Brian Wilson has joined forces with the late Glen Campbell for a posthumous duet of Campbell’s song, “Strong.”
“Strong (with Brian Wilson)” is the latest entry in the upcoming duet collection Glen Campbell Duets — Ghost on the Canvas Sessions, which is out everywhere on April 19th. Originally appearing on Campbell’s 2011 “farewell” album Ghost on the Canvas, “Strong” is a warm, string-laden track that describes Campbell’s onset of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Campbell vows to his wife to maintain his resilience in the face of the disease, confessing, “All I want to be for you is strong.” All the while, signature harmonies from Wilson add a dreamy, hopeful feel, and Wilson shares Campbell’s verses with conviction and clarity. Listen to the song below.
Of the posthumous collaboration, Brian Wilson said in a statement, “Glen was a great singer and a great guy. Our intention in doing ‘Strong’ was...

As the tenth anniversary of Glen Campbell’s Ghost on the Canvas was approaching, Dave Kaplan —whose Surfdog Records released the haunting album in 2011 — was pondering ways to honor it. A late-period landmark for Campbell, who died in 2017 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Ghost on the Canvas found the venerable pop-country singer and guitarist covering songs by a new generation of writers — alt-rock types like Paul Westerberg, Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard, Jakob Dylan, and Teddy Thompson. The album ranked Number 88 on Rolling Stone‘s list of...

Pop singer Lola Dee, who recorded for the Columbia and Mercury labels in the 1950s and toured around the world with the likes of Bob Hope, Jimmy Durante and Johnnie Ray, has died. She was 95.
Dee died Thursday of natural causes at a nursing facility in Hinsdale, Illinois, her publicist and CD producer, Alan Eichler, announced.
After signing a five-year contract with Chicago-based Mercury Records, a recently formed company that had Frankie Laine, Vic Damone and Patti Page on its roster, the singer, then billed as Lola Ameche, teamed with the Al Trace Orchestra for 1951’s “Pretty Eyed Baby,” which reached No. 21 on the Billboard charts.
She and Trace followed that year with another hit, “Hitsity Hotsity,” and she recorded more than two dozen songs over the next three years, including swinging versions of “Dance Me Loose,” “Old Man Mose,” “Down Yonder,” “Take Two to Tango” and “Don’t Let...

Brian Setzer has a new solo album coming out on September 15th called The Devil Always Collects. Ahead of its release, the Stray Cats frontman has shared the record’s lead single “Girl on the Billboard,” as well as a run of 2023 tour dates — his first live shows in four years.
The Devil Always Collects is Setzer’s eleventh solo effort, which he co-produced himself along with Julian Raymond and mixer Chris Lord-Alge. A press release promises “virtuosic” guitar riffs and “non-stop freight train rhythms” that will appease “fans of rock, Americana, rockabilly, and punk” alike. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Like a lot of Setzer’s work, “Girl on the Billboard” sounds retro by nature; the song was originally popularized in 1965 by country music singer Del Reeves. “It’s an old truckers song,” Setzer adds in a statement. “At first I wasn’t getting the sound I wanted until I picked...

Jerry Lee Lewis, one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll, has died at age 87.
Lewis was known for such iconic rock hits as “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On”.
Born in Ferriday, Louisiana in 1935, Lewis melded the various musical influences — including gospel, blues and country — into a unique piano-driven sound, with his incendiary stage performances earning him the nickname “The Killer”.
In 1956, Lewis entered a Memphis recording studio with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins to form the very first supergroup, dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet.

According to a release issued by the late rocker’s talent agency, Lewis had been in poor health for the past few years, having “abused his body so thoroughly as a young man he was given little chance of lasting through middle age, let alone old age.

Car songs are a must on any Brian Setzer album. His latest, Gotta Have the Rumble, is no exception — it opens with the one-two punch of the racer’s taunt “Checkered Flag” and the noir-ish “Smash Up on Highway One.” But the singer, guitarist, and co-founder of rockabilly heroes the Stray Cats favors a particular kind of car. In other words, there’s no Tesla parked in the driveway of his Minnesota home. “No, no, no,” Setzer laughs when asked the question. “That’s a pretty amazing ride, though.”

Generation C is being invaded by the B-Girls. 80s cult singer Josie Cotton, best known for blurring the angst of both liberals and conservatives with “Johnny Are You Queer?,” sees the science fiction claustrophobia arising from the coronavirus pandemic and wants to help. Cotton joined the Minutemen’s Mike Watt, the Runaways’ Cherie Currie, and Eddie Spaghetti on the song “Flatten the Curve,” to benefit the Jubilee Consortium and the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. Everyone else, she advises to cuddle up with a bad movie. Cotton ventured beyond the valley of the dolls in a “so-bad-they’re-good” movie hunt to accompany this real life B-Movie scenario and re-released Invasion of the B-Girls.

If you’re going to make music, you’re going to need an audio interface.
“An audio interface, in the simplest terms, is the piece of gear you need to get sound in and out of a computer,” explains Grammy-winning producer, Dave Darling, who’s worked with everyone from Brian Setzer to Mötley Crüe. “An audio interface takes the source sound – microphone, guitar, synth, etc. — and converts it into a language that your computer can understand and record,” he explains. “Ever try plugging your guitar into a computer? You can’t!

Today’s announcement that the Gibson Amphitheatre on the Universal CityWalk is going dark for good puts an end to a 40-year chapter in La concert history. The former Universal Amphitheatre was rumored to be on the chopping block amid the flurry of redevelopment at Universal Studios that begins in the summer — the venue’s lease agreement is set to expire in September. But the 6,000-plus-seat hall has struggled to consistently book big-name acts amid competition from La Live’s Nokia Theatre, which opened in 2007, and subscription series partner the Greek Theatre; the Gibson’s 2013 schedule is heavy with international acts including Gloria Trevi, Il Volo, Eros Ramazzotti and Lila Downs. A handful of already booked post-September shows — including the 10th anniversary of the Brian Setzer Orchaestra’s annual Christmas Rocks gala — will be rerouted to other venues. Five disparate discs will go head to head in the Best Rock Album category during Sunday's 54th Grammy Awards (or, probably, during the pre-televised ceremony), which is a pretty apt way to sum up a year when the Decemberists topped the Billboard charts and the best-selling rock record — Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More — was actually released in 2010. In short, 2011 didn't make a whole lot of sense.

"The Sing-Off" is back on NBC with 16 all new a capella groups ready to wow us with their vocal acrobatics. The eight groups performing during the two-hour premiere are: Yellowjackets, Urban Method, Cat's Pajamas, Kinfolk 9, Vocal Point, Fannin Family, Afro-Blue and Delilah.
1. Yellowjackets, World Cup Anthem "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan
This was a heckuva way to kick off the show. How uplifting. Great soloists and the key change was masterful. Excellent job. Some of the choreography was a little cheesy, but the story behind their performance was great. Shawn's critique that it was "powerful" was right on.
2. Fannin Family, "Who Says" by Selena Gomez
It's the Von Trapps of the 21st century! I am immediately struck by how well their voices blend, it's incredible. Youngest sib 14-uear-old Maria is the usual soloist, which is cool. She's very talented, but you can tell the backups are no slouches either. Another great performance.

Sure, Lady Gaga may have plenty of Grammy Awards, number one hits and a Weird Al parody to boot, but there is one pivotal milestone that she has yet to achieve – a voice appearance on Fox’s “The Simpsons." Well, that’s finally about to change – this week, Mother Monster recorded her lines for an episode titled “Lisa Goes Gaga” that is set to air next spring.
Gaga talked with Entertainment Weekly about how excited she was to be a part of the iconic show, saying, “I make music, but I don’t do voice-overs every day of the week, and their characters are so awesomely convincing and sincere and wild and funny, I had to remind myself constantly of the sincerity of the humor.”
Series creator Matt Groening had nothing but praise for Gaga. “Since the very beginning, I’ve always wanted to have the most iconic personalities of our time,...

Nashville, Tenn. — Not all pioneers know exactly where they're going, and that was definitely the case for Johnny Cash & The Tennessee Two.
Cash, guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant – the last surviving member of the group who passed away Sunday morning at age 83 in Jonesboro, Ark., after an aneurysm and stroke – changed the future of American music and popular culture with their distinct boom-chicka-boom beat.
Grant fell ill after rehearsing for a concert to raise funds for the restoration of Cash's boyhood home, said Cash's daughter, Rosanne Cash.
Grant always freely admitted the soon-to-be historic trio had no special insight as they shaped that universal beat – a sound that launched a million imitators with songs such as "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues, "Ring of Fire," "Big River" and "Cry Cry Cry."
"Our inability had more to do with our success than our ability did, and I'm not ashamed of it,...

Memo to Nigel Lythgoe: No more Saw movie marathons — or any other flicks from the torture-porn category — for the rest of the So You Think You Can Dance season. Because frankly, I’m not sure I can handle another result-show telecast in which our at-risk dancers get stretched on the emotional rack, herded over psychological hot coals, and starved for a final verdict — only to be told at the last minute that they’ll all be back to dance again next week.

After Laurieann Gibson co-directed her last two videos, Lady Gaga is reuniting with one of the busiest music-video directors in the game for her "Edge of Glory" clip. According to fan site GagaDaily.com, she will be working again with Joseph Kahn.
The two have worked together in the past on the sunny, candy-coated clip for "Eh Eh" and then on the darker-themed "LoveGame." So really, anything's possible when these two hook up for the '80's-sounding pop smash "Edge."
For those unfamiliar with Kahn's impressive résumé, it includes shooting for everyone from Gaga (obviously) and Eminem to Chris Brown and the Backstreet Boys. He also loves to shoot other pop princesses, including Britney Spears and Katy Perry. Kahn knows a thing or two about taking a big pop record and making a big pop video.

With 'Fight' short film set to premiere Wednesday (April 20), here's a look back at the beer-soaked history of the 1986 video.
By James Montgomery

You get the feeling that, back in their hell-raising License To Ill heyday, the Beastie Boys derived some sort of perverse pleasure from blindsiding unsuspecting interviewers with profanities or non sequiturs. Or at least by dumping beer on them.
Sufficed to say, they've mellowed some in recent years (their vocabulary has improved, too), but back in the day, the Beasties lived to torment the media, and they did so by any means necessary.
Take, for example, this rather revelatory bit of tape shot on December 31, 1986, at MTV's 6th annual "Rock 'N Roll New Year's Eve Ball" (a party so huge that both Brian Setzer and the Georgia Satellites were in attendance). In it, a poor MTV...

This is a Recap of Boardwalk Empire, Season 1, Episode 11, entitled “Paris Green”. We’ll get to the ‘cappin in a sec, right after a quick pause for commercial… This Christmas… [Cue Music]: He’s finding out… the Boardwalk Empire… never prepared him for the Workshop Empire… Alright, alright, stop the Boardwalk Empire “Christmas Trailer” joke — that Brian Setzer video is really just way too awesome on its own. Can we all just watch it on repeat and skip recapping the rest of this episode? No? Alright, fine, here’s some words and pictures that happened: This week’s episode begins with a very Sopranos-esque “Crazy opening shot…turns out to be something pretty normal” close-up on the magician Hardeen — the Billy Baldwin of his day — escaping from a straight jacket upside-down. Hardeen later joins Nucky, Margaret, Margaret’s mistress friend Annabelle, and Annabelle’s fat money-giver-toer Harry in the parlour for some after-magic magic,...

Legendary guitarist gets small at New York's Iridium club.
By Kurt Loder
Jeff Beck performs in New York on Wednesday
Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images
New York — How rare an event was the small-club show Jeff Beck played here on Wednesday night? Well, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett flew in from his home in Hawaii to catch it. And he wasn't the only weighty player in attendance. Also crowding into the packed-out Iridium, a Broadway jazz club, were E Street Band (and "Sopranos") veteran Steven Van Zandt; onetime Stray Cat Brian Setzer; psychedelic-blues virtuoso Warren Haynes, of Gov't Mule; and such notable Beck buddies as Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer.
They were all on hand to catch the great guitarist in an uncommon context. Beck's fiery, soaring style — which has been unendingly influential ever since he emerged as Eric Clapton's replacement in the Yardbirds in 1965 — makes glorious use of maximum volume.

Who’s the biggest star in the new Hawaii Five-o series coming to CBS this fall: Alex O’Loughlin? Daniel Dae Kim? Maybe Scott Caan? The answer might not even be a human being. A top CBS exec told Variety that marketing efforts will center on a lightly updated version of the original Hawaii Five-o theme song: “We’re going to treat it as a lead character of the show.” The same honcho added that Hawaii Five-o had “the most enduring theme in the history of television.” Hmm…

Paul McCartney and John Lennon have undoubtedly penned some of the most phenomenal songs ever written. How did the "Idols" do with them? Did our Gurl MamaSox do them justice?
momlogic's Vivian: Last night's "American Idol" finally made me feel like all of the contestants are really starting to compete. Taking on the Lennon/McCartney songbook, the "Idols" had a wealth of material with which to maximize their talents. Referring to the songs, Kara said, "They're as meaningful and relevant today as they were when they came out." The challenge was to arrange and perform them in a modern, relevant way.
Aaron Kelly -- who I fondly call "Little Mr. 'Glee,'" and who his brethren artists call "Yoda" -- kicked things off. He balladeered "The Long and Winding Road," and although his voice was fairly consistent, the performance was too straight and came off as lackluster. Ellen even...

There’s a lot of hype surrounding the game but no matter where you might fall in the discussion, you can’t deny that Quantic Dreams has offered PS3 owners an entirely unique gaming experience and that, if nothing else, the game sets a new standard for how players can experience story in a video game. Last night, Spencer Pratt announced on The Tonight Show that he might run for President. His reasoning? It has to do with becoming hated by everyone and hacking computers. Or something. I don't think he's thought it through yet. Seth Green gets a little dig in, and the audience is obviously tired of him and Heidi.
What you don't hear in the clip (it cuts off early) is the audience actually booing Heidi and Spencer. My favorite part of the show was the end, as the music played and credits rolled Conan talked to guest Brian Setzer and Green talked to Andy, leaving Speidi all alone in the middle on the couch, not sure where to look or who to talk to.
