"Fried Green Tomatoes" is memorable for the way that it effectively balances comedy and drama with a large ensemble cast and dual story lines. I like films best when they cover large time frames and many characters. It makes movies feel so alive, like real stories.
The modern story with Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy confronts many issues of age and feelings of uselessness, whereas the story with Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker covers issues of youth, marriage, and repressed emotions. All four actresses do superb jobs, and are a joy to watch.
Director Jon Avnet has proved himself to be a good with ensemble drama (The War, Uprising). He holds the picture together with commendable talent I might have expected from the great epic directors of years past.
Recommended for fans of "Forrest Gump", "Driving Miss Daisy", and "Dolores Claiborne".
