Matthew Weiner had a very specific process for writing "Mad Men." "At the beginning of each season, Weiner would delineate his vision for that season. This would include, as one might expect, general character arcs and plotlines. The writers were also, however, bombarded with images, poetry, movie scenes, dreams, songs, quotes and on," co-writer Semi Chellas told Cornell Sun.
There was one notable exception to Weiner's all-encompassing vision, an episode that would be considered one of the series' greatest: "The Suitcase," season 4, episode 7. Weiner told Vulture "The Suitcase" was "a special script that was not planned at the beginning of the season," adding:

An adaptation of the novel “We Go Around in the Night and are Consumed by Fire” by “Loaded” producers Hillbilly Films and Television has attached its key creative team.
BAFTA-nominated helmer Georgi Banks-Davies (“I Hate Suzie”) is set to direct the limited drama series, while Clare McQuillan (“Impulse”) is writing. The film deal was brokered by Luke Speed of the Curtis Brown Group on behalf of Alexander Cochran of C&w Agency.
Inspired by graffiti found on an overpass in Manchester, Jules Grant’s debut novel is a queer love story and revenge thriller that provides a little-seen view of British gangland in Manchester, from a female perspective.
Banks-Davies most recently served as the lead director on Sky series “I Hate Suzie,” which is nominated for the best series BAFTA TV Award as well as an emerging talent (fiction) nod for the director. Her additional credits include short drama “Garfield,...

"I never wanted to be in this alone." Elevation Pics from Canada has debuted an official trailer for an indie true story thriller titled American Woman, marking the feature directorial debut of award-winning writer / producer Semi Chellas. Not to be confused with that Sienna Miller disappearance drama from last year also titled American Woman, or the recent TV show also called "American Woman"; this is a different story. Inspired by the headline-dominating kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst in 1974, this atmospheric drama is a fictionalized re-imagining of her time in hiding, from the perspective of Jenny, a political activist assigned to take care of her. Starring Hong Chau as Jenny, with Sarah Gadon, John Gallagher Jr., Lola Kirke, David Cubitt, and Ellen Burstyn. Looks like a rather intriguing film revisiting a real story from history. Here's the official Canadian trailer (+ poster) for Semi Chellas' American Woman, direct from YouTube: Inspired...

Claire McCarthy’s refreshing reimagining of Ophelia grants personal autonomy and vivacity to one of literature’s most recognisable and one-dimensional tragic figures. For the final 20 minutes. Unfortunately, Ophelia is an hour and 46 minutes long. What a tragedy!
Lisa Klein’s Ya novel is the foundation for McCarthy’s Shakespearean story and Rey star Daisy Riley plays the eponymous hero. Fine ingredients for an inspiring teen drama. And this Ophelia certainly has heroic potential – even as a small child – cavorting through Elsinore Castle like she owns the place and speaking up before the royal court, defying the 14th-century diktat that girls should be ornamental rather than opinionated.
Something about the scruffy, cheeky little girl charms Queen Gertrude (Naomi Watts) and she takes the child under her wing, hosing her down and training her up so she may evolve into a lady of the court. By the time Hamlet (George MacKay) encounters her,...

Updated with Sunday figures: In the wake of Terminator: Dark Fate’s failure at the B.O., and Paramount’s recent decision to make Beverly Cops 4 for Netflix, we have the further breakdown of cinema IP in Sony’s Charlie’s Angels reboot, which is tanking with a God-awful $8.6M domestic opening, $27.9M worldwide (from 26 markets), 3 Stars on Screen Engine-Comscore’s PostTrak, and a B+ Cinemascore.
The Elizabeth Banks-directed-written and produced pic is also opening in 27 offshore markets, China being one where it’s also bombing, with a $7.8M 3-day take in third place behind No. 1 local title Somewhere Winter ($13.1M). All of this is primed to further spur a Wtf reaction and anxiety among film development executives in town in regards to what the hell exactly works in this have-and-have-not era of the theatrical marketplace. Over the last few days, many of the upcoming film festivals in the fall have announced which titles will be playing within their respective showcases. Two in question have specifically revealed what they’re packing. The first is the Toronto International Film Festival, while the other is the Venice Film Festival. Interestingly, these revelations actually inform which movies are likely to play at the Telluride Film Festival, and in turn, that helps fill in some possible blanks for the New York Film Festival. Suffice it to say, there are a lot of moving parts right now. Moves are being made, that’s for sure. The highlights of the recent announcements include a number of crossovers, as well as some exclusives. You can see which are which below, but just a sampling of the films include Ad Astra, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Dolemite Is My Name, Ford v Ferrari,...

Same festival, different year. While this year’s Venice Film Festival includes a marked uptick in competition films directed by women, that’s only the case because last year’s numbers were so dismal: 2019 will host two competition titles directed by women, up from just one title last year. And while artistic director Alberto Barbera was eager to trot out excuses like “not enough women make movies,” he also landed on another reason why this year remains dominated by male filmmakers: Now they make movies about women, too.
At a press conference held this morning to unveil the year’s slate, Variety reports that Barbera told the assembled press, “Women directors are unfortunately still a minority. But these portraits of women, even when they are directed by men, reveal a new sensibility geared towards the feminine universe, as had rarely happened in the past. This is a signal that perhaps...

We’ve had “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” and “Fortinbras Gets Drunk,” and now there’s “Ophelia,” an intelligent and gorgeous spin on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” from the point of view of the melancholy prince’s beloved.
“Hamlet” of course has its share of memorable characters — recall the bit player who claimed that the play was about a grave digger who meets a prince — but this provocative adaptation of Lisa Klein’s novel gives an oft-maligned character purpose and agency. It is not betrayal and madness that bewitches this Ophelia but toxic masculinity.
Director Claire McCarthy (“The Waiting City”) and adapter Semi Chellas (“Mad Men”) give us an Elsinore Castle and its court that’s as handsomely mounted as any number of straightforward Shakespearean adaptations, but they cleverly tweak the proceedings to make us reexamine key moments from an entirely different angle.

Daisy Ridley's Ophelia reimagines Hamlet as a parable for today, and turns a great tragedy into a disappointing soap opera.

To be or not to be. That is the question that has fascinated and bedeviled centuries of theatergoers and one eternally waffling prince. It is also the conundrum faced by any attempts to reinterpret or revisit William Shakespeare’s hallowed Hamlet text from a different vantage. Set in the medieval—if a stage director is so inclined—Danish castle of Elsinore, Hamlet’s great halls are populated by a dozen ambiguous and mostly tragic players. None more so than Ophelia. The doomed waif of generations of male writers’ admiring pity, she is almost always cast as the poor dear driven to madness and suicide due to the vacillating whims of a poor excuse for a hero. It’s a beautiful role derived from a different time and different set of values.

We tend to think of the Patty Hearst affair as a chain of galvanic events, because that’s what a lot of it was. The kidnapping itself, on Feb. 4, 1974. The weeks that Hearst spent in a closet, blindfolded, subjected to death threats, which wound up (intentionally or not) as the psychological trigger for her indoctrination. Her announcement, two months after being abducted, that she had joined her captors in the Symbionese Liberation Army and had renamed herself “Tania” (a nod to the comrade of Che Guevara). The surveillance-camera recording, from April 15, 1974, of her participation in the robbery of a Hibernia Bank in San Francisco — the incident that gave us the beret-and-machine-gun radical-chic image that defines Hearst to this day. The breathless, shocked, wall-to-wall news coverage that made this the first of the contempo gonzo media juggernauts.

The Tribeca Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday with a slate of movies from up-and-coming filmmakers and established directors that tackle hot-button issues such as gun violence, homophobia, and gender discrimination.
The annual celebration of film was originally founded by Robert De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal to encourage people to return to a corner of Manhattan that was still reeling from the 9/11 attacks. Well, downtown is largely rebuilt, but the festival is still going strong, with a particular emphasis on inclusion and representation. Of the more than 100 features that will debut at this edition of Tribeca, 40% are directed by women, 29% by people of color and 13% by Lgbtq filmmakers.
Now in its 18th year, Tribeca has grown to encompass television series, shorts, gaming, and virtual reality. But it’s the indie movies that provide the biggest sizzle. Here’s a look at nine acquisition titles that could have buyers circling.

Now in its eighteenth year, New York City’s own Tribeca Film Festival kicks off every spring with a wide variety of programming, from an ever-expanding Vr installation to an enviable television lineup, but the bulk of the annual festival’s programming is movies. This year’s festival offers up plenty of familiar faces with new projects alongside newcomers. While Tribeca’s wide-ranging conversation programs and reunion events tend to dominate the schedule, the festival also offers a robust selection of documentary and narrative features worth the trip downtown.
This year, the program has reached a new milestone: gender parity across its three competition sections. Fifty-two narratives and 51 documentaries will debut throughout the 12-day festival. The competition section features 12 documentaries, 10 U.S. narratives, and 10 international narratives. The event will also host 15 spotlight narratives, 16 spotlight documentaries, as well as five Midnight features, and 17 Viewpoints selections.

Creator Matthew Weiner goes back to the well in a new episode of Amazon's The Romanoffs.

The Romanoffs Episode 4
Is Matthew Weiner obsessed with affairs? Between his former show, Mad Men, and his current offering, Amazon’s frustratingly indulgent The Romanoffs, extramarital affairs have featured as a prominent narrative crutch. The plot point has become so repeated for a Weiner piece that I’m starting to wonder if the writer/director is capable of creating tension that extends further than “will X character find out that Y character slept with Z character?”
We’re back doing the same song and dance, returning to midtown Manhattan for the Romanoffs’ fourth installment, “Expectations,” but this time with some added paternity ambiguity to attempt to make things fresh. Production company Level Forward has set what it calls a gun-neutral initiative to offset the portrayal of guns on screens with a commitment to destroy 10 firearms for every one that is featured in any of its productions.
The initiative kicks off with Killer Films’ “American Woman,” which marks the feature directorial debut of “Mad Men” alum Semi Chellas. For the 69 guns featured on screen in that pic, 690 will be destroyed, Level Forward founders Adrienne Becker and Abigail Disney announced Thursday. The initiative also calls for Level Forward to invest in arts programs for youths in communities affected by gun violence.
The goal is to help counteract what is often seen as the glamorization of guns in popular entertainment. Level Forward will make the gun neutral initiative a line item in every production. The company pledges to invest $15 per prop gun used in the production.

“More royal, more problems,” seems to be the motto the characters at the center of Matthew Weiner’s “The Romanoffs” are living by.
In the latest trailer for the upcoming Amazon Prime anthology series, a slew of people believe themselves to be descendants of the famous Russian royal family — including Diane Lane, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Amanda Peet, and Kathryn Hahn. And these souls find themselves in the middle of (possibly self-inflicted) drama due to their lineage.
“Michael, there are so many people out there with your background and I guess they’re proud, but they’re really f—ed up,” one character says to another in a voiceover. Another (possible) Romanoff laments: “Boy, you’d think that royal blood dilutes over time, but the poison survives.”

If we (and we do mean the royal we) weren’t excited for “The Romanoffs” before, we certainly are now, as Amazon has released a batch of first look photos and the Season 1 episode lineup for Matthew Weiner’s new anthology series.
The shot at the top of the page and the first one below are from Episode 102 (‘The Royal We”), which will star Corey Stoll, Kerry Bishé, Janet Montgomery and Noah Wyle. That story centers around a married couple in a rut, faced with their own temptations.
The following two shots are from the premiere episode, “The Violet Hour,” starring Aaron Eckhart, Marthe Keller, Inès Melab and Louise Bourgoin. Here’s Amazon’s description for that one: Set in Paris, an ancestral home holds the key to a family’s future.

Just as Time’s Up heats up comes Claire McCarthy’s Ophelia, a great twist on a Shakespearean classic, specifically Hamlet. Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s Daisy Ridley stars as Hamlet’s g.f. in a film that’s told from her perspective, and yes, it is wonderfully, and intentionally, subversive without giving too much away. Director Claire McCarthy (“The Waiting City”) and adapter Semi Chellas (“Mad...

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, Amazon quickly put a halt to an untitled Weinstein Co. project from David O. Russell. Another Weinstein project, “The Romanoffs,” continued without the now-embattled production company.
Now “The Romanoffs” creator Matthew Weiner faces a sexual harassment allegation. In an article for The Information, former “Mad Men” writer Kater Gordon said Weiner, who created the critically acclaimed AMC series, told her one night while working on a script that “he said she owed it to him to let him see her naked.”
A spokesperson for Weiner said, “He does not remember saying this comment nor does it reflect a comment he would say to any colleague.” Amazon did not return a request for comment.
