It looks like Rian Johnson will be filming Knives Out 3 at the end of the year, with Daniel Craig back as Benoit Blanc.
A week or two back, writer/producer/director Rian Johnson – and his producing partner Ram Bergman – inked a new two-picture deal with Warner Bros. However, as speculated at the time, Warner Bros is going to have to wait its turn in the queue, as Johnson fulfils his commitment to Netflix. The same Netflix that paid for two Knives Out movies.
It’s had one already: Glass Onion, that proved a hit for the streamer back in 2022. Now, Johnson is ready to press ahead with Knives Out 3, and a report over at World Of Reel indicates that filming will take place at the end of this year. In what is no surprise, Warner Bros Motion Picture Group is getting into business with its Dune and Wonka star Timothée Chalamet, and has hammered a multi-year first look feature film deal with the Oscar nominee as actor and producer.
Between the Dune movies and Wonka, Chalamet’s recent pics with the Burbank, CA lot have delivered $1.6 billion to studio coffers. Chalamet became the first actor in over four decades to star in the top two domestic-grossing films released in an 8-month period.
The latest talent deal is one of many hammered out by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-Chairs and CEOs, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, as they set their future slate at the studio. Since being announced for the top studio job at Warner Bros back in June 2022, the duo have made deals with Tom Cruise, Jon M. Chu, and T Street’s Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman.

Timothée Chalamet has proven twice within just the last three months that he is a true movie star. He’s one of the few young actors right now who can open a movie, whether it’s a family-friendly romp like “Wonka” or a sci-fi epic like “Dune: Part Two.”
That both of those were released by Warner Bros. is motivation for the studio to lock his services down as best they can. And so they have.
On Tuesday, WB film group heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy announced they’ve signed a multi-year, first-look feature film deal with Chalamet in which he will collaborate with the studio on future projects as both an actor and a producer. No specific projects were announced today.
Chalamet, 28, is still new to the producing game — but no longer a rookie. He produced Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All,” which was greenlit by MGM...

Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman are the latest to sign up for some of Warner Bros’ cash: more here.
Given Warner Bros Discovery has had its back against the wall for much of the last year or two, it was bound to try something to get out of the pickle it found itself in. In this case, the plan? Spend, and spend on talent.
Warner Bros – outside of Barbie – has become known as the studio that likes to delete completed films, and it ain’t a good look when trying to attract filmmakers. Still, the old-fashioned chequebook still seems to work, and over the past few months, the studio has inked expensive deals with the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Coogler and Tom Cruise.
The immediate priority for director Rian Johnson and regular producer Ram Bergman is their third Knives Out film, for which they’re committed to make for Netflix.

Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s company T-Street has signed a two-picture producing deal with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.
Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who took over as the studio’s co-chairs and CEOs in 2022, orchestrated the deal. It marks the producers’ first collaboration with Warner Bros., having previously worked with Lionsgate on the box office hit “Knives Out,” Netflix on its sequel “Glass Onion,” Disney on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and Focus Features on the neo-noir thriller “Brick.” It’s unclear if Johnson will direct either of the two films that he’ll be overseeing at Warner Bros.
“Mike and Pam’s renewed commitment to original storytelling and the theatrical experience make Warner Bros. Discovery an ideal place to help us bring the filmmakers we love to audiences around the world on a grand scale,” said Johnson and Bergman. “We’re thrilled to have them as partners.

Rian Johnson is headed to the Warner Bros. lot.
The filmmaker’s T-Street banner, which he runs with producing partner Ram Bergman, has inked a two-picture producing pact with Warners, the studio announced Monday. It’s the latest in a series of deals Warners has inked with top talent as it shores up its relationships across Hollywood, even as it has taken some reputational hits in some creative corners for shelving several films. In recent months, Tom Cruise, Margot Robbie and Ryan Coogler have all inked deals with the studio.
As a director, Johnson is known for mind-bending features like Looper, big budget genre entry Star Wars: The Last Jedi and original who dunnit film series Knives Out, which has included sequel Glass Onion and an upcoming third installment, which is aiming to film later this year for Netflix. The final trailer for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem teases that “they” are coming and reveals the discovery in the ’70s of something called the “Wow” signal. There’s a lot going on in the final trailer, yet it still manages to pull off being as vague as possible. If you haven’t read Liu Cixin’s 3 Body Problem book trilogy, the trailer will hint at what’s in store without spoiling the experience.
Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood‘s Alexander Woo created the series and serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, encouraged Benioff and Weiss to read the trilogy back in 2019, and both were immediately hooked.

This year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards stayed ahead of the Oscar curve once more, announcing their winners on Sunday, February 25 in the usual chilly white tent on the Santa Monica beach (and on YouTube). With Oscar voting not over until the evening of February 27, the winners at the 39th Spirits could gain valuable Oscar momentum.

When she tried roasting the celebrities, she called “May December” star Natalie Portman a “stupid bitch,” Sterling K. Brown “a Stupid K. Bitch,” and said of Charles Melton, “everyone wants to have sex with you, you stupid bitch” and Greta Lee, “you...

Jeffrey Wright took home the award for best lead performance at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for his role in American Fiction.
When Wright made his way to the stage to accept the award from presenter Colman Domingo, he expressed how thrilled he was to receive the honor from the actor. “Wow, thank you, thank you. And to receive this from you, Colman, man…it’s just a beautiful gift,” he gushed.
The American Fiction star had one of the most candid, heartfelt speeches of the night.

Despite final voting for the 2024 Oscars having already commenced, there is still juice worth squeezing out of the final stretch of award shows setting the tone for who could win on March 10.
For example, Best Picture nominee Christine Vachon introducing “Past Lives” writer-director Celine Song to accept the Debut Feature Award at the 2024 Kodak Film Awards on Friday, February 23 by saying “Celine’s integrity of vision, her absolute knowledge of the story that she wanted to tell, and her ability to communicate that to everybody on our set, and to the actors was just transcendent,” does tee up the recent DGA Award winner well in the ongoing campaign to pull off a surprise win for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar (BAFTA winner “Anatomy of a Fall” is the current frontrunner.)

Exclusive: T-Street filmmakers Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman have set Katie McNeill to become a producer at their independent studio. McNeill joins the film side of the company alongside producers Ben LeClair, Leopold Hughes and Nikos Karamigios.
McNeill joins T-Street on the heels of a big year for the company in both film and TV, where they produced the highly acclaimed films American Fiction and Fair Play, from first time writer/directors Cord Jefferson and Chloe Domont, respectively. On a recent Screen Talk podcast, producers Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman said they specifically tried to avoid overhyping T-Street’s film “Fair Play” before it sold to Netflix for $20 million and became Sundance 2023’s biggest sale. Elsewhere, Lily Gladstone took time at the IndieWire Honors gala to champion her competition title “Fancy Dance,” which to this day inexplicably hasn’t sold despite all the praise around it in last year’s competition slate.
Turns out, it was “Fancy Dance,” not “Fair Play,” that we included in last year’s Hot Sales Titles gallery. That shows how unpredictable Sundance can be, and why it’s so exciting. Surprise breakout hits pop every year. Movies with big star power don’t get scooped up by a streamer and give the little guys a chance to make a bid. As we head into Oscar balloting on Thursday, let’s not forget about Chloe Domont’s Fair Play which reawakened the erotic thriller, and specifically spoke to the Me-Too era. The MRC and T-Street production went into Sundance last year under the radar and became the fest’s first big deal with Netflix scooping up the Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor movie for $20M.
The movie further propelled Domont from being a working TV episodic director on shows such as Billions, Ballers and Star Trek Discovery, to auteur status with this original screenplay she had been “compounding for years.”
You can listen to our Crew Call interview:
Fair Play tells the story about a promising, young, very successful couple, who are engaged to marry — except they work at the same Wall Street hedge fund. She winds up getting a promotion over him, which leaves the man spiraling as his fiancée...

Exclusive: Deadline’s annual Read the Screenplay series spotlighting awards season’s most talked-about scripts kicks off this year with Fair Play, Chloe Domont’s debut feature that Netflix acquired after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
Domont, whose TV directing credits include Billions and Suits, made her feature screenwriting and helming debut with the pic, which was spawned via T-Street and MRC’s Emerging Filmmaker Program and counts Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman among the executive producers.
The script for the relationship thriller follows Emily (Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynover) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich), who work together at a cutthroat financial firm and are also a couple. When a coveted promotion arises, the pair’s once supportive exchanges begin to sour as power and gender dynamics irrevocably shift, forcing them to face the true price of success and the limits of ambition.
Dumont said the film’s themes resonate in these times.

“3 Body Problem,” the highly anticipated sci-fi series from “Game of Thrones” executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, will debut its first eight episodes on March 21, 2024, Netflix announced on Friday as part of its Geeked Week promotional campaign. The news was accompanied by the first extended look at a scene from the show, featuring stars John Bradley (“Game of Thrones”), Jess Hong (“The Brokenwood Mysteries”) and Sea Shimooka (“Arrow”), as well as the first poster.
The series is based on the best-selling book series “The Three Body Problem” by Cixin Liu, and tells a sprawling, multi-generational story that spans the cosmos. Per the official Netflix logline, “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unflinching detective...

3 Body Problem will launch on Netflix nearly four years after first being revealed.
But fans excited for the sci-drama series from Game of Thrones showrunners will have to wait a little bit longer than previously expected.
The series, which comes from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as well as Alexander Woo (The Terror: Infamy) will launch on March 21.
Last June, when Netflix first unveiled a trailer for the series, which is based on Chinese author Liu Cixin’s sci-fi book trilogy, the streamer said the series would launch in January 2024.
3 Body Problem is the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization.

Netflix is giving us a sneak peek at its new sci-fi series “3 Body Problem,” from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
In a new clip released Friday, “Game of Thrones” actor John Bradley is transported to a dystopian world after putting on a distinctly nonelectronic metallic helmet.
“There’s no screen — there’s no headphone jack, there’s not even a f–king charging port,” Bradley says in the clip. “Usually there’d be logos all over it if it was a Sony or an Oculus, or whatnot — it’s probably a beta tester.”
“No, this is not beta anything,” Jess Hong, who also stars in the series, tells Bradley’s character. “You don’t understand — this was indistinguishable from anything from reality.
After confirming that there is no password needed to log in the system, Bradley’s character puts on the headpiece, and is immediately...

There’s also a new, more specific description of the anticipated show: “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unflinching detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.”

Cord Jefferson didn’t always know he wanted to be a director. While working on Netflix’s comedy series “Master of None,” actor/writer/creator Aziz Ansari asked Jefferson out of the blue if he ever wanted to direct. Jefferson recalls, “I said, ‘No, I’ve never been to film school, I don’t know anything about cameras or lighting. I don’t think that’s for me.”
But Jefferson says Ansari’s response “planted the seed” for what would be a catalyst for him to tackle his directorial debut, “American Fiction,” based on the novel “Erasure.” “He said, ‘Dude, I went to NYU for business. I never went to film school. I’ve just been on sets and paid attention. All you need to do is hire people who understand the technical stuff and then be able to articulate what’s in your head.”

Jeffrey Wright is a frustrated author bent on making the publishing industry see its own racist hypocrisy in the first trailer for American Fiction.
In Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut, Jeffrey Wright plays Monk, a frustrated author who decides to take on the culture’s obsession with reducing people to stereotypes, particularly entertainment that profits and peddles in tired — and offensive — tropes about Black Americans.
“What really struck me was that too few books were about my people. Where’s our stories? Where’s our representation?” Issa Rae’s Sintara Golden, a rising Black author, is seen telling a crowd in the trailer, before she begins to read from her new book. “Yo, Sharonda! Girl, you be pregnant again?!’ ‘If I is, Ray Ray’s goin’ be a real father this time around.'”
The excerpt garners a standing ovation from the room and a deep pain for Monk, who...

Jeffery Wright is rewriting what it means to be a serious academic author in dark comedy “American Fiction,” winner of the TIFF People’s Choice Award this year.
Wright stars as Monk, a novelist whose high-brow books haven’t hit the bestseller list in years. Frustrated, a drunken Monk parodies himself for a mock memoir under a pseudonym, incorporating Black stereotypes…and becomes a hit author in anonymity.
Cord Jefferson wrote and directed the critically acclaimed film, which premiered at TIFF. Jefferson’s directorial debut is an adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure”; Everett served as an executive producer on the film, along with Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman.

Consider this: you’ve made an acclaimed “Star Wars” sequel, reinvigorated the whodunit genre, scored an Oscar nomination and spawned an unlikely franchise. What do you do next? If you’re Rian Johnson, you turn around and offer a helping hand to young filmmakers coming up behind you, nurturing one of the buzziest movies of the fall in the process: “Fair Play.”
Writer/director Chloe Domont’s debut feature, a steamy erotic thriller about the power dynamics between two young people (Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor) who both work as financial analysts for the same cutthroat hedge fund, is an unmitigated success. After a bidding war at Sundance, the film was snatched up by Netflix for a cool $20 million, and it’s now currently one of the most-watched new titles on the platform following its release earlier this month.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “Fair Play.”]
All Chloe Domont wanted to do was direct. But film directing assignments aren’t handed out to NYU Film School grads, so she apprenticed in television to make a living, starting out as a writer’s assistant, eventually moving onto being the only woman in an otherwise all-male writer’s room.
That intense, life-changing experience inspired her directorial debut “Fair Play,” which she wrote during the pandemic. The basic outline: a young hedge fund executive (Phoebe Dynevor) is so happy with her boyfriend (Alden Ehrenreich), who also works at her hedge fund, that they agree to get married. They keep their forbidden relationship secret at the firm, going so far as to take different routes to the office. But when she’s suddenly promoted over him, becoming his boss in the process, the dynamic swiftly changes.
The movie is intimate, sexy, and violent — and quickly got financed. And...

On Friday night, the Toronto International Film Festival had one of its buzziest premieres of its lineup this year with “American Fiction,” an adaptation of Percival Everett’s 2001 novel “Erasure” that serves as Emmy-winning writer Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut.
Given the filmmaker’s pedigree, having worked on acclaimed series like “Watchmen,” “Succession,” “The Good Place,” and “Master of None,” plus the inclusion of Tony and Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright as the lead, the Orion Pictures release had been pegged as an under-the-radar awards contender.
However, the TIFF audience would soon find out that in the story of a Black American author fed up with the lack of recognition his cerebral work has gotten, writing a soulless, stereotypical book that becomes an accidental bestseller, Jefferson already had built-in commentary on what Black American stories, including his, are considered awardsworthy.
“It’s this revolving door of misery and tragedy,” said the...

Some people will do anything to move up the corporate ladder regardless of who gets hurt. In Fair Play, director/writer Chloe Domont puts a 21st century spin on classic eighties and nineties style corporate thrillers. Imagine a movie like Disclosure from a female perspective or if the Michael Douglas character happened to be a raving psychopath.
In Fair Play, an unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund pushes a young couple’s relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement. Domont directs from a script she wrote, with Phoebe Dynevor starring as the crumbling couple. Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor have a tough time navigating a clandestine romance while competing for a coveted job promotion in the first trailer for the Netflix thriller Fair Play.
From writer and director Chloe Domont, the movie was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and focuses on Luke (Ehrenreich) and Emily (Dynevor), co-workers at a high-powered hedge fund firm who have recently gotten engaged. While they continue to keep the relationship a secret, dynamics between the pair get tense as both aim to achieve professional gains despite the costs.
In the trailer that was released Tuesday ahead of the film’s Oct. 13 streaming launch, Dyvenor’s Emily says, “We both can’t keep working here.” This leads Ehrenreich’s Luke to reply, “I’m not quitting.”
Later, Emily asks, “Why is it so hard to accept that I deserve that job?”
Eddie Marsan, Rich Sommer and Sebastian De Souza also star.

“Bridgerton” star Phoebe Dynevor and “Oppenheimer” actor Alden Ehrenreich star in the film, which unravels the complex relationship of a power-hungry couple contending for power at a cutthroat financial firm. “Fair Play” marks writer-director Chloe Domont’s debut feature film, following her time helming episodes of the HBO series “Ballers” and Showtime’s “Billions.” The film also stars Eddie Marsan (“Ray Donovan”), Rich Sommer (“Mad Men”) and Sebastian De Souza (“The Great”).
Following its premiere, “Fair Play” sparked a bidding war among several key distributors, including Searchlight and Neon.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “When a coveted promotion at a cutthroat financial firm arises, once supportive exchanges between lovers Emily (Dynevor) and Luke (Ehrenreich) begin to sour into something more sinister.

Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play” sparked one of the few bidding wars at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and Netflix has dropped the first trailer for all to see. At a festival where even seemingly surefire titles like “Cat Person” went without a buyer, “Fair Play” was snagged f0r $20 million from Netflix. That’s shy of the record $25 million that Apple paid for eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Coda,” but who’s counting?

“3 Body Problem,” a new Netflix sci-fi series from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, finally has a first teaser as Netflix announced on Saturday that the show will premiere in January 2024.
“As children, we fear the dark. Anything might be out there. The unknown troubles us,” an unseen man says in a voiceover. “There are those who say we should not inquire too closely, and, to who else might be living in that darkness, better not to know. But we continue to search. Life looks for life.”
As he speaks, the teaser flashes between scenes of people rioting, flashlights taking in a mysterious code that appears to be written in blood, a gnarled hand moving in water and a woman walking over lava. The clip then ends with dozens of what appear to be Roman soldiers being sucked into the sky.
