It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re preparing for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited slasher Thanksgiving – which reaches theatres this Friday, November 17th – by looking back at his 2002 feature debut Cabin Fever (watch it Here). To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Roth from a screenplay he wrote with Randy Pearlstein, Cabin Fever has the following synopsis: Bert, a college student vacationing with friends in the mountains, mistakenly shoots a local man with a skin infection while hunting in the woods. Panicking, he abandons the scene and leaves the man for dead. When the man stumbles into a reservoir, he infects the water supply, and soon one of Bert’s friends becomes infected. The friends struggle to stop the contagious, flesh-eating disease while on the run from a group...

When a films starts with a simple narrative explaining the movie or what is about to happen, with the text showing on screen, I always have a quick smile. There’s some classic horror that has started this way and I think I mostly remember it from the begining of The Blair Witch Project. Because of that my hopes are always a little higher when I see this, for some reason I forget the dozens, possibly hundreds of movies that I’ve seen with this opening that haven’t been so great. As you’ve probably guessed, Clinton Road starts this way.
Clinton Road has three fairly well known acting names that star.

Looking to add some scares to your viewing slate this summer? Severin Films has you covered (in blood) with their upcoming May Blu-ray releases that include The Uncanny, the wrestling horror movie Masked Mutilator, and Saint Bernard from writer, director, and makeup effects master Gabe Bartalos:
"This May, Severin Films is unleashing three visionary films that only the strongest viewers will be able to witness without losing their sanity. May 28th brings the long- awaited disc debut of the classic anthology horror The Uncanny, starring Peter Cushing & Ray Milland. May 14th sees the arrival of two brand-new, very different, outsider visions: FX guru Gabe Bartalos’ unhinged St. Bernard breaks down the barriers of good taste and Masked Mutilator splatters the blood of the wrestling ring all over Severin’s sub-label Intervision Picture Corp.
The Uncanny:
In 1977, legendary Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky teamed with Canadian producer Claude Héroux for the anthology shocker CelluloidDiaries.

I don’t like to write negative reviews, so I’ll keep this short and sweet. I realize that Eli Roth is a divisive topic, and that he gets that hipster blood a-boiling, but when I heard they were remaking his film Cabin Fever, I felt a little boil in the blood myself. And this is me we’re talking about here. I’m usually the one defending these remakes from attacks and charges of sexually assaulted childhoods. But goddamn it, this is one of the most unnecessary things I’ve ever seen. Even if you weren’t a fan of the original, you can’t think that a remake of such a recent film is a good idea, especially one that is widely considered to be awesome, and already in the English language. But that’s exactly what they did. I had my suspicions when more information started to trickle in,...

Stars: Jason Trost, Lee Valmassy, Art Hsu, Caitlyn Folley, Nick Principe, Brandon Barrera, James DeBello, Sean Whalen, James Remar | Written by Brandon Trost, Jason Trost | Directed by Brandon Trost, Jason Trost
It seems everyone and their uncle is trying to make instant cult movies these days. Whether they be grindhouse-inspired genre flicks or retro movies that throwback to the heyday of VHS, it seems “cult” is the new cool. However trying to make a cult film and succeeding at making a cult film are two very different things…
Thankfully The Fp falls into the later category, with what can only be described as a mash-up of Escape From New York and Step Up!

Jonathan Craven (son of Wes) and Cody Zwieg - who previously produced The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes remakes - are back with a new thriller entitled Charm, from director Ashley Cahill.
Cahill also stars in ths film alongside Rebecca Dayan, Jennifer Murray, James DeBello and Jake Hoffman.
Kirsten Dunst apparently makes a cameo as well.
Cahill plays Malcolm, a young man whose principle interests are movies, New York, and mass murder. He's a New Yorker who gets tired of how gentrified, tepid and antiseptic it's all become. So, he decides to take matters into his own hands by personally starting a crime wave which he hopes will catch on and drive real estate value down, opening up the city to bohemians, artists and a swell of creativity, just like the supposed good 'ole days of the 1970s and '80s. The only problem is: Nobody is paying attention.

Another filing in this category arrives in the form of writer-director Aaron Metchik’s ’10 Years Later’, a low-budget, character-based thriller of sorts in which a high school reunion goes awry, and ends up with a kidnapping. The movie unwinds in a small town in California, where Josh...

Welcome back to the last installment of Dread Central’s look back at the 25 milestones that shaped the landscape of independent horror filmmaking over the last 100 years. I apologize for the delay on the last five milestones as I had no idea just how busy I’d be while in Austin covering the South by Southwest Film Festival (which also champions the independent spirit of filmmaking most of the time) so I am glad to be back now and have the opportunity to pay homage to these last five moments in indie horror history.
We’ve already celebrated 20 milestones through 1987, and today we start in 1999 with one of the most innovative independent modern horror films that not only acted as a game changer in the horror genre but also was one of the first movies to effectively use the Internet as a marketing tool.

Group of college aged friends staying at a remote cabin are infected by a flesh eating virus.
Cabin Fever does have some good moments. There are moments of laugh out loud humor. There are moments of sickening gore effects. There are moments that are highly stylized. There are moments that recall the horror films of yesteryear. The problem is that Cabin Fever only has moments. It doesn't come together to form a cohesive whole. The film simply doesn't gel. It's too all over the place. Cabin Fever is an indulgent mess of a movie that tries to have it every which way possible mixing elements of retro, slapstick antics, off the wall humor, character study elements, over the top gore and stylized vignettes. There are some innovative ideas and, as said earlier, some good moments.

James DeBello should know to stay out of the woods. Especially after what happened to him in Cabin Fever . Nevertheless, he's back on another camping trip with a new group of friends/victims in Nothing to Fear , a film by Michael Korbic and written by Leonardo Barthel. Fear looks to tread a lot of familiar territory as it tells of an excursion in the woods that leads to the destruction of an archaic statue and doppelgangers. We'll update you when this finds distribution. For now, watch the trailer.

Jimmy Evans is new to the horror world but his first swan dive into film is Tim Sullivan's 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams! That's not too shabby being his first film and the cool way he got involved! Check out the really fun interview we did below and remember 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams will be out on July 20th. Brian S- First off, how did you get involved with 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams?
Jimmy- Well, I've always been a huge fan of horror movies. I used to film my own horror movies in the woods with my cousins all of the time. James DeBello's role as Bert in "Cabin Fever" is kinda what got me into wanting to act. He's the fuckin' man in that movie. I hope to someday play a character just like Bert. And Tim Sullivan is my cousin, and he knew that I've been wanting to work in film.

Chicago – Horror fans heard the buzz surrounding “Cabin Fever” for months before it came out and the film launched Mr. Eli Roth to the “Hostel” films and even a role in the multiple Oscar nominee “Inglourious Basterds”. That film has now been released on Blu-ray to coincide with its straight-to-dvd sequel “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever,” itself directed by an already-acclaimed new horror director, “House of the Devil“‘s Ti West.
“Cabin Fever 2” DVD Rating: 1.0/5.0
“Cabin Fever” Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
“Cabin Fever” undeniably had a twisted, dark sense of humor but West’s “Cabin fever 2” takes it several steps further, practically pitching his sequel as a comedic spoof of ’80s teen horror flicks. He moves the action to a high school and keeps the flesh-eating action in place, but his tone is severely tongue-in-cheek from the animated opening credits to exaggerated faculty members to the appearances by over-the-top personalities like Mark Borchardt,...

The work of Eli Roth provides something of an interesting litmus test. His horror films are regularly out-grossed by his Saw competitors, a fact which is reflected by the general popular appraisal of his films (the first Hostel has a 5.7 rating on IMDb.com, whereas the first Saw has a 7.7). On the other hand, the man has garnered an auspicious group of industry fans (which includes Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, John Landis, and Robert Rodriguez), whom are all too happy to continue to fund and support his work. For better or worse, Roth’s career began with Cabin Fever, and he has not deviated from the trajectory that it set him on since. While the film showcases everything that makes him a technically proficient director, it also shows with gale force everything that makes him unpalatable to a larger audience.

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.
First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.
Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.
But, Up In the Air...

This week at the movies, we've got a fractured family (Everybody's Fine, starring Robert De Niro and Drew Barrymore); a sibling rivalry (Brothers, starring Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal); an inside job (Armored, starring Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne); and vampire hilarity (Transylmania, starring Patrick Cavanaugh and James DeBello). What do the critics have to say? Sometimes a film contains such good acting that one is willing to overlook its other faults. One example might be Jim Sheridan's Brothers, a film critics say often works despite being frequently overwrought. Robert De Niro has an intensity and presence that shines through...

We brought you an earlier look at a trailer for Full Circle Releasing’s upcoming horror/comedy Transylmania which while funny, wasn’t able to show you everything you might want to see about this movie. Fortunately, we can remedy that problem right now by bringing you this new Redband trailer for the film which is able to show a lot more of the “flavor” you can expect.
In case this is your first experience with Transylmania, it tells the story of a motley group of college students who embark on “the wildest, sexiest, most outrageous semester abroad ever” at Razvan University. Of course, in true horror/comedy style, the campus isn’t located in a plush, beautiful paradise but instead, deep in the heart of Transylvania in a centuries-old castle.

Pre-production has begun on Go Straight to Hell , not to be confused with Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell . When I was first alerted to this title I thought, immediately, "Oh, it must be an Asylum production." Not the case, no sir. The film, written by Scott Sanford and Ron Anand, is a Pristine Pictures-produced effort directed by Edward Norris. His credits include Death-Defying Acts and Coup de Grace , both starring Debbie Rochon. For Go Straight to Hell he has pulled together Traci Lords, Sid Haig, Karen Black, Laura Harring, Amanda Plummer, Courtney Gains and James DeBello. Adopting the anthology film format, it tells of four recently deceased souls trapped in Purgatory and awaiting a sin cleansing so that they may enter Heaven. They have been gathered to...

Director/VFX Supervisor Gary Jones (Mosquito, Spiders) dropped me an email about Ghouls, his new film premiering on the Sci-Fi Channel this weekend. Sci-Fi must really be high on the film since I've seen ads hyping it as not just an original movie premiering, but as an "event".
Ghouls tells the tale of a college student (Kristen Renton, "Days of Our Lives") returning with her father (William Atherton, Die Hard, Ghostbusters) to his home country only to discover her family holds a dark secret that involves her.
It also involves some spectral ghouls that fly around attacking people, not all that dissimilar to the Dementors from the Harry Potter films, though I suspect the aftermath of one of their attacks is far more unpleasant.
Also starring in the Romanian-filmed fright flick from writer Brian D. Young (Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep) are James DeBello (Cabin Fever, Detroit Rock City) and...
