This article contains spoilers for Jack Ryan season 3.
Through two seasons, Prime Video’s Jack Ryan has covered some well-trodden topics for CIA spy thrillers. Jack Ryan season 1 found Tom Clancy’s titular CIA analyst on the case of an Islamic extremist’s curious bank statements. Season 2 moved the action to South America, where Jack tried to ensure the democratic legitimacy of a Venezuelan election (a welcome change of pace for the CIA).
While both of those seasons were reasonable successes for the series, Jack Ryan was still missing a prevalent element from Tom Clancy’s writings and spy thrillers in general. That’s right: the Russians, baby. America’s favorite Cold War era big bad finally makes its return in Jack Ryan season 3, albeit in a little more measured, less jingoistic way. The bad guy in Jack Ryan season 3 isn’t so much Russia, but Russians – more specifically, a...

Ryanverse fans, rejoice. The Prime Video action thriller Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which stars John Krasinski as the titular CIA operative, is finally back for a third season, more than three years after Season 2 started streaming. Even Jack would have forgotten some plot details in a hiatus that long, so we’re here to offer a refresher. As Season 2 starts, Jack has his eye on Venezuela, where Gloria Bonalde (Cristina Umaña) is running for president against incumbent Nicolás Reyes (Jordi Mollà). Jack suspects Russia is shipping weapons to Venezuela, but when he heads there on a diplomatic mission, Reyes denies the surreptitious dealings. And while he’s there, Jack reconnects with his old boss Jim Greer (Wendell Pierce), who has also been tracking the shipping containers, and spends a night with a woman, later revealed to be Harriet Baumann (Noomi Rapace), an agent with Germany’s Bundesnachrichtendienst (Bnd) intelligence service.

“Life was imitating art in this instance,” Wendell Pierce says about how “Jack Ryan” previewed the current Venezuelan crisis relating to the legitimacy of the results of the last presidential election. “It was just an espionage show that predated all the events that were happening, but was pretty authentic to what possibly could happen in Venezuela — and it did,” the actor continues in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above) about the second season, which was produced before the real-life crisis, but released after it got underway. He says about the response to the show’s geopolitical savvy, “There were some people that were very upset, thinking that we were trying to use our platform to get involved in the politics of Venezuela and were being used by our government as a tool to persuade certain things to happen in Venezuela politically and so, it was amazing...

Jack Ryan season 2 ends with few surprises, though it does lay the groundwork for some more recognizable stories.
Obviously, this article contains majors spoilers for Jack Ryan season 2.
The second season of Amazon’s Jack Ryan series with John Krasinski, which dropped a day early on Halloween, manages to address many of the viable complaints that critics levied at its first season -- while also injecting more emotional developments into an otherwise straight and narrow storyline. Krasinski’s take on Tom Clancy’s iconic character is a little bit more human this time around. Meanwhile, the latest plot that he and ex-boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce) find themselves unraveling is a bit more nuanced than season one’s global terrorist extravaganza.
Even so, Jack Ryan’s latest adventure in a dictatorial Venezuela ends pretty much the way general audiences will expect. President Nicolás Reyes (Jordi Mollà) loses...

This Jack Ryan season 2 review contains no spoilers.
The same day that Apple TV+ is set to debut, and a week and a half before Disney’s own streaming service will do the same, Amazon’s Jack Ryan season 2 will premiere. Judging by the sheer amount of new content the smartphone maker’s new platform is about to drop (not to mention premieres at Netflix and elsewhere), eight new episodes of John Krasinski’s latest take on the popular Tom Clancy character obviously isn’t enough to counter it all. But that’s not going to stop Amazon from planting its “Peak TV” flag and letting it fly.
Besides, the latter finds itself with a very important advantage: everyone is already familiar with Jack Ryan, the first season of which was okay but fun.

"What's the most major threat on the world's stage," Jack asks the group before him in the official trailer for Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Season 2.
Did you guess oil?
Because after asking the question, Jack (John Kracizynski) launches into some details about Venezuela.
"Venezuela is the single richest resource of oil on the planet," Jack continues.
"So, why is this country in the midst of one of the greatest humanitarian crises in history," he concludes.

Suleiman is not the name of the show I’m reviewing, but unfortunately, it would have been more apt based on the six episodes of Jack Ryan available for press prior the new Amazon series dropping on Friday, August 31.
John Krasinski, still best known for his role on The Office yet fast becoming a movie star in his own right, plays the titular Jack Ryan with the requisite finesse.
But the story never quite catches fire for the former Marine turned CIA analyst getting his feet wet again on the ground as far more time is spent on the nuances and particulars of bad guy Mousa Bin Suleiman (Ali Suliman).
The first scene of the series features not what established the life of Ryan, but what drove Suleiman to become the hunted man Ryan finds -- think the next Osama Bin Laden.

A CIA agent made famous by one of America’s best-known spy novelists has been tasked with a very special mission — turning around one of streaming TV’s most massive ships.
The new series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” predates the planned pivot by new Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, in which the streamer will move from boutique TV to a tentpole-heavy strategy. But it fits neatly within that programming philosophy, and its fate will provide an understanding of whether the site’s reboot can be effective. The Jack Ryan series of books and films is beloved, if aging; if it can work on Amazon’s often-vexed service, it bodes well for even more ambitious genre series, such as the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” effort.

Michael Kelly is the latest to join the “Jack Ryan” cast.

Krasinski stars as the titular CIA officer, while Rapace will play the series regular role of Harriet “Harry” Baumann, a highly capable, sharply intelligent and intoxicatingly charming BND (Germany’s Secret Intelligence) agent, who crosses paths with Jack Ryan in South America. Hoogenakker will play Matice, a tough and salty American who works black ops for the CIA. The first episode of Amazon’s Tom Clancy adaptation “Jack Ryan” saw its U.S. public debut Friday afternoon in Ballroom 20 at San Diego Comic-Con. And as it happens, the show works pretty well, not only as decent counter-programming for the convention, but if the episode is any guide, for the source material too.
Star John Krasinski turns out to be a very credible fit to play the lode-bearing Clancy-verse character. Co-star Wendell Pierce’s beleaguered, on-his-last-second-chance CIA official James Greer, is a good counterweight to Krasinski’s anxious yet mild-mannered approach to playing Jack Ryan.
On the other hand, given the show’s setting, legitimate concerns can be raised about the kind of roles actors of West Asian descent are offered, and how people from those cultures are portrayed. However, a last-minute reveal that felt askance of the worldview Tom Clancy expressed in his dozens of novels suggests the...

Jack Ryan isn’t looking for trouble, but trouble has found Jack Ryan. The Tom Clancy hero comes to Amazon in August for “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” turning back the clock to a more innocent time when he was an up-and-coming CIA analyst pushing papers and rolling back in his desk chair. Of course, that would make for some fairly boring on-screen action, and thus a field agent is born.

Amazon has dropped a new action-packed trailer for their upcoming spy thriller “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.”
Entitled “Presidents,” the trailer is bookended by quotes from Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy Jr., making it a timely release for this fourth of July holiday.
“Though our challenges are fearsome, so our strengths,” Clinton’s quote begins the action, with the titular hero (played by John Krasinski) shown in his comfortable CIA cubicle. But the imagery that follows proves just how complicated his life will become soon enough in the series, as building explode, armed forces perform ops in night vision, and he gets shot at and is forced to grab a gun and fire back.
A rendition of “All Along the Watchtower” performed by Devlin featuring Ed Sheeran plays under the trailer, which ends with Kennedy’s promise that “we stand today on the edge of a new frontier” as the premiere date flashes.

John Hoogenakker, who recurs in Season 1 of Amazon’s drama series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, has been promoted to series regular for Season 2.
Hoogenakker plays Matice, a tough and salty American who works black ops for the CIA. At first skeptical of what appears to be a desk-jockey, he quickly develops a new respect for Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) after seeing him handle himself in the field.
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which hails from the Lost duo of co-showrunner Carlton Cuse and writer Graham Roland, Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media and Paramount TV, is a reinvention with a modern sensibility of the famed and lauded Tom Clancy hero, starring Krasinski and Abbie Cornish. It centers on Jack Ryan (Krasinski), an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. He uncovers a pattern in terrorist communications that launches him into the center of a dangerous...

Amazon has officially greenlit an eight-episode second season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, starring and executive produced by John Krasinski, well ahead of the action drama series’ August 31 global debut on Prime Video. The writing team for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, from Paramount Television and Skydance Television, had already been working on scripts for season two under series creators/executive producers Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland who continue as co-showrunners. The show’s producing team also had been scouting international locations for the globe-trotting adventure, a reinvention with a modern sensibility of the famed Tom Clancy hero.
The formal Season 2 green light comes on the heels of the blockbuster success of Krasinski’s horror movie A Quiet Place, which he co-wrote, directed and starred in, turning him into an instant hot commodity in features.

Unsane, the new stalker thriller from Steven Soderbergh is the latest film to be shot entirely on a mobile phone. This has, understandably, has been at the forefront of the buzz surrounding this movie, however it should not eclipse the fact that Soderbergh has delivered a thought-provoking and tense film. The film is released in the Us on the 23rd of March, along with the UK release, and we complete our coverage of the film with an interview with two of the film’s stars.
Directed from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the film stars Claire Foy (The Crown), Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project), Jay Pharoah (Ride Along), Juno Temple (Atonement), Aimee Mullins (Stranger Things) and Amy Irving (Traffic).

Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane sacrificially evaluates if Apple’s iPhone videography can sustain a traditional narrative feature (no joke, every single scene). It’s not the first time bulky cameras have been swapped for iPhone recorders – look at Hooked Up or numerous horror anthology entries – but Unsane differentiates itself by ignoring found footage confines. Soderbergh goes guerilla and brings to “life” a psych-ward paranoia thriller with unsettled stalker overtones via smartphone. Always rolling with his handheld device, never breaking from mission. It’s a gamble, and one that shakily opens like a YouTuber who discovered blue gel filters for the first time – never gaining momentum, but not always at the fault of cinematography.

MaryAnn’s quick take… As a piece of craft, this is a smack in the face to Hollywood’s bloated blockbusters. As a piece of pulp, it brings a sharp, smart feminist twist to familiar tropes of cinematic paranoia. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women; mostly a fan of Soderbergh’s work

In coming out of a short self imposed retirement, filmmaker Steven Soderbergh clearly was not going to return to blockbuster cinema. Smaller movies consistently were where Soderbergh made his mark, whether it was Sex, Lies & Videotape or even his revolutionary approach to Bubble. The latter work has a clear influence on his newest project, Unsane. This week, he unleashes the flick in theaters, going much wider with the release than you’d expect. An experimental film, shot on an iPhone, it’s another clear example of the filmmaker refusing to rest on his laurels. Back in the business, he continues to do it his way. Frankly, would you expect him to do it any other way? The movie is a hybrid thriller with even a bit of a horror element added to the mix. The IMDb plot description leaves a lot to the imagination: “A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution,...

Leave it to Steven Soderbergh to take on sexual predators in the form of a pulp thriller that he shot on an iPhone like a genius kid with a new toy. Unsane is a B-movie by a 55-year-old director known showing his A-game for genre filmmaking – but he's still the same renegade who helped kickstart a revolution with 1989's sex, lies & videotapes, won an Oscar for 2000's Traffic, hit box-office paydirt with three Ocean's Eleven romps and then quit movies for four years to do risky TV like The Knick.

Steven Soderbergh’s “Unsane” doesn’t open in theaters nationwide until March 23, but he’s already gone ahead and finished production on an entire new feature to be released later this year. The director’s “High Flying Bird” was announced at the beginning of February, with Soderbergh planning a two-week shoot at the end of the month with his “The Knick” star André Holland.
Not only is Soderbergh finished with principle photography, but he already has a first cut of the film locked. The director made the announcement on Twitter with some pretty amazing minor details. Soderbergh wrapped filming on “High Flying Bird” on March 15 at 1:09pm. By 3:41pm on the same day, the director already had a first cut of the drama ready to be seen.

Soderbergh’s iPhone-shot film boasts an excellent Claire Foy as a woman trapped in a psychiatric facility – but it’s ridiculous in all the wrong ways
Steven Soderbergh has ventured into the world of psychiatric grand guignol before, with his excellent 2013 thriller Side Effects. But this movie, from screenwriters Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer – known for comedy – is ultimately ridiculous in all the wrong ways. It’s a crazily broad, brash exploitation horror-thriller shot on an iPhone, with creeped-out distorted cinematography, menacingly low lighting, and pastiche midnight-movie design effects. The film has a ragbag of themes including stalking, mental illness and the private medical insurance racket; these competing ideas cancel each other out and aren’t scary.
And yet it has to be said that before things escalate into anarchic silliness, Unsane does pack a punch. Claire Foy brings a fierce commitment to the role of Sawyer Valentini, a woman...

No rest for the weary when it comes to Steven Soderbergh’s 2018. Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's 11, Logan Lucky) is lining up the next film project that he will produce and possibly direct. The film is an action thriller called Planet Kill and it's an original story that comes from Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, The Bourne Ultimatum) and James Greer (Unsane, The Spy Next Door).
There are no details on what the story for this film will entail, but judging by the title, it sounds like it could turn out to be a fun flick! It's the kind of title you would see for a grindhouse type film and I'm really curious to know what the story will entail. The title is similar to Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse film Planet Terror.
Soderbergh and Greer previously worked together on the upcoming psychological horror thriller Unsane, which was shot entirely on an iPhone. That movie looks great, and you can watch the trailer for it here.

Amazon has been keeping its attempt at a Jack Ryan TV series away from public scrutiny until very recently. Announced ages ago, the show - based on precisely zero of the actual books and starring The Office's John Krasinski - will focus on Ryan's early years as a CIA analyst wading into the murky waters of his first field assignment.
