Felicity Jones and Jonathan Bailey are no longer attached to star in Simon Amstell’s comedy “Maria,” Variety can confirm.
The movie is currently on pause after cast scheduling issues were followed by last year’s Hollywood strikes, although a source says Amstell is in talks to revive the project, which was first launched at Cannes two years ago.
Jones was set to lead the feature, playing a woman called Maria who was struggling with her age and a difficult relationship with her terminally-ill father. According to the logline, Maria then embarked on a questionable relationship with her stepbrother Raffy.
“Bridgerton’s” Jonathan Bailey was lined up to play Maria’s boyfriend while Jason Isaacs was cast as her father.

Last month, Mock The Week was cancelled after 17 years on air. The satirical comedy was only one of a flurry of modern panel shows featuring teams of comedians, spawning from the format used in Have I Got News For You that emerged during the nineties and noughties. Taking cues from long-running Hignfy which hit TV screens in 1990, popular series such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and the anarchic, absurd Shooting Stars were followed by the likes of Qi, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Would I Lie To You?, Celebrity Juice and, of course, Mock The Week. But with ratings plummeting and cancellations abounding, is it high time the genre called it a day?

Since 2011, the Edinburgh Film Festival’s Talent Lab has nurtured a number of rising filmmakers through an assortment of masterclasses, workshops and individual mentoring sessions: Talents like Ben Sharrock (“Limbo”), Eva Riley (a recent winner BIFA winner for “Perfect 10”) and Rob Savage (“Host”) are alumni of the program. In 2019, however, the program yielded the Talent Lab Connects offshoot, in which a smaller selection of writers, directors and producers are given the chance to develop specific feature film or series projects with a range of industry mentors.
Now in its third year — and its second of the program taking place online — the program will be headed again by renowned U.K. script editor Kate Leys, whose recent credits include Simon Amstell’s “Benjamin,” Bart Layton’s “American Animals” and John Maclean’s “Slow West.”

With Academy Award-winning “Roma” and “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuarón already a fan, Charlotte Colbert’s feature debut “She Will” will no doubt similarly impress audiences when it premieres at the Locarno Film Festival this week.
A psychological horror, the film stars Alice Krige (“Star Trek: First Contact”) as Veronica, a double mastectomy patient seeking respite at a rural Scottish healing retreat who soon finds herself able to mete out revenge via her dreams.
“’She Will’ sits in the tradition of great psychological horror films,” Cuarón said of the work. “The images, symbolism and layers within the story slowly convey a metaphysical ecstasy which leaves one questioning long after the film is finished. Charlotte Colbert has crafted a powerful debut.”
Krige is joined on-screen by Kota Eberhardt (“X-Men: Dark Phoenix”), Malcolm McDowell (“Bombshell”) and Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”).

Simon Amstell’s comedy Benjamin is currently available on DVD From Artsploitation Films. Ordering info can be found Here
Simon Amstell’s second film as director, Benjamin, was released last year into cinemas, to deserved acclaim too. Benjamin is rightly described as a bittersweet comedy, and it stars Colin Morgan, Phenix Brossard, Joel Fry, Jack Rowan, Jessica Raine and Anna Chancellor.
Benjamin, a rising star filmmaker, is on the brink of premiering his difficult second film No Self . He has been too long in the edit. On the eve of the premiere at the London Film Festival, he is introduced to a mesmeric French singer called Noah. As they journey through a contemporary London of vegan restaurants, comedy clubs and avant-garde dance, they slowly manoeuvre themselves and each other towards love. Benjamin is a drama-comedy about feeling isolated and struggling for connection.

“Benjamin” opens on a film within a film, the long-awaited sophomore feature by thirtysomething Irish director Benjamin Oliver (Colin Morgan), whose once-clamorous career buzz has slowed to a murmur. The scene we’re shown looks promising enough: a tartly worded lovers’ argument between two men, one played by Benjamin himself, diffidently explaining his existential struggles with the very concept of romance. The film, titled “No Self,” turns out to be semi-autobiographical account of the director’s gay dating troubles in modern London; the same is true of “Benjamin,” which is self-effacingly written and directed by gifted British comedian Simon Amstell. This doubling creates a wry hall-of-mirrors effect: Amstell sees himself in his protagonist, who in turn would like to see himself that clearly.

"What's it about?" "My inability to love. But I'm fine, now..." Artsploitation Films has released a US trailer for an indie film from the UK titled Benjamin, the second feature by British comedian / filmmaker Simon Amstell. This autobiographical film is a "charmingly offbeat romantic comedy about a mess-of-a-filmmaker juggling the anxieties and excitement of his upcoming film premiere with the fear and awkwardness of a burgeoning romance." A young filmmaker is thrown into emotional turmoil by a new love and an upcoming premiere after being introduced to a French musician. The film stars Colin Morgan, Anna Chancellor, Phénix Brossard, Gabe Gilmour, Jack Rowan, Joel Fry, and Jessica Raine. Seems like a charming and refreshing film, a deeply personal story about figuring yourself out in the midst of life's ups and downs. Here's the new official US trailer (+ poster) for Simon Amstell's Benjamin, direct from YouTube: Benjamin is a character...

Like many Brits probably do, I know Simon Amstell for his run as one of the hosts of the BBC 2 late-night music-quiz comedy show Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He was a nerdy, sarcastic comedian who was often very funny with his interactions with the guests on the show. Aside from that, though, I haven’t seen a lot of him. He has worked on television shows, such as Grandma’s House, but I didn’t catch that, and has toured various stand-up sets, but I only caught one of those. I watched his 2010 stand-up special, Do Nothing, which was a revealing and pretty funny one and I enjoyed it. That was the last time I watched him, so I was pleased to see a new show pop up this year.
His new live special, Set Free, landed on Netflix exclusively this month, and so I was interested to check it out.

Dominic Dromgoole’s unusual, thoughtful drama threads together intimate scenes spanning half a century
There’s a palate-cleansing lucidity and sobriety to this interesting movie, a narrative triptych, showing three intimate scenes of English (and German) life, from 1944, 1982 and 1996: snapshots of homefront life influenced by war, notionally separate scenarios but interconnected by an unstressed generational thread.
It is adapted from the Oxford Stage Company play by Robert Holman – who has co-written the screenplay – and directed by Dominic Dromgoole, who has had an award-winning career in the theatre as former artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe, London, and recently produced Simon Amstell’s movie Benjamin.

The comedian is neurotic, searingly honest and very funny. But has he finally learned to love himself? He talks to Eva Wiseman about his new film, tricky fathers and being a big cat
Simon Amstell was in a car on the way to the premiere of his first feature film, and he was feeling anxious. This wasn’t surprising. Anybody might be expected to be nervous screening the first film they’d written and directed, a semi-autobiographical love story about intimacy. But those who have followed Amstell’s career, whether making musicians sweat on Popworld or the stand-up shows where he unpicks his mental health for laughs, might expect another level of anxiety, a kind of high-pitched hum of anxiety from the back seat.
This is a man who lives in a vacuum of discomfort. Now 39, Amstell has always insisted on revealing the truth, however excruciating that may be. His film,...

As a young film-maker’s career teeters on the brink of disaster, a surprise love affair forces him to rethink the path to happiness
Simon Amstell’s funny, charming and overpoweringly personal comedy is a nervous romance, in which both parties get to be Annie Hall. Amstell creates a detailed ecosystem of in-jokes from the worlds of media and film, and from that cynical context he conjures a miraculously heartfelt love story, sweet and poignant in all its awkwardness.
Colin Morgan plays Benjamin, a once promising young film-maker drowning in self-deprecation and self-doubt: the ironic humour of these personal modes is souring, now that actual failure may be on the cards. He is hyper-aware that a lot of time has passed since his award-winning debut and is now terrified (with good reason) that his follow-up is a disaster.

The actor on shutting down ambitions, clueless politicians and embarrassing farts
Born in Herefordshire, Jessica Raine, 36, graduated from Rada in 2008. She was cast as the lead in the first Call The Midwife in 2012, and made three series. Her subsequent television work includes Line Of Duty, Patrick Melrose and Baptiste. She appears in Simon Amstell’s feature film debut, Benjamin, in cinemas on 15 March. Raine is married to the actor Tom Goodman-Hill; they live in London and are expecting their first child.
When were you happiest?

Among the world premieres screening at the London Film Festival is Benjamin, the directorial debut of British comic Simon Amstell. Perhaps best known for hosting the U.K. TV shows Pop World and Never Mind the Buzzcocks in the noughties, Amstell has spent the past decade focusing on his standup and, more recently, film work, in 2015 writing and directing the short William, starring Alex Lawther (The Imitation Game, Black Mirror). Interestingly, his first feature centers on a filmmaker having his film premiere at the London Film Festival.

The BFI London Film Festival has added a trio of new movies to its lineup, and Maggie Gyllenhaal to its roster of industry speakers.
Venice Silver Lion Winner “The Sisters Brothers,” from two-time London festival competition winner Jacques Audiard, has been added, as have Boots Riley’s satirical movie “Sorry to Bother You” and S. Craig Zahler’s “Dragged Across Concrete.”
“Sorry to Bother you” is “deliriously creative and ambitious to a fault,” Variety said in its Sundance review.
“S. Craig Zahler continues to test the limits of B-movie form in this outsize bad-cop drama, to alternately exhilarating and unpleasant effect,” Variety said of “Dragged Across Concrete.”
The 62nd BFI London Film Festival runs Oct. 10-21. It will open with the European premiere of Steve McQueen’s “Widows” and close with the world premiere of Laurel and Hardy biopic “Stan & Ollie.” Mike Leigh’s “Peterloo” will also have its U.

Korean director Bong Joon Ho’s genetically modified satire puts a skewer through the meat industry – while also shaking up the future of film
A few months ago, BBC iPlayer released Carnage, a sci-fi inflected satire written and directed by Simon Amstell, set in a near-future world in which a now-vegan human race struggles to come to terms with its meat-eating past. Now, Korean director Bong Joon Ho’s cautionary tale of genetically modified meat arrives on Netflix, with a limited but welcome UK theatrical release. Like Carnage, Okja uses the trappings of sci-fi fantasy to ask uncomfortably down-to-earth questions about where our food comes from, exposing the savage teeth of consumerism behind the friendly smile of corporate capitalism.
In the remote mountains of South Korea, young Mija (An Seo Hyun) has raised and bonded with Okja, one of a batch of “super-piglets” created by the agrichemical corporation Mirando as...

Simon Amstell's iPlayer exclusive, Carnage, is worth seeking out. Here's our review...
TV
Carnage is a 70-minute sci-fi vegan comedy, a description which its creator Simon Amstell admits “makes it sound awful”.
It is certainly an experimental commission for the BBC. Amstell - known for sad-com Grandma’s House and causing more than one celebrity walkout on Popworld and Never Mind The Buzzcocks – was asked if he had any ideas weird enough to be an iPlayer exclusive. This mockumentary is what he came up with.
In the year 2067, a group of young people picnic on vegan foods in an idyllic landscape. The idea that anyone ever ate meat is as horrifying as genocide to them, so the film sets out to help the youth of the late 21st century forgive the older generations.
It is important to say at this point, before you tut and go back to eating your sausage and eggs,...

From the Oscars to Super Bowl 50, political anger over race discrimination is front and centre. Black artists aren’t asking to be ‘let in’ to the culture – they are the culture
Something interesting is happening to the ubiquitous back-slapping fests that dominate celebrity coverage: they are becoming fiercely politicised. I don’t mean just the odd liberal speech or cause that is paid lip service by some luvvie, I mean lines are being drawn. The Oscars row about “diversity” is not going to go away. Nor should it. Last night Simon Amstell introduced the Evening Standard Film Awards by saying it had been “another great year for white men”. Best actor winner Idris Elba used speech to discuss Oscars diversity row, while host Simon Amstell joked it was ‘another great year for white men’
The Oscars race row made its presence felt at the Evening Standard film awards in London on Sunday night. The prizes, which are only eligible to British and Irish talent, featured a shortlist more ethnically-diverse than the Academy Awards, whose nominees luncheon takes place on Monday.
In what host Simon Amstell described in his opening monologue as “another great year for white men”, the best actor award was won by Idris Elba for his role as a ruthless rebel fighter who presides over a troop of child soldiers in Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation. The performance, for which Elba has not been nominated for an Oscar, also secured him the same prize at the Screen Actors Guild awards last weekend.

But since the sad loss of Total Wipeout in 2012, the people of our televisions have been too upright. There just haven’t been the obstacle courses around to trip them up. That’s all changed though, with the BBC’s The Getaway Car taking on ITV’s Ninja Warrior UK in the family-friendly 7pm-ish timeslot.
But are either of them a worthy successor to the great of the genre?
