Feature documentary “The Wild One,” which looks at the life of Jack Garfein, Holocaust survivor, Broadway director, Actors Studio West co-founder, and controversial filmmaker, has debuted its trailer. Tessa Louise-Salomé’s film, which is narrated by Willem Dafoe, will have its world premiere on Saturday at Tribeca Film Festival. The Party Film Sales is handling sales.
As well as Garfein and Dafoe, the doc features Peter Bogdanovich, Irène Jacob, Bobby Soto, Dick Guttman, Blanche Baker, Patricia Bosworth, Foster Hirsch, Geoffrey Horne and Kate Rennebohm.
“The Wild One” examines how Garfein’s experience in the concentration camps shaped his vision of acting as a survival mechanism and propelled his engagement with themes of violence, power and racism in postwar America in two explosive films: “The Strange One” (1957) and “Something Wild” (1961).

Sometimes when an actor’s popularity doesn’t extend past a certain decade it’s seen as a saddening thing since they might have been great at one point, but in some cases, it’s not so much that their greatness was stifled, it’s that it was mediocre for a while before they were given a role that people remembered. It’s not fair to say that Blanche Baker wasn’t ever popular since she’s been around for a while and had a pretty steady career for a while, but it is certainly accurate to state that she’s never been the kind of star that people

"Go get my grandson, bring him home!" 1091 Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Alice Fades Away, set right after the end of World War II. The film is the feature directorial debut of Ryan Bliss and arrives on VOD in February. On the run, Alice takes refuge on her uncle’s farm, now home to WWII survivors. But when a ruthless and unpredictable man arrives searching for her son, the last link to the family dynasty, they must fight back to make it out alive. Bolstered by a star making performance from Ashley Shelton and strong supporting work from veteran actors William Sadler and Blanche Baker, the film is described as a "thrilling and timely tale of a woman driven to the edge and forced to fight back." These kind of stories are becoming a dime a dozen, and unfortunately this one just doesn't look that good.

John Hughes’ breakthrough writing-directing hit still carries a glow that defuses its rougher edges, making it one of the best of ’80s Teen comedies. Even the savvy Soraya Roberts cuts it some slack, thanks to the authentic presence and fine performance of Molly Ringwald. Hughes’ amusing script comes up with at least ten moments that would have made Preston Sturges laugh, and his perfect casting for personalities young and old makes his direction look inspired. With great turns by Anthony Michael Hall, Haviland Morris, Debbie Pollack, Gedde Watanabe, Paul Dooley, and Michael Schoeffling.

Jack Garfein, the longtime teacher, director, writer, producer and pivotal member of the Actors Studio died on Dec. 30 due to complications from leukemia, according to Playbill. He was 89.

Garfein founded the Actors Studio West in Los Angeles, created the Actors and Directors Lab (both in New York and Los Angeles), co-founded the Strasberg Institute in N.Y. and the Jack Garfein Studio in Paris. He was also a co-founder of the Hollywood Theater Row, a collection of over 22 stages now called the Live Theater District of Los Angeles.

"You realize if this doesn't go perfectly, we are all going to jail." Netflix has debuted a trailer for the film Coin Heist, the latest little indie from young filmmaker Emily Hagins out of Austin. We've featured her work before, including her most recent film before this, titled Grow Up Tony Phillips. Coin Heist is indeed about a "coin heist" - four different high school kids decide to team up and figure out a way to break into the U.S. Mint and pay off a big debt by planting flawed coins. The cast includes Alex Saxon, Alexis G. Zall, Sasha Pieterse, Jay Walker, Blanche Baker, David W. Thompson and Elijah Boothe. This looks like it might be fun, and I always like supporting talented young filmmakers like Emily. Give it a look below. Here's the first official trailer for Emily Hagins' Coin Heist, direct from Netflix's YouTube: United by dire circumstances,...

A blast from the past keeps a close eye on a newly moved couple in The Gift, the directorial debut of Joel Edgerton, who also stars in the film alongside Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall, as shown in the film's first trailer. The Gift: "Can you really go through life having never wronged anyone? Even if you are unaware of how, or when, and even who you may have wronged....chances are there is someone out there who won't ever forget it...or you.
Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance from Simon's high school sends their world into a harrowing tailspin. Simon doesn't recognize Gordo (Joel Edgerton) at first,...

Welcome to another horror/sci-fi round-up! This time around we have word of two big cast confirmations for Independence Day 2, details on Scream Factory's Deep in the Darkness Blu-ray / DVD release, and information on the new Blanc/Biehn Productions film, Treachery.
Independence Day 2: Last night it was revealed that the first official cast member had signed on to star in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2, the sequel to his 1996 film that featured massive alien-induced destruction and larger-than-life characters. It's now been confirmed that one of those characters will be coming back, as Emmerich tweeted last night that Jeff Goldblum will appear in the sequel, likely reprising his role as the brainy and dryly humorous David Levinson, who teamed up with fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller to take down the mothership in the original film. Smith will not be coming back to reprise his role as Steven.

I first saw 1971’s “The Blood on Satan’s Claw” a couple of years ago, as an assignment for a long-running podcast that had a knack for uncovering cinematic, oddball gems. I remember saying that Satan’s Claw is like watching a 90+ minute car crash; impossible to look away from. But let’s get to what makes Angel Blake a great villain.

Today, we're featuring Donald Sutherland and Blanche Baker circa 1981. Some of Sutherland's more notable movie roles have included offbeat soldiers in popular war movies such as The Dirty Dozen, Mash and Kelly's Heroes, as well as a diverse range of characters in other noted films such as, Fellini's Casanova, Klute, Don't Look Now, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, JFK, Ordinary People, Pride amp Prejudice, and The Hunger Games. He is the father of actor Kiefer Sutherland. Hi Broadway credits include Lolita and Buck White. In 1980, Baker originated the lead role of a 12-year-old girl loved by a pedophile in Edward Albee's stage adaption of Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita.

We report on so many horror films on both the Hollywood and indie scene, it's easy to lose track of some titles we wanted to keep tabs on because they were so outrageous. The Life Zone is one of those productions. This "pro-life" horror film landed on our radar in June of 2011 and we've discovered it actually hits DVD tomorrow (December 11th). And that's the DVD cover art - featuring two screaming fetuses poking through a pregnant belly - to your right.
Starring Robert Loggia, Charles Durning, Blanche Baker, Lindsay Haun and Martin Kovegroup, the film concerns young women are kidnapped from an abortion clinic and held against their will by someone who doesn't want them to "commit murder," so they'll have their damn babies whether they want to or not.
I love the blurb on the cover on this one: "The Life Zone is a thriller with a message!

Prometheus (20th Century Fox) Ridley Scott’s quasi-prequel to his 1979 classic “Alien” has an intergalactic exploratory team (Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba) arriving on a uncharted planet, where they discover what appears to be a dormant alien spacecraft and what might be the first discovery of intelligent life outside of Earth. Of course, everything goes straight to hell before you can scream “Don’t touch that egg!” Sumptuous visuals and strong performances from the cast (not to mention a nearly-perfect first half) can’t compensate for gaping plot and logic holes that nearly sink the proceedings in the film’s protracted second half. It feels as though some very crucial footage wound up on the cutting room floor. Perhaps, as with “Alien” and “Aliens” we’ll see a “Director’s Cut” of “Prometheus” arriving on DVD within the next year. In the meantime,...

Another monster movie from Dark Sky Films is coming October 2nd, and it looks like a good one. The film is produced by the creators of The House Of The Devil and The Innkeepers, and stars Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead, Mallrats), Greg Finley, and Blanche Baker (great name). It is…Hypothermia, and it’s about a family on an ice fishing getaway. Ice fishing is dangerous as hell by itself, but add in a monster below the ice, and you got yourselves a horror movie.
The straight to DVD release (priced at $24.95) has a great retro poster (as well as a slick modern one). We have those and the trailer embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

Hypothermia takes place in Maine in the dead of winter. Ray Pelletier and his wife, Helen, have been ice fishing the frozen expanse of Lake Noyade for over two decades, but this year something is different: no fish bite. Is it their new neighbors on the ice -- Stevie, Jr. and his overbearing Dad -- with their high-tech gear and over-sized rig that are driving the fish away? Or is it something else? The Hypothermia Teaser Trailer has premiered. James Felix McKenney‘s Hypothermia (2010) teaser trailer stars Michael Rooker, Greg Finley, Blanche Baker, Don Wood, and Amy Chang. Hypothermia‘s plot synopsis: “Imagine Jaws under the ice, imagine terror at 20 degrees below freezing… In a remote winter hideaway devoid of any sign of life, two unsuspecting families on an ice-fishing vacation discover something sinister lurking in the frozen lake. One thing is for certain – the creature is hungry, and the only prey left is human.”
They certainly didn’t hold back on this teaser trailer. The blood flows. I think they show the monster far too many times and too much of it but since Michael Rooker is in it, I’ll give it a chance. Hypothermia‘s cast also includes Benjamin Hugh and Abel Forster.

General Hospital's New Head Writer Garin Wolf Looks to the Future
"The mob will still be there but it will become a background for the emotions of the characters. The Spencer family, the mob, the hospital, will all have equal weight. I probably shouldn't say this, but so will Wyndemere. Everyone has a story, no matter who they are. Everyone can make you laugh and cry."
"There's not a character on this show who is mined out yet. There's always something we haven't seen, a twist on a character we think we know but really don't. I love the idea of pinball characters."
Why Brands Aren’t Leveraging Independent Producers for New Media Content

Mr. Eddy from David Lynch's Lost Highway, a lawyer/politician from Jersey, and the older sister from Sixteen Candles got together to make a movie. It's about a group of young women who were swiped off the abortion table and dragged to some nightmarish world where a doctor wants to force them to have their babies against their will. Kenneth Del Vecchio's film (he wrote and produced this gem), The Life Zone, sounds like some kind of forced breeding XXX tale that doesn't really exist – but it does, and we have the trailer to prove it. Gird your loins and peep the trailer for "The Life Zone," the world's first horror movie to push a pro-life agenda. In "Zone," three women wake up in a room where they're being held hostage. No, they haven't been trawling Eastern European hostels for good times or playing with Jigsaw; they were kidnapped while waiting to get abortions.
Too bad for them; they're being forced by a gravelly voice guy with impressive eyebrows (a priest, perhaps?) and a ruthless female doctor to stay pregnant and give birth. The room looks like a leftover set from "Saw," except with walls covered in religious paintings and symbols. Maybe writer Ken Del Vecchio has been listening to "Papa Don't Preach" a little too much?
Speaking of Del Vecchio, he's done a couple of, well, interesting films that have political overtones, such as "O.B.A.M. Nude" and "Talking Points Memo," as well as something that...

Seems everyone is attempting to move back in to controversial horror territory of late, which can be a good thing. Not always, but it's good to push boudaries. Maybe not as far as 'The Human Centipede II' is attempting to do currently, however, its new forced abortion thriller 'The Life Zone' from director Rob Weber that seems to be taking the brunt of critism also of late. It's not surprising that a film that deals with several doctors forcing a group of young women to have their babies, against their wills is going to raise serious issues and take on serious comments. The movie stars ex-Playboy model Angela Little (below) as one of the abductees from an abortion clinic. Robert Loggia, Lindsey Haun, Charles Durning, Martin Kove, , Katarzyna Wolejnio, Blanche Baker, Tara Buck, Thomas G. Waites, Eric Etebari and Rachael Robbins all star. You can check out the new official trailer below.

This is one of the first independent films that this film lover has seen on Youtube, which has several more dislikes than likes. The comments for this film are pretty scathing, too. The film being lambasted is titled The Life Zone and this low budget shocker is from best-selling author Kenneth Del Vecchio (Horror).
The central plotline involves several doctors forcing a group of young women to have their babies, against their wills. The film stars Robert Loggia (Scarface), Lindsey Haun (Shrooms), Angela Little (American Pie), Blanche Baker (Sixteen Candles), Charles Durning, and Martin Kove. Prepare for audiences to be polarized on both sides of the abortion matter, as The Life Zone takes on some controversial material below.

When Hypothermia was first announced, we spoke to director James Felix McKenney who said that one the film's influences was Creature from the Black Lagoon . That's very apparent in the Cannes sales teaser trailer that hit the web today. The preview features Michael Rooker and his co-stars tangling with a Gill Man of sorts living in the iced-over lake beneath their feet. There's plenty of creature and man-in-suit action to behold. Blanche Baker, Greg Finley, Don Wood, Ben Forster and Amy Chang also star in the film which Dark Sky Films is handling, so stay tuned for release news.

To go along with our exclusive image posted yesterday night, below you'll find a new behind-the-scenes look at the freezing cold set of James Felix McKenney's Hypothermia, which wraps production today (fittingly in the middle of a blizzard in upstate NY). A large portion of the production took place on the middle of a frozen lake - Great Sacandaga Lake in Mayfield, NY. Michael Rooker, Blanche Baker, Greg Finley, Don Wood, Ben Forster and Amy Chang all star.
