On the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel, we will be posting one full movie every other day throughout the week, giving viewers the chance to watch them entirely free of charge. The Free Movie of the Day we have for you today is the sci-fi comedy Australiens, and you can watch it over on the YouTube channel linked above, or you can just watch it in the embed at the top of this article.
Directed by Joe Bauer, who also crafted the script with Rita Artmann, Australiens has the following synopsis (courtesy of Bauer): At the age of 10, Australian-born Andi Gibson had what she describes as a close encounter with a flying saucer. Naturally, everyone assumed she was bonkers. That is until one notable evening, 17 years later, when an airborne extra-terrestrial armada launches a nation-wide assault on Andi’s home country and at the same time, for unspecified reasons, kidnaps her mother.

When Jon Favreau decrying a department-store Santa to the mother of all snowball fights in Central Park.
But it’s this shot that arguably defines the movie, both in tone and premise. Ferrell — then still Saturday Night Live’s golden boy, tentatively making the breakthrough to the big screen — as Buddy the human elf, squeezes himself into a tiny desk next to Santa’s actual elves (played by children). It’s a study in comedic contrasts and, aptly for the star of Old School, all achieved using the oldest of old-school techniques: forced-perspective. In other words, Ferrell may look like he’s sitting next to those kids, but he’s actually several metres in front of them, with cleverly chosen camera angles doing the rest. “All the techniques I learned about from reading Starlog magazine or Cinefex, I wanted to try them,” Favreau tells Empire. “As for the forced-perspective, we were doing our homework.

The creative mandate for the VFX team on “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” was to deliver a premium film with a singing and dancing CG character that both adults and children could believe was real.
Based on the children’s book by Bernard Weber, the film follows Josh (Winslow Fegley), a young boy struggling to fit in, his dad (Scoot McNairy) and stepmother (Constance Wu). Upon moving to the city, the family finds out their new home is inhabited by a singing crocodile named Lyle, voiced by Shawn Mendes.
Josh Gordon, who co-directed the film with Will Speck, says it was important that Lyle didn’t come off mean or menacing. Gordon explains, “That’s part of the character — he scares people — but Lyle is somebody who people judge by his cover. They don’t understand that underneath he is incredibly soulful and sweet.”

This story about “The Mandalorian” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The second season of Disney+’s The Mandalorian debuted in the fall of 2020 in the throes of a worldwide pandemic and an unprecedented presidential election. But it still managed to be one of the biggest TV sensations of the year, providing loyal fans some clarity on burning questions: Will Mando take off his helmet ever again? What is Baby Yoda’s real name? Will any Jedi make key appearances?
The eight-episode season opened firing on all cylinders with “The Marshal,” an aspect-ratio-bending mini-adventure written and directed by creator Jon Favreau, employing a grand set piece that sits among the Star Wars franchise’s most ambitious eye-poppers: a tense standoff in which the Mandalorian, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), agrees to help town marshal Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) get rid of a livestock-destroying cave...

Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian” returned for Season 2 on Disney+, boasting new and improved virtual production innovations, while introducing creatures such as the menacing Krayt Dragon and ice spiders. The tech highlight, though, was the launch of StageCraft 2.0, the virtual production game changer from Industrial Light & Magic. Offering a new in-house render engine called Helios, the immersive LED wall digital backlot at Manhattan Beach Studios in L.A. generated cooler-looking digital environments in real-time, and continued the illusion of being on location with interactive lighting and perspective-accurate camera tracking.
“Helios gave us higher resolution and more image fidelity,” said Ilm VFX supervisor Richard Bluff. “The assets that were going into the environments could not only be rendered in real-time on the wall, but could also be easily rendered in any one of our render engines that we use in post-production. This allowed a lot of flexibility on the back end.

“The Midnight Sky” and “Soul” were the big film winners at the 19th annual Ves Awards, which were presented on Tuesday night by the Visual Effects Society.
George Clooney’s cautionary sci-fi drama “The Midnight Sky” won two awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the Ves category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Winners in the category have gone on to win the Oscar 10 times in the past 18 years, but the last film to do so was “The Jungle Book” in 2017.
The Pixar film “Soul,” which was shortlisted but not nominated for the VFX Oscar, won five awards, the most of any film or television program. In addition to Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature, it won for its animated character, created environment, effects simulation and virtual cinematography.

George Clooney’s existential sci-fi drama, “The Midnight” Sky,” moved a step closer in the VFX Oscar race Tuesday, taking top honors at the 19th annual Ves Awards. The Netflix film (with VFX by Framestore) also earned the model award for the Aether spacecraft. Strangely, though, the unforgettable Ballet of Blood scene, containing simulated zero-g and remarkable liquid simulation, wasn’t even nominated, yet this highlight could prove decisive if “The Midnight Sky” wins the Oscar.
But that’s a big if in this wide open race that also includes Christopher Nolan’s time-inverted “Tenet” (which is finally available on the Academy’s online voting portal) and dark horse “Love and Monsters,” with its terrific array of Ray Harryhausen-like creatures. In the last four years, the Ves has only aligned with the Academy once (for “The Jungle Book”). Then again, the Ves nod could be enough to put “The Midnight Sky...

It’s truly a measure of the pandemic that the 19th annual Ves Awards (to be held virtually on April 6) was dominated by Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” with 13 nominations (topped by photoreal episode). Like the Oscar shortlist, there was an absence of big budget, VFX-intensive studio films. But, truth be told, Season 2 of Jon Favreau’s engaging “Star Wars” bounty hunter series offered the industry’s most innovative tech (wrapped around Industrial Light & Magic’s improved StageCraft virtual production system).
Pixar’s “Soul” was the top animation contender with five nominations, while the feature competition was split between “Project Power,” the Netflix superhero film, Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” (which streamed on HBO Max), and Disney’s live-action “Mulan” (which streamed on Disney+), each garnering three nominations.

Shortly after HBO released Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, the Golden Globe nominations were unveiled and its considered a surprise that the series was virtually shut out. After the long wait, the truncated final season arrived this year and rather than take a victory lap, it was showered with complaints.
When the series, adapting George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels, arrived, people were stunned at its scope, sweep, violence, sensuality, and strong performances. You weren’t sure who to root for as the status quo kept shifting and beloved characters kept dying in unexpected, messy ways.
Phrases and names seeped into public consciousness just as the series began exhausting the extant prose and then charged ahead while Martin struggled to finish the current novel, in the cycle. Series Executive Producers/Writers/Directors David Benioff & D.B. Weiss got direction from Martin and then increasingly veered off in their own direction.

At the 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, “Game of Thrones'” craft dominance was a testament to both its cultural impact and cumulative excellence. The HBO juggernaut grabbed 10 awards (out of 18 nominations) for its final season. The series won for casting, fantasy/sci-fi costumes, editing, main title design, music composition, makeup (non-prosthetic), sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt coordination — but significantly, the editing victory for “The Long Night” is the key predictor for next Monday’s outstanding drama Emmy win, since five of the last seven winners have gone on to take the big prize.
The series’ final season was capped by the extraordinary work of costume designer Michele Clapton and the VFX team led by supervisor Joe Bauer. The horrific sight of Dany (Emilia Clarke) turning into the Mad Queen in Season 8 of “Game of Thrones” and vaporizing King’s Landing atop Drogon became the ultimate expression of destruction for the series. Indeed, the “Battle of King’s Landing” from Episode 5 (“The Bells”) dwarfed all previous annihilation, with the VFX stepping up by taking its cue from London after the Blitz and the fire bombing of Dresden toward the end of World War II.
King’s Landing finally comes crashing down during the firebombing, the Clegane brothers (Rory McCann and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) perish from their battle, and the Red Keep castle collapses on Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). “So, after seven years of building out the physical and sometimes emotional world of ‘Thrones’ through use of visual effects, in ‘The Bells,’ it was time to add an exclamation point,” said Joe Bauer, the lead VFX supervisor.

It was a very good year for VFX in television, as evidenced by the five nominated shows in the special visual effects category. “Game of Thrones,” “The Man in the High Castle,” “The Orville,” “Star Trek: Discovery” and “The Umbrella Academy” all showcased truly cutting-edge, imaginative storytelling elements added by artists during the post-production process. Relying on the latest technological advances and tools allowed the teams behind these series to better plan out and then execute everything from elaborately choreographed battles in outer space to fire-breathing dragons, to the destruction of the Statue of Liberty.

Sean Bean is reuniting with his Game of Thrones family on screen, though not in the way supporters of House Stark have been hoping. An official reunion special, featuring major members of the HBO drama’s cast (including Bean), was filmed in Belfast earlier this year and will be included as a special feature in an upcoming box set of the complete series, EW reports. It was previously believed that the special would air on HBO, but the network has confirmed this to be untrue.

"Game of Thrones" fans obsessed with the whereabouts of John Snow’s direwolf Ghost are in luck, because the animal is set to return in a big way for the HBO fantasy series’ final season.
VFX supervisor Joe Bauer confirmed to HuffPo that Ghost will reemerge in "Games of Thrones" Season 8. The character wasn’t seen at all in Season 7 and was only mentioned once, when Sansa told Jon it was unfair to stay in the North and "sit and wait for him like Ghost."
"Oh, you’ll see him again. He has a fair amount of screen time in Season 8," Bauer told HuffPo about Ghost. "He does show up…he’s very present and does some pretty cool things in Season 8."...

Usually, when a hit show goes to the dogs, it’s a bad thing.
But in a recent interview, Game of Thrones visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer says that Jon Snow’s direwolf, Ghost, “has a fair amount of screen time” in the series’ upcoming final season.
Bauer told Huffington Post that the massive white dog, who hasn’t been seen since Season 6 of the HBO drama, will certainly show up before the end of Season 8. And that seems like a very good thing, considering that Ghost’s master likely will need all the help he can get to defeat...

Game of Thrones has long featured a rotating cast of characters, characters who have come in and out of play throughout the drama's epic run. One missing—and fan-favorite—character will return to the fold for the upcoming final season. We're talking about Ghost, people. Yep, Jon Snow's direwolf will return in a major way in the eighth and final season. "Oh, you'll see him again. He has a fair amount of screen time in season eight," Joe Bauer, the visual effects supervisor on Game of Thrones, told HuffPost. Viewers last saw Ghost in season six. As for what he's been up to and what kind of action he gets into in season eight, that remains to be seen. "He's very...

As television continues to provide portals into fantastic, compelling worlds outside the constraints of space, time and physics, it’s increasingly vital that those imaginative environs — speculative futures ranging from cyberpunk cityscapes to colonizing spacecraft to high-tech A.I. theme parks to an ancient and sprawling fantasy landscape and an insidious dimension encroaching the recent past — be as utterly convincing as possible. As the Emmy nominees in visual effects so effectively demonstrate, a major factor in asking an audience to suspend their disbelief is delivering inviting, sumptuously crafted alternate realities viewers can readily believe in.

“Audacious escalation” could be the mantra for “The Game of Thrones” visual effects team, which has racked up five consecutive Emmys. And they’ve upped their game for “Beyond the Wall” from the penultimate seventh season, with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) taking on an impossible mission to go after the mystical Night King (Vladimir Furdik), massively outnumbered and trapped on a frozen lake. Among the VFX highlights: a zombie polar bear, an army of zombie wights, and dragon power.
“Beyond the Wall” reached a record 2,106 VFX shots. Although director Alan Taylor wanted to shoot the battle of the frozen lake in Iceland, it wasn’t logistically possible so the VFX team added the Icelandic mountains to the Belfast rock quarry set, and supplied CG snow and dragon fire to everything else that was shot practically in camera.

Having been through seven increasingly audacious seasons of HBO flagship series Game of Thrones, visual effects producer Steve Kullback always looks at a new season from the same perspective: “Geez, how the hell am I going to do this?” Working with “no-holds-barred” creatives David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with VFX supervisor Joe Bauer, the collaborators always tend to come to the same conclusion about the road ahead: “Well, that’s amazing, but obviously it’s unproducible.” And yet the innovative Game of Thrones team forges ahead.
With each new season, Kullback and Bauer have seen the volume and complexity of their work double—even as the episode count per season continues to shrink. “Steve’s line is that the work doubles in relation to the size of the dragons, who also double in size from season to season, up until Season 7,” Bauer explains.

With astonishing processing power and top-notch teams that know how to create high-end visual effects on a tight budget and timeline, vfx artists routinely turn in shots that thrill TV audiences. But visual effects must also support story and characters in invisible ways. And there’s even resistance to becoming a show known for its effects.
“They didn’t want this to be a vfx-driven show,” says Paul Graff, senior visual-effects producer for Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and a four-time Emmy winner. “They wanted vfx that were about the story, which is one that has things like monsters in it.”
Some of the most resonant effects just make things look slightly askew.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” from Weta Digital could well be on its way to the elusive VFX Oscar after winning four Ves trophies Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton (including the top feature prize). Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” won for supporting VFX, Pixar’s “Coco” earned four awards (including VFX for animation), and “Game of Thrones” took home five awards (including VFX for TV).
The “Apes” finale, directed by Matt Reeves, benefited from a Shakespearean performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar, with Weta working its wizardry in much harsher conditions for the performance-captured animation. Not surprisingly, “Apes” additionally won for Caesar, the effects simulations for the thrilling avalanche, and compositing. However, although both “Rise” and “Dawn” captured Ves prizes, neither won the Oscar, so “War” is not a certainty in its race with “Blade Runner 2049.”

Last night, the Visual Effects Society handed out their awards at their annual gathering. It was mainly a good night for The Jungle Book, which took the top prize, known as Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. It beat back Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, while at the Academy Awards, it’ll be up against Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It was an expected win, but one that was eagerly awaited to try and figure out the Oscar category of Best Visual Effects. The Jungle Book ended up with five prizes in total, easily besting the rest of the bunch. As mentioned above, this top award ties directly into the Visual Effects category at the Oscars. Out today is the Blu-ray edition of Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season from HBO Home Entertainment.
We previously reviewed the Digital HD version of the season here but there are new elements to consider with the box set.
The vast majority of Digital HD releases do not come with the bonus features, extra, and Easter Eggs we have come to know and love about the disc format. As a result, the Digital HD version is a nice add-on for on-the-go viewing, but the complete immersive experience, the special features add interviews, behind-the-scenes information, commentary, and deleted scenes to enhance your appreciation of the material. This season set, though, does come with some, but all, the extras found on the Blu-ray box set.

Nominated for an Emmy in Outstanding Special Visual Effects, Melenhorst and his team at Iloura delivered photoreal shots for the episode, working in particular on the episode.s battle sequence, "combining 3D visual effects and hand animation to realize the production.s vision," according to a statement.
"The battle that was created by Iloura required numerous collisions between photoreal horses and riders, 3,000-strong armies and close-up shots of live-action actors and sets composited with CG humans and animals and massive crowd simulations. Hundreds of assets — CG armoury, weapons, flags, saddlery, body parts and environmental assets such as blood, mud, smoke, fire and mist — were also needed to augment the plate photography.

The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones season six, Battle of the Bastards, was one of the most acclaimed in the show's history.
Centering around a large battle sequence straight out of Braveheart, the episode featured charging cavalry, giants, and a cast of thousands - or so it looked.
The VFX artists working on the battle sequence included a team from Iloura.s Melbourne office, who used a mix of VFX and hand-crafted animation techniques to realize the director's vision for the ep, led by VFX supervisor Glenn Melenhorst.
Iloura was selected to work on the episode after presenting the show.s VFX producer and supervisor, Steve Kullback and Joe Bauer, with a series of tests presenting photoreal CG horses and riders colliding with other horses, rendered from various points of view..

Another day, another fascinating look at the visual effects of "Game of Thrones". Hot off the heels of a focus on the effects of the battle at Hardhome, a new visual interview with VFX Supervisor Joe Bauer has hit the web. Thanks to io9 for interviewing Bauer and putting this video together. Bauer makes the case for going digital over practical in certain situations and in the television environment, his point makes some sense. Digital allows the directors and artists to completely alter sequences that would be prohibitively expensive to reshoot if done practically or the production simply wouldn't have time to do over. Practical effects will almost always produce the better end product, but on the television budget and timeline, the way in which digital effects open up the storytelling possibilities is inarguable. readmore postid="182401" Seeing the evolution of the dragons as they have continued to grow over five...
