"Raging Bull" knocked audiences flat on their backs when it premiered over four decades ago. The boxing biography, which is still considered among director Martin Scorsese's best films, unfolds as a rags-to-riches-to-rags story about a brutal middleweight fighter whose personal life never quite matches up to his success in the ring. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Cathy Moriarty headlined the film's wildly talented ensemble, while late "Cheers" star Tommy Como played a local mobster and actress Theresa Saldana, who passed away in 2016, played protagonist Jake's second wife Lenora.
While time has taken some of these talented actors away from us, and the real Jake Lamotta died in 2017, each member of the "Raging Bull" core trio is still acting today. To present a "where are they now" about an actor as famous and prolific as De Niro would be silly, but if you're looking for another great De Niro...

1996 was a dark year for The Italian Stallion. Sylvester Stallone had two pricey flops in 1995, with Judge Dredd and Assassins. His Christmas of 1996 disaster movie release, Daylight, was another box office bomb. Just a few years before, Stallone had made a significant comeback with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but now the whole industry was changing. Carolco, the company that financed some of the era’s biggest hits, had gone bankrupt, and action movies were getting smaller and smaller. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on the decline, with Eraser a smaller hit than usual. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were only a few years away from making direct-to-video movies. What was Sly to do? The result is one of his very best movies –Cop Land – as we explore in the episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited.

While we await official confirmation that Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon will indeed bow at the Cannes Film Festival, it’s not the only film from the director getting a release this year. Showtime will hopefully date his documentary Personality Crisis: One Night Only soon, and now one of his most beloved classics has received a 4K restoration and is returning to theaters next month.
Supervised by Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker, the new restoration of their 1980 drama Raging Bull, starring Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, and Joe Pesci, was created in 4K resolution on a Lasergraphics Director film scanner from the 35mm original camera negative. The original 2.0 surround soundtrack was remastered from the 35mm three-track magnetic track. Ahead of an April 14 release at Film Forum, a new trailer has now arrived.
As for Killers of the Flower Moon, costume designer Jacqueline West talked about her experience with Deadline.

One of the first things that come to mind about James Mangold's 1997 crime drama "Cop Land" is its stacked cast — and how some of them played against type. Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro were just the tip of the macho iceberg in a who's-who ensemble of stars and familiar character actors. There was also Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, and Malik Yoba -- the list goes on and on. Even smaller roles utilized notable Martin Scorsese alumni like Cathy Moriarty and Frank Vincent, and future "The Sopranos" stars Edie Falco and Tony Sirico (the latter of whom only appears in a surveillance photo). This was the movie that put "Rocky" and "Raging Bull" in the ring together and had Stallone gain 40 pounds to play a half-deaf sheriff in a New Jersey town populated by corrupt cops.

In Damien Chazelle's youth, his aspirations flip-flopped from filmmaking to jazz drumming and back again. He combined his two passions for his debut "Whiplash," a short he turned into a feature. Chazelle's story follows Andrew Neimen (Miles Teller), a drumming student determined to be one of the greats. First, Andrew has to survive the tutelage of Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), who's basically Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) from "Full Metal Jacket" if he taught at a conservatory instead of a boot camp.
One film which Chazelle cited as an influence was Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull." Scorsese's muse Robert De Niro played Jake La Motta, the real-life "Bronx Bull" and championship boxer. As Jake picks up more and more notches on his boxing record, his personal struggles only grow.

Coined by the film historian and critic B. Ruby Rich in 1992 to give voice to the explosion in queer film she was witnessing on the burgeoning film festival circuit, the New Queer Cinema’s influence on independent film cannot be overstated. The ‘80s saw films like Jim Jarmusch’s “Stranger Than Paradise” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” explode the idea of what film could be, in turn inspiring a new generation of radical queer filmmakers to pick up the camera and crack the whole thing wide open.

The first thing to say is that Lionsgate has packed a great transfer into this new Blu-ray release. The source material has been rendered with fine detail, low grain, and vibrant colours. This is good news because, as its cult fan base will know, But I’m a Cheerleader is a film of pinks, greens and blues. Fans can also enjoy a small selection of special features, including a cast reunion film and a ‘making of’ feature. “I haven’t seen that in years!” will be the sentiment of most people who buy this, but what about newcomers? Well, it depends on their age, because Jamie Babbit’s film is a teen comedy that caters almost exclusively to its target audience.

The Tribeca Festival wrapped Sunday night, its last event a retrospective screening of Raging Bull with a video (pre-recorded) of Leonardo DiCaprio interviewing Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro about the iconic 1980 film. The director called it, “the culmination of everything I had desired it to be.”
“I didn’t care what happened to it, or if I made another movie,” Scorsese said. He did, including with De Niro. The duo has a 50-plus year collaboration running from Mean Streets and Taxi Driver in the 1970s to The Irishman for Netflix in 2019 and Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon, currently in production.
“There is a trust there that was carried over and lasted,” Scorsese said.
The video was taped recently before cast and crew on the Oklahoma set of Killers of the Flower Moon. Scorsese is directing, DiCaprio and De Niro starring in the film, which depicts the 1920s...

To mark the release of But I’m a Cheerleader on 21st June, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
This whimsically edgy comedy follows teenager Megan, whose suburban existence, filled with friends, cheerleading, and all-American fun, is upended when her straight-laced parents suspect she may be a lesbian. In a panic, they send her to True Directions, a ‘rehabilitation’ camp run by the strict and prudish Mary, to mount an intervention led by counselor Mike. Megan dutifully follows the program — until she develops feelings for another camper…
Blending 90s rom-com charm with the sharp satire of an 80s John Waters’ comedy, But I’m a Cheerleader is a timeless, hilarious and candy-coloured tale of acceptance and love that’s as relevant now as it was on its release, restored in 4K for this brand new director’s cut.
Please note: This competition is open to UK residents only...

The Brad Furman-directed crime thriller City of Lies has had quite a journey, but the Saban Films release finally hits theaters today before dropping on digital and on demand April 9.
Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan and adapted by Christian Contreras, City of Lies follows the investigation into the infamous murder of iconic rap artist Christopher Wallace aka the hip hop legend Notorious B.I.G.
Oscar and Emmy winner Forest Whitaker stars as Jack Jackson, a journalist who teams up with LAPD detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp), who spent nearly 20 years trying to solve the murder. The two of them try to find the truth. They explore why the case remains cold — and why a secret division of the LAPD is seemingly set on keeping it that way.
It’s not a lie that City of Lies went through a lot to make its way to the theaters.

The first time director Jamie Babbit heard the song “Both Sides Now” on the radio, it immediately felt familiar.
She realized she knew the song, not from Joni Mitchell’s expansive library of hits, but because it had been sung at the drug and rehab center her mom ran in Ohio, with different lyrics meant to amplify the perils of addiction.
The revamped lyrics went: “I’ve looked at drugs from both sides now. And still somehow it’s drug delusions. I recall, I really don’t like drugs at all.”
“Growing up, I always thought, ‘Wow, that’s a fun song.’ I didn’t think about the lyrics. But obviously my mom was singing it because it was a drug rehab song,” Babbit recently recalled in an interview with Variety. “And then I heard the Joni Mitchell song on the radio and it had totally different lyrics. But obviously my mom was singing it because it was a drug rehab song,” Babbit recently recalled in an interview with Variety. “And then I heard the Joni Mitchell song on the radio and it had totally different lyrics. I was like,...

Just in time for the 20th anniversary of Jamie Babbit’s bubbly and sharp queer camp classic, But I’m a Cheerleader; Lionsgate has dropped a trailer for the 4K Directors Cut release out early next month. A subversion of the prudish after school special nature of sexual confusion polemics – the story follows the strait-laced Megan (Natasha Lyonne), a cheerleader who is sent to a gay conversion camp by her parents when they suspect she may be a lesbian.
It’s immediately clear that this conversion camp is not the usual subterranean institution that come to mind when one hears the term. It’s a deliciously gaudy place full of flamboyantly hypocritical counselors and other “troubled” youth who are just trying to come to terms with being themselves. That’s especially relevant for Megan, who finds herself developing feelings for another camper played by Clea DuVall (who’s made her...

Watching “Soapdish” as a child in the 90s was the first time I saw what life could be like for a transgender actress. Montana Moorehood, an actress on a soap opera played beautifully by Cathy Moriarty, is forcibly outed as a transgender woman to her co-stars. They react with shock and disgust, with her producer saying “She’s a boy” and the man who’s been intimate with her nearly pukes in his hand. Seeing that was not a positive experience for me.
I fell in love hard with Hollywood at a very young age. Watching TV and film was how I learned to speak English and discovered that I wanted to act, but life changed shortly after “Soapdish.” I was no longer allowed to be as feminine in my presentation. I was forced to cut my hair short and my parents bought boy-presenting clothes to protect me because they feared for my life.

Donald Cammell danced to his own tune; he only directed four films over twenty-six years before taking his own life, but each was unique and thrilling in their own peculiar way. Case in point: White of the Eye (1987), his meditation on toxic masculinity and dead ends told through the prism of an Americanized Giallo film; it’s a film that purposely piles on the unease until the images shatter the screen with style and sheen.
Released by Palisades Entertainment Group Stateside in May of ‘88, White actually premiered in its native U.K. the previous summer, as well as playing at Cannes that year. Prestigious? Sure, for those who followed Cammell’s unusual career trajectory through tumult and triumph. As for the general public, White was definitely a question mark - a horror film, a thriller, or an odd domestic drama? - and sank without a trace. But thirty-three years after its debut,...

Without live sports, one of the best alternatives around is to plop down and watch a sports film. Whether you’ve seen it before or are taking it in for the first time, there’s no shortage of options available on streaming platforms.
But let’s be honest: Plenty of sports movies are just plain terrible. You’re more likely to pick a lame one at random on Netflix than to score a winner.
Den of Geek is here to help, with a lineup of quality sports dramas and comedies — both based on fact and completely fantastic — available on Netflix (in the U.S.) that are bound to make your next streaming session a win.
Raging Bull (1980)
Arguably the greatest work of Martin Scorsese’s legendary directorial career, Raging Bull is as must-watch as it gets for film buffs and fans of sports movies alike. The biopic of former world middleweight boxing champion Jake Lamotta,...

Actors sometimes complain about being typecast, but it’s a fact of life for anyone in entertainment. John Ford is usually labeled a director of Westerns, despite “The Grapes of Wrath” and “Mister Roberts.” David Lean is known for his epics, but he also directed “Brief Encounter” and “Summertime.” Vincente Minnelli? The director of musicals, overlooking “The Bad and the Beautiful,” “Lust for Life” and “Some Came Running.”
Martin Scorsese in the past year has often been described as the director of gangster films, even though that genre represents only five of his 25 narrative films, or roughly 15% of his work, if you add in documentaries.
Scorsese is also typecast as one who makes male-oriented films. This ignores that his breakthrough “Mean Streets,” was bookended by two women-driven films: “Boxcar Bertha” (1972) and “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” (1974). The latter film won Ellen Burstyn the Oscar; Scorsese has also directed nine other...

Robert Harling and Andrew Bergman wrote the super-smart script for this meta-comedy about the soap opera drama behind a soap opera drama. Directed by Michael Hoffman, the cast features Sally Field as a fading afternoon star and Cathy Moriarty as her unscrupulous rival – their character’s names, “Celeste Talbert” and “Montana Moorehead” are just more evidence of the screenwriters’ precision edge satire.

Joe Dante takes an alternately nostalgic and clear-eyed look at boyhood life in Key West circa 1962 where the busy military base is a daily reminder of nuclear era nerves and the movie theater is the only escape. A bigger-than-life John Goodman plays a free-wheeling director who brings his latest fright film to town in order to gin up excitement while the jets overhead inspire a different kind of anxiety. Co-starring Dante perennials Robert Picardo and Dick Miller and with a touching performance from Cathy Moriarty as Goodman’s long-suffering partner in barnstorming and ballyhoo.

The film is written by Academy Award® winners Joel & Ethan Coen (No Country For Old Men), and Clooney & Academy Award® winner Grant Heslov (Argo).
Suburbicon opens on October 27, 2017.
Wamg invites you to enter for the chance to win Two (2) seats to the advance screening of Suburbicon on October 24 at 7:00 pm in the St. Louis area.

Movies to see on the long Labour Day weekendMovies to see on the long Labour Day weekendJenny Bullough9/1/2017 11:51:00 Am
It's finally here! The Labour Day weekend isn't really the end of summer, but it certainly feels that way. Maybe it's the residual instinct ingrained in us after years of elementary and high school, when summertime meant freedom from school for a full two months and September meant the end of all that and the return to teachers, books, and (ugh) homework.
No matter how you feel about the holiday, there's still lots of ways to squeeze the most fun possible out of your extra day off! And what better way to while away an afternoon than with a movie at a Cineplex theatre. Without further ado, here's our recommendations for what to see in theatres this long weekend!
If you crave action Atomic Blonde

Stars: Danielle Macdonald, Bridgett Everett, Siddharth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie, Cathy Moriarty | Written and Directed by Geremy Jasper
Written, directed and largely composed by Geremy Jasper, a New Jersey music video director making his first feature, Patti Cake$ is an exceptionally well made film, displaying the sort of rawness and authenticity only possible in street-level filmmaking. It’s a fresh take on some very familiar underdog story traits.
23-year-old Patricia (Danielle Macdonald), Aka Patti, lives a meagre existence of microwave meals, tinned lager and daytime TV. She lives with her mother, Barbara (Bridgett Everett) – a “friend” to many a local gentleman – and her sarcastic, chain-smoking Nana (Cathy Moriarty). Patti dreams of taking the star-studded crown from her hero, O-z (Sahr Ngaujah), and becoming “Killa P”, the sickest rapper on the East Coast. But her reality is merely sick: her family’s declining health is costing them dearly in insurance bills.

The director of the excellent Patti Cake$ takes us through making and casting the movie...
Around this time every year there’s a low-budget indie release you’ve probably been hearing about for months. Sometimes it’s got a couple of faces you know in it, but often it’s a complete enigma on a cinema slate filled with summer remakes and blockbusters.
Patti Cake$ - the tale of an aspiring rapper living in dead-end New Jersey - is this year’s Sundance hit, and we’ve been speaking to director Geremy Jasper about making the film, casting an unknown as his lead, and why he doesn’t want to direct a Star Wars movie.
Danielle Macdonald is a real find - what was the audition process like for Patti and how did the role ultimately land with her?
There wasn’t actually an audition. I got...
