Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

The cinema of David Lynch is a Pandora’s box of desires and beguiling images. Forged through his first feature Eraserhead, the stark black and white images of the feature merge with the ominous sound design to create an enchantingly nightmarish tone – one that Lynch has come to be defined by. The filmmaker’s work outside the medium in sculpting, literature and music too suffices itself into his films as rich tapestries of complex human emotions and abstract expressions.
Throughout Lynch’s filmography there are highly surreal moments that transcend simply being defined in the horror or thriller genre. These scenes and images rest more specifically in the surrealist movement of the 1920s, later conjured into cinema by Louis Buñuel’s Un chien andalou. Like the intoxicating images of the surrealist artists, Lynch’s cinema is continuously exploring the connections that define human interaction and feeling. Whether it is the...

Though Louis C.K.'s transgressions were widely considered the worst kept secret in the comedy world, to some, it really was a secret.
Stephen Colbert welcomed Samantha Bee to the stage at Njpac in Newark, New Jersey, on Dec. 6, where she was the special guest on Sad! A Happy Evening with Stephen Colbert & Samantha Bee, a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival.
During their hour-and-a-half-long chat, the longtime friends talked everything from dealing with politics (specifically President Donald Trump's tumultuous first-year in office) during their late night monologues -- Colbert hosts The Late Show on CBS while Bee is the face of Full Frontal on TBS -- as well as the seismic shift in culture surrounding sexual harassment since the Harvey Weinstein allegations came to light.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story,” what is the best movie about the afterlife?
Kate Erbland (@katerbland), IndieWire
It will come as no surprise to anyone that, as a child, I watched a lot of television. A lot. I was mostly obsessed with HBO — our single movie channel, number 2 on the dial; yes, my childhood TV had a dial, don’t ask — with intermittent deviations into mostly inappropriate mini-series (thus explaining my rarely disclosed expertise on “The Thornbirds”), and was pretty much given free range to watch whatever the hell I wanted, whenever I wanted. Nearly 20 years after its original release, the soundtrack to David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” is being reissued on vinyl. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails — and, more recently, collaborations with directors like David Fincher and Peter Berg — produced the soundtrack, which featured pieces from Angelo Badalamenti, David Bowie and Marilyn Manson.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds released their new album “Skeleton Tree” last night, and along with it an emotional black and white video for “I Need You.”
The King of Darkness is no stranger to the emotionally intense, and the album was hailed by The Guardian as “a masterpiece of love and devastation.” The video comes from the 3D film “One More Time With Feeling,” from director Andrew Dominik (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”).

I live in Los Angeles, and my residency here means that a lot of great film programming-- revival screenings, advance looks at upcoming releases and vital, fascinating glimpses at unheralded, unexpected cinema from around the world—is available to me on a week-by-week basis. But I’ve never been to Cannes. Toronto, Tribeca, New York, Venice, Berlin, Sundance, SXSW, these festivals are all events that I have yet to be lucky enough to attend, and I can reasonably expect that it’s probably going to stay that way for the foreseeable future. I never attended a film festival of any kind until I made my way to the outskirts of the Mojave Desert for the Lone Pine Film Festival in 2006, which was its own kind of grand adventure, even if it wasn’t exactly one for bumping shoulders with critics, stars and fanatics on the French Riviera.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have unveiled a previously-unreleased song 'Give Us A Kiss'.
The track features in upcoming film 20,000 Days on Earth.
It is released as a digital single today (September 4), backed with 'Jubilee Street' (Live from The Sydney Opera House). A limited edition 10" vinyl follows on November 10.
"'Jubilee Street' forced its way into our film," said directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard.
"We'd planned to end with 'Push The Sky Away' and its pertinent lyrics about rock 'n' roll getting you right down to your soul; but after the band played 'Jubilee Street' at Sydney Opera House, we didn't stand a chance.
"Only four songs in and there was Nick, transforming in front of us. Our lives haven't been the same since."
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey, Thomas Wydler, Jim Sclavunos, Conway Savage, Barry Adamson and George Vjestica.

German electronic music Daniel Myer has been blazing new trails through the realm of ambient, industrial and experimental dance music for nearly two decades – not only lending his skills to world-renowned acts like Haujobb and Covenant, but also making a significant contribution to the “Intelligent Dance Music” (Idm) genre through his solo project Architect, constantly evolving in style and method across six albums. His latest and most complex offering Mine finds him painting on a much larger musical canvas, and he's enlisted an impressive roster of guest talent to flesh out this vast, dark vision: contributors include composer & sound designer Ben Lukas Boysen (a.k.a. Hecq); producer Paul “pk” Kendall, who has worked with Depeche Mode, Nitzer Ebb and Barry Adamson; Canadian dark electro unit Comaduster; and vocalist Emese Arvai-Illes of Hungarian gothic synthpop duo Black Nail Cabaret. It's an impressive lineup, and the result plays out on a suitably grand scale.

Part of the Tony Scott: A Moving Target critical project. Go here for the project's description, index and links to project's other movement.
To the overabundance of text, sounds, images—and moving images—in Tony Scott, we reply with something like our own. So let me (try to) keep this (almost as) short as a Tony Scott shot. Scott’s death this past summer would elicit film critics’ own counterpart to American politics: opinions and generalizations bandied between two camps who were, as always, preaching to their respective choirs. And needless to say, such discourses would be about as useful, informative, and interesting as American politics. Scott’s death this past summer would elicit film critics’ own counterpart to American politics: opinions and generalizations bandied between two camps who were, as always, preaching to their respective choirs. And needless to say, such discourses would be about as useful, informative, and interesting as American politics. For Scott’s work was hardly encamped: the outward liberalism of Enemy of the State, perhaps Hollywood’s most overt attack on our surveillance nation and the Nsa, possible only before 9/11, concludes that only Nsa aspirants can take down the Nsa, just as Man on Fire,...

Now a permanent part of the south coast city's cultural calender, Brighton's Cinecity Film Festival returns this week to celebrate it's 10th anniversary edition. Under the patronage of Nick Cave, Paddy Considine, Henry Normal, John Hillcoat, Steve Coogan and Barry Adamson, and run as a partnership between the Duke of York's Picturehouse, Screen Archive South East and The University of Brighton, the festival provides just the sort of eclectic programme designed to appeal to the city's bohemian population.
Spread across 12 venues, including the cinema, Brighton Museum and The Nightingale Theatre, this year's festival - running from November 15 to December 2 - features nine separate strands that encompass major upcoming releases, artists' films, queer cinema and live performance. One strand is a series of events dedicated to Brighton-based, avant-garde filmmaker Jeff Keen, who sadly passed away earlier this year, taking in talks, a study day, displays...

I’ll admit it, I was a little nervous about speaking with Brent Spiner during a recent press Q&A conference call with him and Warehouse 13 showrunner Jack Kenny. I’d spoken with Jack Kenny before and he’s always been a treat, but Brent Spiner? Who knew he would be such a treat? He and Kenny had a terrific rapport and they were clearly enjoying the banter. They even had a way of making each caller feel like part of the cool kids’ group.
There is one paragraph of spoilers, but you’ll see a warning; otherwise, spoilerphobes have no reason to worry. Make sure to read to the end, as there’s a tantalizing tidbit they tossed in at the very end…

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.
And with more and more names who broke out from the pop and rock world -- from veteran composers like Danny Elfman and Clint Mansell to newbies like Trent Reznor and The Chemical Brothers -- moving into composition,...

Rihanna is back in the headlines for her controversial music collaboration with ex Chris Brown for a remix of the song Birthday Cake off her latest album. Here are five things you may not know about this sexy songstress and fierce fashionista.
1. Born February 20, 1988 in St. Michael, Barbados. Her mom was an accountant and her dad worked as a warehouse supervisor.
2. After she arrived in America at age 16 to pursue a music career, she auditioned for Jay-z and was hours later was signed to Def Jam Records.
Has Rihanna Put Chris Brown on Her New Song?
3. Growing up her mother wouldn't let Rihanna wear makeup, so it's ironic that she landed a contract as a Cover Girl spokesmodel.
4. Is picky when it comes to eating and is said to dislike Mexican, Chinese, Japanese and Indian food. She also hates vegetables, but says she makes herself eat some to maintain a balanced diet.

"Haywire," Steven Soderberg's new espionage movie about double-crossed government contractors (it's quite a bit more exciting than I just made it sound), hits theaters this weekend. There is a lot going on in "Haywire," starting with the interesting decision to cast Gina Carano, an Mma fighter, as the lead character. There's so much going on, in fact, that we decided an obsessive chat with Hollywood.com's Matt Patches was necessary. (Spoiler alert, obviously.) Mike: I'm an idiot. I thought "The Grey" was coming out this weekend. Matt: January is an amorphous cloud of movies: They all come out this weekend. None of them come out this weekend. Mike: Maybe we should just leave this conversation at that. Matt: Ha ha. Mike: Does that mean that you didn't like "Haywire"? Matt: No, I did like "Haywire." It's not revelatory in a way that clears the fog of January. But it's solid...

The Hollywood Interview is sad to report the untimely death of rapper/actor Heavy D at age 44. I interviewed Heavy D for Venice Magazine, back in June of 2005, as he was making his theatrical debut in Hollywood, in the play "Medal of Honor Rag." He was a soft-spoken, thoughtful man whose imposing physical presence couldn't hide what seemed like an inherently gentle nature. Of the hundreds of hours of interviews I've logged over the years, ours was one of the most memorable. He will be missed. Rest in peace.

Rumor has it, Miley Cyrus is getting serious with boyfriend Liam Hemsworth and has been thinking of tying the knot with him. The report, however, is quickly slammed by Liam's rep, who insisted to Gossip Cop that it was only a "false story" and "not true". Another insider close to the Australian actor also told Hollywood Life that the couple are only happily dating.
The claim that Miley and Liam are already thinking about marriage was first sparked Star Magazine. A source told the publication that Miley got even closer to Liam's family while she was doing her Gypsy Heart tour in Melbourne, Australia. "They're hanging out like one big happy family," so said the source. "Everyone wonders when Miley and Liam will take the next step and get engaged!"
It was also mentioned how Miley arranged for the Hemsworths to get VIP treatment at her June 23 show. "She sent...

Therapist is the dark debut film by Barry Adamson, who is better known for his haunting movie scores for Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers and David Lynch's Lost Highway than for getting behind the camera. The 40-minute film noir is a about an ethereal Polish immigrant, Monika, searching for her sister. Monika's story merges into that of a film-maker seeking solace on the therapist's couch.

Scream 4 is done. It's out there. And as we ride a wave of publicity, press screenings and more leading up towards the April 15 release, fans will have to dodge an obstacle course of spoilers revealing who dies, when they die, how they die and, of course, who or what is Ghostface this time around. For the record, I have no idea - I'm also avoiding spoilers at all costs - so feel free to read on. Besides the onslaught of spoilers, one of the film's biggest controversies was the reported creative differences surrounding franchise creator and the screenwriter of this fourth film, Kevin Williamson. We heard that sometime in the middle of production he left and Ehren Kruger (who wrote Scream 3 and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) came in. Director Wes Craven has finally spoken out on these issues and while you can read his comments below, beware...

In the latest issue of Total Films Magazine director Wes Craven finally spoke up about some hot button rumors that have run ramped since production began for Scream 4. From the initial script debacle (writer Kevin Williamson's script was rewokred by Ehren Kruger) to the talks of this being a whole new trilogy, Craven as always is very candid with his answers...
When asked about the script debacle and what exactly went down, Craven had this to say:
"During production, Craven tweeted that he was “no longer in control of the script” as Scream 3 writer Ehren Kruger came in to rework Williamson’s draft. “I was just stating the fact,” he recalls. “In some ways it’s a Wes Craven film, and in way it’s not entirely, because it’s not a script I have control of. It’s ultimately controlled by what the studio wants in the script.

1. True Blood Rolling Stone Cover. The blood. The touching. The lack of shirts. Skarsgard, why so modest? Paquin’s thigh can support itself. Paquin, cover up. Show some decorum. Moyer, you’re good. 2. Mark Paul Gosselaar’s Sex Scene on Weeds. This is a personal favorite. A water shed moment in television history. Wherein Mark Paul Gosselaar, everyone’s favorite Preppy, takes Mary-Louise Parker and does her in/on a bar. I recommend watching it again. This still hardly does it justice. Nsfw. 3. Sure, he’s been famous in his own right as a principal dancer at The New York City Ballet for quite some time, but when Natalie Portman deems you worthy to procreate and marry, it’s a whole new ball game.
