“The Shape of Water” pulled off a shocker at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 20, winning Best Period Costumes over Oscar frontrunner “Phantom Thread.” That unexpected outcome marked its fourth win from the 11 guilds weighing in to date. This fantasy film previously prevailed with the directors, producers and art directors. It is in contention with the two remaining groups on deck: the makeup artists & hair stylists and sound editors. The only group with which it did not contend this awards season was the Visual Effects Society.
Of the other Best Picture nominees, “Dunkirk” has gone four for nine at these precursor prizes (casting directors, film editors, sound editors and visual effects wizards). It is in the running with the sound editors.
“Blade Runner 2049” won with both groups that held awards last weekend: the cinematographers and sound editors. It had previously prevailed with the art directors.

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Costume Design, “Phantom Thread,” stumbled at the guild awards on Feb. 20, losing the Best Period Film category to one of its Oscar rivals, “The Shape of Water.” Another Oscar nominee, “Beauty and the Beast,” lost the Fantasy Film race to “Wonder Woman.” The other two Academy Awards contenders — “Darkest Hour” and “Victoria and Abdul” — were snubbed by the Costume Designers Guild at its 20th annual awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton .
But don’t rule out “Phantom Thread” for the Oscar just yet. Remember, only nine of the most recent 19 Oscar champs for Best Costume Design came into the evening with a Cdg award on their mantle. Indeed, just last year the academy went with the fantasy film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which had lost at the guild to “Doctor Strange.”

“The Shape of Water,” which reaped a leading 13 Oscar nominations, is in the running for 12 of the 13 guild awards missing out only with the visual effects artists. It has won with three of the six groups to be heard from to date: the directors, producers and art directors. This fantasy film lost its races at the awards held by the actors, casting directors and film editors.
One of its main Oscar rivals for Best Picture, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” edged it out with the casting directors. And this character study was a favorite of the actors as well, taking home a whopping three SAG Awards.
Two of the other nine Best Picture nominees — “Dunkirk” and “Lady Bird” — also won with the casting directors with the former also finding favor with the film editors. Another Best Picture contender, “Darkest Hour,” picked up a prize from the actors.

On the weekend after Oscar nominations were announced on Jan. 23, the art directors and film editors revealed their picks for the best of the year. Prior to the unveiling of the Academy Awards roster, we’d already heard from the casting directors, producers and actors. Five more groups — cinematographers, directors, sound editors, visual effects wizards and writers — will weigh in before final voting for the Oscars commences on Feb. 20. The remaining three (costume designers, makeup artists & hair stylists, sound mixers) will have their say during the eight days of voting for the Academy Awards that ends on Feb. 27.

Following the Golden Globes earlier this month, the 2017-18 awards season continues with the 23rd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards. The ceremony honored the best in film and television from 2017. Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” led all films with 14 nominations this year, including Best Picture and Best Director. “Feud: Betty and Joan” leds the television categories with six nominations, but HBO’s highly competitive “Big Little Lies” is a close second with five.

The Costume Designers Guild nominees for the 20th annual Cdg Awards in film, TV, and shortform costume design have landed. Three costume categories separate contemporary, period, and fantasy/sci-fi, so there’s room for more contemporary titles such as “I, Tonya” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” which are less likely to make it to the big Oscar show. Period films like “Phantom Thread” and “The Shape of Water” and big-scale fantasies like “Thor: Ragnarok” tend to make the Oscar grade. Given the number of slots, among the notable snubs are period films “Darkest Hour” (which boasts more showy costumes than nominated “Dunkirk”), “The Post,” “The Beguiled,” “Victoria & Abdul,” and “Mudbound.”
On the television side, a number of popular picks emerged with nods, including “Game of Thrones,” “Black Mirror,” “The Crown,” and “Stranger Things.” Like the film nods, each category is divided by contemporary, period, and fantasy/sci-fi designations.

Like production designer Dennis Gassner, Renée April also needed a visual cue about the direction of her costume design from Denis Villeneuve. And he gave her the same description about the dystopian world of “Blade Runner 2049”: “Brutal.”
“He said it was worse than the dark and rainy mood of ‘Blade Runner,’ said April, the go-to costume designer for Villeneuve. “They’re in bad shape 30 years later and the earth is not the place to be. It’s more polluted, it’s colder, it’s really kind of dreadful.”
“So I took it from there and made it tougher,” she added. “Also, we didn’t want to do something science-fiction. We wanted to do it realistic. I didn’t want costumes with [lots of] zippers and plastic. So my job was to make the characters believable.” In other words, it was more about survival than fashion.

As usual, period dramas are the dominant genre when it comes to Best Costume Design. Jacqueline Durran is competing with herself with the extravagant Disney live-action blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast” as well as World War II drama “Darkest Hour,” which features elaborate costumes to add weight to Gary Oldman as Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Also needing some padding was Dame Judi Dench as the aging monarch in “Victoria & Abdul.” Kenneth Branagh’s new take on “Murder on the Orient Express,” featuring himself as mustache-twirling detective Hercule Poirot as well as a slimmer Dench, features a colorful assortment of characters on the mythic train from Istanbul.
Two rural southern war-time dramas are competing this year: Michael Boyd took on the period costumes for Dee Rees’ “Mudbound,” set during World War II, while Sofia Coppola’s Civil War melodrama “The Beguiled” is another strong entry from Stacey Battat.

Time and culture have caught up with the influential “Blade Runner,” which combined sci-fi and neo-noir and ushered in dystopian cyberpunk in 1982. So it was a tall order for Denis Villeneuve to tackle the long-awaited sequel. But thanks to an aesthetic that both honors and expands the world of the original, “Blade Runner 2049” delivers a visual feast with plenty of Oscar crafts potential.
That’s not only great news for cinematographer Roger Deakins, who could finally earn his elusive Academy Award after 13 nominations for his diverse lighting, but also for Oscar-winning production designer Dennis Gassner (“Bugsy”), Oscar-nominated editor Joe Walker (“12 Years a Slave”), costume designer Renée April (“Arrival”), Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer (“The Lion King”) and collaborating composer Benjamin Wallfisch (“It”), and the VFX and sound editing/mixing teams.
Indeed, “Blade Runner 2049” could be this year’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which won six out of 10 craft Oscars last year (costume,...

Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment have unveiled a bunch of new high resolution images from ‘Blade Runner 2049‘ to help promote the film’s release. Recently, we’ve seen 2 prequel shorts– ‘2036: Nexus Dawn‘ and ‘2048: Nowhere to Run‘– and with a little over a week left until the film’s release, these images couldn’t have come at a better time. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario) and written by Hampton Fancher (Blade Runner) and Michael Green (Alien: Covenant), the film takes place 30 years after the the events of the original ‘Blade Runner‘.
Here’s the official synopsis for ‘Blade Runner 2049‘:
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, Lapd Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard...

Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, here’s a look at the new trailer and posters for Sicario.
From director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Incendies) comes a searing emotional-thriller that descends into the intrigue, corruption and moral mayhem of the borderland drug wars.
When Arizona FBI agent and kidnap-response-team leader Kate Macer (Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt) uncovers a Mexican cartel’s house of death, her shocking find leads to profound consequences on both a personal and global level.
Kate is recruited to join a covert black-ops mission headed by a mysterious Colombian operative known only as Alejandro (Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Best Supporting Actor, Traffic, 2000) along with special agent Matt Graver (Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin, Best Supporting Actor, Milk, 2008).

Cannes — In 2001 Benicio Del Toro won an Oscar for his portrayal of a Mexican police officer attempting to take down the drug cartels in Steven Soderbergh’s “Traffic.” Fourteen years later he’s starring in another film about North America’s “drug war,” Denis Villeneuve’s “Sicario,” and the picture makes the disheartening argument that things may have actually gotten worse. The film begins during an FBI operation in Phoenix, Arizona where veteran agent Kate Macy (a superb Emily Blunt) is leading a Swat team to take down a hostage situation. They soon discover a home with no hostages to be found but over 20 dead bodies hidden within its walls, all victims of a Mexican drug cartel. Kate is shaken by the murders enough that she reluctantly signs on to be the FBI liaison for what she’s told is a DEA and Dept. of Justice task force. This group...

The almost outrageously intense, kidnapping thriller is hitting this week, and the Prisoners trailer doesn’t pull any punches.
With the possible exceptions of Jake Gyllenhaal (because he is still underrated) and Paul Dano (because not enough people know who he is), the cast of Prisoners should sell the film by itself. The word “Oscar®” follows this movie around like a bad penny.
Hugh Jackman and Terence Howard fill the pivotal roles of fathers whose daughters have been abducted. Gyllenhaal is the lead detective on the case, and Dano plays a suspect who is caught up in the thick of things, but is too mentally challenged to have orchestrated anything as complex as this case seems to be.
Rounding out the cast are Maria Bello, Viola Davis, and Melissa Leo, and if that weren’t enough, it’s directed by Denis Villeneuve, whose Incendies was nominated in the foreign language category.

By no means intended as an exhaustive list, Clothes on Film ponder an overview of 2011 in costume. Concentrating on mainstream fare that those outside of big cities are likely to have seen, we consider which costumes delighted, surprised and best of all, enlightened us. Expect to spot Drive, Melancholia and Hugo on this list somewhere.
Costume encompasses every item of clothing worn on film. By strict definition costume is not ‘wardrobe’; wardrobe is what Oprah Winfrey wore on her talk show. While at Clothes on Film we embrace all forms of costume, we do have a slight bias for contemporary, although only because it is often underrepresented in the face of (admittedly dazzling) period or fantasy wear. This roundup will comprise both period and contemporary, but...

Ignore the clunky, borderline baffling title, as Rise of the Planet of the Apes is gripping entertainment from start to finish. It’s reasonably smart too, with plenty of subtext on everything from ethnicity to hierarchical costume without skimping on the physical action. Director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist, 2008) is going places in Hollywood.
You would be wrong to assume this is not an actors’ film either. It may be populated by Weta motion capture simians, but these are performances themselves; in the case of Andy Serkis as hyper-intelligent, revolutionist chimpanzee Caesar, a subtly complex performance worthy of recognition.
While James Franco’s misguided scientist Will Rodman could easily have faded into the background, his everyman face and simplistic moralistic standpoint, not to mention chemistry with Caesar, means he will be missed if exorcised for the inevitable sequel. It is...

Previously, Director Duncan Jones explored the moon with Sam Rockwell in 2009′s appropriately titled independent hit Moon. Now, Jones (son of David Bowie) has brought his science-fiction imagination to a location that holds its own beauty and mystery, Chicago.
His latest film, Source Code, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Famiga and Jeffrey Wright, was shot in and around the Windy City. Not only does it feature shots of Chicago’s skyline, but it also features shots of the city’s unsung hero, the Metra line. For all of you midwesterners, be sure to look out for the Downer’s Grove, Skokie, Lagrange, Lagrange Park and Orland Park Metra stops when you catch Source Code when it opens on Friday, April 1st.
And for all of you that have visited Chicago before -- yes, there’s also a shot from inside the city’s curious tourist attraction, the Bean.
