The Killers stopped by The Late Late Show to perform “In Another Life,” off their recent album Pressure Machine. The band appeared remotely from a darkened venue, complete with a jukebox and wood-paneled walls.
Pressure Machine dropped in August. The album, produced by the band with Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado, is the band’s seventh full-length.
To create the songs, frontman Brandon Flowers was inspired by his formative years in the tiny, remote Utah town of Nephi. The album is a concept record about life in Nephi told from...

In the early days of the pandemic, just as it was becoming clear that the Killers’ 2020 tour wasn’t going to happen, Brandon Flowers found that his mind kept drifting back his formative years in the tiny, remote Utah town of Nephi. “There was a nostalgic longing in the air and a little bit of sadness,” the singer says. “I started thinking about where I was in the Nineties, and these stories just sort of blossomed out.”
Those stories form the basis of the upcoming Killers record Pressure Machine, due out August 13th.

Bill Callahan begins his new song, “Pigeons,” with a greeting: “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” He signs off, “Sincerely, L. Cohen.” Sandwiching his own work between the names of two musical luminaries might seem the height of hubris — if Callahan weren’t such a damn good songwriter himself.
“Pigeons” is a spare affair, opening with finger-picked guitar and an evocative image: “Well, the pigeons ate the wedding rice/And exploded somewhere over San Antonio.” Taking its cue from Cash, the track has a vague cowboy sound — replete with horns and...

It will come as no surprise to anyone who’s followed the career of director Mark Romanek that his newest work, “Loop,” the pilot episode for eight-episode Amazon Studios series “Tales From the Loop,” is as visually arresting as it is conceptually bold and emotionally evocative.
Best-known for his work on some of the past two decades’ most audacious and powerful music videos and commercials, Romanek has accrued multiple Grammy Awards for his clips for stars from Fiona Apple to Johnny Cash, Taylor Swift to Michael Jackson, Jay-Z to Joni Mitchell, Nine Inch Nails to Madonna. Prizes at Cannes Lions and more have come his way for innovative, emotive spots for Apple, Tiffany, Nike and American Express, among others.
Romanek’s feature film resume is shorter, but just as powerful, with Robin Williams-starrer “One Hour Photo” and his adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Never Let Me Go” both visionary...

Indignation is indeed one theme in the movie Indignation, based on Phillip Roth’s 2008 novel of the same name, along with death, life, and the “what if” of choices made. Set in 1951, young college freshman Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman) is filled with indignation on several levels, even before coming to Winesburg College in Ohio from his working-class home in Newark, New Jersey. The Korean War, which Marcus avoids with his college deferment, is a looming presence throughout the story.
Indignation perfectly captures both the look and the feel of a repressive, restrictive, conformist 1950s America. It was a buttoned-down time of tightly controlled emotions, with World War II still in the near past, Cold War commie-hunting in full swing and women safely back in traditional roles, and the youth culture and freethinking of the 1960s still in the future. .

James Schamus is 56 — a little late, you might think, to start a career as a director. But as a long-time screenwriter (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), producer (Brokeback Mountain), and savvy film executive who championed such talents as Ang Lee, Todd Haynes and the Coen brothers, Schamus knows his way around the business and the art of movies. With Indignation, his fierce, feeling adaptation of Philip Roth's 2008 novel, Schamus kicks off a new phase in his career with impressive finesse. When he wrote the novel, Roth was looking back at...

Writer Kent Haruf, who authored Plainsong and several other novels set in small-town Colorado, died Sunday at age 71, his publisher said. Haruf's editor at Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, Gary Fisketjon, confirmed Haruf's death. Knopf spokesman Paul Bogaards said Haruf had been battling cancer. During a 1999 interview with The Associated Press, Haruf said that he was a preacher's son who grew up in a family of book lovers. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan University, spent two years in the Peace Corps in Turkey and returned to the United States to fine-tune his fiction at the University of Iowa's Writers Workshop. The Alluring Art of Margaret Brundage, by Stephen D. Korshak and J David Spurlock, Vanguard Publishing, retail: $39.95 hardcover, Amazon $16.59 softcover / $28.61 hardcover.
Generally speaking, when I’m reading a biography of a spectacularly talented popular culture artist I rarely encounter a lot of references to the Industrial Workers of the World. In the interest of full disclosure, I was a member of the Iww and I still fully sympathize with the heritage and the goals of the Wobblies. So there.
Irrespective of her personal history, Margaret Brundage’s pulp illustrations – mostly for Weird Tales – speak for themselves. They were spectacularly sensual, evoking the most base emotions in the true pulp tradition. That she was a woman made her work all the more unusual: back then, commercial illustration was very much an old boy’s club, and generally old W.A.S.P. boys at that. Then again, it is likely a...

An attempt to ease the pain of those who feel Baz Luhrmann has not made a film of 'the Great American novel'
Baz Luhrmann's critically panned adaption of The Great Gatsby has generated renewed interest in F Scott Fitzgerald's famed novel, ahead of the film's premiere on Friday.
At the peak of Gatsby fever, though, the inevitable backlash has hit. Impassioned spiels from those who insist that this "Great American Novel" isn't all that great are being raised across the internet – most notably, New York magazine's Kathryn Schulz has written 2,000-word explanation of why she "despises" Fitzgerald's novel.
It is an impressive accomplishment. And yet, apart from the restrained, intelligent, beautifully constructed opening pages and a few stray passages thereafter – a melancholy twilight walk in Manhattan; some billowing curtains settling into place at the closing of a drawing-room door – Gatsby as a literary creation leaves me cold. Like...

“Maybe I was straitjacketing myself because even back when I was doing Tulsa or Teenage Lust, I wouldn't go see movies about teenagers. I wouldn't look at books if they were about teenagers, because I was afraid that either I would be influenced or that someone had already done something that I had done, or someone was doing it better. I was just afraid to look at anything, because I didn't want any ideas. I don't know why, but I didn't. Just frightened. Scared to death.”

When is comes to real acting, Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce basically show Shia Labeouf how it’s done.
Following a screening of Lawless, a woman said to my Dad in passing that she didn’t think she’d ever seen a gangster picture with a rural setting. “What about Bonnie and Clyde”, he responded. Much like some people don’t know their movie history, many are unaware of the real life story of the infamous Bondurant brothers, a family of bootleggers who stood up to corrupt authorities that wanted in on their profits during the prohibition era. Inspired by the story of his great-grandfather and two great uncles, Matt Bondurant penned the 2008 historical novel The Wettest County in the World, focusing on youngest brother Jack. In fact, the title switch is just the first of many dull tweaks by director John Hillcoat and musician-turned-screenwriter Nick Cave that changes a pulpy, true crime story into an art drama too atmospheric for a tale involving, Chicago gangsters, mountain bootleggers, corrupt police and the illegal booze known as “White Lightning.”...

Los Angeles – Phyllis Diller emerged as a comic force during the era of the beatniks and talk show hosts who smoked cigarettes on camera. Beginning her career as a pioneer female stand-up act at 37 years old, she went on to establish a memorable character and show business longevity, working virtually all the way to the end. Diller’s passing was announced yesterday by her manager. She was 95.
Ms. Diller created an enduring stage presence with her outrageous mop of hair, outlandish outfits – especially through the swinging 1960s – and a foghorn laugh that was virtually one of a kind. Her act consisted of anecdotes and jokes regarding a fictional husband named Fang, the various in-laws surrounding them and a self-depreciating routine regarding her own wild looks. Ironically, later in life she became an advocate for plastic surgery, maintaining that basic look well into her later years.

Phyllis Diller, an actress and comedian best known for her stand-up comedy act, is dead at age 95. TMZ reports that the comedian passed away at her Los Angeles home Monday in the company of her family.
Diller, who was born in 1917 in Ohio, witnessed revolutionary change for female comedians in the latter half of the 20th century. Her close relationship with the English comedian Bob Hope spurred nearly two dozen co-starring television specials during the 1960s. Diller would also go on to star in two eponymous television series for network television: "The Phyllis Diller Show," from 1966 to 1967, and "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show," one year later.
Diller is survived by three children, Sally, Suzanne and Perry, from her first marriage to Sherwood Anderson Diller. She remarried actor Warde Donovan in 1965 and divorced him in 1974.

Author Ray Bradbury died this morning in Los Angeles at the age of 91, reports io9. Bradbury's family and biographer Sam Weller confirmed the news.
The author of more than 50 books, Bradbury's work spanned genres of science fiction, horror and mystery. He was most widely known for his novels “The Martian Chronicles,” Dandelion Wine," “Something Wicked This Way Comes” and his classic dystopian novel "Fahrenheit 451," which has been a contested staple of school reading lists since its publication in 1953.
Many of Bradbury's works were adapted for television and film, including "Fahrenheit 451," which Francois Truffaut wrote and directed a film version of in 1966. Bradbury himself scripted several screenplays, including John Huston's 1956 version of "Moby Dick."
"What I have always been is a hybrid author," Bradbury said in 2009. "I am completely in love with movies, and I am completely in love with theater, and I am completely in love with libraries.

Shia LeBeouf and Tom Hardy must be planning something in this first image for Lawless, formally titled The Wettest Country in the World. The movie recently changed its titled when Terrence Malick gave the title to John Hillcoat. The movie follows a pair of bootlegging brothers (Labeouf and Hardy) in the Prohibition-Era South. EW debuted the image.
Check out the first image of Shia LeBeouf and Tom Hardy in John Hillcoat’s Lawless:
The movie also stars Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Dane DeHaan, and Jessica Chastain. Lawless is set to open on August 31st.

[Updated] Until recently known as The Wettest County, John Hillcoat’s Lawless sees him return behind the camera for the first time since the BAFTA-nominated The Road, and he’s put together one of the best line-ups to look forward to in 2012.
Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska are all very much well-known and -loved faces, and Jason Clarke has been deservedly on the rise, along with the young Dane DeHaan, one of the leads in Chronicle.
Not to be confused with one of Terrence Malick’s many upcoming films, a few set photos from Hillcoat’s Lawless have surfaced already, but this is our first official look at the film with a scan from EW, via The Playlist – as it’s a scan, it’s a little grainy, but nonetheless awesome, and we can no doubt look forward to a hi-res version soon.

There was a point earlier this year when it looked like we might see John Hillcoat's The Wettest County by the end of the year. The Weinstein Company picked up the film, originally called The Wettest County in the World, at Cannes, and it seemed reasonable to assume that a bootlegging tale from the director of The Proposition and The Road starring Tom Hardy and Shia Labeouf might be a solid year-end release. But the Weinsteins, focused as ever on awards season, have already pegged The Artist, The Iron Lady and My Week With Marilyn as the company's year-end contenders. So The Wettest County is now set to arrive in April 2012. The specific date is April 20, 2012, which means the film will face thin competition from Scary Movie 5, the Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace 'Taken in space' movie Lockout, and The House at the End of the Street, starring Jennifer Lawrence.

Calling "Beyond Words" a mime show is to do it a disservice. Mime is pretty much the sardines of the stage -- somewhere, someone really loves it, but you never seem to find them.
Yet this delightful memoir, which Bill Bowers tells in a series of vignettes that begin with him speaking then segueing into mime, is nothing short of wonderful. Granted the crowd at Manhattan's Urban Stages is stacked in his favor on opening night, Wednesday, Oct. 12. But this is such a well-done story and told in such an engaging way that this show would work in far larger venues on any night.
The one-man show is mostly autobiographical. Bowers tells of being born in Montana in 1959, the same year Weird Al Yankovic, Nancy Grace and Barbie also entered this world. Bowers is by far the most charming among them, as Barbie really depended so much on others for her personality.

Well-received at Sundance, SXSW and BAMcinemaFEST, Asif Kapadia's Senna finally begins its theatrical run. Guy Lodge at In Contention: "With a new breed of documentarists getting ever more playfully shape-shifting in they ways they trade information and manipulate point of view — last year's talking-point docs Catfish and Exit Through the Gift Shop both hinged on an abrupt turn not only in perspective, but in subject — Asif Kapadia's dazzling biopic Senna instead subverts expectations by keeping its storytelling fiercely linear. Viewers unfamiliar with the story of Ayrton Senna, the reckless, beautiful Brazilian Formula 1 racing driver who rose to prominence in the 1980s and ended his career as arguably the greatest in the sport's history, are offered no pat framing devices and wistful talking heads to say what became of him, beyond the unhappy use of the past tense. There are, presumably, more such viewers in the Us than in the UK,...

Here’s a description of the novel once again: “…the Bondurants,...

John Hillcoat‘s The Wettest County in the World, a film adaptation of Matt Bondurant‘s novel of the same name (which is scripted by musician and frequent Hillcoat collaborator Nick Cave) finished shooting recently, and like any great film set, photos have emerged from it. One showed up last month, giving us a look at lead Shia Labeouf, but these show more members of the cast.
One has Jason Clarke and Tom Hardy and Labeouf as the three Bondurant brothers in period costumes; it almost looks like a shot taken from a monitor. Also appearing are Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, the former starring as a love interest to Hardy, and the latter playing Labeouf‘s love interest, described as a “local Mennonite girl.”
The pictures were taken by producer Cassian Elwes (with the above being from a casting agency’s Facebook page), and can be found below (via...

The Wettest County in the World is an upcoming film directed by John Hillcoat and starring Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy. The Nick Caves creenplay is based on a novel of the same name by Matt Bondurant. Three brothers find their bootlegging business under threat in Prohibition-era Franklin County, Virginia. The story is based on Matt Bondurant’s grandfather and great-uncles. Producer Cassian Elwes recently provided some set photos from his new drama The Wettest County in the World via his Twitter account.
Shia Lebeouf plays Jack Bondurant, the youngest of the three brothers while Hardy plays Forrest Bondurant. Jason Clarke is also in the photo too as Howard Bondurant. Below is also a first look at Mia Wasikowska as Bertha Minnix, a Mennonite preacher’s daughter who is the love interest of Jack.

John Hillcoat’s latest movie, The Wettest County in the World has somewhat of a dream cast attached which includes the likes of Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Guy Pearce, Jason Clarke, and Jessica Chastain.
SlashFilm give us more information on the movie which was apparently scheduled to start shooting last year then died, but as this image of Shia La Beouf and possible co-stars proves, the movie is alive and well and is current filming as I type.
Plot: In 1928, a pair of thieves accost Bondurant’s real life great-uncle Forrest at his Franklin County, Va., restaurant. They’re after a large cache of bootlegging money and end up cutting Forrest’s throat. The story of his survival and his trek to a hospital 12 miles away has taken on mythical proportions by the time Sherwood Anderson arrives in Franklin County in 1934 to research a magazine piece...

After rumor went viral that "The Wettest County in the World" is filming around Peachtree, the first look of the upcoming movie has leaked online. On the pictures, Shia Labeouf is featured on set, donning a period garb and surrounded by children.
Beside the "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" star, the film also assembles other Hollywood stars, including "Inception" star Tom Hardy, "The Dark Knight" actor Gary Oldman, and "Alice in Wonderland" beauty Mia Wasikowska. "The King's Speech" actor Guy Pearce, "Public Enemies" actor Jason Clarke, "True Blood" actor Dane DeHaan and "The Debt" actress Jessica Chastain also reportedly join the club.
"The Wettest County in the World", based on Matt Bondurant's novel of the name, will see Hardy and Labeouf leading as the bootlegging Bondurant brothers. Adapted by "The Proposition" screenwriter Nick Cave and directed by John Hillcoat, the movie is a mix of brotherhood, greed, and murder.

The above pictures is our first look at John Hillcoat‘s adaptation of The Wettest County in the World. The Prohibition-era dramatic thriller is currently shooting, and we have a couple set photos showing Shia Labeouf in costume as one of the two leads. Tom Hardy plays the other lead. The images are not really that exciting.
The cast is simply amazing and includes, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Guy Pearce, Jason Clarke, and Jessica Chastain. The screenplay was adapted by Nick Cave who is also scoring the film, from Matt Bondurant‘s novel.

One of our most-anticipated upcoming films is John Hillcoat‘s The Wettest County In The World. We were unsure if it would go into production, but it indeed has and the cast is unbelievable. For his follow-up to The Road, Hillcoat has assembled Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Guy Pearce, and Jason Clarke.
The period tale followers the bootlegging brothers Bondurant brothers and we have the first photos of one of them, Labeouf, from Shiantology (via /Film). It’s nice to see Labeouf fit “smaller” films in between his blockbusters like Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The same goes for Tom Hardy, who will be shooting Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises after this. I liked The Road, but it was a film I never have the desire to watch again due to the utterly bleak nature. Hillcoat seems to be lightening things up a bit here.

One of the films I'm most excited about right now is John Hillcoat's adaptation of the Prohibition-era novel The Wettest County in the World. The film had been picking up steam a year ago, then died, and now is coming back to life [1]. Scratch that: it is alive! The film is shooting right now, and there are a couple set photos showing Shia Labeouf in costume as one of the two leads. (Tom Hardy is the other lead.) The photos are less exciting than the fact that they prove this one is really happening. Check one of the images after the break. Why is this awesome? Check out the cast: Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Guy Pearce, Jason Clarke, and Jessica Chastain. Nick Cave adapted the screenplay from Matt Bondurant's novel and will be scoring the film as well. (Hopefully with his Bad Seeds/Grinderman...

This is the last of my lists of the best films of 2010, and the hardest to name. Call it the Best Art Films. I can't precisely define an Art Film, but I knew I was seeing one when I saw these. I could also call them Adult Films, if that term hadn't been devalued by the porn industry. These are films based on the close observation of behavior. They are not mechanical constructions of infinitesimal thrills. They depend on intelligence and empathy to be appreciated.
They also require acting of a precision not necessary in many mass entertainments. They require directors with a clear idea of complex purposes. They require subtleties of lighting and sound that create a self-contained world. Most of all, they require sympathy. The directors care for their characters, and ask us to see them as individuals, not genre emblems. That requires us to see ourselves as individual viewers,...

Let’s get straight to the point! Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce and Mia Wasikowska have all joined the project we previously wrote about – The Wettest County in the World.
Directed by John Hillcoat, movie already stars Shia Labeuof, Tom Hardy, Dane DeHaan and Jessica Chastain. Now, with this latest casting news, it definitely sounds perfect!
Prohibition-era dramatic thriller, written by Nick Cave follows “…the Bondurants, bootlegging brothers runnin’ stills, runnin’ loads, and runnin’ from the law in Depression-era Virginia. The book is mainly narrated through the experience of the youngest Bondurant, Jack (in truth, a grandfather of the author), and his family’s moonshine enterprise supplies the action in a plot that evokes the culture of distilling and distributing white lightning.

The cast for John Hillcoat’s The Wettest County in the World keeps growing, and with each addition it only seems to be getting better. The cast of John Hillcoat's The Wettest County in the World keeps getting more wonderful. Revived from limbo [1] a few months ago, the film was already set to star Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf as the core members of the bootlegging Bondurant family and [2] Jessica Chastain as a close associate. Jason Clarke signed on [3] not long ago. Now Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman are on board, and Mia Wasikowska, who has been rumored for a few weeks, is confirmed as well. THR [4] reports from the European Film Market in Berlin where, after a Sundance that was characterized by strong sales, it looks like we can expect to see a lot of dealmaking. In this case, we've got an expanding cast for a film that was scripted by Nick Cave based on Matt Bondurant's novel / family history of Virginia bootleggers during Prohibition. After grabbing Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain and possibly Mia Wasikowska, John Hillcoat’s The Wettest County in the World has just added Jason Clarke, according to Variety. I can't quite express how happy I am that The Wettest County in the World is really moving forward [1]. The film was in development [2] for months last year before seemingly being killed off just as the calendar turned. Now it is happening again, with John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition) still directing Shia Labeouf from a script by Nick Cave. Tom Hardy has also signed on, and now the production has scored one of the rising stars of whom we'll likely see much in the next few years: Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life). THR [3] reports that Jessica Chastain will play Tom Hardy's love interest, "a big city woman now living in a small town who at one time was mixed up with gangsters." It's a role that was once linked to [4] Amy Adams, and in which Scarlett Johansson had shown interest in 2009. This will hopefully be a great...

The Wettest County in the World is an upcoming John Hillcoat‘s movie with Labeouf and trust us, this sounds quite interesting, especially because we have great names involved in the whole thing.
So, while we’re still here let us mention that Nick Cave wrote the screenplay for the film that will follow:

"Boardwalk Empire" may have just ended its first season, but Hollywood isn't ready to give up on Prohibition yet. The Los Angeles Times has the news that Tom Hardy and Shia Labeouf are teaming up to star in the dramatic thriller "The Wettest County in the World," which is coming at us from "The Road" director John Hillcoat. The title may sound a bit, um, XXX, but Hardy and Labeouf will be playing Prohibition-era bootleggers and brothers... that is if the Times' sources are correct.

Late last year, it looked like John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition) would direct an adaptation of the Matt Bondurant book The Wettest County in the World, possibly with Shia Labeouf and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles. The name of the film was changed [1] to The Promised Land when it appeared at the 2009 American Film Market, but financing never came together and in January of this year the film was pronounced dead. And now -- huzzah! -- it seems to be back from the grave, once again using the title The Wettest County in the World. Shia Labeouf remains part of the project, but other rumored male co-stars have given way to a new actor who will join him: Tom Hardy. Like Carey Mulligan, Tom Hardy is attached to pretty much every semi-interesting project on the horizon. Most recently is the previously thought-to-be-dead adaption of Matt Bondurant‘s novel The Wettest County in the World. The film also rumored to have Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams, but that is no more. Inception and Bronson star Tom Hardy will team up with Shia Labeouf in the Prohibition-era dramatic thriller, written by none other than Nick Cave. Recently, I rejoiced about all of the upcoming projects that The Proposition and The Road director John Hillcoat's got brewing. But there's also another in turnaround that's getting new life. As The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog reports, there's a whole slew of talent circling around the once-struggling The Wettest County in the World. Scarlett Johansson's name has been thrown around as well as one heck of a diverse mix of young male talent -- Ryan Gosling, Shia Labeouf, Michael Shannon, and Paul Dano.
Sorry, Shia, but I feel compelled to sing: "Which of these boys is not like the other?" If there's any chance of getting into one of those odd-man-out scenarios, this would be the one. i can't imagine they're all up for the same part (as there are 4 main gigs), but could he really compare to four actors who have proven themselves to be quite hardcore and skilled?...
