Matthew Fox (World War Z, Alex Cross, “Lost”) joins with Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln, No Country For Old Men, The Fugitive, Hope Springs), newcomer Eriko Hatsune and award-winning Japanese star Toshiyuki Nishida to bring to life the American occupation of Japan in the perilous and unpredictable days just after Emperor Hirohito’s World War II surrender. As General Douglas MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he assigns an expert in Japanese culture – and psychological warfare – General Bonner Fellers (Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question hanging over the country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Caught between the high-wire political intrigue of his urgent mission and his own impassioned search for the mysterious school teacher (Hatsune) who first drew him to Japan, Fellers can be certain only that the...

Classroom Exercise: Webber’s Latest Historical Drama Dry and Sleepy
Arriving with all the subdued excitement of a vaguely written history textbook comes Peter Webber’s latest film, Emperor, which documents the true story of one man’s task to investigate Japan’s leader General Hirohito during America’s post World War II occupation under the control of General Douglas MacArthur. The task is to unveil just how responsible the Japanese leader was for reprehensible war crimes, the evidence to be used to decide how the Americans pardon or prosecute. While this sounds like a deliriously ripe scenario for intrigue and melodrama, Webber’s film contains neither, instead deciding to saddle it with a deadening war time romance, and rotating mechanically back and forth between a politically explosive scenario and lost love. While Webber is best known for his debut film, an adaptation of the novel The Girl With a Pearl Earring,...

Hirohito sat on the Chrysanthemum Throne through the Japanese invasion of China, the attack on Pearl Harbor and all through World War II. But at the end of the war, there were two emperors in Tokyo. Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander of the Allied powers in the Pacific, ruled Japan as a potentate, overseeing reforms that turned the country away from militarism and feudalism and setting the stage for Japan's ascent as an economic superpower.
"Emperor" is about both men, about MacArthur deciding whether to prosecute Hirohito as a warmonger and war criminal. Was the "God Emperor" merely a passive observer to his country's crimes against humanity? Or did he encourage it?
Tommy Lee Jones gives us a saltier version of the image-obsessed MacArthur, a cagey, guarded and cunning man who wanted to cover himself if he decided to absolve the emperor of blame, but brave enough to know that "a...

An indie historic drama Emperor which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year to a standing ovation, finally gets a full-length trailer. We only had a chance to see the short clip from a grand historical romance-drama of the kind too rarely seen these days.
Peter Webber’s film takes place in the immediate aftermath of World War II and stars Matthew Fox as General Bonner Fellers, an expert in Japanese culture assigned to assist General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) in investigating whether or not the beloved Japanese Emperor should be punished for war crimes.
And, despite Jones bankable presence in the trailer, this is a tale focused on Fox’s character and his investigation. The romance with the mysterious school teacher Aya (Eriko Hatsune) weaved into it. Emperor, scripted by Vera Blasi and David Klass (Kiss the Girls), also stars Kaori Momoi, Toshiyuki Nishida and Aaron Jackson.

"Let's show them some good old-fashioned American swagger." While I like to imagine this is what Tommy Lee Jones says to himself before he steps onto any movie set ever, it's actually a line he delivers as General Douglas MacArthur in the World War II historical drama Emperor. We got a first look at the feature helmed by Peter Webber (Girl With A Pearl Earring) in a short but strong clip last fall, as Emperor was set to make its screen at the Gala Presentation of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. Now as this ambitious post-war movie gears up for its spring release, we've got a full trailer that's got plenty of salty American swagger, plus loads of intrigue. Check it out below, thanks to Yahoo: Penned by Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup) and David Klass (Walking Tall), Emperor centers on General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox), an American soldier tasked...

Los Angeles, Jan 9: Actor Brad Pitt is reportedly set to play Pontius Pilate, the man who killed Jesus Christ, in a film.
The 49-year-old is said to be in talks to take on the lead role in period drama "Pontius Pilate", which tells the biblical tale of the man who sentenced Christ to be killed by crucifixion.
Pitt is expected to sign up soon, reports deadline.com. The script has been written by Vera Blasi.

Pontius Pilate, like Benedict Arnold after him, lived in a time of great political and social unrest. Big things were happening, many sides were battling against each other, feelings were running deep, and tempers were flaring. Each was faced with a fateful decision that forced them to choose which side to come down on, which warring faction to appease, and in the end the decisions they made were so poor that they didn’t just make them failures or losers, they made them into history’s most despised villains, the sorts of names who will never be forgotten due to their infamy. Bad for a guy like Pontius Pilate, sure, but a dissection of the political and religious turmoil that led to his decision of whether or not to authorize the crucifixion of Jesus Christ sounds like it could make for a really good movie. Or, at least, that’s what Warner Bros has been hoping ever...

The movies built around the New Testament Gospel have always tried to explore new sides of Jesus and his teachings. There have been quite a few that have garnered controversy such as “The Passion of the Christ” or “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Even though the story is more than two thousand years old, there are other figures that have not had as much attention.
It seems that Pontius Pilate will now have the spotlight with Brad Pitt rumored to be in the running to portray him. Unlike the typical Biblical epic, the story will center on Pilate’s journey to political power and infamy. From his childhood as the son of a Roman Knight to a soldier himself, he then becomes a political star and is given a governorship. Another major point is his mishandling of the religious struggles of Judea, which will culminate with the crucifixion of Jesus.

1.) Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the latest name to join Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. His character, a cocky gambler named Johnny, is considered one of the film's leads and was originally offered to Johnny Depp. "I love how the first move uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality," Gordon-Levitt said of the project. "Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr. Rodriguez." Deadline also expects a few "tough guy actors" to be added shortly, with Josh Brolin considered one good possibility. As for Gordon-Levitt, the deal takes him out of the running for a few other roles he has been mulling over. One of those was the lead in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, which now has Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi and John Krasinski among those left in contention. 2.) Speaking of Gordon-Levitt, he passed...

A few months ago Warner Bros. announced they would be making a Biblical epic called Pontius Pilate, and picked up a script from screenwriter Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup, Woman On Top and Emperor). It's being reported that Brad Pitt is looking to take on the lead role in the film and play the man who sent Jesus Christ to his death. I like Pitt as an actor, but it's hard for me to see him in a role like this. If he ends up taking the role, it will be interesting to see how he approaches it.
Deadline got a hold of the script, explained the story, and talked about the script saying "the evolution of Lucius Pontius Pilate from the sensitive son of a Roman Knight into a ferocious soldier whose warrior exploits make him a general and puts him on a political track under the Roman Emperor Tiberius.

Actor eyeing lead in new Hollywood epic about Roman prefect who sent Jesus to his death, reports say
Brad Pitt is being lined up for the lead role in a new Hollywood film about the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate, who oversaw the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, reports Deadline.
Studio Warner Bros is backing the big-budget project, which is based on a screenplay by Woman On Top author Vera Blasi. Her take, details of which first emerged in the summer, follows Pilate from his youth as the sensitive son of a Roman knight to the reluctant governorship of Judea, climaxing with his decision to order Christ's crucifixion. The screenplay, which Blasi claims to have researched for more than a decade, imagines the Roman prefect as an unfortunate figure caught amid antagonistic religious factions who is forced to make the fateful decision after finding himself in desperate need of popular goodwill. Brad Pitt is reportedly circling the title role in Pontius Pilate, a new interpretation of sorts on the man that ordered the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. A biopic is in the works at Warner Bros who acquired the script from Tortilla Soup writer Vera Blasi.

Brad Pitt is in talks to join Warner Bros' "Pontius Pilate," a new film about the life of the Roman general who authorized the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The script is written by Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup) and has been compared to "Braveheart" and "Gladiator." The new movie follows Lucius Pontius Pilate from growing up as the sensitive son of a Roman Knight to becoming a ruthless warrior who becomes a general under the Roman Emperor Tiberius. The Emperor eventually places Pilate in charge or Judea, during a time when Jerusalem was dealing with religious tensions. Pilate gets in over his head, and lets his arrogance and inability to control the citizens lead him to make catastrophic decisions. In need of public approval, he is asked to decide the fate of a 33-year-old rabbi accused by religious elders of claiming he is King of the Jews.

Brad Pitt is said to be circling the title role in the Pontius Pilate biopic in development at Warner Bros. Pictures.
"Woman On Top" scribe Vera Blasi wrote the spec script which follows Lucius Pontius Pilate's transformation from the sensitive son of a Roman Knight into a ferocious soldier on the political fast track under Emperor Tiberius' rule.
Promised a military governorship in Egypt, Pilate is instead assigned to become Judea's prefect at a time when the Roman-occupied Jerusalem was a cauldron of religious tensions. He fell into historical infamy when he had to decide the fate of a 33-year old rabbi by the name of Jesus Christ.
The film puts a new spin on Pilate, portraying him as a capable but arrogant soldier who gets in way over his head and ends up making catastrophic decisions. It also reportedly focuses on the history, politics and character motivations rather than the greater theological implications.

It's entirely possible that in a few years time we will identify Brad Pitt as the man who killed Jesus Christ. New reports have surfaced online saying that the A-list star is now contemplating signing on for Pontius Pilate, a new period drama set up over at Warner Bros. that explores the biblical tale of the man who sentenced the Christian savior to be killed by crucifixion. The script was written by Vera Blasi (Woman on Top) and while Pitt isn't currently officially attached, that could change very soon. Deadline, which first reported the potential casting news, has a full breakdown of the script, having received a copy of it after the project was announced last August. Today, Deadline reports that Brad Pitt is eyeing the leading role. The screenplay, from Woman on Top and Tortilla Soup screenwriter Vera Blasi, is said to offer a human look at the religious figure and, according to Blasi, is primarily based in historical fact, detailing Pilate's life up until the fateful order. Blasi also supplied the screenplay for the upcoming historical drama Emperor , set to be directed by Peter Webber. Hollywood is — if nothing else — a land of over-stuffed bandwagons, and as studio suits begin to tire of super-sizing fairy tales, the latest micro-trend in “let’s-try-launching-this-kind-of-franchise” appears to be feature films based on the Bible.
The first, director Darren Aronofsky’s take on Noah, just recently wrapped filming in Iceland with Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, and Anthony Hopkins. The rest of the Bible-based projects remain in some stage of development without an official greenlight, but many have A-list names hovering around them. According to Deadline, there are two possible films about Moses, with Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg...

As if you need further proof that the Bible is as fertile a tilling ground for Hollywood movies as superhero origin stories (and really, what is the Bible but the ultimate superhero origin story?) Warner Bros. has announced that it's working on a New Testament epic based on the life of Pontius Pilate. According to Deadline, screenwriter Vera Blasi has drafted a new take on the infamous fifth Prefect of Judea best known for sentencing Jesus to death—and for being portrayed by David Bowie in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation Of Christ—that will focus on Pilate ...

Whenever we get a film about the last days of Jesus Christ, it’s usually told pretty straightforwardly, or simply from his point of view. One of the characters that is usually not explored in much detail is Pontius Pilate, the man responsible for ordering Jesus’ crucifixion, but apparently that is about to change.
Warner Bros. recently purchased the rights to a script entitled Pontius Pilate, which will “follow Pilate’s journey as a soldier who gains power under the Roman Emperor Tiberius, but screws up along the way and finds himself desperate for public approval when the time comes to make the choice as to the fate of Jesus of Nazareth.”
The script comes from writer Vera Blasi, who co-wrote the screenplay for the upcoming film Emperor, which deals with deciding the fate of Emperor Hirohito after World War II. The only other projects in her filmography are Woman on Top and Tortilla Soup,...

1.) While the rest of the core cast has already been confirmed to return for Thor: The Dark World, Kat Dennings remained the lone holdout. That likely had a lot to do with her schedule and working around her sitcom, "2 Broke Girls." But all has been resolved and the actress is officially set to reprise her role as Darcy Lewis. The report even suggests the character's role has expanded. So while Dennings was good in purely a comic relief role, I'm glad she might actually actually contribute something to the story this time around. [Deadline] 2.) News about Sean Penn's next directing gig broke a few weeks ago when it was reported he would direct Crazy For The Storm for Warner Bros. The story is based on the memoirs of Norman Ollestad, who was 11-years-old when he was in a plane crash that killed three people, including his father. He was stranded on a mountaintop,...

You know who got a bum rap in The Bible? Pontius Pilate. Guy was just doing his job when Joshua of Nazareth (Aka Jesus Christ) showed up on his doorstep. Granted, he did send the man to die a horrifyingly painful death, but he washed his hands and gave the crowd the chance to free the man who claimed to be the Son of God. At least he’s not Judas. He’s definitely vilified though, and a new project at Warners seeks to complicate the character a bit more. According to Deadline Hollywood, the studio has secured a script called Pontius Pilate from Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup, Woman On Top). It seems like studios are finding their religion lately. A flood of projects led by Darren Aronofsky’s Noah is coming down the pipe, as the Deadline article smartly points out. The real question is whether the religious community will rally around them or condemn them...

Warner Bros. has just picked up a script to a new biblical film called Pontius Pilate, from screenwriter Vera Blasi (Tortilla Soup, Woman On Top and Emperor), based on the man who sent Jesus Christ to his death. This sounds like it will be an incredible film project, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
According to Deadline who has read the script, the story follows "the evolution of Lucius Pontius Pilate from the sensitive son of a Roman Knight into a ferocious soldier whose warrior exploits make him a general and puts him on a political track under the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Promised a military governorship in Egypt, Pilate is instead assigned by Tiberius to become the prefect of Judea, at a time when Jerusalem was a cauldron of religious tensions between various factions of the Jewish faith. So Warner Bros. may have recently passed on The Dark Tower, but now it seems that the studio has something a bit more controversial up its sleeve. Deadline reports that WB has purchased a script called Pontias Pilate from Woman on Top writer Vera Blasi, a new take on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as told through the eyes of the man who ordered it to happen. The film will follow Pilate's journey as a soldier who gains power under the Roman Emperor Tiberius, but screws up along the way and finds himself desperate for public approval when the time comes to make the choice as to the fate of Jesus of Nazareth. It shouldn't surprise anyone who closely follows the Hollywood studio system that WB wouldn't take a chance on something as ambitious as The Dark Tower and would instead sign off on a biblical story, since that's the...

Roman governor who ordered crucifixion of Jesus Christ is latest biblical figure to be considered for big-screen treatment
Movies based on the lives of Noah, Moses and those battling brothers Cain and Abel all look set to arrive in multiplexes over the next few years, under the watchful auspices of Darren Aronofsky, Steven Spielberg and Will Smith. Now Hollywood studio Warner Bros has been tipped to present a big-screen epic about a less likely biblical figure: Pontius Pilate.
Executives have purchased a screenplay by Woman on Top author Vera Blasi with the aim of producing a big-budget period film, according to Deadline. Her take follows Pilate from his youth as the sensitive son of a Roman knight to the reluctant governorship of Judea, climaxing with his reluctant decision to order Jesus Christ's crucifixion. The screenplay imagines the Roman prefect as an unfortunate figure caught amid antagonistic religious factions who is...

Warner Bros has acquired "Woman On Top" scribe Vera Blasi's Biblical-themed spec script "Pontius Pilate" says Deadline.
This biopic follows Lucius Pontius Pilate's transformation from the sensitive son of a Roman Knight into a ferocious soldier on the political fast track under Emperor Tiberius' rule.
Other figures glimpsed in the story include Tiberius, Caligula, John the Baptist, Salome, Caiaphas and Mary Magdalene.
The script itself, said to be akin to...

Warner Bros is on board for a new project about Pontius Pilate, which, if done correctly, should offer viewers a more in depth picture of the historical figure some consider to be among the most reviled in the New Testament. Penned by Tortilla Soup scribe Vera Blasi, the script tells the story of Pilate.s rise through the military ranks, his promising political career and ultimately his thankless appointment to the religious hotbed of Judea. Blasi told Deadline she estimates about eighty percent of the story arc was pulled from either The Bible or historical records, while the other twenty percent was made up to fill in the gaps. Raised Catholic, she spent years researching not only her main character.s life but also the other pertinent figures who played a central role in how Pilate ended up in Judea and why he chose to let Christ be nailed to...

The Bible bandwagon is loose and it’s rolling down the hill at top speed. At this rate, anyone who gets a mention in the Good Book will soon be the subject of a film. Still, Pontius Pilate is one of the more noteworthy – and controversial – figures to crop up, so it’s perhaps not shocking that Warner Bros. has bought a script about him to develop.Woman On Top writer Vera Blasi has penned the screenplay, which will track more of Pilate’s life than just his decision about Jesus’ fate. Born the sensitive son of a Roman warrior, he grows up to become a ferocious soldier who heads towards politics under Emperor Tiberius. When he’s promised a military governorship, he doesn’t get the posting in Egypt he craves, but is instead assigned to become prefect of Judea, putting him on a collision course with Biblical history.

If the heroes of comic books start to lose public interest, heroes of The Bible might be Hollywood’s next-best bet. It only scratches the surface when I say Aronofsky has Noah, Ridley Scott wants to make Moses, and Spielberg might be doing Gods and Kings, yet Warner Bros. — who are not only behind the lattermost, but also hope to have it going in just a couple of years’ time — are making another move in this realm, with Deadline reporting that the studio has picked up Pontius Pilate.
Vera Blasi (Emperor) has written the prospective film, which is earning comparisons to Gladiator and Braveheart, thanks to its mixture of action and political plots which are, in and of themselves, a combination of fact and fiction. (The writer claims about 80% of her script is rooted in historical record.) In it, we see the growth of Lucius Pontius Pilate from “the sensitive...

Have you been dreaming about a movie that will follow the life and political intrigue of Pontius Pilate, the man who reluctantly sent Jesus Christ to the crucifix? Well, today is your lucky day! It seems the minds over at Warner Bros. think a movie about him is a better idea than making "The Dark Tower" or "The Imitation Game" which they let go in the past week. Oh, Hollywood! WB has gone ahead and picked up "Pontius Pilate" written by Vera Blasi, who also penned early aughts indies "Woman On Top" and "Tortilla Soup" as well as the upcoming "Emperor" with Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones. So what has the studio all hot and bothered? Well, according to Deadline, the story has a kind of "Braveheart" or "Gladiator" epic-sized scope and tell the story of Pontius' rise from battlefield warrior to cog in the political machine, who is...

Exclusive: Warner Bros has acquired Pontius Pilate, a script by Woman On Top scribe Vera Blasi about one of the most vilified figures in history, even before Mick Jagger sang about him. It becomes the latest in a growing list of Biblical-themed projects taking shape at studios all over town. Mark Johnson will produce through his Gran Via banner, Lynn Harris is steering the project and they are already talking to directors. I got hold of a draft, and while it is always a challenge to mount a big budget period film, this one is strong enough to follow a fast track toward production. This script follows the evolution of Lucius Pontius Pilate from the sensitive son of a Roman Knight into a ferocious soldier whose warrior exploits make him a general and puts him on a political track under the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Warner Bros. has plans to bring to the screen the life story of Pontius Pilate , the 1st century Roman prefect who authorized the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Deadline reports.

We got our first look at Tommy Lee Jones in Peter Webber’s upcoming historical drama, Emperor, back in May, which was swiftly followed by the first sales posters for the film, ahead of going on the market at Cannes.
With the announcement that the film will make its world premiere at Tiff, we’ve now got our first good look at Jones’ co-stars, Matthew Fox (Lost, Alex Cross) and Eriko Hatsune (Norwegian Wood).
“Nearly seven decades after the end of World War II, it is difficult to fully grasp just how devastating was the effect of Emperor Hirohito’s surrender to Allied forces in August 1945, along with his accompanying surrender of any claim of divinity. The events of that summer, galvanized by the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, signalled much more than mere military defeat for Japan: it called into question the country’s most entrenched beliefs.
