Fox is foreclosing on Housebroken.
The broadcast network has opted to cancel the animated comedy after a two-season run.
From creators Gabrielle Allan, Jennifer Crittenden and Clea DuVall and featuring a star-studded voice cast that included Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte and Maria Bamford, the second season of the comedy wrapped in August 2023.
The cancellation, however, is not a surprise considering that animated shows take longer to produce, and if Fox wanted to bring back Housebroken, production on a third season should have begun months ago.
Sources say the network was pleased with the show’s creative, but the lackluster ratings — season two averaged a mere 1 million viewers among the all-important advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic — gave Fox executives little choice but to cancel it.
Fox owns the show and produces it in-house via its deal with Bento Box Entertainment, the animation company behind Bob’s Burgers.

Like Google, Netflix has evolved from a Silicon Valley venture to a legitimate verb in the cultural lexicon. Over a decade after expanding from DVD-by-mail to streaming service, and seven since debuting its first original series with House of Cards, Netflix still dominates the online TV landscape. While competitors like Warner Bros., Disney, and Apple certainly vie for our time with their own in-house programs, the sheer inundation of Netflix originals requires its very own examination.

Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.
Co-written by Drew and Bri LeRose, the film is a reimagining the origin story of iconic Batman villain The Joker, starring Drew as painfully unfunny aspiring clown and closeted trans girl grappling with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s sole comedy program, in a world where comedy has been outlawed. In an entertainment landscape dominated by intellectual property franchising made at increasingly higher budgets, it can sometimes feel like fresh storytelling ideas are considered too risky to be properly told, that only those films with majority mass-market appeal ever have a shot of finding their audience.

Like so many of the comic-book supervillains that populate it, writer-director Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker arrives with an origin story. An “autobiographical transgender coming-of-age story,” the film stars Drew herself as Joker the Harlequin, an aspiring trans comedian who moves to a dystopic Gotham City and finds herself navigating both her own transition and the world of illicit underground comedy. The characters and settings are largely parodies drawn from DC Comics, but Warner Bros. wasn’t in on the joke, and after the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2022, the studio sent Drew a letter threatening legal action, and all future screenings were canceled.
After a long period of further delays and secret screenings of the film as Drew sought to make sure that she was fully protected from legal action under fair use has allowed for a fully legal release—complete...

Vera Drew is cementing her status as “The People’s Joker.”
The former “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” editor directed, co-wrote, edited, and stars in the superhero-parody film that made waves at TIFF 2022 (where IndieWire saw it) before being acquired by Los Angeles-based distributor Altered Innocence in December 2023. Now, thanks in part to social media hashtag-campaign #FreethePeoplesJoker, “The People’s Joker” is indeed free for a North-American theatrical release.
Drew portrays the title character in the queer coming-of-age origin story that reimagines “Batman” villain The Joker as a trans comedian. Joker the Harlequin (Drew) grapples with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s Ucb (United Clown Bureau) Live, the one government-sanctioned late-night sketch show that is the only platform for rising comedians since Gotham City otherwise outlawed comedy. (Get it? Ucb like Upright Citizens Brigade?)

For a little while it seemed The People’s Joker might be lost to time, a new generation’s Day the Clown Cried or, if you like, Promises Written in Water. Despite an initial screening in TIFF’s Midnight Madness program, director Vera Drew pulled her film from subsequent showings over rights issues. Yet it came to light this December that The People’s Joker would open spring 2024 via Altered Innocence, and ahead of its April 5 debut at the IFC Center (with nationwide bookings to follow), there’s a trailer for the feature a PR email informs us “is in no way created by, endorsed by, or affiliated with DC Comics or any of its related companies.”

"Now you must journey inside yourself..." It's here! Finally! Altered Innocence has revealed the official trailer for a controversial, revolutionary, one-of-a-kind film called The People's Joker. This premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival a few years ago and after earning tons of buzz at the fest, Warner Bros and DC tried to shut it down and stop anyone from watching it (due to copyright claims). But they beat the system! Now it's finally getting a proper theatrical release this April. An aspiring clown grappling with her gender identity combats a fascistic caped crusader. The People's Joker is a trans twist on DC's characters, starring Vera Drew as a new clown of mayhem called Joker the Harlequin. Vats of feminizing chemicals, sexy cartoon interludes, scarecrow psychiatrists, CGI Lorne Michaels, and psychedelic gender dysphoria all play supporting roles. Made by Vera Drew and using her own life experiences as a basis for the film,...

The People’s Joker will be laughing its way to the big screen, with indie distributor Altered Innocence picking up the feature’s North American rights.
To start, the Los Angeles-based Altered Innocence will put The People’s Joker in New York’s IFC Center April 5, with more markets to come at a later date. Its initial engagement at IFC is one week, with the possibility of extending. Though it’s a small distribution plan for now, it’s noteworthy as for a time it was unclear if the project would land a home.
Filmmaker Vera Drew directed, co-wrote, edited and stars in the DC parody feature as Joker the Harlequin, an aspiring clown coming to terms with her gender identity as a trans woman. Though it borrows from the fantastical world of DC Comics, the coming-of-age story also draws from Drew’s life.

Drew withdrew “The People’s Joker” from 2022 TIFF due to rights issues, as announced at the time. The controversy led to the hashtag campaign #FreethePeoplesJoker, with the film debuting in the U.

Chicago –At the the just wrapped up Fall 2023 Chicago Humanities Festival, a few laughs (and tears) were had at an appearance by comedian Aparna Nancherla. She has a new book entitled “Unreliable Narrator: Me, Myself and the Imposter Syndrome,” which takes readers on the journey of a stand-up comic and essayist who doesn’t feel she belongs doing what she does, but she’s able to express it.

“Unreliable Narrator” is a collection of essays that uses Aparna’s signature humor to illuminate an interior life, one constantly bossed around by her depression (whom she calls Brenda), laced with anxiety described like a horror movie full of jump-scares, and plagued by a love-hate relationship with her career as a painfully shy standup comedian. But that crippling self-doubt also comes with the gift of keen self-examination.

Chicago – Use the word “surely” in any conversation, such as “Surely …” and inevitably you’ll get the answer, “Blah Blah, and don’t call me Shirley.” One of a trio that came up with that famous riposte, David Zucker, was at the Chicago Humanities Festival as co-author of “Surely you Can’t be Serious: The True Story of Airplane!”
The book was written with the other two members of the legendary movie comedy creators nicknamed Zaz … for (David) Zucker, (Jim) Abrahams and (Jerry) Zucker. In 1980, the trio wrote and directed one of the most influential comedy movies of their generation, the deliciously funny farce “Airplane!,” forever changing comic sensibilities and satire. The book is a look back to a different time and place in American entertainment, and David Zucker appeared on its behalf as part of the ongoing Fall Chicago Humanities Festival on October 21st, 2023.

Plot: A brilliant but tightly wound, gameshow-obsessed young woman, Anne, and her estranged, train-wreck of a sister Jenny, must work together to help cover their mother’s gambling debts. When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide gameshow champion.
Review: I love quiz shows. I also love movies and series about quiz shows. Whether it be Robert Redford’s acclaimed Quiz Show, the subplot in Magnolia, or the long-running SNL sketch spoofing Celebrity Jeopardy, something is fascinating about trivia challenges and the people who participate in them. The new Hulu original Quiz Lady takes that concept and adds elements of various comedies, including road trips, raunchy humor, family dysfunction, and more. The result is a far more nuanced film than the trailers present, but one that is absolutely focused on being funny.

Remembering The Comedians Of Comedy, Netflix's First True Original Production (A Quasi-Oral History)
If I asked you to name the first original production from Netflix, what would you say? An educated guess might bring you to "House of Cards" or "Lilyhammer," and that's a fair assessment. While the former was Netflix's first piece of original programming produced specifically for the company's streaming service (released in February of 2013), the latter technically has the honor of being Netflix's first original streaming production (premiering on Netflix in February of 2012), even though it was only partially funded by Netflix and actually premiered in Norway first under the TV network NRK1.
But what if I told you that neither of these was the first true Netflix original? What if I told you Netflix produced their first original production even before they created the now-defunct Red Envelope Entertainment? Yes, before streaming, Netflix had a film financing and acquisition arm that shuttered in 2008 after investing in more than 100 films and...

The "Avatar: The Last Airbender" franchise has been experiencing a surge in popularity in recent years, what with the announcement of two different new TV projects and a planned film trilogy, the bouncing of the original series between different streaming homes as a subscription draw, the creation of a Nickelodeon division focused specifically on "Avatar"-related content, and the "Avatar: Braving the Elements" rewatch podcast hosted by Zuko and Korra themselves, Dante Basco, and Janet Varney. Finally, after many years of insufficient cultural and critical attention paid to what's inarguably one of the best and most beloved fantasy TV franchises of all time, it appears that the industry, the press, and the world at large are catching up to the greatness of Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko's creation.
Even so, a lot of that renewed attention has been directed towards "The Last Airbender," with its sequel series, "The Legend of Korra,...

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) made history as the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2022 Best Character Voice-Over ballot list below consists of a whopping 222 performances. Photo: 'Hard Cell' Female comedians are my favorite; especially those I can look up to. There is a myriad of examples that I could list for you, beginning with the talented Phoebe Waller-Bridge to the hilarious Maria Bamford. As someone who is also female, and aspiring to be a comedian and writer myself, I find many female comedians to be inspirational and be utter role models to me. With this said, whenever I see a successful female comedian starring (alongside writing and directing) as the lead in a film or series, my heart entirely skips a beat. This aspect is especially amplified in my soul when it comes to the film/series is all about the comedian in question. More specifically, examples of this involve ‘Fleabag’ and ‘Broad City’. These shows have been known to be loved by many and named to be critically acclaimed, and they’ve...

Netflix’s new series “Human Resources” is the hilarious adult animated spinoff of the wildly popular series “Big Mouth,” a show about the raunchy rites of puberty that plague preteens in the form of Hormone Monsters and Shame Demons. “Human Resources” expands this universe by shifting the spotlight to the creatures while continuing the trend of sophomoric humor, expository musical numbers, and an impressive lineup of voiceover cameos that have made “Big Mouth” a fan-favorite. But the show really shines when the employees leave the office and spend time on Earth with their human clients, navigating all of the emotions college admissions, marriage, careers, parenthood, and adulting throw at them.
It just takes a while to get there.

Where to Watch ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Okay’: Hulu (The series originally aired on Freeform.)
The pilot for “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” is still a marvel. What it accomplishes in such a short time — setting up a new family dynamic between Nicholas (Josh Thomas) and his two younger half-sisters (Kayla Cromer and Maeve Press) after their father dies unexpectedly — is paired so expertly with a perfect balance in tone. It’s more than your standard “there’s comedy in every tragedy” premise, where characters laugh through their grief. Watching that first episode, you can’t help but feel that something special is starting.
For two seasons, the intertwined lives of Nicholas, Matilda, and Genevieve powered their own emotional universe. Along with Nicholas’ eventual boyfriend Alex (Adam Faison), they formed the basis for the kind of show that could have easily stayed inside its cozy,...

It’s more than your standard “there’s comedy in every tragedy” premise, where characters laugh through their grief. Watching that first episode, you can’t help but feel that something special is starting.

At this point, it’s a given that we’re living in the “golden age” of television; somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 new scripted series drop each year. With so much to choose from, that means TV can get daring, specific, and sometimes, weird as hell. Superheroes trapped inside an I Love Lucy pastiche? A creepy animatronic doll calling a murderous game of Red Light, Green Light? In the era of peak TV, grade-a oddity is only a mouse-click away.

"She has ideas, but can she really be the face of Christmas?" HBO Max has unveiled the official trailer for Santa Inc., a new "adult" stop-motion animated series arriving on HBO Max this holiday season. "Out with the old, in with the elf." An elf working in Santa's Workshop in the North Pole dreams of becoming Santa Claus someday. When the successor to Santa Claus is poached by Amazon on Christmas Eve, Candy goes for her ultimate dream— to become the first woman Santa Claus in the history of Christmas. Sarah Silverman voices Candy Smalls, and the voice cast also includes Seth Rogen (as Santa Claus), Leslie Grossman, Gabourey Sidibe, Nicholas Braun, Craig Robinson, Joel Kim Booster, and Maria Bamford. One of the newest productions from Seth Rogen's company Point Grey Pictures. This looks like good holiday fun! And also a nice companion to all the animated Christmas classics of the past.
