Nestled in the Ozarks of northwest Arkansas is a town called Eureka Springs that those of you living outside the south might never have heard of. A popular regional tourist destination just south of the Missouri border, the purposefully quaint little town in recent years has also staked out an unexpected position as a defiantly pro-lgbt community. In 2014 it became the first city in the state to issue same sex marriage licenses and in 2015 it passed a non discrimination ordinance protecting Lgbt visitors and residents.
It’s home to popular drag bars where performers sing gospel songs and patrons with crosses around their necks guzzle booze, alongside honeymooners of all stripes and tourists from surrounding states. And “The Gospel of Eureka,” a new documentary directed by Donal Mosher and Michael Palmieri, takes audiences to this small section of the country to examine its homegrown politics and allure.

Thanks to the members of Act Up (The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), being HIV-Positive is no longer a death sentence. But what happened to survivors of the initial wave of the AIDS epidemic, those members of the lost generation we never lost? Does the younger generation afford these survivors the respect they deserve, and could it ever be enough? These are the questions at the heart of “After Louie,” a moving new film from original Act Up member Vincent Gagliostro.

Rush Limbaugh breaks out “tranny,” Louis Tomlinson under fire for gay slur, Hedwig and the Angry Inch cast recording due in July
If you’ve got some time, I highly recommend heading over to Eaddy Mays’ Tumblr post about shipping. She asked followers about canon vs fanon, the dialog and responsibilities between fandom and creators, and expectations. She collected a mountain of responses, published them, and added her perspective. It covered Sterek vs. Dyler, queerbaiting, using fanon ships to promote a show, differences in fandoms like Supernatural, Teen Wolf, and Johnlock, and overall was really more thoughtful than I could ever do justice. But it’s wonderful seeing an actress listening and responding.
I honestly did watch the video of the One Direction boys smoking pot. Big deal. So I had missed that Louis made a racial slur and used “gay” in a derogatory fashion. Fans are now demanding an apology.

Playgirl wants Michiel Huisman, Edgar Wright exists Ant Man, Justin Vivian Bond weighs in on “tranny”
Mark Ruffalo almost didn’t take the part in The Normal Heart, but not for the reasons that one might think of a Hollywood actor. He asked Ryan Murphy “Aren’t we at the place in our culture, in our development, where a gay man should be playing this part?” And Ryan Murphy told him “That’s the antithesis of what this movie is about. It doesn’t matter what your sexual preference is. It matters what actor I think should play this part.” Julia Roberts actually did the interview with Mark, and the whole thing is a great read.
Spartacus’ Steven S. DeKnight has taken over the showrunner duties for the Netflix Daredevil series. So my question is if there are any obvious gay characters in the Daredevil canon, because we know DeKnight...

Tim Doyle was asked by Matt Dye of Blunt Graffix to create a poster for the Bijou Metro’s screening of Robocop!
From Doyle- “Robocop is by far one of the most influential films in my little life. I saw it in the theater in 1987 when I was merely 10 years old, and it completely rewired my brain in new and dark ways. And I thank Paul Verhoven for it every single day of my life. Listening to Verhoven’s commentary, he pointed out that for him- Robocop is a Jesus allegory, calling it ‘The American Jesus.’ And in keeping with great American traditions, this Titanium Jesus raises from the grave not for forgiveness, but for revenge. It’s a bloody mess, and brilliant social satire that has yet to be eclipsed in my opinion. The design is obviously lifted from Dali’s Crucifixion Hypercubus- my favorite film meets my favorite Crucifixion depiction.

It was well before eight on a Thursday in March, and onstage at Joe’s Pub, cocktail in hand and wearing a pleated lavender dress, was Justin Vivian Bond, the post-gender cabaret performer and a good friend to the better known. “When I was younger, I never drank gin, because it would make me mean,” Bond drawled. “But now I’m older and I can’t tell the difference.” Earlier, Bond had joked about how a performance at that twilight hour at Joe’s Pub is a “matinée,” and swung into what seemed to be the evening’s theme song about “night people”: “Before the sun, can spoil the fun … we’re night people.” Then Tilda Swinton walked in, perhaps the ultimate night-people hero. She was, in fact, a bit late, coming from a taping of Late Night With Seth Meyers, where she was promoting a vampire movie,...

The Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film is particularly exciting this year. We have more contenders than ever (71!) and so many strong films that the Academy's always controversial foreign language branch will undoubtedly piss various contingencies off when they announce the finalist list and then the nominees. They could lessen the size of the outcry each year if only their finalist list were 12 films long. It's so strange that they make it small enough (9 films) that those films which miss the nomination are in the minority and, thus, look particularly snubbed... numerically speaking. I've already raved about the Pinoy movie "Bwakaw", and here are two other worthy candidates for this annual honor. Don't miss them if you get a chance to see them

Future Live Blog Alert! The Tony Awards are this Sunday evening, June 12th on CBS with Neil Patrick Harris hosting. We'll do a live blog even though we haven't seen most of the productions. It's still the Tonys which means: song, dance, celebrity, weird gaffes that you'd think wouldn't be possible in a show celebrating Live performances... i.e. shouldn't they know how to handle live events?
So be here if you're so inclined. Now on to our four theater topics with film tendencies.

Daniel Craig's appearance in heels may be a cross-dressing first for the Bond hero but he follows a long tradition of gender role swapping from a tuxedo-clad Marlene Dietrich to Dustin Hoffman's Tootsie
Daniel Craig's appearance in heels, blonde wig and patterned dress for a video raising awareness of gender inequality for International Women's Day marks 007's drag debut. But cross-dressing is not, strictly speaking, new to the Bond franchise – remember the Spectre agent who attends his own faked funeral as his "widow" at the beginning of Thunderball? – and far from a novelty on the big screen.
The silent era, with its often stagey film productions, had its share of cross-dressing in the theatrical tradition, which continued into the sound era with numerous variations and embellishments. Generally speaking, girls dress as boys to get kinds of social access or agency normally denied to women while boys dress...

Actor, writer and director John Cameron Mitchell's unique aesthetic and talent cannot be questioned. His first film, 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch,' began as an off-Broadway play showcasing Mitchell as a frustrated transsexual from East Berlin whose musical stylings are stolen by the young man she's in love with. Mixing animation, outrageous musical numbers in suburban restaurants and rec rooms, and a dark humor (Hedwig's operation didn't go smoothly, so to speak, hence her "angry inch"), this heartbreaking rock opera that was more or less workshopped in the downtown NYC party Squeezebox won two awards at Sundance and later nabbed Mitchell a Golden Globes nom for best performance by an actor in a musical or comedy.

James Mitchell’s Shortbus was the mark of controversy in 2009, what with its real sex scenes, the potential firing of its star Sook Yin Lee by the CBC and its classification by some as ‘pornographic’. What the movie is, is an intimate and lively portrayal of a women lost amongst the interconnectedness of people in a city as well as the unique and faceted sexual identities of individuals and how each choose to reveal themselves as person and partner. The main plot is about Sophie– a woman who is a couple counselor/sex therapist who has never had a successful orgasm and attempts to find it through a weekly social and sexual salon called Shortbus.
This film is honest and sincere and that is exactly what is reflected back within the soundtrack amongst its eclectic mix of artists. Scott Matthew is utterly charming and earnest with his contribution ‘Upside Down...

Shortbus
Directed by John Cameron Mitchell
For his second feature, John Cameron Mitchell undertook an interesting idea to push the boundaries of mainstream film by including unstimulated sex. And the fact that Mitchell’s film was made and released is something short of a miracle. The title refers to the anything-goes Brooklyn club (“for the gifted and challenged”) where a variety of activities happen, ranging from multimedia presentations, group sex and group therapy.
Mitchell may be credited as the director and writer of Shortbus, but he’s really more of a conductor, a maestro in charge of overseeing the picture’s multiple stories, which were conceived and developed by him and his performers. Mitchell created scenarios for his actors, then let them improvise and practice relationships for months, without a script. They rehearsed on-and-off for two and a half years incorporating aspects of their own lives explaining the movie’s relaxed,...

The fabulous Tilda Swinton is now a half century old young timeless -- old, young... these concepts are too limited when it comes to the greats. But fact: On November 5th, 1960 Tilda Swinton first came into the world. So a tribute is most definitely in order.
50 Appropriate Ways
to Celebrate Swintonian Greatness
Be a genius.Dye your hair white blonde... or bright red.Be colorful.Imagine you have deep Scottish roots.Create an eccentric personal film festival.Attend any film festival near you.Have tremendous commitment to your art. Exhibit tremendous loyalty to your friends.Watch a Derek Jarman film immediately. (This should have been first. Just pretend you did it first.)
Stand naked in front of the mirror with your goodies tucked. Say "Same person. No different at all. Just a different sex"That's right. Watch Orlando (1993) again. It's so good.Break the fourth wall with Jimmy Sommerville blasting behind you as soundtrack.

At a time when originality looks like it's getting choked out of the entertainment business in lieu of monstrous cash profits, it's downright refreshing to come across--or revisit--a performer like Justin Bond. He's the singer-songwriter/Tony-nominated performance artist ("Kiki and Herb") who so happily sits on the fringe, mixing music, performance, and some gender-bending with a savage grace. Think of him as a portal for "real" entertainment that isn't coated with Hollywood's cavity-forming frosting. Delicious, yes. Most may recall that Bond starred in John Cameron Mitchell's evocative Shortbus several years ago, but he's been performing for years. He nabbed Obie, Bessie and Ethyl Eichelberger Awards and was named by Time Out New York as one of the Top 40 Favorite New Yorkers. London loves him, too--England knighted him one of the country's 50 Funniest People. A strong ally of the Lgbtiq community, Bond doesn't...

We’re back with another edition of TwitterWatch, our weekly update of tweeted fun!
Kicking things off for us, singer Matt Alber and former contestant turned choreographer Travis Wall may be giving us a reason to actually tune in to this week’s So You Think You Can Dance:
In other TV news, with tweets like these from Michael Urie and Justin Bond, it looks like Ugly Betty’s going to get really interesting:
And while we’re on the TV kick, how excited are you that Neil Patrick Harris is trying his hand at directing?
Now on a more serious subject, apparently Joe Lieberman doesn’t have many fans these days … at least not with Darryl Stephens, Wilson Cruz or Patrik-Ian Polk:
But of course Twitter’s not all doom and gloom. Just check out the drunken tweets of Cazwell, Stephen Fry and John Amaechi:

Should we now call him the award-winning Levi Johnston? The Alaskan teen formerly known as Sarah Palin's future son-in-law was in New York City last night to pick up porn website Fleshbot's Crossover Star award. In other words, he got props for having the cojones to strip down for Playgirl… "He was a little overwhelmed, but he handled it like a champ," Fleshbot editor Lux Alptraum tells us. "The crowd was thrilled to have him there. Everyone was supportive and excited." So much so that someone yelled out, "We love you, Levi," when he was presented with his shiny phallic trophy by New York drag entertainer Justin Bond and Hedwig and the Angry Inch director...

This weekend I had the opportunity to listen to cinephile actress Tilda Swinton reminisce about her career at the New Yorker Festival. I covered that beat (thrilling, rapid fire... oops, that was that my heart) for Tribeca Film. Naturally, wrestling the goodies down to article form was a mite troubling, because she was so candid, interesting and worthy of plunking down money for... though I guess with these new blogging laws I should indicate that my ticket was comped.
I always love hearing Tilda talk about her first collaborator Derek Jarman (which she did, a lot... there wasn't much discussion of her recent forays into mainstream fare) but one of my favorite bits was her story about meeting Eric Zonca, her Julia director, in Cannes. He was drunk and they tried to sneak into a party that they were both turned away from... even though they were both Cannes officials.

I never know what to make of GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. I totally understand their raison d'etre but they've made some odd calls over the years. Remember when they totally endorsed that Adam Sandler movie? The one with the absurd and frankly damaging premise that gay men have it easy when it comes to employer benefits and insurance.
