Auto Focus (2002)

Could have been better if true

Warning: Spoilers
First, yeah, the movie skips past exactly how a guy manages to seduce so many women so easily, and what the women wanted. Sure, Mick Jagger's all about sex. But was Bob Crane by 1978 so magnetic that he just had to snap his fingers? See his silhouette by a rerun with him and Sgt. Schulz and you want to sleep with him and be filmed by him? Which leads to second, which is go see http://www.bobcrane.com to get a more likely story, which is that Bob Crane wasn't a good boy turned bad - he'd always been consumed by sex, he showed everyone his blue films, including Disney, his wives knew about his behavior, he was a funny guy and his sex was an extension of both his humor and the growing openness in the 50's and 60's. I missed the intro, but the Web site gave me a better idea that Crane was a very good DJ and wasn't just a one-trick cowboy.

What could have been a very interesting and difficult film would have been one that would have discussed addictive behavior in terms of the addiction, not condemning or belittling the action. If you can deal with a marriage allowing other partners, how many is okay before it interferes with career and family? Most of us are used to balancing sex life with other activities, but what about when sex with strangers is the primary or only non-job activity? When you're open with your kids about it, how does it affect them? It doesn't seem to have hurt his son Scotty any. For some reason he doesn't seem sad about his father, he just seems sad the movie made Crane seem so pathetic when it's quite likely he was much more fun and entertaining and magnetic than this movie shows him to be or he wouldn't have achieved all his success and conquests.

Other than that, if treated as quite a bit fiction a fairly interesting stardom-to-death-and-destruction film.
