After a seven-year break, FX’s anthology series “Feud” is back with another installment of rivalry and gossip titled “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” telling the story of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and a high society New York City socialite group known as The Swans, which includes Babe Paley (Naomi Watts), Slim Keith (Diane Lane), C.Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny), Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart), Ann Woodward (Demi Moore) and Joanne Carson (Molly Ringwald). The previous season of the Ryan Murphy docudrama that starred Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis nabbed 18 Emmy Award nominations and two wins. The film charts 30 years in the lives of visionary architect László Toth and his wife, Erzsébet, who flee post-war Europe in 1947 and witness the birth of modern America. László initially endures poverty and indignity, but the architect’s genius soon catches the attention of charming industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, whose dark influence threatens to destroy everything László and his wife have built.
The cast is completed by Raffey Cassidy (“White Noise”), Isaach De Bankolé (“Casino Royale”), Alessandro Nivola (“The Many Saints of Newark”), Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac Vol I”), Emma Laird (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jonathan Hyde (“Titanic”) and Peter Polycarpou...

Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
Amsterdam may be named after one place, but it spans the globe and multiple decades. David O. Russell wrote and directed the 20th Century Studios and New Regency comic historical mystery, which opened in October and is now streaming on HBO Max.
Russell directed Bale to his Oscar for The Fighter and again in American Hustle. Bale this time plays Dr. Burt Berendson, a doctor who repairs faces damaged by war and other accidents. His partner is lawyer Harold Woodman, Esq. (John David Washington), with whom he served in World War I. In 1933 New York, the daughter of one of their former war generals asks them to perform an autopsy. They become embroiled in a murder mystery that involves their time in the war too.

Russell, in “Amsterdam.” The pair has worked together frequently in films like “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Joy,” with Becker earning an Oscar nomination for their collaboration on “American Hustle” in 2014. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

I came to production design as someone who has always loved movies. I also loved art, design, architecture and photography, so discovering that I could have a career that combined all my loves was one of the greatest moments of my life. I have a realism-based approach to filmmaking — most of the worlds I create are fictional, but within the context of the film my goal is to make them feel real, grounded, worn, authentic. If a director wants a stylized or surreal approach I would need to find a way to dirty it up and add imperfections to […]

David O. Russell's latest film, "Amsterdam," features an ensemble chockablock full of amazing talent. The all-star line up consists of Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Chris Rock, Zoe Saldaña, Anya Taylor-Joy, Michael Shannon, Taylor Swift, Timothy Olyphant, Alessandro Nivola, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Mike Myers, and Robert De Niro.
Set in the 1930s, "Amsterdam" focuses on three friends who witness a murder and, as is generally the case in these crime drama-type of scenarios, then become suspects themselves. In the process of trying to clear their names, they accidentally uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history. Teasing the fact that the film is based on true events, one doesn't need to know the actual history to know that "Amsterdam" will be a whirlwind of a ride. Just based on trailers released, the chemistry between Bale, Robbie, and Washington is enough to make a person entirely invested.

If it’s become easy to forget the extent of Lena Dunham’s talent it is, maybe, in direct proportion to how purely inescapable she was not even ten years ago. “She” encompassing both the work—Tiny Furniture as tempest in a teapot, then Girls as full-blown lightning rod—and person, which most struggled to separate; the writer-director-star-subject combo had a way of blurring distinction. Sharp Stick arrives, then, as it should: not as declaration of intent or screed against those who obsessed over her every step, but far more simply an expression of talent that’s lain dormant. It’s also plainly funny, much in that microscopic, oddball-observational way a character on Girls calling Norman Reedus their favorite actor was funny.
Whether or not it helps that I liked Sharp Stick a good deal, Dunham is an immensely generous interview subject. Our conversation below spans particulars of Sharp Stick‘s production,...

“Ratched” is the latest collaboration between Sarah Paulson and mega-producer Ryan Murphy. The Netflix drama series explores the backstory of the enigmatic Nurse Mildred Ratched from “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” a role that won Louise Fletcher an Oscar in 1976. Paulson plays a young Ratched in the 1940s, scheming her way into becoming the head nurse at a psychiatric hospital in order to set free her murderous brother, Edmund (Finn Wittrock). Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with six Emmy contenders from the horror drama.
Paulson is not the only award-winning actress in the cast of “Ratched.” She is supported by Judy Davis as a fellow nurse, Betsy Bucket, Cynthia Nixon as Gwendolyn Briggs, a press secretary who becomes Mildred’s love interest and Sharon Stone as an heiress out for revenge. Sophie Okonedo has a recurring guest role as a patient with dissociative identity disorder. Other stars...

Production designer Judy Becker went into her first meeting about “Ratched” with her own concepts for the visual design of the show, but producer Ryan Murphy had other ideas in mind. Considering “Ratched” is a prequel to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Becker researched not only the film but mental institutions of the ’40s, envisioning a grittier realism than what we would ultimately see in the show. “The first thing Ryan said was, ‘This is gonna look nothing like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” says Becker in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “He wanted it to look very rich and lavish and the hospital to look like a hotel that had been converted to a psychiatric hospital.” Watch the full video interview above.

Bold and vibrant. Glitz and glamour. Spectacular locations. Those words have become synonymous with the world of Ryan Murphy. The stories might be vastly different, but audiences across the worlds of TV and film know a Ryan Murphy set when they see one.

One of the first things viewers notice about Ryan Murphy‘s “Ratched” is the colors. The costumes and sets of Netflix’s series are bright, lively and full of life, a direct contrast with the film that inspired it, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975). As “Ratched” costume designer Rebecca Guzzi explains to Gold Derby in our TV Costume Designers Panel (watch above), “Ryan from the first meeting was very adamant that he did not want what was featured so prominently in ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ — this really bleached, institutionalized, void of any color palette, both in the costumes and the sets. We are gonna lead up to that, but we don’t want to start there.”

The shocking drama and dark camp of Mart Crowley’s play “The Boys in the Band,” which first bowed off-Broadway in 1968, is hard to top. Filmmaker William Friedkin first brought this two-act stage drama about a group of out-gay male friends to the big screen in 1970, giving audiences a peek behind the velvet curtain of homosexual social life. “Terrifying” is a word often ascribed to this play, written before Stonewall and before AIDS, as it exposed the damage and self-loathing gay men felt their in their then-little corner of the world. And, in the 1960s, the play had to speak to all the hidden issues of the time surrounding LGBTQ life.
“The Boys in the Band,” thankfully, doesn’t have to do that anymore. And it doesn’t have to feel terrifying. It’s 1968, and while gay men are largely regarded as an aberration by polite society, the LGBTQ population...

Prior to Friday’s premiere there were warning signs that “Ratched” might be more of a Ryan Murphy camp-fest than a sincere prequel to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” An eye-popping color palette, with certain scenes completely bathed in red or green, stood in stark contrast to the white and gray backdrop of Milos Forman’s 1975 movie.
Explicit, darkly comic threats over the theft of a breakroom peach took the place of Nurse Ratched’s passive-aggressive manipulation of patients. And the villainous character’s symbolic place in popular culture as a representative of corruption and dehumanization within industrialized medicine, especially for anyone reliant on in-patient care, didn’t appear as important to the new series as ghoulish frights.

Boasting a 15-year career as a set decorator, Matthew Flood Ferguson found his first major TV design job in Netflix miniseries Hollywood, on which he took a deep dive into the minutiae of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the starry drama is set in Post-World War II Tinseltown, following a group of actors and filmmakers who will do whatever it takes to realize their dreams. Spotlighting biases toward race, gender and sexuality that exist to this day, it considers what might have happened, had inequality in entertainment been addressed decades ago.
First working with Murphy on the 2006 film Running with Scissors, Ferguson subsequently joined the prolific creator on a number of projects, including The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, getting one of his first opportunities in production design on the upcoming Ratched. “Judy Becker, the production designer, had to leave to do another project,...

In “American Crime Story’s” second season, creator Ryan Murphy explored the social significance of the murder of legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace (Édgar Ramírez) by spree-killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss) outside his Miami mansion in 1997. In particular, Murphy contrasts the high and low worlds of Versace and Cunanan in Miami, the difficulty of coming out of the closet in the ’90s, and the culture’s underlying homophobia.
Visually, it was a tour-de-force for production designer Judy Becker (“Feud: Bette and Joan”) and costume designer Lou Eyrich (a three-time Emmy winner for “American Horror Story”). And Miami’s South Beach became the visual epicenter. “It’s about the clash between the high Versace world and the low Cunanan world,” Becker said. “But then within Cunanan’s world there were the contrasts of being taken care of by sugar daddies and being on his own.”
The clothes, too, reflected the difference between Versace,...

"The Furniture," by Daniel Walber, is our weekly series on Production Design. You can click on the images to see them in magnified detail.
Before we get started, let’s all share a brief moment of resentment that Judy Becker didn’t win a production design Emmy last night for Feud. Boo.
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled episode of The Furniture. Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru, the character actor otherwise known as Herbert Lom. He fled Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939 for Britain, where he would have a long career in both film and television. He appeared in three Best Production Design nominees: El Cid, Spartacus, and Gambit. I will be writing about none of them.
Instead, here’s some love for the design of the films for which he is remembered most widely. Lom played Police Commissioner Charles Dreyfus, the long-suffering boss of Inspector Clouseau,...

The Upside Down of “Stranger Things” became an apt metaphor for this divisive year, and, maybe not so strangely, “Stranger Things,” along with several other Best Drama Emmy contenders, offered unifying themes to combat the forces of oppression, hate, and turmoil.
These included “Westworld,” “The Crown,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Feud: Bette and Joan,” and “Big Little Lies.” And, not surprisingly, they all offered stellar craftsmanship in support of their unifying themes.
“The Crown”
Showrunner Peter Morgan told IndieWire that his biggest takeaway has been the realization of the necessary bond between the monarchy and Parliament. “Sometimes the monarchy screws up and sometimes the politicians screw up,” he said. “And it takes one or the other to fix the problem.”

When it comes to the Emmys, gender representation has always been a bit of a struggle behind the scenes. In non-acting categories, especially when it comes to technical awards, there’s a lack of female representation that’s persisted throughout the industry. But this year, there are bright spots to be found.
This is not a complete representation of all of the year’s nominees — there were many other female nominees whose work was noteworthy — but here is a selection of the strides women made in 2017, often in categories largely dominated by men.
Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance
“BoJack Horseman” (Netflix): Kristen Schaal as Sarah Lynn in “That’s Too Much, Man!” “F Is For Family” (Netflix): Mo Collins as Ginny, Jimmy Fitzsimmons, Lex, Ben, and Cutie Pie in the episode “Pray Away” “The Simpsons” (Fox): Nancy Cartwright as Bart Simpson in “Looking for Mr. Goodbart”
Fun fact:...

Last speaking with Deadline in 2015—when two Oscar-nominated films, Carol and Joy, were released—production designer Judy Becker described similar challenges this time around with regard to her first television project, Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-nominated Feud: Bette and Joan. Both those films were New York period pieces requiring convincing exterior locations, and collaborating with Murphy for the first time, there was a similar, if not more exacting demand for period…...

HBO’s sci-fi western “Westworld,” is the heavy favorite to win for contemporary and fantasy production design. The question is whether two nominations for both its western theme park and futuristic programming center actually doubles its chances — or cancels it out. Competition comes from the dystopian minimalism of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the richly Gothic “Penny Dreadful” (nominated last year), and the Vatican beauty of “The Young Pope.”
Meanwhile, the royalty glam of Peter Morgan’s “The Crown” is the heavy favorite to win for period production design, with competition from the Old Hollywood trappings of “Feud: Bette and Joan,” the nightmarish ’80s sci-fi of “Stranger Things,” the alt history of “The Man in the High Castle” (nominated last year), and perennial contender, “Masters of Sex.”
The Dueling Dystopias

Yesterday, Fox Searchlight began the process of creating excitement for one of their big Oscar hopefuls this year. They did that by dropping the first Trailer for Battle of the Sexes, a pseudo biopic that also could be the rare recent sports related movie to score with the Academy. Done properly, the story contained here is big time awards bait. That all remains to be seen, obviously, but the possibilities here are certainly strong. The Trailer pretty much suggests as much too. You’ll be able to see it at the end of this article, as per the usual, but first…a bit of analysis! The film is a look at the legendary tennis match between champions Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). King was the current number one player in the world in 1973, while Riggs was a former champ and basically a side show act at the time.

“Feud: Bette and Joan” is a TV show built on pure gossipy indulgence; one that’s inclined to believe the most juicy stories about its characters, but not in a bad way. Historical reports about the truth of what happened on the set of “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” and surrounding events are up for dispute, so instead we have the popular myths surrounding Bette Davis and Joan Crawford’s legendary — and last — on-screen collaboration put on display by Ryan Murphy and his team. The end result is at times simultaneously obvious, essential, and not nearly as campy as you might expect.
And it turns out, that’s for the best.

"The Furniture" is our weekly series on Production Design. Here's Daniel Walber on Joy, now available on DVD and Bluray
It seems impossible that production designer Judy Becker has only received a single Oscar nomination, if not supremely unfair as well. At the very least, she should have snagged a second nomination for Carol. Her resume includes such diverse triumphs as We Need to Talk About Kevin, Brokeback Mountain, Shame and I’m Not There, as well as a neat early credit as a set dresser on Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. And so it seems totally appropriate that Becker is the first production designer to merit a repeat appearance in 'The Furniture'.
Becker’s most fruitful collaboration has been with David O. Russell. She's worked on every one of his features since The Fighter and she earned her lone Oscar nomination for American Hustle. Her sets for Joy, particularly...

Sandy Powell on the set of CinderellaSome people rush to movies if their favorite movie star's face is prominent on the poster. Others swear allegiance to directors. Obsessive cinephiles go for all sorts of reasons. One of ours at The Film Experience is Sandy Powell. If she's the costume designer, we're there, no questions asked. We sat through The Tempest (2010) just for her and trust me that that's devotion.
Meeting her in person earlier this season to talk Carol and Cinderella, which brought her her 11th and 12th Oscar nominations and could well bring her a 4th Oscar, was a personal joy. I had talked to her once before by phone but in person we were able to look at costume stills together and had a great conversation. This cinematic Mvp was a fun, lively, and personable interviewee. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did.

We're almost done with the Oscar Correlative categories in the Film Bitch Awards. Then it's on to the silly & fun but still seriously chosen "extra" categories. The big Oscar question this year is "Can Emmanuel Lubezki" win a third consecutive Oscar for The Revenant. He's dominated the category the past two years with Gravity (2013) and Birdman (2014). It won't be the longest consecutive winning streak ever -- that belongs to Walt Disney who won consistently in short film categories for seemingly ever in the early days of Oscar -- but it will be the single longest streak in modern history if he pulls it off. But the category already has something for the record books:...

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.
