Some of you may be asking yourselves, “What’s The Guyver?” But, I suspect if you were a kid in the nineties, you know Exactly who and what The Guyver is.
When I was growing up, my parents subscribed to the Canadian version of HBO, which was called The Movie Network. The mixture of programming on the channel was eclectic, to say the least, and the blockbusters were padded out with many direct-to-video tiles, usually in the erotic thriller or action genres. Folks like Shannon Tweed, Lorenzo Lamas, and others became pretty common to see pop up on the channel. Occasionally, one of these movies would feature a bigger star and sometimes turn out to be a real gem.
With that in mind, I remember vividly as a kid tuning in to watch The Guyver because it was promoted as a superhero movie starring Mark Hamill. While that’s maybe “partly” true,...

If you’re old enough to remember video rental shops, you may remember seeing them there on the shelves. They took up a remarkable amount of space, and yet it was often difficult to tell them apart. Their titles were mostly variants on the same few words – passion, lust, dangerous, deadly, seduction, instinct, obsession and so on, represented here as fridge magnets – and half of them starred Michael Douglas or Shannon Tweed. Sometimes people buying them would be a little shy and surreptitious about it. Certainly nobody pretended they were great art – and yet the erotic thriller genre continues to be dear to many filmmakers’ hearts. Whatever happened to it?
To explore its history, as Anthony Penta does here, is fraught with difficulties. Many films from the era are lost altogether; others survive only on decaying VHS tapes or the occasional laserdisc. In the latter days of the era...

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies, with each one reflecting a special event or day in May.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a tense battle between mothers, a tale of evil in the suburbs, a fast-food slasher, a twisty wartime horror story, and an indie slow burn with a Hitchcockian vibe.
You’ll Like My Mother (1972)
Directed by Lamont Johnson.
The movie stars Oscar winner Patty Duke as young widow Francesca, who’s visiting her late husband’s mother (Rosemary Murphy) for the first time at a remote house in snowy Minnesota. Soon things take a turn when Francesca becomes not only stranded at her in-law’s house, but also drugged and taken prisoner.

Jane Fonda gives a commanding performance in a film that avoids cliche and embraces a more nuanced view of sex work
There’s a version of Klute that sounds exactly like one of the generic sexy thrillers that popped up on video in the wake of Basic Instinct in the late 1990s. A high-priced call girl stalked by a killer. A private investigator drawn helplessly into her web. A whodunnit plot that ends with a violent climactic reveal. Shannon Tweed probably starred in that movie, and the “unrated” version would have flown off the shelves at suburban video stores.

Hookers! Devil worshippers! A naughty teenage voyeur! A deadly knife, a lethal sedan and a chainsaw-wielding psychopath! Nasal Spray! CineSavant breaks with the disc-reviewing norm and abandons journalistic integrity. Well, not really, but it is a heck of a lot of fun to finally review a film I edited 32 years ago, on a happy moviemaking money-losing vacation from Cannon Films’ advertising department.

Released in November by Warner Brothers, and produced in conjunction with some of that glorious Canadian tax shelter money (you’re welcome, eh), Of Unknown Origin only made back a quarter of its $4 million budget. It didn’t wow the critics either, although Peter Weller (Robocop) was singled out for his wry performance as the put upon vermin victim.

In preparation for the inauguration, here’s a handy list of everyone who won’t perform for the president-elect.

Count Kiss among the musical artists who won’t be playing Donald Trump’s inauguration. A TMZ cameraman caught up with rocker Gene Simmons and his wife Shannon Tweed last night, when the paparazzi asked the big question point blank: “Hey Gene, you’re the rock & roll Donald Trump — will you play the inauguration?” “No!” Tweed yelled in response for her hubby a number of times. She literally covered Simmons’ mouth so the “Celebrity Apprentice” alum couldn’t reply personally. Last week at Tiff Bell Lightbox, there was a camp reunion of sorts, where cast and crew from the Canadian comedy classic "Meatballs" came to share their memories to a receptive crowd. The charity screening was organized to support Action Against Hunger, a local group that is also celebrating its 35th birthday.
A number of people associated with the film, both behind and in front of the camera, came out to show their support. Dan Goldberg was one of the main writers and producers of the film, and it's clear that the film quite literally changed his life. "For me, no, nothing was the same [after 'Meatballs']," Dan shared. "It's the biggest change in my life, it's the thing I appreciate the most, and the most enjoyable hit I ever had. Going from zero to that was much bigger than going from that to anything else."

In "True Tori," Tori Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott allegedly tried to do something different -- a reality television show about their marriage that stripped away the celebrity veneer and explored the gritty aftermath of McDermott's adulterous affair while filming the first season of "Chopped Canada" in Toronto. I use the word "allegedly" because, depending on who you talk to or what you read, it's either exactly what it seems or it's as scripted as a very special episode of "The Big Bang Theory." The accusations are a varied lot, ranging from suggestions that the affair that started it all is fake (the woman McDermott is said to have slept with lacks "a digital footprint," according to the gossip rags), claims made by McDermott's teenaged son Jack that his father has been unfairly portrayed, and rumors that the show has just been a desperate money grab to deal with...

Ever since the advent of cable TV, the idea of leaving the comfort of one's own home for a crowded movie theater with the intention of getting turned on has gotten less and less appealing. Why go out when Shannon Tweed, Shannon Whirry, or some other strategically nude woman named Shannon can set the mood with an improbably-hunky cable guy / pizza delivery dude?

Christopher Meloni has had the kind of varied, almost schizophrenic, and very vivid acting career in which the first thing you see him in would likely color your perceptions of him for years to come. I first encountered him in the sixth season of “1st & Ten,” a raunchy ‘80s HBO comedy about a pro football team whose cast at various points included Delta Burke, Shannon Tweed, O.J. Simpson and, for a season — as an ex-con quarterback calling himself Johnny Gunn — a young Meloni. (Here’s the opening credits for that season.) As a result of that and a few other sitcom roles immediately after, I thought of him as a comedy guy and was thrown when he would pop up playing intense dramatic roles in the ‘90s on shows like “NYPD Blue,” “Homicide” and, for a long and memorable stretch, “Oz,” HBO’s first original dramatic series, in which Meloni...
