Part of why Michael Jackson‘s “Man in the Mirror” is so powerful is that the King of Pop had an incredible singing voice. Despite that, he was trying to sound like another 1980s singer. That singer revealed what she thought when she learned Jackson was trying so hard to sound like her.
The writer of Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ tells her story
Siedah Garrett co-wrote “Man in the Mirror,” which might be Jackson’s most famous ballad. During an interview with Blue Railroad, Garrett said that Jackson wanted to sound like Garrett when he recorded the song. “That was such a high compliment,” Garrett said. “We’d finished the part we had to fix on the duet so I was getting ready to leave. I was packing up and he said, ‘Where you goin?’ I said, ‘Aren’t we done? Isn’t this history, dude?’

Michael Jackson‘s “Man in the Mirror” is the rare pop song with a great message — a message Jesus Christ might have liked. In fact, the song seems like a paraphrase of one of the most famous passages from the gospels. Here’s a look at the spiritual dimensions of one of Jackson’s best ballads.
Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ is like the Sermon on the Mount
Some of Jesus Christ’s most famous teachings are in his Sermon on the Mount. Some of these statements are certainly challenging! “Do not judge, or you too will be judged,” Jesus says in Matthew 7. “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?...

“As we investigated the story, the bones of the story itself, what we discovered was that it was ready made for the stage,” explains Glen Ballard of “Back to the Future: The Musical.” The famed songwriter collaborated with composer Alan Silvestri to bring one of the most beloved movies of the 1980s to the stage. The road to Broadway was long, but full of creative potential. “We thought it was a delicious opportunity,” admits Ballard. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The project came with many appealing assets, with perhaps the most important one being Silvestri’s iconic score to the film. The duo transformed the films’ title theme into a catchy opening number, appropriately called “It’s Only a Matter of Time.” A new set of lyrics that introduce the audience to Marty McFly (Casey Likes) fits neatly into the infamous melody line. “I think one of the first...

“Women’s Month continues with Sinéad O’Connor, an Irish singer, songwriter, and activist with a passion for ‘90z grunge fashion,” a post by Bratz on Instagram read. “O’Connor, who passed away in 2023, first debuted her scorchin’ buzzcut in 1987 when she was just 20 years old — two years after she signed her record deal. In 2017, I ended my marriage of almost 12 years. It wasn’t one big betrayal. No one was a villain, not really. Taylor Swift’s historic fourth Album of the Year win
After Taylor Swift’s Album of the Year win for “Midnights,” Noah claimed she was the first person to win Album of the Year four times. That is not exactly correct — engineers Tom Coyne, Serban Ghenea, and John Hanes had won four times before “Midnights” — but Swift is indeed the first woman and first performer to win this many times, following her victories for “Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore.” This historic win is a testament to Swift’s ability to make consistently successful albums,...

“This is my 13th Grammy,” Swift said when accepting the award, acknowledging her proclaimed lucky number. “I want to say thank you to the members of the Recording Academy for voting this way, but I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans. Antonoff had the honor of presenting the Exceptional Ears Award to Sisk, a three-time Grammy winner who has also worked with Lana Del Rey, Lorde, St. Vincent and Florence + the Machine.
Antonoff kicked off his tribute by detailing that he’s known Sisk for more than a decade. “She’s absolutely fucking incredible,” said Antonoff, one of two speakers from the podium who noted how loudly distracting the event’s kitchen staff was during the program. “I met Laura 12 or 13 years ago,...

This past week saw the release of The Book of Clarence, a movie about a down-on-his-luck guy who hits upon a get-rich-quick scheme that leads him into a heap of trouble. It’s a classic topic for a movie, but it is treading on more controversial ground than usual. Because in the case of this story about a hustler getting in over his head, the hustle happens to be set around Israel and Palestine during the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth. In fact, that is Clarence’s whole scheme: He sees Jesus and decides to get into the messiah business.
This is not the first film to portray the story of one of Jesus’ fictional contemporaries. Monty Python’s Life of Brian attracted protests, controversy, and endless talk show guest slots over its portrayal of a man who was definitely not the messiah, just a very naughty boy.

Alanis Morissette appeared on a recent episode of PBS’ Finding Your Roots, during which the singer discovered that her great-uncles, Gyorgy and Sandor Feuerstein, died in the Holocaust.
Morissette already knew that her Hungarian Jewish grandfather, Imre Feuerstein, miraculously survived the Holocaust before relocating his family — including Morissette’s then-six-year-old mother — from the Soviet Union to Ontario, Canada in 1953. They decided to keep their Jewish heritage a secret from then on, so the “Ironic” singer had no idea she was Jewish until she was 28.
“I think there was a terror that is in their bones, and they were being protective of us and not wanting antisemitism,” Morissette said of the Feuersteins. “They were protecting us, keeping us in the dark around it.”

Gates Jr. hosts Finding Your Roots, which sees celebrity guests presented with a “book of life” compiled with information about their ancestral histories, familial connections, and secrets about their lineage, all researched by professional genealogists. Talking to Today‘s Roker, Craig Melvin, and Sheinelle Jones about the tenth season, which premiered Tuesday, January 2, on PBS, Gates Jr. was asked if he had any dream guests for the show. Without hesitation, the historian turned to Roker and put him on blast. “Um. Let me see. Al Roker!” he said. “I have begged him. Alanis Morissette was a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Friday (December 15th), where the self-proclaimed Wham! superfan performed her own take on “Last Christmas.”
Morissette recorded a cover of “Last Christmas” for her new holiday-themed EP of the same name, which also features “Little Drummer Boy,” “What Child Is This,” and “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).” For her Wham! tribute on Fallon, she stayed faithful to George Michael’s 1984 original, her distinct mezzo-soprano seamlessly fitting into its melody.
Morissette also sat down for an interview with Fallon, where the pair discussed her upcoming “The Triple Moon Tour” with Joan Jett, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a speech from Olivia Rodrigo, and a questionable impression of Morissette that Fallon performed on SNL many years ago. Watch it all below.
