David Lynch and Mark Frost’s iconic “Twin Peaks” surreal series had to be pulled back down to earth by network executives, especially when it came to providing a resolution for the central mystery.
The beloved series aired on ABC from April 1990 to June 1991; the show was later resurrected by Showtime with 2017’s “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Prequel film “Fire Walk With Me” centered around the events prior to “Twin Peaks,” which opens with high school character Laura Palmer’s murder.
According to co-creator Frost, ABC threatened to “stop sending us money” for production if Season 2 did not provide some resolution to Laura Palmer’s killing. Frost told Variety that Lynch would ideally have preferred for the mystery to “go on forever.”
“We literally had a gun to our head from the network,” Frost said. “As I recall, they were just going to stop sending us money if we didn’t deliver this.

Ben Grimm is mad. The ace pilot would do almost anything for his college pal Dr. Reed Richards, the super-genius who has designed an experimental rocket. But Ben worries about cosmic rays surrounding the planet and threatens to drop out of the project.
“Ben, we’ve got to take that chance,” interjects friend Sue Storm. “Unless we want the Commies to beat us to it.”
With that Ben takes up the mission. Because if there’s one thing that Benjamin J. Grimm hates, its Commies. Well, at least that’s what Ben hated in the 1960s. And so he joins Reed, Sue, and Sue’s brother Johnny on a trip into space, a trip that will expose them to cosmic rays, transforming Ben into the Thing, Reed into Mr. Fantastic, Sue into Invisible Girl, and Johnny into the Human Torch. Together, they will form the Fantastic Four.

Godzilla Minus One has surpassed 2016’s Shin Godzilla at the global box office, making it the biggest entry in Toho’s blockbuster series of films.
What great news to start the year with. Godzilla Minus One (which we were big fans of) is now the biggest Godzilla film of all time.
As Dark Horizons reports, Godzilla Minus One’s impressive $78 million haul at the global box office puts it ahead of Shin Godzilla, which made $76 million back in 2016. Godzilla Minus One had a reported budget of only $15 million, making the achievement even more impressive.
In the US, Godzilla Minus One holds the most successful opening of any Japanese film ever. It also overtook Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth as the sixth highest grossing foreign film ever in the country. We can’t imagine Guillermo is too upset though – he seems to love the film.

A new decade began at the end of the 80s. The television landscape was beginning to change somewhat. The big three were nervous about a new network called Fox that, with an animated show of all things called The Simpsons, would manage to beat them in the ratings.
ABC decided to gamble on something completely different in comparison to anything else on the television landscape at that time with David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. This was the first glimpse that viewers would have into the misty and surreal town of Twin Peaks, a dream world created by David Lynch and Mark Frost which would become an obsession to viewers and would continue to be over the years to come.

In every single aspect that matters, Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2 is to the original Alan Wake what Twin Peaks: The Return was to the first two seasons of Twin Peaks. Hell, in a wild twist, the first Alan Wake had the eponymous author penning a new novel called Return long before the third season of Mark Frost and David Lynch’s iconic television series was even announced, let alone titled. What they also have in common is a certain artistic ethos—the feeling that beyond being sequels to extraordinarily weird cult pieces of pop art, Alan Wake 2 and The Return are the sum total of lessons learned over time by their creators.

MacLachlan shared a photo that featured himself alongside Laurie, Joan Chen and Michael Ontkean.
Laurie starred as Catherine Martell in the David Lynch and Mark Frost series in all the episodes from the original run. Piper Laurie, the actress who captivated audiences as Catherine Martell in "Twin Peaks" and terrified them as Margaret White in "Carrie," has died. The Hollywood Reporter has just confirmed that the actor passed away this morning at the age of 91.
The three-time Oscar nominee began her acting career during high school, signing a contract with Universal in 1949 and starring opposite Ronald Reagan in her on-screen debut, "Louisa." From there, the actress began working steadily, starring opposite Tony Curtis several times and appearing in 14 Universal movies (typically in the starring role) in just 7 years. Eventually, as THR notes, Laurie desperately wanted out of her contract, and her agent was able to extricate her from a deal that was keeping truly challenging roles at arm's length.
After leaving Universal, Laurie made one of the most memorable moves in her career with her turn in "The Hustler," an acclaimed movie about a pool...

With a show like “Yellowjackets,” where the mysteries are everything, you can’t reveal too much too soon. Twin Peaks is considered a cult classic TV show. Years after it went off the air, millions of people still watch the two original seasons, a spinoff movie, and a limited revival series. However, one proposed spinoff didn’t make the cut as a Twin Peaks series. But did end up becoming the hit movie Mulholland Drive.

It’s been two years since the last season of ITV’s hit crime drama Unforgotten, and at long last it’s back on our screens.

In this latest series, when a body is found in a boarded-up fireplace, the team gets to work trying to identify who the victim is, and how long they’ve been there. While Twin Peaks: The Return, Showtime’s 2017 revival of the 1990 – ’91 David Lynch / Mark Frost television series Twin Peaks, was officially referred to as “an 18 hour event series”, Lynch (who directed the entire event himself) has said that he sees it as an 18 hour movie. And the folks at Sight and Sound clearly agree with him, because Twin Peaks: The Return has just found its way onto their list of the greatest films of all time. Where one of the other entries in the top 250 happens to be Lynch’s 1992 theatrical release Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Atlanta, the Georgian city surrounded by forest, is a singularly surreal place, but it's not quite as strange as the version of it that exists in Donald Glover's FX series, "Atlanta." The series ran for four seasons and followed a group of young Black people in the titular city as they tried to not just survive, but actually thrive. The absurd adventures of Earn (Glover), his cousin Alfred/"Paper Boi" (Brian Tyree Henry), Al's best friend Darius (Lakeith Stanfield), and Earn's on-again-off-again girlfriend and baby mama Van (Zazie Beetz) exist in a world that's just tangential to ours, where magic is potentially real and even the strangest things could actually happen. There is definitely a quality to the series that's reminiscent of being high, even in the horror episodes, with reality just beyond everyone's grasp. Glover once said that he was trying to make "Atlanta" "'Twin Peaks' for rappers,...

It deeply saddens me that Angelo Badalamenti, the composer behind "Blue Velvet," "Lost Highway," and "Mulholland Drive," has passed away at the age of 85. Badalamenti is to David Lynch what John Williams is to Steven Spielberg; they've each worked with other high-profile artists in their career, but their success is notably intertwined. The surrealistic temperment of Lynch's work feels oddly incomplete without Badalamenti's touch. When you start an episode of "Twin Peaks," the opening theme is the first thing you hear. Its soft melody, which crescendos into a triumphant upswing, makes the mountainside town feel like home.
With the diverse soundscape of Badalamenti, Lynch and series co-creator Mark Frost transported network television viewers into a mystery that was as charming as it was haunting. The series came to me at a critical point in my life, where I felt as if I were trapped in the same limbo as...

The further we get away from the premiere of its pilot, the harder it is to understand how David Lynch and Mark Frost's "Twin Peaks" briefly seized the imaginations of American television viewers. On April 8, 1990, the 90-minute pilot scored what would be the highest single movie rating of the 1989-90 network season. Throughout that month, the show found its way onto the cover of just about every major mainstream magazine, regardless of the periodical's emphasis. People who would've run screaming from Lynch's "Blue Velvet" were enthralled by the series' central "Who Killed Laura Palmer" mystery. They fell in love with Kyle MacLachlan's charmingly idiosyncratic FBI Agent Dale Cooper and Sherilyn Fenn's high school hellion Audrey Horne. They threw viewing parties with coffee, donuts and pie.

Composer Angelo Badalamenti has died, leaving behind a musical legacy that spanned ’80s slashers, holiday season slapstick, and, of course, his long running creative partnership with director David Lynch. In memory of the man who collaborated with a Beatle and Bowie and was responsible for so much of the unmistakable mood of the Lynch filmography, the IndieWire staff picked five of the film and TV compositions that will forever transport us to a place where the birds sing a pretty song, and there’s always music in the air.
“Blue Velvet,” “Main Title” (1986)
The first collaboration between Badalamenti and Lynch, “Blue Velvet” boasts a main title that sees the late composer wryly hinting at the devilish duplicity of Jeffrey Beaumont’s (Kyle MacLachlan) descent into a suburban underworld with characteristic brilliance.

Kyle MacLachlan is remembering his “Twin Peaks” co-star Al Strobel, who passed away at the age of 83 on December 2.
Strobel famously played Phillip Gerard, aka the “one-armed man,” on the series co-created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The David Lynch and Mark Frost series Twin Peaks made its premiere on ABC in 1990 and ran for two seasons before being cancelled. It was followed by the feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, and a couple decades later the series was revived for a third season on Showtime, called Twin Peaks: The Return. While we anxiously wait to see if Lynch and Frost are going to bring us any more stories set in the world of Twin Peaks, the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida gathered several of the show’s cast members together for a reunion that stirred up all the feels.
Cast member Mädchen Amick shared a picture to Instagram that shows her enjoying a dinner with fellow cast members Dana Ashbrook, Sherilyn Fenn, Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, and Kimmy Robertson.

Few televised images were more indelible in the early 1990s -- and even still today -- than that of Sheryl Lee's Laura Palmer wrapped in plastic. In the years since the series' original release, the pilot episode snapshot of the near-angelic, blue-tinged face of the dead girl at the center of "Twin Peaks" has become as ubiquitous as the school photo of the troubled teen that emblazons T-shirts and posters asking, "Who killed Laura Palmer?"
It's also an image that feels like a starting point: the Athena figure that sprung fully formed from David Lynch and Mark Frost's minds, yet didn't reveal her full self to either us or her makers until far, far later. As Willow Maclay writes in the essay "Northern Star: On Twin Peaks, Sheryl Lee, and Laura Palmer," the series' protagonist, agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), became "a manifestation of David Lynch's obsession of...

David Lynch is a director who has always, in a way, been ahead of the curve. His vision throughout both his film and television projects is uncompromising, and even those that had received mixed reception during their release are often warmly regarded today (at least by Lynch fans).
Perhaps the most drastically re-evaluated Lynch film is "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me." The prequel film to his and Mark Frost's seminal series "Twin Peaks" was a critical and commercial flop upon release, with many criticizing its drastic tonal shift and bizarre imagery. What many people didn't realize at the time, however, is that "Fire Walk With Me" was perhaps the best example of Lynch's creative influences in action. The crumbling American Dream, the dissolution of the nuclear family, and the overall absurdity of societal pressures all play integral parts in this prequel.

When David Lynch's "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" debuted in theaters in 1992, audiences and critics were pretty unimpressed. The ABC series "Twin Peaks," created by Lynch and Mark Frost, was often pretty strange and occasionally a little scary, but it was also very funny. The film is close to humorless, with only a brief comedic scene with Lynch himself in the beginning, and then it's a harrowing nightmare of sexual violence, incest, drug abuse, and murder. "Fire Walk With Me" is a dirge for Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), who spent the duration of the series already dead.
"Twin Peaks" asked audiences to figure out who killed Laura Palmer, but "Fire Walk With Me" asked audiences to see who Laura Palmer really was. Instead of learning about her through the memories of those who knew her, the audience is given a chance to know her intimately during her final week alive.

After terrorizing the Dutch with a living elevator, a canal-dwelling slasher, and an evil Sinterklaas, rebellious filmmaker Dick Maas returned with a more natural kind of killer. The people of Amsterdam are not under attack by a mere animal; a displaced predator is on the prowl. The blood trail of Prooi (Prey) starts outside the city where a family is brutally slaughtered in the middle of the night. It doesn’t take more than a glimpse of the massacre before a local zoo veterinarian determines the culprit. A lion is on the loose, and it’s heading deeper and deeper into the concrete jungle.
When the Netherlands said they can’t compete with Hollywood movies, Maas set out to prove them wrong. And since then, the audacious auteur has succeeded — his brand of absurd and entertaining filmmaking is enjoyed by not only the Dutch but also the rest of the world.

The opening act of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is easily misread as cynical. Its first shot, a metal bat shattering a television screen, violently severs the world of Twin Peaks from the medium that originally housed it—one that, by the end of an initial 30-episode run, had curbed the vision of creators David Lynch and Mark Frost considerably. And the half-hour of material that follows is, pointedly, everything Twin Peaks isn’t. We’re in the company of two unfamiliar FBI agents, Chester Desmond (Chris Isaak) and Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland), investigating the murder of an unfamiliar girl, Teresa Banks (Pamela Gidley), in an unfamiliar town, Deer Meadow. The denizens of Deer Meadow are ornery and dismissive. Desmond and Stanley, though not lacking charm, are a far cry from the buoyantly charismatic Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), whose presence throughout is minimal.

1990 was a perfectly fine year for horror: "Jacob's Ladder" twisted our minds, "Childs Play 2" proved Chucky was more than a trend, and "Tremors" and "Arachnophobia" brought horror-comedy back on the scene in a big way. But for my money, nothing on screen in 1990 was scarier than meeting Bob.
The dream-like devil at the center of David Lynch and Mark Frost's "Twin Peaks," Bob (Frank Silva) slunk his way on screen and into our nightmares in the show's pilot episode. Season 1 of David Lynch and Mark Frost's surreal mystery-horror series "Twin Peaks" remains unparalleled for many reasons — the tangible characterization of Twin Peaks as a town, the image of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) dead and wrapped in plastic, and the steady presence of Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) that brought us joy. However, season 2 of "Twin Peaks" went a very different direction after the heart-thumping reveal of Laura's murderer. We're talking goofy subplots, the frankly terrifying "Just You and I" sing-along, and the whole Windom Earle arc -- basically all the parts season 2 could have done without.

In a 2016 BBC poll, over 175 film critics from around the world voted David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" the greatest movie of the 21st century thus far. However, Lynch's surreal neo-noir thriller, an American dream turned L.A. nightmare, famously began life as a TV project. He shot much of it as the pilot for a potential television series, and it was only after the network, ABC, passed on it that he re-developed it as a standalone story for the big screen. Yet there was another stage even before that where "Mulholland Drive" could have been a spin-off of the show "Twin Peaks."

David Lynch has joined the cast of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming drama “The Fabelmans,” Variety has learned. His role remains a closely guarded secret.
“The Fabelmans” will mark the first collaboration between Lynch and Spielberg, both seminal directorial talents that emerged in the 1970’s. Lynch has accumulated a celebrated body of work over the course of his filmmaking career, drawing acclaim for directing films such as “Mulholland Drive,” “Eraserhead,” “Blue Velvet,” “The Straight Story” and “Lost Highway.” His 1980 historical drama “The Elephant Man” received eight Oscar nominations, including one for Lynch’s directing, while his crime romance “Wild at Heart” won the Palme d’Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. The many breadcrumbs David Lynch has been dropping about an upcoming major project has now led to some tangible information about what we can expect from the auteur. With it now being three years since his masterful return to Twin Peaks, he’s finally gearing up to shoot a new project.
Way back in February, a Reddit user dropped the rumor that Lynch was developing a project for Netflix with the working title of Wisteria. Said to be either 25 hour-long episodes or 13 mini-movies, it reportedly carried a $85 million budget with 200-day production taking place in Los Angeles. While the pandemic clearly halted any such plans, we’ve been waiting for a more reliable source before reporting, and such news has now arrived.
According to Production Weekly (via Welcome to Twin Peaks), Lynch will begin shooting Wisteria this May at Calvert Studios, returning after shooting some of Twin Peaks: The Return there.

On November 24, 1971, a man calling himself Dan Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines flight 305 from Portland to Seattle (a trip known as a “milk run” due to the short distance involved). A few minutes into the voyage, he got the attention of a flight attendant and made it known that he had a bomb that he intended to use unless his demands were met. What did he want? $200,000 in unmarked bills and four parachutes.
After the plane was on the ground in Seattle, the passengers were let go, the plane was refueled, and Cooper was granted his money and chutes. He instructed the pilot to head towards Mexico City, making it clear that the wing flaps were to remain at 15 degrees and landing gear to stay deployed, the cabin remain depressurized, and that the craft was not to exceed an altitude of 10,000 feet.

What we thought was going to be an eternal mystery—what would Mark Frost and David Lynch have done with their creation if Twin Peaks had lasted longer than two seasons—was solved when Showtime brought the cult-classic drama and most of the original cast back for a third season in 2017. Yet nothing will ever quite compare to how it all started 30 years ago, on April 8, 1990, when Twin Peaks' two-hour pilot premiered on ABC, posing the infamous question: Who killed Laura Palmer? It wasn't easy to convince the network to put the decidedly different drama on the air at all, but the response, when it did, was fairly rapturous. The eight-episode first season was promptly nominated for 14...

"Amazing how one lion can stop an entire city." 4 Digital Media has released a new Us trailer for a horror B-movie titled Uncaged, which is the official Us title for a movie also known as Prey (or Prooi in Dutch). This already opened in The Netherlands in 2016, but has never had a Us release - until now. It's heading to VOD in March, if anyone wants to catch it.
