Universal and Mrc have released the official trailer for Mortal Engines, the post-apocalyptic thriller based Philip Reeve’s award-winning Scholastic book series. This is a project Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have been working on for years, bringing their Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit cohort Philippa Boyens aboard to co-write the script and tapping Jackson’s longtime VFX partner Christian Rivers (an Oscar winner for King Kong) to direct in his feature helming debut.

Universal has released a unique first trailer for “Mortal Engines,” depicting a world of predator cities existing thousands of years after current civilization has been destroyed by a cataclysmic event.
“We have to stop London before it destroys us” is one of the lines in the FX-heavy footage, released Tuesday.
Peter Jackson is on board as a producer and screenwriter, re-teaming with “Hobbit” screenwriters with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens in “Mortal Engines,” set in a steampunk world where entire cities have been mounted on wheels and prey on one another. It’s Jackson’s first feature project since the completion of the Hobbit trilogy in 2014.
Robert Sheehan stars as museum apprentice Tom Natsworthy from the city of London who finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive assassin Hester Shaw, played by Hera Hilmar, who’s out to avenge the death of her mother.

Universal has released the first teaser trailer for Peter Jackson‘s new project, ‘Mortal Engines’. Although you might think otherwise from the way that the trailer presents the film, Jackson does not direct. Instead, the ‘Lord of the Rings‘ helmer serves as writer and producer for the upcoming fantasy epic, while Christian Rivers sits in the director’s chair for his first feature outing. Rivers has had a long working relationship with Jackson, as Rivers worked as a 2nd unit director and special effects artist on the ‘Lotr’ trilogy.
From the book of the same name, written by Philip Reeve, the story takes place in a futuristic wasteland where giant, mobilized cities constantly roam the globe. Although the trailer doesn’t give us much by way of story (it’s a teaser after all), this world does seem like a fun sandbox to play in from the onset. I’m certainly intrigued,...

Peter Jackson’s great journey there and back again with J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy tales comes to an action-filled and excellent end in The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies, as I say in my video review above.
This one features, of course, series regulars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Lee Pace, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Richard Armitage, Christopher Lee and Evangeline Lilly. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the acquisitive and vengeful dragon Smaug.
Jackson, who has been creating movies based on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books for more than 15 years now, co-wrote the script with his usual collaborators Philippa Boyens and wife Fran Walsh, along with Guillermo Del Toro. Jackson, Walsh, Carolynne Cunningham and Zane Weiner produced. The film, which is being distributed by Warner Bros., opens today in the United States following strong overnight previews in the United States and a huge overseas bow last weekend,...

Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema jointly announced on Friday that the much-anticipated final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, has now been titled The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.
The film, previously titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” will be released worldwide December 17, 2014, with select international territories releasing on December 10, 2014.
Peter Jackson stated, “Our journey to make ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two-film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. We all knew it was coming. Some, such as myself, deliberately held off getting the original release because we were waiting for this one. The extended editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy were and are some of the greatest DVD releases of all time. The packaging, the menu layouts, the documentaries…all top notch. With that extremely high bar…I unfortunately found myself being a little disappointed with the packaging on this extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

It’s an improvement over the first release for sure but…I suppose I was hoping for something that would match up a little better with Lotr on the shelf. Mind you, I suppose there are different studios producing these films so…who knows.

Let’s just start with the bad news and get it out of the way. Since the third movie was first announced back at the end of July 2012, we’ve been telling you about the Hobbit trilogy. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hit theaters on December 14, 2012. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released Dec. 13, 2013; the third installment in the series, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will hit theaters July 18, 2014.
Well, not so much any more, as far as that last bit goes. Deadline broke the news that the third movie has been pushed out a bit. New premiere date: December 17, 2014. Sorry, friends.
So let’s move quickly on to the good news: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be out on Blu-ray and DVD this month! March 19, in fact! And if you get yours home before March 24, you will get the access code to see a live...

Over the past two days The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences listed both the score and song from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as eligible for nominations in both the Best Score and Best Original Song categories for the 85th Academy Awards in February. I can’t even begin to fathom any of the movies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy without the soaring soulful works of Howard Shore. It undoubtedly stands as his most towering achievement to date. He won three Academy Awards® for his music for those films, two for Best Original Score, and one for Best Original Song. Shore has also won numerous other honors for his film work, including four Grammys and three Golden Globe Awards.
WaterTower Music has released The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Original Motion Picture Soundtrack today and once again composer Shore’s score is a triumph.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the Wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 Dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild, through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs,...

Because. They. Can. We can come up with dozens of reasons why theater owners would want us to literally move in to their places of business the weekend before the big premiere, but we think the first one covers the rest. Yes, advance tickets for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey go on sale tomorrow at noon, but so do tickets for the extended cuts marathon of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which will screen on December 7 and 8, the weekend before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiere.
And of course, there’s the question of which version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to see when it premieres the following weekend – IMAX? Hfr 3D? Standard 2D? How about all of them, you know, for comparison’s sake?
So find the most comfortable theater, with the best supply of Milk Duds, and get ready to settle in for two weekends in Middle-earth.
