the novel), a "young fireman who forsakes his world, battles his mentor and struggles to regain his humanity,...

The casting news keeps rolling in for HBO's upcoming "Westworld" adaptation as Ed Harris has joined the huge cast to play The Man in Black, described as the distillation of pure villainy into one man. Oh. Hell. Yeah.
Inspired by Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name, the project, which hails from Jj Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, Jerry Weintraub Productions, and Kilter Films, is billed as "a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin."
Harris joins the previously announced James Marsden, Eddie Rouse, Demetrius Grosse, Kyle Bornheimer, Currie Graham, Lena Georgas, Steven Ogg, Timothy Lee DePriest, Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Angela Sarafyan, and Simon Quarterman.
Abrams will executive produce alongside veteran producer Weintraub and Bad Robot's Bryan Burk. "Person of Interest's" Jonathan Nolan, who co-wrote the pilot, will executive produce and direct as well.

HBO is casting a pretty wide net when it comes to filling roles in its upcoming adaptation of "Westworld," as evidenced by this latest word that X-Men franchise star James Marsden plus seven other notable actors have just signed on.
Per THR's The Live Feed, Marsden will play Teddy Flood, a mysterious new arrival to a small frontier town. He quickly proves both his charm - and his talent with a revolver. His pursuit of a local beauty launches him on a dark journey.

Exclusive: HBO has set The Kids Are All Right helmer Lisa Cholodenko to direct and Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins to star in a miniseries adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Elizabeth Strout novel Olive Kitteridge. David Coatsworth is producing. McDormand plays the title character and Jenkins plays her husband, Henry. Getting this cast, director and a four-hour commitment from HBO is a real testament for McDormand. For those true geeks who keep a calendar of the upcoming movies throughout the year, Universal Pictures has some films that you may want to keep your eye out for. I’m the most interested in the first picture above for the 3rd version of The Thing and still wondering if it’ll be able to hold it’s own against the claustrophobia of the classic 1951 original and the shock value of John Carpenter’s 1981 horror film.

For the past 20 years, the winner of the PGA awards has matched the Oscar Best Picture winner including last year's "Slumdog Millionaire."

Summit's battle-hardened "The Hurt Locker" scored another victory Sunday night as it took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures at the 21st annual PGA Awards.
The presentation capped the Producers Guild of America's ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium.
The prize was shared by producers Kathryn Bigelow (who also directed), Mark Boal (the film's screenwriter), Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro. Bigelow thanked the PGA, saying "no other group of filmmakers could so understand the logistical challenges of making a film -- particularly a tough little war film -- in the middle of the summer in the Middle East."
If the producers of the 82nd annual Academy Awards were hoping that the best picture Oscar race would develop some suspense, they have received the scenario they wanted.
"Locker" has picked up numerous critics awards, and two weekends ago it won the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.

Perhaps the biggest surprise with this morning's announcement of the 2010 Producers Guild Nominees is the inclusion of not just Avatar, but the fact both District 9 and Star Trek made their list of ten films vying for the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award.
Along with those three we also have the rest of the Oscar front-runner elite. I have included the complete list below. I'm not sure I would say the winner at the PGA Awards makes for a guaranteed Best Picture winner at the Oscars. Althought the last two Best Picture winners (Slumdog Millionaire and No Country for Old Men) also won the PGA, it's a mixed bag after that with 13 of the 20 Producers Guild winners going on to win the Oscar since 1990.
The complete list of nominees is below and the PGA will announce the winner January 24 in a ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium based on voting by its 4,200 members.
