Exclusive: Lily Gladstone is set to reteam with Morrisa Maltz on Jazzy, a companion piece and follow-up to their acclaimed indie drama The Unknown Country, released by Music Box Films, which brought Gladstone a Gotham Award last fall. In addition to starring, Gladstone will exec produce, along with the team at Duplass Brothers Productions.
While The Unknown Country followed Gladstone’s character — the grieving Tana — on a lonely road trip across America, it also introduced the scene-stealing character of Jazzy, based on and played by Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux, a young Oglala Lakota girl growing up in South Dakota. The roles are flipped in Jazzy, with Shangreaux taking center stage and Gladstone supporting her narrative journey. Shot over six years, the film sees Jazzy and her peers grow up on camera as they navigate the space between childhood and young adulthood. When her best friend moves away, Jazzy experiences both a...

Exclusive: Hulu is on the verge of pulling off a neat trick: a deal sources place around $2 million for The Untitled Amazing Johnathan Documentary. The Ben Berman-directed film premiered last Friday at The Marc, competing in the U.S. Documentary Competition.
The film charts the changing journey for Berman after he began a docu called The Amazing Johnathan, about a uniquely deranged magician who built a career out of shock and deception in the 1980s. After Johnathan is diagnosed with a terminal heart condition and given one year to live, he’s forced to retire his act and Berman’s film seemed kaput. Three years later, Johnathan didn’t die, and Berman filmed the illusionist on an epic comeback tour. And then things happened that led the filmmaker to question what is truth and what is illusion.
Multiple suitors were in the mix.

Piano virtuoso, serial collaborator and self-declared genius, Jason Beck is a singular figure on the music scene. Fully immersed in his outsized alter ego of Chilly Gonzales, this Canadian cult star blurs the lines between rapper and classical composer, performance artist and punk provocateur. He also has strong Berlin connections, making German first-time director Philipp Jedicke's documentary portrait Shut Up and Play the Piano a natural choice for a Berlinale world premiere.
