Joe Camp, the creator, director and writer of the “Benji” films, died March 15. He was 84.
Camp died Friday morning at his home in Bell Buckle, Tenn., following a battle with illness, according to his son, filmmaker and writer of the 2018 “Benji” reboot, Brandon Camp.
Camp had nearly no Hollywood experience before he raised $500,000 to make the first “Benji” film, a family movie about a lovable mutt who saves a pair of children from kidnappers. Higgins the dog, who previously appeared on the CBS sitcom “Petticoat Junction,” came out of retirement to star in the titular role.
After having no luck acquiring distribution, Camp formed his own distribution company Mulberry Square Releasing in 1974 to distribute the film himself. “Benji” would go on to gross almost $40 million ($250 million after inflation).
Camp would follow up the original with “For the Love of Benji” in 1977 and “Oh! Heavenly Dog” in 1980, which starred Chevy Chase...

Joe Camp, who wrote, produced and directed a series of films and TV shows that elevated a pooch stage-named Benji to Hollywood’s canine pantheon alongside Lassie and Rin Tin Tin, died today at his Tennessee home. He was 84.
His death was announced by his son, the director Brandon Camp, who told Deadline that his father died after a prolonged illness at his home in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, surrounded by family.
In addition to the long-lasting Benji franchise that began in 1974 and would continue well into the 21st Century, Camp co-wrote and directed Hawmps!, the 1976 Western comedy that replaced horses with camels, and 1979’s The Double McGuffin, a mystery film starring Ernest Borgnine and George Kennedy.
While he also wrote a series of books about horses, including the popular The Soul of a Horse and Why Horses Are Barefoot, Camp’s most enduring contribution to Hollywood was and remains the...

Fifty years ago, every studio told Joe Camp — who died Friday after a long illness — he was barking up the wrong tree with Benji.
While working in advertising, the Texas-based Camp dreamed of telling a Lassie-like story from the dog’s point of view, and so he penned a script about a beloved stray pooch attempting to rescue two kidnapped children. Naming the film after his own dog, Camp secured independent financing and helmed the project himself.
“He screened it for every single studio, and each one passed,” recalls Camp’s son, filmmaker Brandon Camp, to The Hollywood Reporter. “They all said, ‘No one is interested in this movie.’ ”
Without a distributor, Joe Camp formed Mulberry Square Productions with Ed Vanston to release the film, which starred Peter Breck, Patsy Garrett and mixed-breed canine Higgins. They managed to book Benji at a single Dallas theater in 1974, and more locations followed as word-of-mouth grew.

Joe Camp, the writer, director and producer who taught that old dog Hollywood new tricks about animal movies as the creative force behind the 1974 franchise-spawning Benji, has died. He was 84.
Camp died Friday morning at his home in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, following a long illness, his son, filmmaker Brandon Camp, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Camp also directed and co-wrote the comedies Hawmps! (1976), about the U.S. Cavalry replacing horses with camels in the 1850s, and The Double McGuffin (1979), which revolved around kids trying to thwart a terrorist (Ernest Borgnine) and featured lots of in-jokes about Hitchcock movies.
Other than serving as an extra on the Robert Mitchum-starring Home From the Hill (1960), Camp had no Hollywood experience when he raised about $500,000 to make Benji, a story about a stray mixed breed — not a fancy pure breed like Lassie! — who helps rescue two youngsters from kidnappers.

Netflix’s Italian arm is hunting for anti-heroes.
During a session here at Mia Market in Rome, Netflix Vice President of Italian Originals Eleanora ‘Tinny’ Andreatta said Italy had been traditionally starved of characters from the “imperfect hero to the rough hero” and wanted more of these tropes in her local programs.
Appearing alongside Netflix Emea chief Larry Tanz, she pointed to Everything Calls for Salvation, a drama about a troubled young man who is forced to spend a week in a mental hospital, only to find friendship and love from his fellow patients.
It’s loosely based on Daniele Mencarelli’s novel of the same name and directed by Francesco Bruni, and launches on Netflix tomorrow globally. Audiences members in Italy seemed enthused by a trailer of the show, which has hints of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Jimmie Allen held a lot of odd jobs before achieving his country music breakthrough with his debut single “Best Shot” last fall: middle school janitor, busboy, protein shake barista at a Nashville gym, season 10 “American Idol” contestant.
All of Allen’s career ups and downs helped shape the stories on his debut album for Stoney Creek Records, “Mercury Lane,” which features many co-writes from the singer as well as a stirring cover of co-manager Ash Bowers’ song “Boy Gets a Truck,” whose new Ford-sponsored music video debuted this week.
The latter song caught the attention of Ford and brand-partnerships platform Music Audience Exchange, who recently paired other country acts like Thomas Rhett with Ford F-150, Kane Brown with Dr. Pepper and U.S. Cellular with Dustin Lynch for original video campaigns that air via paid-marketing on YouTube, Facebook, Pandora and many other high-traffic sites.

The Writers Guild of America has called off negotiations with the Association of Talent Agents in favor of pursuing individual talks with nine top agencies as it enforces a total ban on packaging fees and affiliated production for agents representing guild members.
WGA West president David Goodman announced the guild’s decision to reject the Ata’s most recent revenue-sharing offer in a 16-minute video posted late Wednesday on the WGA West website. Goodman said the offer made June 7 by the Ata in the sides’ first meeting in two months did not solve the guild’s fundamental objection to what it sees as a conflict of interest in agencies receiving packaging fees from production entities.
“Revenue-sharing does nothing to incentivize your agency to get you a penny more in salary,” Goodman said in the video. “It does nothing to address the real problem.”

With the Writers Guild of America locked in a bitter standoff with Hollywood agents, three high-profile screenwriters have slammed the severity of the WGA’s tactics.
The letter, addressed to WGA leaders, was written by Brandon Camp, Peter Landesman and Phyllis Nagy. The WGA and the Association of Talent Agents saw talks crater on April 12 over efforts to revamp the 43-year-old rules governing how agents represent WGA members. No new talks are scheduled.
“We are writing to you because we are torn,” Camp, Landesman and Nagy said. “On the one hand, we agree TV packaging has gotten out of hand. On the other, we have serious qualms about the Guild’s tactics in righting this situation. Its methodology has seemed belligerent at times. Meanwhile, leadership’s tone toward its own members has seemed outright threatening, especially toward those who have chosen to dissent from the path you are on.”

WGA leaders David Goodman and Chris Keyser have this week explained for Deadline readers the guild’s position driving its quest to eradicate Big 4 agency packaging and affiliated production companies. That doesn’t mean there aren’t working writers who believe that the strong point that has been made should be followed by a return to the bargaining table to find a compromise.
Deadline has heard there have been dozens of letters, emails and phone calls made and sent to leadership by working writers, some of whom have told us their hope is not to undermine the guild, but to create a course correction that leads to a resolution. Deadline was slipped one such letter, written by TV/film writer Brandon Camp (Dragonfly), film & TV writer-director Peter Landesman (Concussion), and film/TV writer Phyllis Nagy (Carol). After six years (or 42, from the point of view of its canine star), Brandon Camp’s Benji reboot has finally started filming. Camp—the son of Joe Camp, who directed the 1974 original—has assembled a cast that includes The Purge: Anarchy’s Kiele Sanchez, Gabriel Bateman, Darby Camp, Will Rothhaar, Angus Sampson, Jerod Haynes, and, presumably, a pretty adorable dog.
Less authoritarian than Rin Tin Tin, more approachable than the haughtily aristocratic Lassie, Benji has traditionally been portrayed by scruffy mutts in his on-screen roles. The new Benji was apparently found in a Humane Society after being abandoned in a supermarket parking lot; now he’s on-set in New Orleans, working to foil kidnappings and bring the franchise back after a 12-year hiatus.

Yes Blumhouse, the microbudget studio responsible for "Paranormal Activity," "Insidious," "The Purge," and "Sinister" franchises, is behind the project which will allow Brandon free creative rein on the film just like his father when he created the original 1970s films and series outside the studio system.
Described as a modern retelling of the dog tale with a newly rescued new Benji, the film will follow the pooch with an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time, usually to help someone overcome a problem.

Yes, you read that right. The uplifting self-help series Chicken Soup For The Soul is getting a big screen adaptation, courtesy of Alcon Entertainment (the same people behind The Blind Side). The company also has plans for a TV series, though that seems further in the future.
Chicken Soup For The Soul takes the form of uplifting stories for those in need of some solace, some motivation or just some good feels. The original bestseller was published back 1993 and shot to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Now books continue to roll out, many of them dedicated to particular demographics (Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul, Chicken Soup For The Preteen Soul, Chicken Soup For The Grandparent’s Soul, etc.) The series remains wildly popular, so really it’s surprising that there hasn’t been a big screen adaptation until now.

A Chicken Soup For The Soul movie is in the works.
Alcon Entertainment recently acquired the feature rights to the inspirational book series, a collection of short motivational stories and essays.
Chicken Soup For The Soul will be produced by Jordan Kerner (The Smurfs) of the Kerner Entertainment Company, Alcon announced in a press release.
Alcon co-founders Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are also slated to produce.
Johnson and Kosove referred to the book series as "synonymous with inspiration and life improvement and has touched hundreds of millions of readers through the power of storytelling".
"The Chicken Soup for the Soul series lends itself perfectly to a fictional narrative that will inspire, entertain and intrigue," they added.
Brandon Camp (Love Happens) has been tapped to write the screenplay.
Chicken Soup for the Soul comes from original creators Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen in 1993.

You can blame New Line for this. Back in 2009 the studio wrestled the self-help book He's Just Not That Into You into a relationship drama. That non-fiction, non-narrative-tome-into-fictional-story trajectory subsequently gave us Alcon's What To Expect When You're Expecting (from the pregnancy manual), and that same company now has big plans for the touchy-feely Chicken Soup For The Soul franchise. Brandon Camp (Love Happens) is the lucky recipient of the screenplay gig.The original Chicken Soup For The Soul first graced bookshelves in 1993, and was so named for its alleged warming and nourishing qualities. A collection of motivational essays and inspirational stories, it was compiled by self-help gurus Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. They did rather well out of it. It sold in its millions and sparked a series of juggernaut follow-ups and spin-offs, which included Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul (multiple volumes), Chicken Soup For The Mother's Soul,...

Some great Lovecraftian horror has emerged from the blackest depths of the deepest oceans, and slowly it makes its way towards our shores. With a ponderous and slow gait it urges forward, little by little, until all life and civilization is extinguished by fear and despair beyond human comprehension. Its name: Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Movie. It probably won’t be a death knell for humankind (although you never know), but Alcon Entertainment has indeed secured the rights for both a Chicken Soup for the Soul movie and TV show. For now, the only concrete plans involve the film. Deadline Hollywood reports that Brandon Camp, writer of Love Happens, will be handling the screenplay duties, while Jordan Kerner of the Kerner Entertainment Company will be producing alongside Alcon. Kerner’s previous credits include both The Smurfs and The Smurfs 2, while Alcon was behind the similarly sappy The Blind Side. No...

The Chicken Soup For The Soul series has produced over 200 book titles, but now it's apparently ready to cross mediums. Alcon Entertainment, the studio behind films like Dolphin Tale, and The Blind Side, is now planning on producing adaptations of the long-running self-help books for both film and television. For the movie, The Hollywood Reporter says that Brandon Camp, the director and co-writer of the 2009 Jennifer Aniston/Aaron Eckhart romantic drama Love Happens, has been hired to pen the script. While it still seems strange that a self-help book could be inspiration for a movie, the fact of the matter is that we've already seen it happen three other times. First director Ken Kwapis adapted Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo's He's Just Not That Into You; then Tim Story brought Steve Harvey's Think Like A Man to the big screen; and then most recently director Kirk Jones made...

We've had Uggie, now the search is on to find the new Benji. Got a cute dog? You could be barking all the way to the bank
It doesn't take a genius to see that dogs are huge right now. Without question, the runaway star of The Artist was 10-year-old jack russell Uggie, while Pudsey – the canine winner of this year's Britain's Got Talent – is rumoured to be in talks with Disney about appearing in a film of his own. If you're after a fast buck, and have always yearned to live out your Hollywood dreams vicariously through an animal that drinks out of the toilet, you could do a lot worse than get a dog.
And if it happens look like Benji, all the better. You remember Benji. He was the Pepsi to Lassie's Coca-Cola – a small mixed-breed mutt with a lovable demeanour and an inexplicable propensity for helping strangers.

His last shot at science fiction, I Am Number Four, may not quite have taken off at the box office the way he would have liked, but that’s not stopping DJ Caruso from looking to add another high concept film to his stockpile of possible projects: he’s in talks to direct Invertigo for Sony. When we saw the title, we thought it might be some take on Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, which conjured visions of the enraged filmmaker’s ghost trying to throttle Caruso for messing with his work again after the less-than-subtle nods to Rear Window in Disturbia. But no, this is in fact a big budget movie written by Transformers: Dark Of The Moon scribe Ehren Kruger, alongside Brandon Camp, about a Nasa satellite crashing in New York and creating something called a reverse-g vortex which means that gravity is reversed and the whole planet is in danger.
