Paramount’s Parker Finn-directed horror pic Smile has laughed all the way past the 200M mark worldwide. After six weeks in release – and with scary strong holds – the split through Sunday is 99.1M domestic and 103.8M from the international box office for a global cume of 202.9M.
This original movie has positively beamed with only slight drops (and in some cases increases) throughout its run, while carving out a niche and navigating its own path amidst varied competition. It initially released in late September and rose a wild 32 in its sophomore frame internationally while boasting the second-best hold ever (-22) for an R-rated horror movie domestically in the second weekend.
This weekend internationally, it added 5.1M from 62 overseas markets for a 35 dip. That’s post-Halloween and with other horror movies in play.

Paramount’s Parker Finn-directed horror pic Smile has laughed its way across the 100M mark globally. And it did so in under two weeks of release. Through Tuesday, the gross is 102.3M worldwide, made up of 55.5M domestic and 46.8M from the international box office.
From Paramount Players and Temple Hill, the movie has seen some scary holds. Significantly, the overseas sophomore frame (with actuals included) was 32 above opening weekend. As we noted on Sunday, when we saw it easily hitting 100M, that is just wild – a hold of that sort is simply shocking. Word of mouth is playing its part as well as savvy timing and marketing on the movie that stars Sosie Bacon, Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert, Caitlin Stasey with Kal Penn and Rob Morgan.

Oscar ballots will be in the hands of AMPAS voters on March 5, and they’ll have until March 10 to turn them in. All the predicting, theorizing and prognosticating have led to this crucial six-day period when the nearly 10,000 Academy members make their choices among the year’s achievements. As we head into this critical period, in a year defined by a global pandemic that has changed the way we look at cinema, we’re still reminded that movies are well worth celebrating.
Streamers provided access to some of the best films of 2020. This year, no matter what AMPAS ends up selecting as its nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards, most films will be widely available for consumers to watch before the ceremony. Cinema continues to evolve, and we can’t stop what’s coming. As with any true cinephile, my choices for what touched me from this extended eligibility are personally mine.

The Producers Guild of America has issued an extensive safety guide for independent producers as they return to work amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The PGA, which has more than 8,000 members, unveiled the 57-page document Monday with detailed recommendations on testing, maintaining physical distancing and wearing personal protective equipment. It includes “red light protocols” on how to manage production when a team member exhibits Covid-19 symptoms or tests positive for Covid-19, including potentially shutting down and restarting a production.
“Before beginning pre-production, the production company must have an infectious disease safety plan and have conducted a risk assessment to address ways the Covid-19 hazard will be mitigated on the production,” the report said. “It is recommended that production processes be altered to adapt for Covid-19, rather than adapting Covid-19 processes to existing production practices. Charlie Kaufman, the writer of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Being John Malkovich,” is back with his first movie in five years — an adaptation of Iain Reid’s bestselling, cult horror novel “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” on Netflix that teased its first trailer Thursday.
And this latest trip into Kaufman’s mind, which finds Jessie Buckley on a road trip to meet her boyfriend’s parents, is as strange, offbeat funny and disturbing as you’ve come to expect from one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed mind-benders.
“I’m Thinking of Ending Things” stars Buckley as a young woman with second thoughts about taking a road trip with her new boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to his family farm. But when she finds herself trapped at the farm during a snowstorm with Jake’s mother (Toni Collette) and father (David Thewlis), she begins to question the nature of everything she...

Jesus is back — that is, John Turturro’s Jesus Quntana character from “The Big Lebowski” in a Screen Media’s trailer for the spinoff movie “The Jesus Rolls.”
The footage shows Turturro, who also directed, with his memorable licking of a bowling ball before sending it down a lane and into outer space.
“The Jesus Rolls” also stars Bobby Cannavale, Susan Sarandon, Jon Hamm, Audrey Tautou, and Christopher Walken. The trailer did not include an appearance by Jeff Bridges’ character Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski from the original 1998 movie, in which Turturro’s character taunted Lebowski and his bowling team at a bowling alley and referred to himself as “The Jesus.”
“The Jesus Rolls” follows a trio of misfits — Turturro, Cannavle and Tatou — whose sexually charged dynamic evolves into a surprising love story as their spontaneous and flippant attitude towards the past or future backfires time and again, even as they inadvertently perform good deeds.

What might appear to be an homage to David Bowie glitz on its cover, is actually much deeper in Brady Corbet’s Vox Lux which follows the unconventional metamorphosis of a young teenager from school shooting survivor to tortured pop idol.
Similar to how Natalie Portman pulled out all the stops and transformed into a sublime, razor-sharp ballerina for her Oscar-winning role in 2010’s Black Swan, she made certain she was vocally prepped and choreographed before her 10 days of shooting on Vox Lux (the entire film was shot over 22 days). Financing dropped out prior to the pic’s production and delaying its start which provided Portman with extra prep time so she was ready to hit the ground running when filming began.
“It gives you more time when things fall apart, as long as they come back together again,” Portman says.

Neon has landed Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux,” a drama about a troubled pop diva that’s drawing some serious awards buzz for star Natalie Portman. The film premiered to largely favorable reviews at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Several studios were interested in nabbing the project.
It is possible that the indie studio could push “Vox Lux” into theaters this year in order to qualify for Oscars, something it did to great success with “I Tonya,” another Toronto acquisition that went on to score an Academy Award for Allison Janney.
“Vox Lux” fits in with Neon’s strategy of partnering with younger, edgier auteurs. The film is only the second feature for Corbet, who previously directed “The Childhood of a Leader.” Previous Neon releases include “Colossal,” “Beach Rats,” and “Ingrid Goes West.” The studio had an arthouse breakout with “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about triplets separated...

Natalie Portman is Celeste, a pop star on the verge of a comeback, in “Vox Lux.” A teaser for the film is out ahead of the film’s North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed and written by Brady Corbet, “Vox Lux” is his followup to his award-winning directorial debut “The Childhood of a Leader.” “Vox Lux” already premiered at the Venice Film Festival, garnering rave reviews.
In the 45-second clip, the roars from a crowd build as, who we can assume is Celeste (Portman), makes her way to the stage two minutes before a performance. Mysterious string music begins playing over the scene as the camera follows Celeste from behind as she heads to what appears to be an important performance.

The great director Sidney Lumet brought a beautifully acted version of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull to the screen in 1968, but apparently it has taken another half-century to get a another version that gives Chekhov’s 1895 play a new spin in movies.
I have to say, the new The Seagull compares favorably to any previous attempt, particularly in bringing out the lighter aspects of what is a very funny piece. Lumet’s version had the likes of James Mason and Vanessa Redgrave among others, and the 2018 model is similarly blessed with a brilliant cast at the top of their game. And though director Michael Mayer and screenwriter Stephen Karam come largely from the American theater, this sparkling version feels anything but theatrical; it has been gloriously shot and is beautifully cinematic.
But as I say in my video review above, it is all on the page and in the playing.

Last time we saw Aaron Eckhart he was handcuffed to a railing inside the White House situation room in Olympus Has Fallen. Call us old-fashioned but we think an actor of his calibre - the erstwhile Harvey Dent, no less - deserves better treatment, which is hopefully what his new thriller Fade Out will provide. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it's a Hitchcockian potboiler that'll see Eckhart's character recovering from a nervous breakdown in a beachside villa with a stunning wife to tend his brow and make him tasty cocktails. As his recovery progresses, he starts work on a screenplay in which a cuckolded husband murders his cheating wife. Guess what? Life begins to imitate art, as the screenwriter loses his grip on what's real and what isn't. Fade Out is the debut feature of Robert Salerno, a veteran producer behind Oscar-worthy dramas such as Arbitrage and A Single Man.

As part of the How They Did It Panel Series, the “We Need A Bigger Boat-Producing Independent Cinema” panel had producers speak about the struggles they had not only making their first films, but also the films they’re working on right now.
