It's not a controversial statement to say that Zack Snyder can be a polarizing filmmaker. His fans will defend him until they're blue in the face, while his detractors will liken him to cinematic cancer. Me? I'm more of a Snyder agnostic. I like some of his movies, I dislike others. But there's one positive thing I can say for sure: the man knows how to craft an image. Like many filmmakers of his generation, Snyder got his start in music videos, and that taught him how to create memorable, evocative imagery that looks, for lack of a better word, cool.
"Cool" seems to be Snyder's approach to his visuals in general — and you know what? He frequently succeeds. Even if you don't like the Snyder film you're watching, there's a good chance it'll still be loaded with cool images. Because of Snyder's penchant for visual fireworks, his movies often lend themselves to great trailers.

Zack Snyder wishes he could do a new version of 'Sucker Punch'.The filmmaker wasn't satisfied with the final cut of the 2011 psychological fantasy action film, based on an original concept, which starred Emily Browning as Babydoll, a young woman who flees a mental institution and ends up in an alternate reality where patients are sex slaves, and Synder admitted it's the only movie of his career that he would like to change. He told Empire magazine: “The only movie I would change is ‘Sucker Punch,’ because it never really got finished correctly.“Even the director’s cut is not really the correct cut. It’s really just an extended version. If I had the chance, I would fix that movie.”Although he'd like to revisit the flick, he admits there are some legal issues preventing him from doing so.He explained: “I have the footage already shot: they just...

Take any random film directed by Zack Snyder, and hordes of his fans will probably argue that the theatrical ‘cut’ falls short of capturing the true brilliance of the director. From the much-discussed Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) to the director’s extended take on Watchmen (2009), the director’s cuts are arguably even more beloved than the theatrical versions.
Although he is now able to release his favorite versions of most of his films thanks to his devoted fan base, Snyder still has one more film he’d like to try. According to Snyder, who recently spoke with Empire, he is still not satisfied with the way his 2011 flick Sucker Punch turned out, and thus, he still wants to “fix” it. Well, it seems fans might need to exercise some patience.

Pick a Zack Snyder movie at random and you’re likely to find legions of the director’s fans claiming that the theatrical cut doesn’t represent the film’s true brilliance. From his extended take on “Watchmen” to the endlessly discussed “Snyder Cut” of “Justice League” that Warner Bros. allowed him to complete after years of online fan pressure, the director is arguably more loved for his director’s cuts than the movies that actually play in theaters.
But while Snyder’s passionate fan base has afforded him the freedom to release his preferred versions of most of his films at this point, there’s still one that he’d like another crack at. In a new interview with Empire, Snyder explained that he still isn’t satisfied with how his critically maligned 2011 blockbuster “Sucker Punch” turned out and hopes to release another version someday.

You know that famous quote commonly attributed to Alexander the Great about how he wept when there were no more worlds to conquer? We're starting to think that Zack Snyder feels much the same way, except that his version of conquering the world is more about finding ways to re-release his movies with extra footage attached at all costs.
To be fair, this isn't exactly a new phenomenon for Snyder. His 2004 "Dawn of the Dead" reboot eventually led to an unrated cut down the line and his comic book movie "Watchmen" ended up with several different versions post-release. He pulled the same trick once again with both "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and, most infamously, his "Zack Snyder's Justice League" experiment that resulted in a completely different movie altogether compared to the theatrical cut. He's planning on returning to the exact same well with his two-part "Rebel Moon" epic...

Zack Snyder loves a director’s cut. Most of his movies have received some manner of alternate cut over the years, but there’s still one project he’d like to make a proper director’s cut of — Sucker Punch.
Sucker Punch didn’t receive the best reviews upon release in 2011, but Snyder told Empire that he’d love to “fix” the movie if given the chance. “The only movie I would change is Sucker Punch, because it never really got finished correctly,” Snyder said. “Even the director’s cut is not really the correct cut. It’s really just an extended version. If I had the chance, I would fix that movie.”
Related Zack Snyder talks about why a director’s cut of Sucker Punch is unlikely
Snyder added that he already has everything he requires to assemble a director’s cut of Sucker Punch; all he needs is permission.

Movie lovers will know that Zack Snyder is a very specific director. In most cases, you either love his vision of a movie or you hate it completely. There is rarely something in between. But he is also a very specific director because, at times, you can hate one version of his movie and love the other. This is because he rarely has just one version of a movie. Remember how Watchmen ultimately had three cuts? The controversial Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had two, while Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a phenomenon in itself. Rebel Moon is also set to have a Director’s Cut (both parts), so Snyder really is a phenomenon in that aspect.
Recently, while talking to Empire, Snyder discussed one of his early flops and revealed that he would like to have another go at it, i.e., that he would like to...

There’s rarely just one version of a Zack Snyder film. His Watchmen adaptation arrived in various cuts – theatrical, director’s, ultimate. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice has its Ultimate Edition. The Snyder Cut campaign brought the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, while his Rebel Moon films at Netflix will later receive extended, all-out, R-rated versions too. And while his 2011 original fantasy-actioner Sucker Punch technically has an extended edition already, the filmmaker has unfinished business with that film – with something much closer to a full-on director’s cut in mind.
In a major new Empire interview, Zack Snyder answered your reader questions, on movies from across his career (and plenty of other topics aside). And when asked what, if anything, he’d want to change about one of his movies, he gave a broader answer: there’s one movie he actively wants to change in a bigger way.

Lysette is excellent as a young woman returning home to care for her dying mother in Andrea Pallaoro’s intelligently crafted film
A mysterious miracle is at the heart of this absorbing and superbly acted film from the Italian director Andrea Pallaoro, which refuses the cliched “issue movie” beats of confrontation, catharsis and resolution. Like his previous work Hannah, which starred Charlotte Rampling as the haunted, troubled woman of that name, Monica is marked by its cool compositional rigour: scenes from a life are evoked with studied, often wordless vignettes and middle-distance shots from fixed camera positions, combined occasionally with looming, asymmetrical closeups.
Trans performer Trace Lysette plays Monica, who has an income from sex work and who, perhaps for professional reasons, has cultivated a coolly resonant, pleasingly modulated voice, which nonetheless rises to anger in various phone conversations of which we hear just one side: conversations with her partner...

For the past decade-and-a-half, cinematographer Sean Price Williams has been a staple of the New York indie-film scene, lensing features for (naming just a handful) the Safdie brothers, Alex Ross Perry, Michael Almereyda, Robert Greene.
The Sweet East finds Williams moving to the director’s chair with a script from film critic Nick Pinkerton. Deliberately provocative and very funny, The Sweet East begins with a Pizzagate sequence that separates high-schooler Lillian from her classmates in D.C. From there she drifts throughout the Northeast, mingling with a cast of outsiders who all take a special, often sexual interest in her, among them a disorganized band of Antifa-esque punks, an over-eager filmmaking duo (Ayo Edebiri and playwright Jeremy O. Harris), and closeted Neo-Nazi academic Lawrence (Simon Rex).

Before Zack Snyder turned his sights to the DC Universe, he gave us Sucker Punch, a psychological fantasy action movie that was his first film based on an original concept. While the film was a box office and critical disappointment, it has developed a cult following over the years who have grown to appreciate the over-the-top fantasy, but Snyder believes he didn’t go far enough.
“Sucker Punch is probably the most obvious example of straightforward, pure satire that I’ve made,” Zack Snyder told Total Film. “And I still think I didn’t go far enough, because a lot of people thought that it was just a movie about scantily clad girls dancing around in a brothel. I’m like, ‘Really? Did you see Watchmen? That film is completely a superhero deconstruction from the drop, which is all Alan Moore. That’s the thing I’ve found really interesting and motivating throughout my career.

FX released the official trailer for “American Horror Stories” Season 3, the spin-off of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series “American Horror Story.” The spin-off features a different horror story in each episode.
The trailer revealed that “Real Housewives” alum Lisa Rinna will star in the “Tapeworm” episode of Season 3, which premieres Oct. 26. The official logline for that installment reads, “An up-and-coming model will stop at nothing in her hunger for success.” The episode was written by Joe Baken and directed by Alexis Martin Woodall.
“Smize for the camera, sweetie,” Rinna’s character says in the trailer. She later responds to a young patient’s concern about a monster inside of her with the question, “But are you hungry?”
Alongside Rinna, the “Tapeworm” cast includes Laura Kariuki, Hazel Graye and Rob Yang.
From the trailer, it looks like Yang prescribes Kariuki’s model a tapeworm to help her lose weight for her modeling career.

Zack Snyder’s surreal film Sucker Punch has had an extended Blu-ray version released. But the director has raised fanboy and fangirl hopes by stating in a recent interview that we ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
The Blu-ray added 18 minutes to the theatrical version, but Snyder has stated that it wasn’t his version and there are still a lot of things viewers haven’t been able to enjoy from the film.
As with his much-clamored-for director’s cut on Justice League, fans hold out hope that someday, they may get the complete vision.
Sucker Punch is a sci-fi adventure centered on Babydoll, a young girl who’s locked in a mental hospital. In an attempt to get away from her awful reality, she imagines an alternate world. But from there, she imagines multiple other realities, leading to a deep ending.
It’s been almost 10 years since the film came out.

While fans wait for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon to touch down on Netflix, Letterboxd is going one-on-one with the filmmaker about Sucker Punch, a divisive action fantasy epic often raked across the coals by film buffs. Sucker Punch was Snyder’s first original concept to hit screens after Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen helped put the fan-favorite director on the map. Sucker Punch stars Emily Browning as Babydoll, a young woman committed to a mental institution. Throughout the film, Babydoll and her fellow patients execute an elaborate escape while acting out the plan in a series of dream-like sequences.
Speaking with Letterboxd (via Variety) about Sucker Punch, Snyder admits to the film being one of his most controversial works, saying, “It was a very polarizing film,” Snyder said. “To be frank, the people I’ve run across who’ve come to me and said ‘” Sucker Punch” is...

Zack Snyder recently joined the IFC Center (via Letterboxd) for an interview about “Sucker Punch,” his hugely divisive 2011 fantasy action movie that was a box office bomb for Warner Bros. with just $89 million grossed worldwide. The film, which was notable at the time for being Snyder’s first original concept, stars Emily Browning as Babydoll, a young woman committed to a mental institution whose fantastical imagination creates a dream heist for her to escape imprisonment. Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac co-starred.
“It was a very polarizing film,” Snyder said. “To be frank, the people I’ve run across who’ve come to me and said ‘”Sucker Punch” is my favorite movie’ are normally angsty teenage girls. It’s like a Morrissey song or something.”
Snyder revealed he still hopes to release a director’s cut for the movie in the future, saying,...

In this peak TV era, there are simply too many shows on the air.
While there's more selection than ever, the caveat is that many shows are criminally underrated.
We've compiled a list of the shows we think deserve far more recognition.
Scroll down to get up to speed, TV Fanatics.
1. Class of '07 - Prime Video Not to be confused with the terrible Class of '09. This Prime Video comedy with a post-apocalyptic twist boasts an excellent cast, including Caitlin Stasey, Emily Browning, and Megan Smart. The world is ending thanks to an apocalyptic tidal wave and a group of women seek shelter at their high school campus. It's a lot of fun. 2. For All Mankind - Apple TV+ For All Mankind takes place in an alternate timeline in which Alexei Arkhipovich Leonov is the first human to land on the moon. The series follows the people who work...

Hopefully, those May flowers will start blooming soon after the many April (and previous months’) showers. But whatever the weather, Netflix has a solid selection of new movies to watch this month.
Netflix’s May lineup has several bright and joyful animated films as well as more serious stories with light at the end of the tunnel. Tom Hanks’ latest theatrical release “A Man Called Otto” arrives on the streaming service, adapted from Frederick Backman’s book “A Man Called Ove” and following the story of a grumpy old man who struggles to find purpose in life after the death of his wife.
Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Croods” and “The Tale of Desperaux” which teach lessons of bravery in their own ways. For those in the mood for slightly quirkier stories, Jason Moore’s “Pitch Perfect” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” should do the trick.

Trace Lysette is in a hotel room on 8th Street in New York City when she jumps on a Zoom video call with Variety to talk about her new movie, “Monica.”
In just a couple of hours, she’s set to walk the red carpet at the indie drama’s premiere at the IFC Center.
“I used to turn tricks a few blocks from there,” Lysette says.
Like so many trans women, Lysette once turned to sex work as a means of survival. “I was a young person alone in New York doing God knows what to survive,” says Lysette, who was raised in Ohio. “Last night we had a screening at The [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community] Center here. That was so heavy for me because I got my gender identity therapy there 20 years ago.”

Patricia Clarkson is no stranger to playing a mother in turmoil.
She earned an Oscar nomination for her performance as a woman perhaps oxymoronically named Joy and dealing with breast cancer in “Pieces of April” (2003). On the small screen, she earned an Emmy nomination for portraying Adora, a bitterly faded Southern belle with Munchausen by proxy syndrome in “Sharp Objects” (2018). Now, in director/co-writer Andrea Pallaoro’s “Monica,” she plays Eugenia, a Midwestern mother dying of brain cancer and now getting reacquainted as best she can with her estranged daughter (Trace Lysette), who is trans.
In “Pieces of April,” “I was a very present, very feisty woman. [With ‘Monica’], I’m considerably older. I’m 20 years older. She really is on borrowed time,” Clarkson said in a recent interview with IndieWire. As for preparing to play a woman physically and psychologically succumbing to the terminal illness, she added, “I’ll tell you this: the preparation,...

Andrea Pallaoro’s Monica bursts out of the gate with a shot that announces its distinctive style: a protracted close-up of the eponymous character (Trace Lysette) in a tanning bed, throbbing music playing in the background. Before a word is even uttered, Pallaoro’s film, which was shot in full frame, articulates how stifled Monica is by the world. But the observational nature of the shot also signals Pallaoro’s approach to the narrative, as Monica’s painterly compositions and intricate blocking invite viewers to study the body language of its reticent characters in order to understand them and their mysterious pasts.
On the surface, the film follows Monica, a trans woman, as she returns home after a very long absence in order to reconnect with her estranged and dying mother, Eugenia (Patricia Clarkson), who had disowned Monica for, generally speaking, failing to accept her sexuality. But Pallaoro and co-writer...

Before the SnyderVerse, Zack Snyder was one of Warner Bros’ most prominent directors, with him having helmed the wildly successful 300 and Watchmen. While the latter of these two movies didn’t set the world on fire in terms of box office, it still did perfectly decent business, and for his follow-up, Snyder was given a lot of latitude to make what would be his first film based on an original concept, Sucker Punch. The story of a group of female mental patients who enter a fantasy world, the film was met with pretty dismal box office by Snyder’s standards. Critics had a field day with his fantasy epic, and fans mostly dismissed it as a weaker effort for the director.
While Sucker Punch was quickly forgotten once Snyder made Man of Steel and launched his ill-fated DC SnyderVerse, the movie has eked out a bit of a following...

Twenty years ago today, Ghost Ship sailed into theaters and unleashed an unforgettable opening sequence that instantly entered the annals of all-time great cold opens. The stylish introduction ends with an unexpected shock and an insanely high body count. Perhaps it was a bit too effective; that high kill count quickly slows down once Ghost Ship jumps ahead to the present.
No matter the film that followed, this cold open deserves its place among horror’s best opening sequences.
The Steve Beck-directed horror movie was the third release under the genre label Dark Castle Entertainment and his sophomore feature follow-up to 2001’s Th13teen Ghosts. Released in theaters on October 25, 2002, Ghost Ship followed a salvage crew seeking riches from a long-missing Italian cruise ship, the Ms Antonia Graza, only to discover its haunted past shortly after boarding.
The cold open teases some harrowing events that led to the ocean liner’s disappearance forty years ago.

It's that time of the month when you're about to find out which movies and television shows you've had stockpiled in your watchlist are about to expire. No worries. It happens to the best of us. We live in an era where there's way too much to watch that some will inevitably slip through the cracks. But if you were hoping to catch a few of them before they're gone or off to a different streaming service, then it's not too late!
Everything I have listed here won't be leaving Netflix until the start of November, with some leaving right as the post-Halloween period begins. An interesting thing to note is the disappearance of some Netflix Originals such as the series "The Yard," which seems to be an ongoing trend, as /Film's Erin Brady has reported.

The Oscar-nominated screenwriter Alessandro Camon (The Messenger) has signed on to adapt the Italian psychological thriller You Will Find the Words (Le parole lo sanno) for the screen.
British director Peter Webber (Girl With a Pearl Earring, Hannibal Rising) is attached to direct the film, which Rome-based Fenix Entertainment are producing.
Franzoso’s novel centers around a man with a terminal illness who has a chance encounter with a woman on a park bench, an encounter that leads to an extreme act of violence.
Camon told The Hollywood Reporter Fenix approached him about the adaptation and introduced him to Webber.
“We immediately hit it off,” he notes, calling Webber a “Renaissance man. He’s a cosmopolitan, he loves many genres and languages, and he’s truly into what he does.”

"She didn't recognize me…" "Well, did you expect her to?" One of the best discoveries of the 2022 Venice Film Festival this year is a film titled Monica, an understated family drama made by an Italian filmmaker even though it takes place entirely in California with an English-language cast. It's an intimate portrait of a woman who returns home to care for her dying mother. A delicate and nuanced story of a fractured family, the story explores universal themes of abandonment, aging, acceptance, and redemption. It's also an LGBTQ story but they're not trying to focus on that as it's part of the reveal in the film. The very talented Trace Lysette stars as Monica, with a cast including Patricia Clarkson, Emily Browning, Adriana Barraza, and Joshua Close. This is a very quiet, intimate, sensitive film that will connect deeply with some viewers. The nuanced performance by Trace Lysette is the...

Transparent’s Trace Lysette stars in the Venice Competition title Monica, directed and co-written by Andrea Pallaoro, who returns to the Lido after his films Medeas and Hannah.
Set in the U.S., Monica stars Lysette as the titular character, a trans woman who is summoned home to help care for her dying mother, Eugenia (Patricia Clarkson). The casting gives a strong clue to Monica’s birth gender, but the subject is rarely addressed head-on; rather lurking in the background, occasionally alluded to with pointed stories about kids and fall-outs. Eugenia appears not to recognize Monica, mistaking her for hired help, but as the bond between them increases, both the audience and Monica begin to wonder how much she really knows about the new arrival in the home.
It’s a tender portrait of familial reconnection in difficult circumstances, with terrific performances. Clarkson puts in a sensitive, characterful turn, with...

Mirrors are more than just refracted light — they are how we see ourselves and a reflection of how others see us. Reflections are everywhere in “Monica,” an understated family drama starring Trace Lysette as a woman who reluctantly returns home to see her estranged and ailing mother. Shot in an elegant 1:1 aspect ratio, we see Monica through French doors left ajar, in the glass frames of childhood photos, and the patina of the antique mirror in her mother’s girlish bedroom. If there is a reflection to be found, Monica is there.
Caustic and frail, Eugenia (Patricia Clarkson) doesn’t recognize her daughter, though it’s unclear whether that’s the dementia or because Monica is trans. Spare but poignant, “Monica” is
The film opens with New Order’s “Bizarre Love,” on an extreme close-up of Monica in metallic tanning goggles. Outside in her red convertible, we see her in profile from slightly behind,...

After supporting turns in Transparent and Hustlers, the magnetic Trace Lysette takes the lead as a woman who returns home to care for her dying, long-estranged mother (Patricia Clarkson) in Andrea Pallaoro’s Venice competition entry Monica. It’s an all too rare instance of a trans actress occupying nearly every frame of a fictional feature. The result, alas, doesn’t live up to the promise of the occasion, turning the character’s journey into fodder for a sluggish exercise in formalism.
As in his previous movies, Medeas and Hannah, the director (collaborating with screenwriting partner Orlando Tirado) tries to wring tension from visual and narrative austerity — a mostly static camera, deliberate pacing and parsimoniously doled out bits of backstory. But Hannah had a masterful Charlotte Rampling seeming to invent new ways to embody unhappiness before our very eyes, and Medeas was imbued with an atmospheric,...

Over the course of three quietly devastating features, Italian-born, America-based art-house director Andrea Pallaoro has shown just how inadequate words can be when it comes to expressing some of life’s most complicated emotions. In his latest, “Monica,” Pallaoro takes on the near-universal craving for parent-child connection, knowing full well that his two lead characters — a Midwestern trans woman and the uncomprehending mom who rejected her — won’t be able to say what each most needs to hear. But that doesn’t mean they can’t reach some kind of unspoken understanding, recognizable to those with experience reading between the lines.
More than a decade has passed since Monica (Trace Lysette) last saw her mother, Eugenia (Patricia Clarkson). Meanwhile, one could argue that her mother never saw her — not really. Pallaoro presumably wants to make things easier on us, and yet, his austere and occasionally alienating style doesn’t necessarily help.

The Venice Film Festival has done it again.
The lineup for the 79th Venice International Film Festival could have been a damp squib after Cannes’ stellar 2022 festival, which featured the likes of Hollywood blockbusters Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis alongside arthouse crowd pleasers, including Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness and Park Chan-wook’s South Korean mystery thriller Decision to Leave.
But Venice’s 2022 program, unveiled on Tuesday, stands up to the Croisette razzle-dazzle with an impressive mix of red-carpet-friendly, star-studded features and compelling, politically-charged dramas and documentaries. While there will be nothing to match Top Gun at the Lido this year, it looks like Venice’s position as the launch pad for award-season contenders is still firmly in place.
New features from Alejandro González Iñárritu, Florian Zeller, Noah Baumbach, Luca Guadagnino, Darren Aronofsky, Joanna Hogg and Olivia Wilde will all premiere in Venice.
